Georgia Tech gets high marks for 2010 class so far

Continuing with my breakdowns of the local recruiting classes, today we’ll be focusing on Georgia Tech’s class of 2010.

Tech is not going light up any of the national recruiting rankings chiefly because this will be such a small class. The Jackets currently have 13 scholarships to give. That’s up from 12 due to the recent departure from the team of defensive back Kamaron Riley. Most of Tech’s work is done as, with the commitment of defensive end Anthony Williams on Monday, it  already has 10 commitments.

There are two main areas of focus in the 2010 class: defensive line and defensive backfield. And Tech appears to have made some serious hay in both areas.

The Jackets’ recruiting in the secondary has been particularly impressive. They have four commitments, two cornerbacks and two safeties. Ryan Ayers (5-10, 175, South Paulding High) is a 4-star recruit and is generally considered the top cornerback in the state. B.J Bostic, a 5-10, 161-pound quarterback at Jefferson County, projects as a cornerback at the next level. He grades out at 77 — a solid 3-star rating — by ESPN’s analysts.

Isaiah Johnson (6-2, 175, Sandy Creek) is rated a 4-star safety by Rivals.com and rivals Newnan’s Alec Ogletree (Georgia commit) as the state’s top player at that position. With no guarantees junior All-America candidate Morgan Burnett will return for a senior season, Johnson could be pressed into duty quickly. Fred Holton (6-1, 196, Thomasville), a 3-star safety, rounds out an impressive group.

Williams’ commitment earlier this week put the Jackets over the top with regard to filling needs on the D-line. The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder from Union Grove High is a 4-star end along the lines of current Tech star Derrick Morgan. Both Morgan and Robert Hall are juniors, so the Jackets are getting “old” at that position. Ideally Tech would like to sign another D-end. Kareem Martin (6-6, 222, Roanoke Rapids, N.C) is one it has an eye on. Denzel McCoy (6-4, 275 Duluth-Northview), a 4-star-rated defensive tackle according to Rvials.com, and Shawn Green (6-2, 275, Grayson) address needs in the interior line.

The Jackets will lose at least two seniors off the offensive line after this season. Three-star commitments Morgan Bailey (6-4, 285, Loganville) and Catlin Alford (6-3, 275, Adairsville) are set to fill the void. Collins Hill’s Charles Perkins, rated one of the state’s top five running backs by Georgia High School Football Daily, completes an all-Georgia recruiting class.

Ideally the Jackets would like to add a linebacker or two, a defensive end and you can never have enough offensive linemen. But other than Martin they’ll like wait to see what prospects develop over the course of the high school football season. Regardless, recruiting coordinator Giff Smith is getting high fives in the conference room. . . .

Be sure to check out Tim Tucker’s UGA blog this morning for an assessment of the freshmen by Mark Richt. The Bulldogs’ coach is very impressed so far with one particular group.

Solid class coach Johnson and staff are putting together. Filling the needs of the roster is going to pay off for the jackets in the long run. CPJ and staff are doing a solid job of adding depth at all positions on the field. Still would like to see some added depth at the kicker/punter slots to improve on the special teams. Other than that, GT has done an excellent job with so few scholarships available to use this year. Future is BRIGHT on North AVE.

Nothing would be better than Florida, Georgia, and Georgia Tech being the best teams in America…not necessarily in that order every year. Johnson is a great coach and Tech is going to be really good for a while. I just hope Tech can keep him there. No one else has stayed for very long. If they do, Tech has the kind of tradition to become a national power again…if they aren’t already.

Only 113 days till the Tech beat down in Atlanta. Its posted in the locker room at Georgia…beware Tech fans its gonna hurt so bad you won’t be able to show your faces. Tech always has been and will continue to be a second tier college football program.I’ll bet you that there will be more Dawg fans at Grant Field than Tech fans for the game. Isn’t it amazing that Tech consistantly is out recruited by not only Georgia but also Clemson, Tenn, S. Carolina, Auburn and more recently Alabama in its own state. That fact alone should tell you that the Tech program is not thought of very highly throughout the South.Have your childish fun now Tech fans posting on this blog cause after this years game Tech will be back in its rightful place….irrelavant in college football!

GT is now and will be the top tier college football program in the state. (And of course it was years back.) But UGA’s reign is over.
And GT is, was, and will be the top school in the state. And that’s what colleges are supposed to be about. It is going to be so nice to know that not only are GT’s academics superior, but so are the major sports programs.

Don’t come on a site and spout a bunch of nonsense. It makes you look very stupid. Georgia Tech is and has always been very relevant in college football…both in history and tradition. Actually, Dan and others, your big wide receiver, Thomas, is a Pre-Season All ACC selection at wideout. Given that, it would be hard to argue that a receiver cannot be successful in this form of the spread option.

It’s nice to finally see some guys acting like adults on these blogs; kudos to you guys, and thanks.

