TE Orson Charles looks like major contributor for Bulldogs

Georgia took a total of 12 true freshmen to Stillwater but only half actually got into the game and none really had anything in the way of a major impact.

Branden Smith was the No. 2-ranked cornerback in the country when he signed with the Bulldogs out of Booker T. Washington High last February and certainly made the biggest splash with his first plays coming on the offensive side of the ball. It had been hinted since National Signing Day that he could possibly play on offense and in the kicking game. In the end, however, you’d have to say his “impact” was minimal has he accounted for 42 total yards six touches (three rushes, 2 kickoff returns and one reception) and his contributions on defense were minimal. Clearly, though, the Bulldogs are expecting big things out of this speedy DB from Atlanta.

Probably the most significant impact from the standpoint of participation came from tight end Orson Charles. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound prep All-American out of Tampa’s Plant High played a significant portion of the game. He finished with a modest 46 yards on two catches but most notably was the target on one of the Bulldogs’ most critical passes late in the game. Also notably, Charles was unable to handle the Joe Cox’s hard throw on a quick slant on that play. The pass was just a touch high and behind Charles but otherwise should have been handled. But Charles’ unusual speed and good hands were well-illustrated with 25- and 21-yard catches.

Also getting PT on Saturday were TE Arthur Lynch (6-5, 255, Dartmouth, Mass.), LB Michael Gilliard (6-2, 200, Valdosta), DE Montez Robinson (6-5, 245, Avon, Ind) and DT Abry Jones (6-3. 273, Warner Robins. Only Jones, with one tackle, managed to show up in the box score.

As notable as the true freshmen that did play were those that did not. Marlon Brown, the much-ballyhooed wide receiver out of Memphis, did not take an offensive snap. Neither did fellow wideout Rontavious Wooten, who drew so much praise in preseason camp. Neither did AJC Super 11 tailback Washaun Ealey.

Coach Mark Richt indicated Tuesday that Brown and Wooten will likely play this week.

“The game (last Saturday) was tight,” Richt said.. “You have a young guy in there that you don’t feel like understands it as well as a veteran guy. You kind of look at your veterans and see if they have enough juice in them to keep going.  We decided not to play those guys, but we cannot go the season with just four receivers. There’ss no way, so we have to play those guys. I told the freshman that you have to make sure in practice that you are sharp. The sharper you are in practice, that breeds confidence in your coach to give you opportunities. We know we need to play them, but they also need to continue to get to the point where they are studying and practicing to where it gives them confidence and the staff confidence.”

Meanwhile, there were some fairly significant impacts made by freshmen around the SEC. Some of the more noteworthy ones:

  • Auburn RB Ontario McCalebb was named SEC Freshman of the Week Tuesday after rushing for 148 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown in the Tigers win over Louisiana Tech;
  • Bryce Brown, rated the No. 1 back in America coming out of high school, had 104 yards on 11 carries (9 ypc) and TD.
  • Vanderbilt’s Zac Stacy was 20 for 133 yards rushing with a touchdown for Vanderbilt.

Do you like what you saw of Georgia’s freshmen or do you want to see more?

In addition to Bryce Brown running for over 100 yards, David Oku scored 2 TD’s and Marsalis Teague outperformed any of the players mentioned in the article about Reid and Smith! Just exactly where was Marlon (Grandma’s baby boy) Brown this past Saturday???

I definetly like what I saw. Even though we lost the game, There were some good play . I liked the way our defense played. Much improved from last year . I agree that O. Charles will be a beast in time. R. Samuel’s play was better than I thought. Basically I am not in a panic because I think we will get things started this weekend.

I wasn’t sold on Bryce Brown at first. I mean, how much high school talent really comes out of Kansas after all? But he may be the real deal. Need more than one game to determine that definitively of course.

Yes – I do think we should have seen the Freshmen play. Our wait three years before you see the field policy has not served us well. Look at the time we lost with Knowshon. Smith, Ealey, and Wooten ,and Murray should be given a chance to contribute. Heck, our best players didn’t even see the field last Saturday. Really, could we do any worse letting these guys get some reps? I don’t think so. Plus, these guys will benefit from the playing time going in to next season…look at the depth on our O-line this year.

Geez, all these Gayle Sayers fans need to calm down. I never said that no talent ever came out of Kansas. I was suggesting that Kansas is generally not known for producing top HS talent. As such, players may be overhyped coming out of that system after producing large statistics against lower level competition.

Our school systems really need to start offering classes in logic and critical analysis.

I liked what I saw from Branden Smith. This guy plays all out. His fellow players should take notice. I say throw all the freshman in and allow them to play. We will not win 8 games unless Richt allows these guys to play. Cox should be holding the clipboard; Murray should be playing. How many teams allow their # 2 QB to play on special teams? Exactly none. That is because Murray is really the # 2 guy. Richt is only being nice to his older players. Stop it CMR; stop trying to make everyone happy and start focusing on winning games.

Well obviously the freshman players could not be any worse than the veterans on offense. But it’s the same story the last few years with CMR and his staff, unwilling to change a game plan thats not working or accept responsibilty for the lack of production from either side of the ball. I will give the defense props for playing well though given the short field they had most of the game.

Regarding Trinton S, the again downed O linemen for UGA. Let us hope that he recovers well and has a decent career, one year or so.. He will get a first class education though. He can study and become a MD or exec or coach or whatever. That will sustain him through out his life, not football.

