Tennessee was late to land on Michael Taylor’s radar. But once it did the Volunteers’ combination of location and adoration resulted in the linebacker’s sudden decision to commit to their 2010 class.
Taylor, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound rising senior at Atlanta’s Westlake High, committed to coach Lane Kiffin while on an impromptu unofficial visit to Knoxville this weekend.
“I went up there and that was the school I felt was the most excited about me,” said Taylor, an outspoken and confident young man who often refers to himself in the third person. “It was a great fit when I went there. I saw they needed some help at linebacker and I’m just the guy they need.”
Taylor, considered a 3-star recruit by Rivals.com, said he went to about a dozen schools on unofficial visits over the past several months, including Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami, Florida Atlantic, Central Florida, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Alabama, Auburn, LSU and, of course, Tennessee. He said all of them except Auburn offered a scholarship.
But the Vols simply showed more love, he said. And he clearly the liked the school’s location near downtown Knoxville.
“It’s a beautiful city,” he said. “It’s a college town but it has life. It’s not dead with cow pastures and horses all around it. It has a city; it has something I can do. It’s a great place. I’m from California. I’m not trying to go to the middle of nowhere. I’m used to the city life. So Knoxville is a great place for Michael Taylor to be.”
Be sure to check back here early Monday morning and I’ll share some interesting details Taylor told me, including his thoughts on the Tennessee coaching staff and a bizarre incident while he was on campus.

Just curious here: How do you know that? I hear people say that all the time on these recruiting stories. I’m a Georgia grad and it sounds like this guy wouldn’t fit with the program too well anyways, so it’s not impossible to believe.

Everytime a recruit goes somewhere else… the typical UGA response is
“Oh, the dawgs must not have wanted him. The dawgs found someone else. This kid would be a third stringer at UGA.”
Get over yourselves. Just because a recruit didnt go to UGA doesnt me he isnt worth his salt. Kiffy is gonna start beating UGA every year along with Paul Johnson. Mark it down. UGA will have a 4 or 5 loss season every year from here on out.

Volman i see that you’ve been to the “classic” city before. You’re right, it is a little less than pleasing to the eye once you get away from downtown. However, I’ve found the further you get away from the campus, the nicer the people are. Most of the kids are snobbish metro kids who have been spoiled all their life.

Jacketfan – That’s a typical Jacket response too… Now that Paul Johnson’s here, UGA won’t win a game against Tech ever again, 45-42, Blah Blah Blah… Paul Johnson is a great coach. And I do believe that Tech will be much better with him. But give me a break, you guys win 1 game in the last 8 years , and it was by 3 points mind you, and all of a sudden think that you own us, and the last several years of Richt and UGA winning 10+ games, finishing in top 10, etc.. is over. The UGA-GT series will be much more competitive now, and overall UGA will still do just fine as we have with Richt before. Mark that down…
Oh and about Michael Taylor, we did stop actively recruiting him. He’s a great player and that’s a great pickup for Tennessee, but we’re almost full. Had he committed sooner, we would’ve accepted him with open arms. However, especially at his position, we simply don’t have the room. I agree with you, far too often the typical response from most people (no matter which school, not just UGA) is “we didn’t want him”, or “he’d never play here..”. This time, it was simply a numbers game, and he waited too long. Good luck to him though!

Banjo music? You know the book and movie Deliverance is a GA based movie right? Another classic example of an idiot without a clue trying to insult someone else.
And egomaniac? Well if UGA is content with the ‘modest’ highly ranked recruits who turn out to be mediocre, I’ll take egomaniac any day. Have fun with mediocrity. How’s that national title coming in Athens? Just how many years does it take Richt to get there? Seeing how UGA is now owned by the Gators and now soon to be UT, Richt better start scouting out a new school to retire to or just succumb to being the Arkansas of the East.

As a FL grad, I’m happy with the success against GA under Richt, but he’s a successful, proven winner. Unlike the undisciplined, classless big-mouth running the show up at UT, Richt has actually ACCOMPLISHED SOMETHING. Might want to save the Richt taunts until UT actually WINS A GAME under Kiffin.