I second the sentiment that it it would be great to have another powerhouse here in the SE, and that it would be GA Tech.

No one seems to complain while Florida sits atop of the heap while UGA and Alabama are trying to knock them off of their perch. And these are just two of the closest rivals in the area; let’s not forget LSU and some other “powerhouses” that have been around recently.

No, there’s plenty of room for another “big boy” in these parts, and to be honest, boys, the hype that it would bring to the renewed rivalry of the GA/GA Tech game every season. There would be a National TV audience, once again, and if either team was in a position to play for a national title, this game could help cement it for either team, assuming they win their conference championship too.

This would be great for the state of Georgia and the entire southeast.

I often wonder why people don’t quit get CPJ’s coaching style. He coaches to WIN. So, If the best QB’s and WR’s and OL players choose TECH. You will see more of the Run and Shoot mixed in the the Spread offense. Fans and any potential prospects listen up. Stephen Hill made the best decision of his life. He and BeyBey Thomas are going to be putting up some crazy numbers and people will finally understand how potent this offense is. All of the hoopla about not being able to pass will go away and the winners that want to win will choose TECH. At then end of there careers they will also have one of the most respected degrees in the world. Keep talking about RUN RUN RUN. Because we will be a powerful running team. But as the talented few start to realize that they can shine at TECH in the passing game, the full CPJ offensive package will be realized and TECH will return to national prominence. Again, to summarize. CPJ has a Spread Option offense that includes an expansive Run and Shoot package. All we need is the players to make it work. And as the posts above suggest, the talent is Ah Comin!!!!

You have not show this, ie 2008 and many years before. So, realize your rhetoric is palaver: loud and confused and empty talk; “mere rhetoric”. I thought I print the definition for you. Joe. I hate to break the news to you, but Tech unfortunately is nothing but a “feel good story” about a bunch of good kids who are not highly recruited (with the exception of players like JD)that come together every now and then and find a way to win 9 games and beat the State’s big boy 1 or 2 times every decade. Tech is simply just not the kind of program that can sustain any winning consistency against quality competition as evidenced last year against a narrow come from behind win over UGA and then a failure to show against LSU. Furhermore, as long as they continue to compete in the ACC, they’ll never gain any national attention and or respect. You simply can’t play teams weekend and week out like Wake, Duke and other mediocre ACC teams and then put a nonconference schedule together that includes the likes of Vandy, Miss. St and Jacksonville St. Seriously, Wake and Tech in a championship game in front of 20,000 people. That ought to tell you a lot about the importance and interest in your program and in your league. Enjoy your season!

This truth guy sounds like a surefire genius to me… Ga Tech hasn’t been relative to college football since leather helmets? The correct word is relevant and Georgia Tech won three SEC championships way back in the sixties too. In fact UGA only has three more SEC championships in 30 years more in the SEC. It would be nice to add a linebacker and maybe a center to this class, but when there are thirty spots in two years, Tech should fill the roster with four and possibly five star talent.

UGA will continue to be a big time program in the South but they have been big time disappointments to most UGA fans when it comes to finishing the job. I think it is great for the state to have Tech and UGA continue a healthy rivalry. I would like to express my thoughts on why Georgia Tech will begin attracting top shelf, wide receivers in the future. In my honest opinion, wide receiver recruits at Georgia Tech will learn how to block. That will be first nature to their position because of the run oriented offense. On the rare called pass play we have seen our receivers running alone in the great wide open. With a catch able pass thrown to them it’s an automatic 6 points. So it really is vital that our quarterbacks begin to raise their completion percentages. When they start throwing strikes then our receivers will start making touchdowns. Hopefully this begins to happen this year. Thomas and Hill should make it to the next level if this starts happening this year.

What the upcoming wide receiver recruits should realize in the next few years about Georgia Tech wide receiver graduates [ to the next level ] is that the pro coach’s appreciate a wide receiver who already knows how to block. This will help the player break into the starting line up faster. Also, while Georgia Tech’s wide reciever’s numbers won’t be gaudy; their catch for touchdown ratio will. Imagine a reciever catching only 3 passes in a game, yet scoring twice. I think this is possible and I think wide reciever recruits will take notice. It’s kind of like ,” if you build it, they will come. “

I predict that Tech will lose to Georgia by at least 17 points…… Big G…. do you think your post scares me…you support a team that actually dropped out of the SEC because they thought they were better than everyone else and where did it get Tech…relegated to a second tier team in the ACC.When Tech consistantly has double digit win seasons, wins the ACC, and plays in meaningful BCS bowl games you’ll be able to pound your chest and tell me and everyone else that will listen how great Tech is until then….the Tech football program is irrelevant!

YOU KNOW when they start talking trash and sticking their noses in our blogs and commentary … GT IS DOING JUST FINE!

