Perkins’ 300-yard rushing night pushes him into the limelight

For a Division I recruit, Charles Perkins had managed to remain relatively below-the-radar even after his commitment to Georgia Tech last February.

That won’t be the case much longer.

After his 300-plus-yard rushing effort in Collins Hill’s season-opening win over Parkview this past Friday, you can bet a lot of major colleges are wishing they’d made more of a play for the 6-foot-1, 205-pound running back.

“Tipping the scale over 300 yards, that doesn’t come around too often, especially against a perennial power like Parkview,” Collins Hill coach Billy Wells said Monday. “Charles was on a lot of people’s lists as far as being one of the top guys but when he committed to Tech so early it kind of cooled the jets on the interest level in him. But he’s certainly one of the best that I’ve seen or been around.”

After videotape review, Perkins’ official numbers for the game were 302 yards on 33 carries, or 73 percent of the Eagles’ offense on the night. The amazing part is that did not include any break-away runs. The majority of his real estate was earned between the tackles in ball-control, chain-moving situations. Also, Collins Hill had two touchdowns called back due to holding penalties and had a field goal blocked.

“they were loading up the box,” said Perkins, whose longest run from scrimmage was 24 yards. “I watched the film on Sunday and sometimes they had nine or 10 [defenders] in the box. So you could see it was going to be a grind. The offensive line did a great job of giving some room to run.”

Said Well: “It was a workhorse kind of night. In the fourth quarter, when it mattered the most, we took the ball from our 4-yard line and drove it down the field in clock-killing mode. That was part of the deal, too.”

The “home-run” jaunts will come soon enough, Perkins said. He had two 200-plus games last season when he rushed for 1,244 yards and 12 TDs as a junior.

“Charles is a powerful back but he’s fast, too,” Well said. “And he holds our school clean record at 315 pounds. Just a good, all-around player.”

Perkins took classes in summer school this year so he could get ahead and graduate in December. He’ll enroll at The Institute in January.

Interestingly, Perkins’ only other offers were Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Wake Forest, UCF and Wisconsin. Georgia recruited him but not vigorously. He remains a 3-star-ranked prospect by both Rivals.com and Scout.com. That remains a source of motivation.

“I’m always looking to make a statement,” Perkins said. “I look at the backs that are ranked ahead of me and I feel like I can compete against any of them. That keeps me motivated.”

Perkins’ goals are to rush for at least 2,000 yards and to lead Collins Hill to the state championship. Oh, and he’d like to see a couple of more stars added at the end of his name on those recruiting boards.

“I’d love that but not for me,” he said. “It’d make Georgia Tech’s recruiting class look better.”

Chip, thanks for the story. Anyway to periodically keep tabs on GT’s other commits during the season, especially since they are all from GA?

Looks like Tech is getting its pick of the litter at RB again (ala Dwyer), while everyone else gets the leftovers. Enjoy the leftovers, Dawgy fans.

The thing I like about him is what he said in the end…I want to be better not for himself but to make the team look better…that my friends is what seperates many good players from great players!

9.2 ypc for 33 carries with the longest run being 24 yards! Wow.

…part of the reason more offers did not come in is that he committed to GaTech back in January…before the Class of 2009 had even inked. He knew what he want…and he took it. Good for him…he will be an excellent feature back for GT.

He is up to 215 lbs now and keeps getting bigger. He is actually bigger than Dwyer when JD entered his senior year.

Hey Bounty Hunter, I’ll take a 4 or 5 star running back over a 3 star RB who just runs for lots of yards any day. The guy didn’t score any TD’s. TD’s are what counts!

leftovers? bounty hunter, get out of your fantasy world. Clearly you didn’t even read the article. When it says UGA didn’t recruit him vigorously, that means they didn’t want him. Get over yourself and your one win in 8 years. It is Ga Tech that gets UGA’s leftovers not the other way around, techie. I think every college recruiting site in the world will tell you that story. On another note, this guy is obviously a high school stud (taking into account SEC’s comments) and looks good for tech. However, you don’t have to look too far up 316 to find another high school stud who has done nothing in college (Caleb King). So techies/nerds I wouldn’t read too much into this just yet.

Stars is not all that count. You only get them by going to the right combines. And you need to start going 1st year of high school. You will find there are many of guys with stars that don’t have any offers and tons of boy with lots of offers with on stars. Are you saying the people running the combines know more than a college coach that’s recruiting to feed his family. Dont believe the hype from the stars. Watch some films, game after game . Not one hit wonders.

Some star guys are really that but most just are not. They will get in college and We will forget their names.

Yeah I saw when moreno tried to pull that hurdle move and take off at the goal line in the second half. I believe he got met by a linebacker and knocked on his ass. Didn’t want to bring it up but well u know. Are u really gonna talk smack about running games? Come on everyone is calling tech,s backfield the best in the nation except maybe that second homer p steele. Yes u dogs field a good offense usually but I think CPJ has this running back thing wrapped up. We have at least 3 backs this year that would start at most schools abd 2 of them at least would start at the second powe houses. Good luck to everyone,s team abd their season until we meet them. I want to meet 4 SEC schools this season… We’ll see… Go Jackets!!

The most amazing aspect of Perkins’ performance was the game score. How often do you find a 300 yard rusher, at any level, in a 10-7 ball game? The Flats are impatiently waiting…

Yes, I was at the game if the OC had made better play calls, and the refs would have called a better game this would have been a 31 to 7 blowout!!!! Perkins never had a negative play in the game, most plays were physical up the middle/off tackle runs in the teeth of the defense. You don’t see many backs that relish the physical contact like this kid. I personally feel a 400 yard rushing game is in his future.

Saw St. Thomas Aquinas High School on ESPN360 last night. They look like Tech, run a similar offense and are awesome. In the first quarter they laid 28 points on Upper Arlington, OH in the Horseshoe at Ohio State while holding UA to -1 rushing yards. Take a look at them if you get a chance. Would love to see us get a few of these guys who already know a lot of the system.

“no offense jackets fans, but I do believe mack brown is the #1 back in ga”

That’s the point. #1 back in ga says who? Scout, Rivals, ESPN? None of those sites have even looked at perkins, who is big and fast. I’ll take 300 yards against parkview over 5 stars any time. Plus, isn’t Mack 4 star (not that it matters)?

Damn, you Georgia fans are right, Gator fans really are that dumb. Now I all of a sudden have a new found respect for bulldogs. Crazy.

Perkins looks to be the best RB in the state by the end of this season.
The only question I have is whether or not Dwyer will have a strong enough season to become the 2nd best back to play college football in the state of Georgia.

Right now, I have:
1) Herschel Walker
2) Garrison Hearst

Can Jonthan Dwyer replace Garrison Hearst as #2? We’ll see. Moreno is a great RB but he’s no Dwyer, Hearst, or Walker (obviously).

Both teams are loading up on in-state talent. There is enough to go around. Perkins, Ayers, Bostic, Thomas, etc. are going to be great but most likely so are Stripling, Ogletree, Rodgers, and Malcome for UGA.

Mack Brown would have ran all over Parkview. SWD defense is way better than Parkview. Tell me, When was the last time PARKVIEW won more than 8 games.Yes 300 yards is a lot of yards, but the score was 10-7. Where are the touchdowns , did the kicker miss alot of field goals. The kid Perkins is good, but don’t compare him to J.D.
