Some of state’s top prospects fall short of Top 5 rankings

It’s Wednesday, which means it’s time to have a look around and see who’s reporting what where in regards to recruiting.

Let’s start here in our fair state, where esteemed colleagues Todd Holcomb and Chip Saye are making their e-mailed newsletter, Georgia High School Football Daily, an anticipated part of my morning ritual. These two covered preps for years and years for the AJC, so they really know their stuff when it comes to high school football in the state.

Anyway, I found it quite interesting that, in their last two editions in which they ranked the state’s top five running backs and wide receivers, respectively, some of the better known — and highly ranked — recruits were not included.

GHSF Daily addresses this with qualifying remarks immediately above the rankings: “In making these choices we value a history of production over potential.”

Its top five for running backs (listed apphabetically): MLK’s Mack Brown (Florida), North Clayton’s Clarence Jackson (Ole Miss) Wesleyan’s Kyle Karempelis, Grayson’s Ean Pemberton and Collins Hill’s Charles Perkins (Georgia Tech).

Noticeable absent: Southwest DeKalb’s Kendrun Malcome, a Georgia commitment, and Loganville’s Storm Johnson, an LSU pledge.

The top five wide receivers: Henry County’s Markeith Ambles (Tennessee)m Blake Gowder, Tai-ler Jones (Stanford), South Gwinnett’s Jonathan Krause (Vanderbilt) and Calhoun’s Da’Rick Rogers (Georgia).

Noticeably absent: Georgia commitment Michael Bennett of Peachtree Ridge, Vanderbilt Commitment Bradley Roby of Peachtree Ridge and Auburn commitment Antonio Goodwin of Washington.

Again, GHSF Daily addresses such omissions when it talks about Karempelis’ inclusion over future SEC players Malcome and Johnson. “We’re a high school newsletter, not a recruiting service, and it’s hard to argue with 1,917 yards, 458 receiving yards, 26 touchdowns and a state title.”

So there.

Chip—Is this Alli kid eligible to play this year, or will he merely be attending school and playing next season? I am fascinated by the concept of a wide receiver whose academic achievement vastly exceeds the minimum requirements. Not something you see every day.

Atlanta Gator…Ali is eligible to play this year (and he will be practicing with the team starting on Thursday), but he will be undoubtedly reshirted because, although very fast and athletic, he has very football experience (having spent his first three years in Canada and then one year at the private academy in the states…and he has earned all his credits to graduate from high school). This kid is a real find, but it will take him a couple of years to get his college receiving skills fine tuned in order to get on the field as a WR at Florida.

Another neat thing about the kid…he turned down Harvard to play football at Florida. Sounds like this kid is a real winner and will make a great Gator (he also has world class speed).

“there’s a man that makes a living”

There’s a man who makes a living.
People are who. Things are that. How can we expect our kids to learn if we don’t teach them properly?

Thanks for setting the record straight, Stinger. Having a journalism degree no longer qualifies you to know correct grammar. If I had any hair left, I would pull it out when I see how poorly some of these bloggers write.

Fast Eddie…I don’t believe blogging requires a journalism or an English degree. No one is trying to write a term paper here.

I heard from someone on the LSU football team that Storm Johnson had his scholly taken back by LSU. I know how big a deal you made when he committed, I’d think you’d report on this fact too.

Have anyone seen Tay Willis East Coweta High School. Tay 5′8 170 running back/returner led region 4-AAAAA in rushing last year with almost 1600 yards. He is the most explosive back i seen last year. After watching him on film early last year I thought he was good not great but when I watch him live against Creekside I knew he was the real deal. I really saw his sub 4.3 speed to go along with his 335lb bench press. The real test against Newnan top ranked defense confirmed that this kid is for real. I have watch Mack Storm and the kid from Grayson and I tell you this kid belongs on the list.
