Bama’s NCAA troubles a concern for North Gwinnett’s James

JaWuan James’ phone has been ringing off the hook lately. But for now at least, he’s not answering.

Everybody wants to know why the 6-foot-6, 300-pound, four-star offensive lineman from Suwanee decided to reopen his recruitment after being committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide since May. And, of course, they want to know where he might be leaning now that he’s again on the free market.

“They’re probably in hunker-down mode because they’re trying to figure out what the heck they’re doing,” said North Gwinnett coach Bob Sphire, who is fielding a lot of the questions for James in the meantime.

Sphire was asked if anything happened that facilitated James’ change of heart. “No. I don’t there’s anything on Alabama. It’s all on JaWuan,” he said.  “It’s just him being confused as far as being sure what he really wants to do when it’s all said and done. I’m not real happy about it but I do want him to be happy about it at the end of the process.”

Sphire theorized that Alabama’s run-ins with the NCAA this summer over a textbook scandal fueled James’ doubts.

“He did feel like when this thing came up with the text books and that kind of stuff, that kind of threw him into a tailspin,” Sphire said. “I think he’s over-worried about the consequences if something else were to happen and that kind of got him thinking. But to be honest with you I’m not real sure.”

Sphire said such a change of  heart is what concerns him about his players making such early commitments.

“I try to counsel them when they want to make an early commitment like that to make sure they’re 100 percent sure that’s what they want to do,” Sphire said. “This is on him and his family. Like I say, I want him to be happy in the end but it’s really the last thing we need right now. Now we have the media and everybody calling us again.”

The Bulldogs, for whom James plays left tackle, have been getting along OK. They beat South Forsyth 42-7 Friday night to improve to 3-0 and maintain their No. 2 state ranking in Class AAAAA.

James supposedly is still considering Alabama. At the time of his commitment he said Georgia, Florida and Tennessee were among the other schools he seriously considered. His recruiting profile also lists Clemson, Oklahoma and Southern Cal. He had more than 30 offers initially.

Sphire said James did not visit anywhere this past weekend.

“I was actually down at the Georgia game [Saturday] and, of course, [offensive line] Coach [Stacy] Searels was asking me about him,” Sphire said. “But I haven’t heard from anybody else.”

James told Scout.com’s Chad Simmons, the only one to get through to him these last few days, that he is starting from a blank slate. “I am wide open,” he told Simmons. “I have no leader and I am starting all the way over again.”

#2 Bama Fan,
The textbook scandal is just what got us treading egg shells. I think that there is a lot of concern due to the fact that the NCAA is watching us due to the texbook thing. Couple that with this “fishing trip” and laptop issue with some nutjob named Curtis Anderson and I can see why one would be worried.

However, I don’t think anything will ever happen from the Anderson thing. It appears that he is a plant for Auburn to try and screw us up. Basically, if James doesn’t want to play for Alabama, then go someplace else and lose to us for four years in a row. Bye! We want you if you want to come but we can do without you! RTR!

#2bamafan….why is the text book issue such a surprise to you? Don’t you think any smart kid would at least be concerned? Maybe his parents asked him to take a step back from the whole thing. If you don’t think he will fit at Alabama for that reason, could sure use him at UGA. We will accept kids who have a mind of their own.

Jeff, you ‘Bammers amaze the Hell out of me! If one of your players/recruits urinated on the Bear’s grave, you would swear it was Auburn’s fault! Face it, we don’t care that much about you. James is just a mama’s boy that has a change of heart and wants to play near his home, which is closer to Athens, GA than it is to Auburn, AL. As for the Curtis Anderson incident, you have a 56 year old man that spends 3/4 of the year in Gulf Shores and swears to JC himself that he didn’t know Julio Jones played football, yea right! The reason everyone gets frustrated at the U of A is that with all the little quirks and inconsistancies that seem to have happened since the $4 million dollar fraud arrived on campus, is that it is ALWAYS someone elses doing. Just frickin admit it, not all the athletes that are recruited are stellar citizens. It is one thing to cover up your players mistakes, it is another to try and shift the blame to innocent parties.

Good grief, people, cut the guy some slack. Why is it a problem that JaWuan wants to step back and want to see how things start to clear up a bit before he makes this commitment that will lock him into a school for the next 4-5 years of his life? It sounds like he’s a rather intelligent young man if you ask me.

