Stephenson’s roster crowded with D-1 prospects

I’m heading over to Stone Mountain today to check out the bus load of college prospects that dot the roster at Stephenson High School.

According to assistant coach Corey Johnson, at least 16 Stephenson seniors are currently being recruited. At least 13 of those have garnered interest from what would be considered major Division I (or FBS) schools (SEC, ACC, Big East, Conference USA, etc.). And that doesn’t include some juniors and sophomores that are also getting looks.

Three of the Jaguars’ players have already committed to programs: LB Tyrone Cornileus (Miami), RB Raymond Sanders (Kentucky) and DB Kenneth Ladler (Vanderbilt). Another one, CB Chris Sharpe, appears on the verge of pledging to Louisville, though that’s just speculation at this point.

Of course, the one uncommitted Stephenson player everybody is interested in is defensive tackle Michael Thornton. The 6-foot-2, 280-pounder is being pursued by Georgia, Georgia Tech, Auburn and Alabama, among many others.

I’ll let you know what I found out tomorrow after I’ve had a chance to visit with coach Ron Gartrell and all these guys. Let me know if there’s something specific you’d like me to ask.

Now for a few  links. . . .

Traivon Bailey, a highly-touted linebacker from McArthur High in Hollywood, Fla., and an Auburn recruit, quit his team this past week, according to the Miami Herald. No definitive explanation has been given yet.

A Georgia quarterback recruit is son of Florida State’s offensive line coach, which has made for some interesting recruiting scenarios, according to The Tallahassee Democrat. . .

Big 12 connections pay off for Auburn with the surprise emergence of a freshman defensive end,  the Mobile Press-Register reports. . . .

A lot of you guys might have seen this last week while I was on vacation but it’s worth repeating even if you did. The State columnist Ron Morris tells us about a Lexington, S.C., kid who plays trumpet in his high school band who has been mistakenly receiving recruiting letters from major football programs, including South Carolina.

Tell the kid in the band to accept any scholarship offered. He gets a year at least if he signs.

Tell Coach Gartrell that his old Shamrock High ball players are still keeping up with and pulling for him and the Jaguars!

Stephenson High School are what you call perennial losers! Every year, they have enough athletes to fill out a college Div.II roster, but never win on the high school level!!!!!!!!!! Must be the coaches.

Could you ask Coach Gartrell when he get into the playoff this year to change his offensive sceme to match up against playoffs oponents. His offensive scheme is good enough among the region but when he gets into the state playoff, he needs to move it up a notch. I am a big Stephenson fan and would like to see them win a state championship this year ad a sleeper, since no one is picking them to win it all. They have had too many good season without going to the big party & winning the big dance

stephenson has all those d-1 players but they could only earn 3 points in the scrimage game on friday when tucker wasnt even fully staff with there starters and for them to say during warm ups that they were going to beat tucker ass u didnt impress me at all and im a stephenson fan got a lot of work to do if thats how we are going to play ball this year 6 points on jv 6 points when the ball was tapped to a stephenson player and a field goal maybe we would have had more points on offense if we can learn not to hold

Bigdog what game did you watch stephenson dominated that game from start to finish. Those phantom penalties that negated 21 pts come on everyone at that stadium knew that game was called lopsided. Tucker only moved the ball on the 2nd team on a screen play and then the dogs were sent back in and that drive ended. or maybe it was when there was a high punt and tucker got it on the 3 yard line and ended on the 12. so what game were you watching. Take your butt to gwinnett where they pimp your kids and win games and never try to get them in college. reference to the article about mark crews(brookwood). I know what it was were you a stephenson or a shamrock reject and you blamed it on gartrell. GET THERAPY AND GET OVER IT!!!!!!!

To Gartrell Hater, Shamrock?, and Big Little Dog don’t hate on STEPHENSON and Coach Gartrell. You can’t blame everything on coaching. Hey Big Little Dog you must need a seeing eye dog, because you wasn’t at the same game We were at Friday. What do you mean Tucker didn’t have all their starters in the game and neither did Stephenson. Plus, Stephenson had 2 to 3 touchdown called back.

Stephenson has never impressed me. Camden played them in 2003 on the way to our 1st state championship. They had something like 13 D1 recruits back then and besides getting completely whipped all they did was spit at our players when they got into their stances, lay out late hits, and commit all kinds of personal fouls. Don’t know if it is the same coach but back then they were poorly coached tacticaly, and poorly coached as human beings.

mcnairs head coach and the entire staff were let go today . the reason for this was insubordination which is some bullsh#t. they replaced a great man with a spineless coward of a coach named john april who in two yeard as head basketball coach won a …total of 4 games. also ever since he came to mcnair he had it in for coach mo and wanted his job.