TampaGator and Banker Dawg, thank you very much for representing your schools so well. I know there are some idiot Tech fans on here too, but you guys really do a good job of representing what college football is about: cheering for your team and knowing football. I get so frustrated by fans who don’t know $hit about football getting on here on talking about how their team is the greatest team on the planet and that every other team sucks and will go 0-12. Of course those are probably the same fans that have to watch the game with sound to know what the penalties are and can’t tell by the hand gestures.

The best place I’ve ever experienced a college football game is in Blacksburg. Those guys know football and are actually 90% gracious hosts. Which gets back to the subject of this blog. VT has been a national program for about 10 years now with principles very similar to CPJ’s: hard work, focused recruiting, and guys that will fit his system. Except Beamer’s system is ball control, defense and special teams.

The recruiting class that CPJ is building now is small, but is very capable of being a replica of this year’s Morgan, Dwyer, Jones, Burnett, Nesbitt and Claytor.

Oh, I forgot to say that Atlanta Truth is an idiot with no logical skills. At no time has he even come close to making a coherent argument and we are all stupider for having read what he has to say. May God have mercy on his soul.

I went to GT beatdown by LSU and it was easy to see that LSU had more fans in Atlanta for the game, this is a sad showing for such a powerhouse. With new rings and all your team performed as expected, the truth hurts!

I have to say I’m with you Atlanta truth. So you misspelled one word on one post… Big deal….

The fact is that UGA has dominated the bugs for many years and with respect to the fluke of 45-42, I’m willing to bet the trend continues.

As far as NC’s are concerned, 1990 was a total joke. No one and I mean no one outside of the metro Atlanta area considered GT to be equal to the Buffalo’s . NO WAY

Major bowl game wins ? Ha hahahahahah

Ugly school, Ugly colors, Ugly women

Tech does have tradition, so yes Bug fans gloat about teams 30 years ago.

I can sum up GA Tech football as exactly what it is. Something to watch on Thursday nights if nothing else is on.

buffs had a loss-we didn’t/barely beat neb. at home, we clobbered ‘em on a neutral field/shows how pointless not having a playoff is/at least we don’t live 40 years in the past/let’s see what NOW brings/there are now enough good HS football programs that the # of good players who want (& are encouraged to get!) to also get a real coolege education is increasing- the# of schools that do this is not/us, uc-b, stanford, even dookies stand to benefit…

Only 113 days till the Tech beat down in Atlanta. Its posted in the locker room at Georgia…beware Tech fans its gonna hurt so bad you won’t be able to show your faces. Tech always has been and will continue to be a second tier college football program. I’ll bet you that there will be more Dawg fans at Grant Field than Tech fans for the game. Isn’t it amazing that Tech consistently is out recruited by not only Georgia but also Clemson, Tennessee, South Carolina, Auburn and more recently Alabama in its own state? That fact alone should tell you that the Tech program is not thought of very highly throughout the South. Have your childish fun now Tech fans posting on this blog cause after this year’s game Tech will be back in its rightful place….irrelavant in college football!

When was the last time Tech had a great coach? the fifties?….When was the last time you had great talent…Reggie Ball?…please stop I’m laughing again…..Please don’t forget our golf team and equestrian teams winning NC’s…How about our 02′and 05′ SEC Championships…… you know as long as were counting. When was the last time Tech won the mighty ACC? ….keep dreaming and posting on this blog….I need a good laugh every day.

The truth hurts doesn’t it Tech Fans…..Tampa Gator is that all you have? Doak Walker award? Choice?…get a life. I’d start naming the Georgia backs and players now in the NFL..but I’d run out of room. What a bunch of pompous phonies. How many championships did Calvin Johnson win for Tech while he was there? And you’re telling me I give Georgia bloggers a bad name….stop I’m really laughing hard now. Come see me when you win the ACC…or a BCS game…or sell out your stadium for a home game. Until then NOBODY that closely follows college football thinks Tech football is RELEVANT!

Are you kidding me. Tech wasn’t even a consensus NC winner in 1990. The poll that mattered didn’t have Tech #1.You asked if you are supposed to be scared by my rhetoric…..I really don’t care. All I do is state the facts. Just because you Tech fans live in a dream world and interpret them the way that makes you feel better about yourselves is your problem. Believe me your team is not that good. Average at best. Tech will not win the ACC, and definitely WILL NOT beat Georgia. In looking at the Tech schedule…I see Tech losing at least five games and possibly six. I predict that Tech will lose to Georgia by at least 17 points……Tech is a team that actually dropped out of the SEC because they thought they were better than everyone else and where did it get Tech?…relegated to a second tier team in the ACC. When Tech consistently has double digit win seasons, wins the ACC, and plays in meaningful BCS bowl games you’ll be able to pound your chest and tell me and everyone else that will listen how great Tech is until then….the Tech football program is irrelevant!