No one has mentioned it yet, so I’ll raise the subject; perhaps JaWuan is concerned about Alabama signing so many kids up front (more that the NCAA allows, knowing that they’ll never suit up for the University) that he just is uncomfortable about the NCAA starting to come down on that type of recruiting tactic and hurting Alabama as well.

Whatever the reason, JaWuan is a Senior in High School, and I, for one, wish him the very best this season. He has enough on his plate trying to make it through his games this fall, as well as classes the rest of the year; having to worry about where to play college ball, and how about a bunch or recruitniks feel about him, should be the least of his worries.

To all of us who have or have had kids the age of this guy…this isnt a surprise. Indecision, emotional or irrational decisions are just part of the teen growing up experience. It is not uncommon for any student to have a hard time deciding on a college (athlete or not). Better to have doubts now than after he has signed the letter of intent. This is why I am against the early signing period even though on the surface it seems like a good idea. Too many things can change in a year.

I also dont give a crap if his high school coach is inconvenienced by the kid’s indecision. “This is the last thing we need” he says. That is a selfish attitude for someone who is supposedly looking out for his players’ best interest. I wonder if he would feel that way if it were his son having difficulties making the decision.

I hope the kid takes his time and finds the perfect fit for him..wherever that is.

One of two things has happened. Either he is appalled by the typical Bammer recruiting schemes or he’s waiting for the money to get “right” before committing. Hopes it’s the former. Pretty obvious that now that Bammer is “back” that their boosters (notice I didn’t say alums) will be passing out the coin of the realm (casino chips) hot and heavy.

… now that the Auburn Tigers have rediscovered an offense, I guess the Western half can erase the check mark they already put beside that game on their schedule.

While I can understand why a story like this would get Tide rivals all giddy , it is seriously a non-issue . The Tide class is close to finished for the year with only 4 or 5 spots left max .

There are three kids at Jame’s position ranked HIGHER by the recruiting services who are all giving Bama a VERY serious look . If James feels like he can’t hack it at Bama I don’t see it being any big deal . Let him go where he thinks he can hack it and give his spot to a kid of equal or better talent that WANTS to compete .

His decision will most likely be made for him if he rings the phone to tell the Tide staff he thinks he will take his old spot back and finds out it no longer exist .

Reddawn,

Court and NCAA documents show that Albert Means (Player that Bama got busted for) was also offered $ by Michigan State. Who was the coach at Michigan State then? I’ll let you figure that one out. Some contend that MSU didnt offer the money until Saban left, but the timeline under that scenario doesnt really add up as Saban was there until November of 1999 and Means (class of 00′) certainly wouldve been recruited by MSU before November. Schools dont show up late in the process and offer cash – that is just asking to get nailed as the kid most likely has favorites already.

Even if everything happenned after he left that would mean Bobby Williams did the dirt. In case you were wondering Bobby Williams cut his teeth under Saban at MSU and is currently on his staff at Alabama.

LSU was accussed of academic fraud by two teachers and settled out of court. Guess who was the coach at the time? Saban was formally deposed in 2003 and would not comment per the advice of his legal team. LSU later acknowledged secondary violations and closed the case after the “settlement”. Legal documents indicate that Sbabn met with the head academic offender at least once a week during the time of the allegded offenses.

Most would admit that Saban is a control freak…..He micromanages everything he possibly can in his programs (see mentor Bill Belichek (sp) and his tenure with the Dolphins) do you really think he didnt know anything about EITHER of these?

Used in a sentence: I know you would like to put your sac in Nick Sabans mouth more than anything in this world.” Someone needs to get you “Grammar for Dummies” for christmas.

Look, there are 4 certainties in life, death, taxes, bama and tennerssee cheating. Bama and UcheaT do not have the talent base of a Georgia or Florida, with the state of tennerssee being down right pitiful. They will always do what it takes to get the great recruits on campus. That is why those two are always feuding about recruits; they’re bidding against one another. Please, don’t try to deny it! You guys wouldn’t stay on probation or sanctioned every decade, if it wasn’t the case.