As for the rest of the dawgs ………….we are in big trouble in 2009.

What ever happened to lineman AJ Harmon? He was supposedly all world. Hell, put him in for TS or that o line kid from Lagrange…. Burdette. Let them play now. They would have to be better than the crap that we witnessed on Saturday.

Mike Bobo admitted that not playing Marlon Brown was a mistake.

How many mistakes are these coaches going to make, then admit to later before something is done about it?

Everyone was wondering where the heck Brown was at. Marlon Brown, the receiver with great hands that could possibly have a similar impact as A.J. Green did his freshman year. How is it that 99% of bulldog nation knows that he should have been playing but Bobo and Richt didn’t play him.

Are they going to make the same mistake like they did with Knowshon. We completely wasted a year when he really could of helped the team as a freshman.

Another year and the same ole mistakes. I hope this isn’t another mistake with Joe Cox as Richt made with Joe T. I mean seriously the first time I ever saw Joe T. throw a ball I could see that he had no business playing QB on any level. Is Richt making a similar mistake with Cox? All I know is I could of made some of the throws Cox couldn’t, and I never played football but I have thrown one. What Cox was doing reminded a little too much of Joe T.

Richt NEEDS to use his talent, and stop giving playing time to players that have put their time in for 3 or 4 years. If you suck, sit on the bench. I you’re the best at your position, then you should be playing. Why does that seem to be lost with this coaching staff???

Looks like since Van Gorder left, UGA continues to get worse. Richt really is losing his edge — I’m a UGA alumni (Class of 1985) but it seems like Paul Johnson is doing a much better coaching job of his players than UGA. The defense played well Saturday but not great — how many sacks did we get? And it seemed like OSU’s QB had time to throw the ball. I’m really disappointed in Bobo’s playcalling — he is not consistent at all.

This has got to be the year were our coordinators on both sides of the ball show there coaching abilities. The way I rate or comment on them is this way.. Part of my judgement is the way our team plays on the field, but another way is.. If either Bobo or Martinez lost there job at UGA, would any other SEC team hire them?? I sadly have to say that I do not think anyone would. And on Caleb King playing Saturday. I dont believe he will be the Every game starter and big play maker we thought he would be. I played football for 12 years in Warner Robins and I have played with people that have played like he has. When he had his major injury the last year of high school, he has never been the same. The guys that I played with were always afraid of getting hurt again and never played the same. I think Caleb is doing the same. These are just my honest thoughts. Joe Cox – Short, Slow, Noodle Arm. Bo Bo – erratic play calling.

I wholly believe the 1st drive of the game and of the 2nd half were scripted, as they showed heavy Richt influences. After that, it was all Bo Bo – what an embarrasement.

Your playmakers can’t make plays if they are not on the field and the offense (apparently) has to run what is called by the OC. Boat loads of talent, but truly inept coaching will continue to Dawg this team until a new OC is found.

First of all, let me apologize for UT fans everywhere for the embarassment that “Dogs Drool” causes on this vent. Obviously, he is still trying to overcome for his lack of affection as a child.

I do wonder if Marlon Brown noticed the significant playing time that the freshman at UT received this weekend. The one thing I have liked about CLK so far is that he has kept his word about all positions being open for competition. That gets the attention of upperclassmen who now need to work harder to keep their playing time AND it gets the attention of recruits when he tells them they will get a chance to play…because he has a track record.

I heard an interesting take on a UT message board…could CMR be evolving into the SEC’s next Phil Fulmer? Everybody loves him, he gets a little comfortable, loyal to his assistants, and then slowly slips back into the pack. I’m not saying I agree…just food for thought.

There is no excuse for not playing Marlon Brown and Rantavious Wooten. Did the receivers on the field show so much ability that the freshmen couldn’t play? Let me clear some special teams questions up for you experts. Number 1: Branden Smith was told by Fabras and Richt to take the ball out of the endzone no matter what because he wanted to create a spark and let his freshman gain some confidence. Number 2: Blair Walsh on kickoffs could boot the ball out of the endzone everytime if he wanted to, but once again Fab won’t let him. Coach Fabras is very set in his ways, and he has been running his kickoff coverage schemes for years. The idea is to kick the ball to the far side of the field around the 5 or 10 yard line, and then force the returner up the sideline. So before anybody is quick to make judgements on a players actions, remember that there is always someone behind these players telling them what to do.

laxdawg, I do not blame the kicker or even the return team. I blame the coach. We tried the scheme for most of last season and lost the field position battle. We play it again this year and get burned again. All just after the head coach said we are going to kick it in the end zone and put a juco on scholly to do it. As a fan I expect to improve in problem ares. Yes other area may drop off kids come in and out but this is a continued problem.

UT had no choice but to play the freshman, from what I hear Kiffy made alot of promises to get them there including some one on one time with that wife of his…

UCLA will not be as easy to roll over, Hardesty will see more action this weekend because of that reason. Having more than one option to handoff to also makes the burden easier on the other players allowing them to relax and just play. Georgia was not “afforded” this opportunity since King was out and Thomas was obviously not ready to take reps.

And no Dawgs Drool (such a clever name by the way, did it take a whole afternoon to come up with that or did you steal it from another member of the local MENSA chapter there in Knoxville) you aren’t an embarassment to UT fans, more than likely its just your family whose embarassed.
