Georgia Tech is relying on more in-state players now, such as Jonathan Dwyer (21, right). (Johnny Crawford / AJC)
Perusing Georgia Tech’s list of commitments for the 2010 signing class, it doesn’t take long for a trend to jump out at you. The Yellow Jackets have eight pledges so far. Every single one is from the state of Georgia.
In fact, coach Paul Johnson has said more than once he wouldn’t be surprised their entire allotment of scholarships — the Jackets currently have only 12 available this year– goes to Georgia residents. He’d just as soon they would.
Tech added yet another player from Georgia on Monday. Former Henry County star Chris Jackson announced his plans to transfer from Alabama, where he played mostly special teams as a freshman last season, to The Flats.
That’s somewhat of a break with tradition. In the past it was believed that Georgia Tech, due to its unique academic environment and urban setting, needed to search far and wide for players to fit its criteria. Clearly Johnson and his staff don’t think so.
“We really put an emphasis on Georgia,” Tech recruiting coordinator Giff Smith told me this week. “We believe there are players we can win with right here.”
That was certainly was the case last November in Athens. Georgia’s offensive stars that day were quarterback Matthew Stafford (Texas), tailback Knowshon Moreno (New Jersey) and flanker A.J. Green (South Carolina). Tech’s were quarterback Josh Nesbitt (Greensboro), running back Jonathan Dwyer (Marietta) and wide receiver Demaryius Thomas (Dublin). The Jackets, in case anyone needs to be reminded, won 45-42.
Georgia, which has seen its national profile rise under coach Mark Richt, continues to attract a lot of out-of-state talent. Of the Bulldogs’ 16 commitments so far, seven — nearly half — are from outside the state’s borders. At one point they had more commitments from Florida (6) than they did the home state.
That’s OK with Tech. It has six players from within an hour’s drive of its campus.
“It’s like an Atlanta all-star team, ” Centennial defensive tackle Denzel McCoy told the AJC’s Michael Carvell recently. “I’m loving it. All of us are from Georgia and we’re going to show people that you don’t have to reach across the nation to get talent. It’s in our backyard.”

It’s great to get in-state talent, but it’s not like UGA isn’t still gettin their usual 4 and 5 star recruits. Don’t forget about Roddy Jones; he’s from Chamblee. As usual, GO JACKETS!

Chris was a 4 Star that played mainly Wide Receiver, but also some out of the backfield and some DB. Chris also did some returning in High School. Chris was also a devastating blocker so at about 6′1″ and 210 lbs, he should be a great fit at the A-Back position now that GA Tech’s run ‘n shoot component has been added to the Tech Offense.
As a transfer, Chris will have to sit out a year, so depending on what happens with D. Thomas, Chris could also move outside, across from from S. Hill when the time comes.
Chris is a quality young man who was originally a GA Tech commit before the Chan Gailey to Paul Johnson switch. He was swayed to Bama; convinced that the new Offense wasn’t going to work in this high caliber of Collegiate Football setting. Chris was always a great Tech ambassador, and it’s great to have him back in the “family”.
Another great thing to have Chris back at GA Tech is that he can speak to all other recruits considering GA Tech and tell them from personal experience what it’s like to be on an SEC “powerhouse,” and to explain that this High School Offense can really work. Chris can also explain why he came to GA Tech out of Alabama.

Good points GA Tech Insider. Chris can let them know that it “ain’t all that” in the SEC.
GT will win with GA players. I never though about what Denzel said about it being like an Atlanta All Star team. That is actually pretty exciting to hear. Also, a great way to entice new recruits who may have played in the HS State Champ game.

It would probably be a good idea for CPJ to search for some out of state kids. Most of the parents of these HS Student-Athletes will watch the news and see that their kids are pretty likely to be robbed at GT’s wonderful campus. However, Chris Jackson should be able to explain to the new recruits his stance with his “If you can’t cut it in the SEC, play in the ACC” speech.
Ahhh Tech, where the ladies say “The odds are good, but the goods are odd”. Look it up on YouTube.