He would have a greater opportunity to play early at Tennessee as they currently have four of five starters as Seniors. That is no lie. And, I imagine that is the story the Tennessee coaches are telling him.

Where do you start?!? First thing I’ll say is all fans are bias so that was an idiotic statement to make. I live in Mobile and I know Solomon Patton very well. Before Lance Thompson took the job at UT, he filled Solomons’ head full of lies about Alabama. So I know for a fact that he lies. For the people that think Alabama fans worship CNS, well you’re wrong. We’re just glad to have a good coach. I’m not fool enough to say their aren’t fans like that out there. I’m sure there are a few but I’m not one of them. Where are all the people that said he would be gone in 2-3 years? Speak up, I can’t hear you. Juwan, do what you need to do. You are a great player and the real Alabama fans would be happy to have you back if you so choose to re-commit. If not, good luck.

Hey “bank walker”; if you’re gonna talk trash, next time include YOUR affiliation (or continue to look like a coward). Florida’s run will be at an end with this year’s NFL draft and if you HANDED the crystal ball to UGA, they’d drop it. Thanks for helping UT ruin the SEC opening day win/loss record to a team that got beat by Houston, by the way.

I love reading the “stupid@ss jack” comments of bammers, especially the ones claiming the Curtis Anderson guy was an Auburn plant. Let’s think this out: If it was planned in advance to get uat in trouble, wouldn’t he be claiming to be the biggest bammer fan of all time the second this was uncovered? After all, why would he be taking players on trips personally if he didn’t want to be involved? This is a conspiracy, after all, the bammers say.

Further, why wasn’t this guy giving money to uat so that he could be categorized as a booster? If he was trying to get the tahd in trouble with this scheme, you’d think he would have planned it through the “discovery” phase. It’s funny how all this wraps up so well for the bammers. They get to point fingers and absolve their players of any wrongdoing.

This was all some elaborate scheme, and it was an elaborate scheme — a scheme concocted by bammer boosters. A scheme that takes advantage of an intermediary to funnel “clean” benefits to players and possibly recruits. That way if/when this person is caught, no association can be made back to bammer. So this Curtis Anderson guy … what of his relation to Billy Neighbors, eh? You almost fooled people with the “Julio knew this guy since he was a kid because his aunt cleaned his condo” bit, but now we have news of Jerrell Harris getting a laptop from the same shady character.

The fact that you believe this is all part of some nonsensical Auburn trick to get your team in trouble only proves why Alabama consistently ranks last in education year in and year out. Maybe you need to go back to making racial epithets while watching games and posting it on YouTube … you must be proud.

This is a huge decision and one that I am sure no one on this board has had to make. I hope he comes to Alabama but if he does not I wish him good luck. Roll Tide and be afraid the tide is rising and it is reaching epic proportions.

BAMA doesn’t need players that don’t want to be here and compete for a spot. If he wants to go to a school that will give him one and never push him to reach his potential that’s up to him. Unlike most schools that’s probably lying telling him they will start him saban told him he had to earn it. I hope he picks a school that’s best for him. As for all these haters your going to feel stupid if he signs with the TIDE. RTR

don’t you just love college football. i love the trash talking. its funny to read. Truth is, no one knows what is going through this guys mind. He may have rushed to commit, and he may have second thoughts. regardless, if he comes to the tide, i’ll cheer for him just like i do everyone else and if he plays elsewhere, i’ll boo the hell outta him. but lets keep the trash talking going. its what makes college football the greatest sport on earth. ROLL TIDE and to hell with everyone else….lol. and for the auburn person who said saban was a 4 million dollar a year fraud, all i have to say is 36-0! thats an ass whipping no matter how you look at it.

He can use whatever silly excuse he wants to, but this sounds like a Gerald West situation all over again to me. To say that he is starting from a blank slate makes me think that Alabama has been told by a higher ranked OL recruit they are coming to Tuscaloosa and Saban encouraged James to re-open his options. We only have 7 scholarships left, and this is the ugly part of recruiting right here whenever you are loaded with talent. I wish James success where ever he ends up, but I don’t think this will be the last situation like this we may have this year.

You gotta love Bama fans. They told us in 2004 that it didn’t matter that we won the SEC because we didn’t win it all. Now, they claim they own the SEC when they haven’t won anything at all. I’d say, As Urban goes for his third national championship in four years, he’d probably be a little amused at the idea that Saban is going to own the SEC.