Good get for the Vols and for their defense.
That said, come on people – Georgia fans aren’t saying that because they’re mad about him not coming to Athens – they’re saying it because the Dawgs are already filled up on defense. There really isn’t room for him unless he wants to compete with all those other LBs and DEs coming in. Like someone already mentioned, it’s a numbers game – and if he had made his decision earlier, UGA gladly would’ve taken him because he’s a good player.
I’m a fairly neutral observer but UT fans have taken on the personality of their coach – arrogant and cocky without Kiffin having coached a game. Dude must be infectious. Tech fans have become the same way – beat Georgia once in 8 years, and by 3 points, and now all of a sudden the Dawgs won’t win another game and lose 4-5 games a season? That’s laughable. Are those Techies mad because the Dawgs have been consitently better over the past decade?

Anyone that thinks UGA doesn’t want a top 150 recruit who was offered by an impressive list of schools is kidding themselves. “Oh we didn’t want him?” Just admit that Tennessee got a good player who everyone apparently offered. Maybe their coach is arrogant but can’t really argue with their recruiting. Especially when their state has no homegrown talent.
Just get over yourselves Dawgs! We beat you last year. If you don’t get to the SEC champ this year Richt will be on the hot seat. After all you just had the best QB in school history and the second best RB and have zero championships to show for it. If you are really getting all the great players you want every year then maybe it’s the coaching not the talent?

Tennessee,
From a Tech fan congrats on a great pick up. We are not ashamed, embarrassed or too unrealistic to admit we wanted him and offered him.
Apparently though most of the UGA fans on here attend weekly recruiting meetings with the UGA coaching staff and Richt doesn’t make a move without their approval. They know for a fact that UGA didn’t want him and want everyone to know. There are several other players that UGA doesn’t want and they will let us all know who they are after they commit elsewhere in the future.

MoreBuzzLessBark,
It’s really not that at all. The Dawgs recruited him, of course, but it’s apparent that they backed off after getting 3, possibly 4 outside linebackers already in this class. They have no need for another one unless it’s a supremely talented guy like Jeff Luc. Sure, UGA would’ve liked him…but a month or two ago.
Also, Stafford was not even close to being the best QB in school history – you’ve gotta look to Eric Zeier, David Green, and maybe even Buck Belue before you can think about Stafford. Just because Stafford was loved by NFL scouts doesn’t mean he was the best QB in school history.
Richt on the hot seat? I don’t think so. Maybe their DC…Martinez, I believe? UGA has 2 SEC titles this decade, 2 BCS bowl wins, and have won 7 out of 8 from Tech. The last ACC title for Tech was shared with FSU in 1998. So until Tech wins something of real, legitimate importance, I love all the talk.

If you follow recruiting at all, you would know that Georgia, Miami, and LSU backed off the guy. Georgia backed off when they received a verbal from a guy with the same measurables as Taylor (he should have committed when he had a chance; Miami backed off after he had a poor showing one of their camps (maybe he should not have performed); LSU backed off – - – I don’t know why. The bottom line is that Taylor jumped on a commitment to ensure that he had a spot. It would not surprise me if UT backs away if he has a subpar season.

Based on the young man’s comments I have to question both his motivation and his taste. Believe me there are at least three ‘college towns’ in Tennessee alone better than Knoxville…Memphis has more to do on one street than Knoxville’s entire metro area…Nashville has ten times more that Memphis and Knoxville combined, plus a superior school…and Chattanooga is prettier than all of ‘em with plenty to do – at least that’s what young Mr. Coleman thought when he dumped UT for UTC.
As for his reasoning…if he’s looking for more than a quality school and first-rate program, then he won’t last two years no matter where he goes.

Many of you seem to let your hatred for UGA cloud your judgment. Georgia only has 2 or 3 spots left in their recruiting class. The majority of the commitments are on the defensive side of the ball. Linebacker simply isn’t a priority.

To “Volman,” what Taylor probably DID NOT see was just how ugly and decrepid Neyland Stadium is– underneath all that aluminum siding and dirt under the bleachers. If you are the size of a sardine– and have the brains of one– Neyland Stadium is utopia. As for the comparison of the campus, UT is cramped– like well, a sardine can. It is the worst stadium in the SEC!

Hey, Do you all think this kid was hurt by UGA not keeping it’s offer to him? This could offer a reason why he decided to bash the Great city of Athens and UGA. Y’all please let the kid know that he will be OK in Knoxville. There are plenty of Georgia kids on the Vols roster. Just offer another though on this matter.