For decades we’ve heard the Tech fans whine about how they can’t recruit all the in-state players they want because their curriculum is soooooo haaaaaard.
So in summary, Paul Johnson has either (Everybody vote!)…
(1) … made all the in-state players smarter overnight, allowing Tech to sign a class dominated by in-state players.
(2) … changed the curriculum to allow the signing of such a class, or
(3) … exposed that tired old excuse for what it is: elitist whining

Flap, you’re right. Many D1 players do not transfer to the SEC because they will continue to be back ups. They can thrive at Tech and the ACC schedule. EX. I think Chris Rainey transferred from USC to UF. He is currently splitting time in the UF backfield. He would be ahead of Dwyer if he went to Tech.

Mike – Check the LSU stats against GA Tech. Tech had about the same Offensive numbers as LSU, including yards and Time of Possession. The difference? Tech 3 Turnovers to LSU’s 0; GA Tech’s penalties compared to LSU’s, and Special Teams.
It was the same issues that GA Tech had against North Carolina. In fact, had GA tech hit some early passes (they were open, just like they were against Miami), the game may have been totally different. The way LSU’s Offense had to play, and the way LSU’s Defense had to watch out for Tech’s Offense may have change everyone’s strategy. GA Tech beat GA Tech as much as LSU beat GA Tech.
I would also make mention that GA Tech ended the year with one of the youngest Teams in the Country last year (I believe 18 of their starters were Freshmen and Sophomores and there will only be 6 Scholarship Seniors on the Team this coming Season). Due to injuries and Scholarship limitations at the end of the year, Tech had several Linemen playing out of position (i.e. TE’s moved to A-Back and then to O-Line).
Also, because of the loss of Scholarships, GA tech had a major limitations of Scholarship Offensive Linemen, so when they were decimated with injuries towards the end of the Season, rather than burning Red Shirts, Paul Johnson decided to play Scout Team players; moving them into the Two Deep.
These guys had been playing against the First and Second Team Defenses, playing the role of the opposing Team Offenses, which meant they hadn’t even practiced the GA Tech Spread/Triple Option. At the end of the Season, it was like several of Tech’s Offensive Linemen were just learning the Offense for the first time.
This coming Season, the injured O-Line starters (the ones that came in and played the second half of the Season so well) are back at full strength, and all of the Scholarship Red Shirt Linemen, who have had a full year of learning the Spread/Triple Option, are now able to play, adding much needed depth to the Offensive line of scrimmage.
Defensively, people seem to forget that GA Tech also had a new D-Coordinator last year as well. This gives GA tech another full year to become acclimated to learn the new schemes, and become comfortable with all of the new assignments. With the strength of the Defense being the LB’s and DB’s, there should be ample support for the new Defensive Linemen to earn their stripes as the Season progresses. I would also suggest that there were several rotations on the D-Line last year, so don’t sell these guys short.
In a nutshell, Mike, no one is forgetting about LSU. In fact, I’m quite sure the Jackets are using that game for motivation for the coming Season.

A lot of not so flattering comments from some Dawg fans here, but, don’t kid yourself…Saban is not playing a freshman, even on special teams, if he doesn’t have serious skills.
He was highly regarded coming out of high school and was part of Alabama’s #1 recruiting class.

Of course, you are right. UGA will always get the players they want from the state of Georgia. You are also probably right that UGA seldom wants any of the young men Georgia Tech signs- either from within the state of Georgia or elsewhere. And you are spot on that UGA should be favored to destroy Georgia Tech every single year!
So what?! It didn’t work out that way in 2008. Nothing you can say makes any difference for the outcome in 2009. That will be determined on the field. You should be favored and you will probably win- we will all just have to wait and see!

Outside of all the childish comments back and forth with the UGA fans:
I think Chris will be an excellent weapon in a year. If he plays at reciever, it will just give more depth and he could possibly earn a starting job right out of the gate. If he plays at A-back, that will give tech an excellent threat in a run/catch combo back. He would be perfect for little slant routes coming out of the slot to catch teams off guard. Tech has so many dangerous playmakers its unbelievable. UGA fans can say that these ‘playmakers’ are only 2 and 3 star recruits all they want. Dwyer (4 stars) Chris Jackson (4 stars) and then Roddy Jones is only a 3 star, but we all remember what he did in Athens last year. Then you throw in Anthony Allen, Marcus Wright, Bebe, and Stephen Hill. Tech has so many playmakers. Future is bright. GO JACKETS

