UGA commit Butler plans to ‘look around’ this fall

Georgia rather notably has seven Florida players currently committed to sign in its 2010 recruiting class. A great place to keep up with these prospects — and others from the Sunshine State — is the Orlando Sentinel’s new recruiting page.

Included in today’s issue is a nice piece on Georgia commitment B.J. Butler of Osceola. The Sentinel reports that the 6-foot-3, 230-pound, 4-star linebacker plans to “look around” with some official visits to some other schools this fall. He said he hopes to make trips to Auburn, Colorado State and perhaps Southern Cal. But Georgia fans need not fret, Butler insists. He still plans on becoming a Bulldog.

“Georgia is a beautiful situation,” Butler told the Sentinel. “The coaching staff, the fan base, facilities, academics, everything was beautiful. Academics are important for me and their engineering program is attractive to me. And the coaches are like my high school coaching staff. I really like those guys.”

Now on to some links:

That’s all for now. Feel free to link any good recruiting stories you run across.

Why is Jeff Luc pictured in an article about BJ Butler? I’d love to have them both in Athens next fall…

your picture is incorrect, (it’s not BJ Butler)…that is Jeff Luc, a linebacker recruit that UGA would love to sign

If the story is on Butler, whats with Luc’s picture?

Is this kid serious? He’s looking at Georgia for an engineering degree? What kind of smoke is Rodney blowing these days? What kind of engineering degree can one get at Georgia? Now I might buy that you can get a degree to drive a train for Southern Railway there. God help us if Georgia grads are designing and building large buildings and bridges.

What kind of engineering does UGA offer? I thought they didn’t really have an engineering school except the bioengineering.

Just like...

the garages that collapsed lately? Interesting to know where the engineers of those projects got their degrees. Both UGA and Georgia Tech are great schools. This is non debatable.

This is funny! Somebody should tell the poor kid that the GA BoR has designated Georgia Tech as the state’s premier engineering school, and as such, doesn’t dilute appropriations of dollars by sending them to fund ANOTHER engineering school in Athens.

Must be one of “bagman’s” newer recruiting strategies. Like the “Indian Giver” strategy we saw earlier this Summer. -SJ

Kid…Florida has better engineering programs than Georgia, and you don’t even have to leave the state. How bout a short trip over to Gainesville this fall…but the depth chart might be more than you want to take on right now. No problem for Luc, however. Future All-American LB rotation for the Gators to include Jeff Luc (this year’s top LB) and Jalani Jenkins (last year’s top LB). Along with Larentee McCray (one of the top LBs in Florida two years ago). And that might be the second team in 2010. Yikes.

Chip…the Orlando site is a great place to get current recruiting information on Florida high school players, and has been a great source of recruiting information for me for years. Glad you discovered it, too. But his kid sounds like he needs to make another visit to Georgia and forget about those other schools…and learn more about the academic programs they offer. Florida has better engineering programs than Georgia, but they also have a very young and deep LB depth chart that just might be too much for this kid…but not Luc.

FWIW, UGA is allowed to have one school of engineering, and it is Agricultural Engineering. The kids that come out of this school are not like most UGA grads; they are really pretty good workers who know their stuff. The school of Ag Engineering at UGA stands out like an island in a sea of academic mediocrity.

Hate to break it too you nerds, but I am actually the architect of record at TWO buildings at GaTech…and yes, I am a UGA grad. Management undergrad and Masters from UTk, Arch-I. I didnt get my masters from UGA because it wasnt offered, but thanks to my wonderful Management degree, I have been able to work my up and now own my own firm. Now get this straight…Architects design, engineers make sure MY designs can be implemented the way I want them…so yeah, I HIRE tech grads, and pay them for their services…sorry, guys. OH, and while you are out, pick up my clothes from the dry cleaners for me..Thanks.

Georgia Tech is the “Sonny’s” of engineering schools. I believe they designed a lot of those parking decks that have been collapsing in Atlanta. And, look at that erector set that they call a stadium. 38-3 still makes me laugh.

they know thier stuff? now that is f’n hilarious. i worked with one of them in an auto mfg facility.

he couldnt do simple math. he couldnt read blueprints. he had no concept of what true positioning was about.

he sure could fix a tractor or sprinkler system though.

when he worked with other engineers he tried to hide his incompetance by cursing yelling an brow beating his fellow engineers. (kind of like the republicans and health care) that obviously didnt go over to well.

hey john how are you doing now a days? eh?

Contrary to what Tech students would like to believe. UGA began offering engineering degrees in the following studies just a few years ago, and already they are on there way to becoming one of the best universities to offer these programs:

B.S in Biochemical Engineering

B.S. in Computer Systems Engineering

B.S. in Environmental Engineering

M.S in Biochemical Engineering

M.S. in Environmental Engineering

If he’s “committed” to UGA he shouldn’t be taking these visits to other schools. Richt should follow CPJ’s lead and tell him that as soon as he steps on the plane, his offer is rescinded. Or at least tell him that he should rescind his commitment so that UGA can look elsewhere also. You have a limited number of scholarships to offer. You can’t sit around waiting to see if this kid is serious, only to find yourself on the short end at the 11th hour.

This shows a lack of character. You don’t commit and then go on party junkets to other schools.

Duluth Gator, I concur. While football is king cotton and brings in lots of revenues for UGA and seems as though the University gets the better end of the deal still fair is fair. The kid gets a free ride and a great opportunity to be coached by some of the best so one day he might play on Sundays but please don’t jerk their string. Recruiters spend a lot of time, energy and money so for some kid to say I am going to look around but I am a Dawg is ludacrous, unbelievable and shows a complete lack of maturity. It says I commit but I really don’t. Kid, make up your mind but don’t talk out of both sides of your mouth. If UGA is where you want to go and you verbally commit then you do not take trips. You concentrate on football and show respect to your future teammates.

Our schedule wouldn’t look so bad if Georgia would step up and improve our strength of schedule. Didn’t the Dawgs play W Kentucky, W Carolina and C Michigan in the past 3 years. (I guess W Michigan was busy last year) Out of Conference is weak for the Gators, but does it really matter .. when it all comes down to how you play in the SEC. See you in the BCS game – Go Gators!