Sam. your lucky that au didn’t have to loss all the wins in 04. Half the team would have been ineligible if they had to show up for class to get a A. One player player was admitted to take a class 2 weeks before the end of the semester and pased with a A after doing 1 book report so he could play in the bowl game. Lol yall better watch out fsu might point that out to the NCAA and you might have to vacate the wins.

I think some of those 9 guys that left a day before numbers had to be met probably had a talk with him. Yeah I know scholarships are for one year, but Saban has a way of removing players that don’t live up to expectations, its legal, but there isn’t a kid that signs who feels he isn’t going to make it on the field and thinks the scholarship will be renewed each year, making it good for 4-5 years. This practice can’t help with recruiting, I can promise you he isn’t sitting in recruits homes telling them, “Come to Bama, you got 2 years to be in the 2 deep or you are out”. My guess is its something alone the lines of “come to Bama where we care about you as a person and will see that you get a degree and an opportunity to compete for championships”. Of course Bama fans are all for this practice.

UofA Roll Tide….I feel dumber for reading your post. What is that? Where did YOU go to school? Did you matriculate at the Crapstone? Your grasp of the English language which includes both grammar and spelling is horrifying. I am embarrassed for you. Please understand, I’m not trying to ridicule bammers in general in this post……I am ridiculing you specifically. I do want to commend you for the way that your team fought back for a well earned comeback victory over “Florida Something or Another.” Perhaps JuWuan actually wants an education with his football scholarship and after reading garbage like this, decided to look elsewhere?

Ah, I see. It’s the old bamzo; “We didn’t lose him, we decided we didn’t want him” trick. Similar to the patented UAT “We didn’t lose, we got cheated” excuse. Pathetic.

Mikey, that is how Saban works. Like Ladarious Owens at the Barn. Alfy Hill was coming and he gave Owens a heads up. As for you Dawgs, I would be bitter too after that azz whooping you got last year.

Barners – no need to say anything to you, I really hope you little brothers get back on track. Start by selling out your stadium for a home game this year.

This kid will never make it at another school, because seems like he is carring some baggage like a new SUV in the picture from other school. The best coach in the nation right now is Nick Saban to put him on the right track. I hope we get him we have nothing to offer but a college education and a good time in football. Roll Tide Roll.

I’m a Bama fan through and through. The more I read comments left from so called fans, the more embarrassed I am as a Bama fan and fan of college football.

There is no need to degrade this high school student because he may change his mind. There is no need to insult each others programs. Be a good fan, cheer for your team. If your coach offers someone a scholly, and he chooses your favorite team, embrace him. If he goes somewhere else, then just let it go. But have some respect for the game and for other people. Roll Tide!

Who cares whether he changes his mind or not? Fact of the matter is that it opens up a spot for Saban to recruit another 4-5 star OT to replace him. Does anybody out there REALLY think that BAMA will now be so screwed over this that they’ll have to offer a scholarship to a guy that is considerin Middle Tennessee State, UAB, & Georgia Southern!?!?!? Let’s be real—BAMA replaces him with someone as good or most likely, BETTER, than James! This is not Mike Shula we’re talking about here, it’s Nick Saban. Plus from what I understand, James is a more athletic, quick, type finesse OT than he is a “smash mouth” type physical player….that means he might not have been that good a fit for BAMA anyway. I say let the kid do as he pleases & open up the door for a guy that WANTS to be at Alabama to come take his place. BAMA will be ok, I promise!

This is for BAMA Ride JaWuan James is a outstanding football player and does a great job in his classes. While you are askin who gives a crap about him answer this… Who are you to come on here and say that about him any way. I am one of North Gwinnetts football water girls and if you could see the way that JaWuan play’s out there. He doesn’t play for you nor for me. He play’s because he loves it and its his passion. So the next time you think its ok to crush someone’s dreams think about all the hours they put into that dream. Mon.-Thr. 2:30-6:00. I don’t see you goin to school from 7:10-2:10 and going on to the practice field til 6. My name is Shakara McClam and I love every last one of those players and I give them total respect for playing with their hearts and soul!!!!!! Much respect for JaWuan!!!!!!!!1
