I promise this is not going to be a daily update but Kwame Geathers still has not arrived at the University of Georgia.
I report that because I just walked out of coach Mark Richt’s preseason news conference and that was one of the first items he addressed in his opening remarks. The Bulldogs begin summer camp with a practice later this afternoon and a rather ominous opener against Oklahoma State awaits in 32 days. Geathers, even if he was already on campus, probably won’t participate in that contest. But, for now at least, his absence is at the forefront.
So here’s what Richt had to say on the matter:
“Kwame’s still not here yet. He’s still going through the NCAA review. He’s still jumping through hoops. Every hoop he’s had to jump through he’s jumped through fine so far. It’s hard to say how long it will take.”
Of course, there was a follow-up question. “Exactly what is the NCAA reviewing?,” somebody asked.
“It’s an academic review,” Richt answered. “The courses he’s taken they’re reviewing and the validity of everything. We’ve not hit a wall on it. It’s just kind of a slow process.”
So there you go. The next update I plan to give you is when he arrives or it’s determined he won’t be. . . . But I never say never!
More updates coming later, including Richt’s comments on his new philosophy to play every true freshman skill player (in his book this includes linebackers and tight ends, or all non-linemen and quarterbacks). As always, I’ll be close by to answer you questions.

Chip…this story is very similar to the John Brown (5-star DL player from Lakeland, Florida) story a few years back for the Gators. It took forever for Brown to get through the NCAA clearinghouse and he finally did somehow. Then he was obviously ill prepared to be a college student and, even after much assistance and encouragement from the Florida staff, could not make it academically (and therefore athletically) at Florida. Some of these players would be better served to go to less academically focused college, even a lower division to play. They would still get their shot at the NFL, but would be much more successful (especailly academically) in a less demanding environment (like Tennessee in Brown’s case…just kidding Vols fans). No doubt that Geathers is a football talent. There is some doubt, obviously, that he is a right fit for the University of Georgia academically…at least right now. This has nothing to do with the kid’s character, which I am sure is just fine. It has more to do with what is best for the kid at this time, which Georgia, Florida, USC, etc. etc. don’t always put ahead of what is best for that school’s football program.

dooley….me, too. I am sick of reading about the Michael Vick and (the NY Giant receiver) type of stories. At least camps are starting and we can now start reading about who is winning the first string tailback or left tackle job (and read and think about recruiting after the BCS national championship game). It is almost time for kick off…can’t wait. Saturday afternoons and evenings in the fall…watching college football…is there anything better?…well, maybe one thing. P.S…..Wouldn’t it be nice if no college football player does anything stupid again until….forever.

It’s good to have a coach that cares not only about athleticism but also academics and the person in general. For all the haters, please see Jamar Chaney as example numero uno. Not only did Richt call Croom and MSU, he did everything possible for the kid knowing he would not be accepted at UGA. Sometimes, coaches do have the kid’s interest at heart.

With a name like Kwame he must be one tough dude and obviously Richt likes him or they wouldn’t go to so much trouble to bring him in.

Well there you go…until Geathers arrives the Dawgs are obviously DOOMED!!!
Hope the Senate extends that “Cash for Clunkers” program this Friday so Kwame can get to UGA…and SOON!!!!
Chip? Did any other signees report yesterday????
Also, Which is bound to happen first…Geathers arriving at UGA or Obama’s birth certificate being authenticated?????
Speaking of Hawaii there are two things that are obvious about the 50th state…their football team was overmatched in a BCS game and our President that came from there is overmatched by the oval office.
Heres hoping for better days and stories CHip.