Chip : Thanks for the welcome mat. I’ll try to contain the optimism until the pudding shows a measure of proof, albeit at this time of year, we all see ourselves playing in DEC…

JJ and Taylor S got it right… Dogs are loaded so we don’t need this kid especially if he’s a big ego, me me me type. Where does some punk kid get off being disrespectful to colleges? UT can have him.

As a UGA grad its hilarious to get on these sites and read what you guys type. I typically save this kind of childish banter for gamedays after a bottle of whiskey. Maybe you guys should go get a new hobby. Tech fans, you ever notice how UT can sell out a stadium twice the size of yours? Until your program can sell out your (undersized) stadium, please refrain from talking

Come on fellow Dawg fans….. the tech fans are not worthy of our time. Until they can beat us more often than every now and then …. they are not a rivalry or worth our time. And the eight or nine that blog make up about half their normal attendance at a game. And yes Gator fans you have every right to brag. But at least while we are losing to you we are still winning ten or more games every year and going to BCS bowl games and winning them. There are very few coaches in America who have more job security then Richt!

His lowly three stars would have hurt the UGA final average. Backed off? Didn’t need him? From the looks of the Tech replay, you need every defensive guy you can get.

I am happy to have this young man become a much loved member of the University of Tennessee…. By the way, some guy was talking about Reggie White and the burning of churches, and yet at UGA you only have a select few young black men who are members of fraternities, and only a few who graduate (mostly athletes), yet you claim diversity. Knoxville is a beutifull city with wonderful river for rowing, boating next to campus, and not cow pastures as in UGA…. Go Vols

Oh, yeah. Great city, Knoxville. After practice, you can slide over to the Minnie Pearl Hall of Fame and try on her hat and petticoat. On special occassions, you can go to Dollywood. Yee-frickin-haw! They must have told him if you can’t go to college, go to TN!

Its people like us on this board who give college football fans in the South a bad rep. Im a huge UGA fan, and I read these boards and im embarrassed nearly 100% of the time. A player committs to UT, big deal!!!!! Yea hes a good MLB, yes it would have been nice to have him at UGA, but so what!? How many players can UGA sign in this recruiting class? 25ish? we cant sign everybody! they have to go play somewhere else! How many can Tech, UF, Bama, or whoever else sign? 25ish? There are enough players in the state of GA alone to fill up 3 of those teams’ class and it be a pretty solid class. Im sick of hearing “Tech stole one from UGA!” or “UGA stole a recruit from UF!” There are hundreds of kids who are capable for playing for UGA/GT in this state, yes other schools need to come recruit here, b/c UGA/GT cant sign all of them!

I have spent part of the last six Summers in Knoxville and have some good friends there and I do know what I’m talking about. Calhouns, Ruth’s Chris (formerly the Riverside Tavern) and Chesapeakes were the only decent places to eat in or near the downtown area. There was one other steakhouse but I only ate there once so I can’t comment on it. Knoxville has suffered the same fate that almost killed Athens and plenty of other small towns in the South, the malls and smaller retail centers are closer to where the masses of people live so that’s where they go. And anyone who has been there knows that they are constantly working on I-40 through town so you better use Kingston Pike if you want to go toward the West to the mall. I was not knocking Knoxville as much as reporting exactly what I had seen. I thought it was a shame that the old downtown area had fallen so badly – I do really like the Tennessee Theater though – reminds me of the Fox a bit. Another thing, I really don’t care where the kid goes to school to play football.

Tenn.Gentleman…… what does ” beutifull” mean in Tenn.? before you insult Georgia or talk about cow pastures, you might want to learn how to spell. But you are indeed keeping up the UT image. When you attempt a comeback on this comment…………. USE SPELL CHECK!!!!

Knoxville is obviously larger than Athens, but it has just as many “cow pastures” surrounding the premises as UGA does. I guess he missed that. I hope he really really likes chain restaurants.

Anyone on here who says basically piss on this kid cause he chose to go to a school that you don’t cheer for is an a-hole. You need to check your fan-ship at the door and be happy for the kid that he has a shot at his dream and a good education to fall back on in case the NFL doesn’t pan out. Since the majority of you on here are UGA fans, the majority of you should take a good look in the mirror tomorrow AM and think to yourself about the karma that will be paying you a visit soon…
