Former Georgia signee Toby Jackson stars for Navarro JC

It’s Wednesday and here that means it’s time to clean out the notebook and take a look around the Web and see what’s happening regarding the local recruiting scene.

So here we go. . . .

We reported last week that 2008 Georgia signee Toby Jackson was going to be playing ball in the state for the first time since graduating from Griffin High when his Navarro College team visited Georgia Military in Milledgeville this past Saturday. Jackson’s presence was was indeed felt as the 2007 AJC Super 11 defensive end recorded two sacks in No. 7 Navarro’s resounding 35-7 victory over No. 8 GMC. Jackson was flagged for unnecessary roughness after the second sack, according to a report on the Navarro College website.

There’s coverage on the game itself from the Union Recorder newspaper, which reports that Georgia commitment Jakar Hamilton suffered a minor leg injury in the game. Must have been from over use as the visitors rolled up 503 total yards, including 392 passing. . . .

Grayson defensive tackle Shawn Green and Flowery Branch quarterback Connor Shaw were named Lineman of the Week and Back of the Week, respectively, by the Atlanta Touchdown Club in its first weekly honors of the season. Green, a Georgia Tech commitment, played an integral role in the Rams’ 10-0 victory over Central Georgia powerhouse Warner Robins this past Friday. Shaw, a South Carolina pledge, was deadly accurate in a 35-7 win over Lumpkin County. He completed 15-of-16 passes for 223 yards and four touchdowns. . . .

Because of the Labor Day holiday, I didn’t get a chance to bring you the weekly prospect update feature. So here’s a quick rundown of some of the more notable performances from this past weekend:

  • Super 11 wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers, Georgia commitment, caught five passes for 60 yards, including a 50-yard TD reception, and also blocked a punt for Calhoun High.
  • Florida commitment Mack Brown of M.L. King had 138 yards rushing and 2 TDs in two quarters of work against North Cobb.
  • Houston County’s Robert Williams toted the ball 36 times for 254 yards and scored 3 TDs in a 28-20 win over Fayette County.
  • Deon Brock of Commerce had 188 yards and 4 TDs in a 34-14 win over Morgan County.
  • Alabama commitment Blake Sims continued his good work with 187 yards passing and 3 TDs in an easy victory over Frankling County.
  • Touchdown-scoring-machine Rajaan Bennett, who got the season under way with a four-TD performance in the Corky Kell Classic, chocked up two more scores in a win over Etowah. More notable in that contest was the special teams performance of Demarius Matthews. He had a 79-yard TD on a punt return and another 79-yard TD on a fake punt.
  • Kyle Vorster scored two more TDs and had 115 yards rushing for Walton.
  • Roswell wide receivers Chris Boyd and Keegan Hughes combined for 10 catches for 207 yards and scored two touchdown passes each region win over Centennial. . . .

Hundreds of high school players sign scholarships out of Florida every year and few newspapers do a better job of covering college football recruiting than the Orlando Sentinel. There are two items in there this week regarding prospects considering Georgia teams. First of all, Dr. Phillips High wide receiver Kenny Shaw, who is considering Georgia along with Florida, Florida State, Alabama and Tennessee, is likely going to take a trip to Columbus, Ohio, this weekend for the Ohio State-Southern Cal game. Rivals.com ranks Shaw as the No. 24 wideout in the country. Also, a somewhat under-the-radar prospect named E.J. Dunston, a 6-2, 308-pound defensive tackle from Orlando-Edgewater, has Georgia and Georgia Tech atop his list and says he favors attending college out of state.

Four-star prospects Khairi Fortt and Johnavon Fulton will be among the dozens of prospects visiting Athens this weekend for the Georgia-South Carolina game, according to georgia.scout.com. Fortt is a 6-2, 221-pound linebacker from Stamford, Conn. Fulton is a 6-0, 175-pound cornerback from Manning, S.C. . . .

The AJC’s Michael Carvell tells me that Warner Robins DT Jeffrey Whitaker appeared to be the most dominant lineman in the game when he covered the Grayson game this past weekend. Rivals.com’s Jamie Newberg reports that the 6-3, 294-pounder is considering Georgia, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Auburn North Carolina, Tennessee and Cal.

Jaded Jacket: No, Georgia’s non-qualifiers tend to go to military institutions — Hargrave Prep in Virginia or Georgia Military in Milledgeville. Some observers feel like Jackson’s decision to attend Navarro, which is way out in Texas, is a sign he intends to go elsewhere. Alabama was Georgia’s chief competition when coming out of high school. . . . Pretty informative answer for a smartaleck question, wasn’t it?

Why would a kid that failed in high school be of big concern? What about the hundreds of young men that made the grade and are productive players at all levels. (Division 1, 1-AA, II and III) These kids should be given the ink first.
