Georgia Tech and Georgia both have huge football games this week but one of the state’s top recruiting prospects will be attending neither of them.
Tucker linebacker James Vaughters, a Class of 2011 prospect who earns a 5-star rating in Rivals.com’s early rankings, is actually going to be in Columbus, Ohio, for the Southern Cal-Ohio State game. But don’t worry Dogs and Jackets fans, he plans to get around to you guys, too.
“He’s not going tonight [to the Georgia Tech-Clemson game] because it’s Thursday and he has school obligations,” said Jonathan Vaughters, James father. As for USC-Ohio State, Mr. Vaughters said, “Well, obviously it’s a big game and he’s interested in both schools. We plan on going out to USC, too.”
The Vaughters will be accompanied by Tucker teammate Chris Sanders, a junior who plays quarterback and defensive back for the Tigers.
Mr. Vaughters was speaking on behalf of his son Thursday afternoon because at that moment James was having his injured wrist checked out by a doctor. Mr. Vaughthers anticipated that his son, who has not been able to play this season, was going to be cleared to play for Friday night’s game against Lithonia. That’s at least a week ahead of schedule.
“He’s chomping at the bit to play,” Mr. Vaughters said.
As of Thursday, James’ plans are to visit Florida next weekend, then Tech-North Carolina on Sept. 26 and Georgia-Tennessee on Oct. 10. He also plans to go to North Carolina at some point and, as mentioned before, Southern Cal.
Asked if that was an accurate portrayal of his son’s favored suitors — the 6-2, 215-pound linebacker was offered by virtually everybody — Mr. Vaughters said, “I’d say that’s a good subset. Not to say that others have been eliminated.”
Wherever Vaughters ends up visiting, his father said his plan is to make a decision before next season. Tech and Georgia, he said, are serious contenders.
On Tech: “They’ve got a great program academically and football wise. It’s close to home. Sometimes that’s good, sometimes it’s not.”
On Georgia: “He’s been up there at least three different times and likes it a lot. He knows them well.”

No your home is with a winning program at Tech. UGA is on a downward out of control spiral. Stay home close to your family and friends and go to GT. You win at Tucker. You will win there too.

James,
Please realize Tom is living in a fantasy world where his “vaunted” GT team actually has played in their conference championship in the last 20 years. If you want a good degree go to GT. If you want to be a NFL player come to Georgia. Look at the numbers. At Georgia, we consistently win and are on national TV. At Tech, they can’t even win a weak conference. Tech’s defense is horrible too. CPJ has never had a good defense. It’s not what he does. Even with all the talent Tech had on “d” last year, they still sucked. Tom needs his meds to think clearly.

denise: Sorry about that. It’s fixed now. Had a little flashback I guess. When I grew up in Stone Mountain and played youth football in DeKalb County, I played for the Central DeKalb Cardinals. Anyway, we used to play the Tucker Lions. Now it’s the Central DeKalb Jaguars as I understand it. anyway, my bad!

Tech got lucky thursday but give them credit for coming back after a dismal passing game by Nesbitt. He finally got a decent pass off at the end and they pulled one out of their rear end. After being ahead 24 to 0 Tech did nothing in the second half. Vaughters isn’t going to a program that will never make it to the BCS. If Tech barely squeaked past a 37th ranked Clemson how are they going to do against the good teams on their schedule? I see at least 4 losses ahead and the Tech-Fil-A Bowl AGAIN for the INSECTS.

If he’s really want’s to play for a winner. A team that play’s for real championships, a team that is on tv every week, a school that sent’s players to the NFL.Then he needs to look at the University of Florida. Again if he want’s to get those big fat championships rings go to the UF!!!

Gator Steve, looks like he’s gonna be here for Tennessee so we’ll have to look for him in the recruits section Sept 19. I’m just worried about picking up some WRs and DLs for 2010…That and another DB (Cody Riggs) and a LB (Jeff Luc) and we will be set…

I would say if you want to be an NFL player, if your good enough it doesn’t matter where you go. But using your line of reasoning he should then go to tOSU or USC if he really wants to play in the NFL and get a chance to play for a National Championship.

Mr. Vaughters is from Dayton and is a lifelong OSU fan. His mother is also from Ohio. Could be an interesting weekend for James.