CPJ is doing it the right way. You win by developing the ties at home. I’m a little concerned for my Dawgs, while it is nice to bring in names from other states, you need to take care of business at home. So far, there hasn’t been that big of a negative; seem to be getting just about everyone they targeted. Really? Calculus? Shut up you dorks! True, Georgia Tech has a load of Georgia talent, but so does Georgia Southern. What does that mean? UGA has, and will continue to get the best players out of it’s own state as well as the best of the best from other states. That’s what perennial Top 10 programs do…Something Tech would know nothing about. Arguing Tech vs UGA is like arguing USC vs UCLA. Sure, there may be an occasional upset, but there is a clear front-runner. In 20 years, maybe things are different, but I doubt it. For now, be happy with the occasional upset of a National Powerhouse and deal with being a 2nd tier program finishing between 15-25.
Really? Calculus? Sure, they’re are some intellectually challenged on this blog…Tech and UGA fans alike. But, to bring up Tech’s superior academic requirements is a clear side-step from arguing your football programs shortcomings. I’d like to mention an important thing that seems to have slipped the jacket fans mind and that the UGA fans may not be aware of. We don’t play football like other colleges. We aren’t the strong QB in the pocket kind of team and we haven’t been for a while. We’re more about speed, agility, and deception. We’re not *looking* for the kids with “No.1″ next to their name. We don’t want the best players we want the RIGHT players. CPJ is going after the right stuff to get the job done. That doesn’t always entail getting the No. 1, 2 or 3 players in the state. CPJ also recognizes that for in-state students this is not a football team or a stepping stone to the NFL it’s a legacy. We are Ramblin’ Wrecks from Georgia Tech and we are some of the country’s top engineers.
ps. “don,t worry tech we georgia bulldog fan take anyone alone they wear that buulldog uniform” is entirely unintelligible.

Tech is just getting bodies. Scout has the ACC rated the 6th best recruiting conference and Miami is the highest rated school in the ACC at the 21st position. This is a trend that has been getting worse for the ACC for several years. You can’t even sell out your championship game. Soon the ACC will not even be a BCS conference.

Georgia has 8 commits from outside of Georgia.
Tech has ZERO commits from outside of Georgia.
And…wait for it…..Georgia has MORE commits from inside Georgia than Tech does.
Georgia is, as usual, loading up, while Tech makes due with leftovers. Better enjoy last year’s 3 point win. Because UGA, which has beaten Tech 14 times in 17 years, is about to reel off another long streak.

If you only judged by UGA’s highly touted recruiting recruiting classes year after year, GT shouldn’t even bother to show up for the game – we should lose to UGA by at least 2 or 3 TDs every year. And yet look at how close so many of the games have been. Being a GT alumnus, I certainly love it when we win, regardless of how infrequently that occurs, but, having said that, I actually pull for UGA to win except when they play us, another ACC team, or OU, just like I pull for Ga. Southern, West Ga., or Ga. State (when they start playing).

You are right GT should have lost by 2 TDs but once in eight years Sh1t happens. The real problem is GT is not important to UGA anymore. The SEC schools are.

i can’t wait to see how the blogs read after Georgia lays the smack down in Atlanta! really, if you have a offer from Ga thats where all the young Georgia ball players want to go. you win one game, in 8 years, 8 years, and you make it seem like jesus has returned to Earth. Tech will be out of the game by halftime!

The ACC is a lost cause, please…what have the leg humpers done in the history of college football? Other than 1980, the pups have maintained a ‘piss like a puppy’ attitude. Take all your five star recruits, uga vs Tech overall record and it ONLY adds up to ONE national championship! Your hiney sniffers have had their chance at the elite…step aside, we have a history at this and it’s our turn to show you how it’s done! dogman, we were ‘out of the game by halftime’ last year…we came back! Here’s a thought on how the blogs will read after the smack down in Atlanta… “I hate losing to the nerds! cmr needs to be fired!”, “If uga didn’t have so many injuries…” or, one of my favorite’s, “The refs lost it for us”.

Have you looked at the requirements to get in UGA. GTacclosers can’t touch it. I bet FSU and Miami are rethinking their association with the ACC.

The ACC is a lost cause, clever!!! Add ‘loser’ to someones’ name and you’ve got some serious ’smack talkin’ skills! What have we done?! We have multiple NC trophies, including the most recent one between the two schools. We’ve accomplished some things since then…perhaps, the mutts should consider leaving it, too! But, then again, what would you have to brag about then?!

this blog is like a bad reality show… but in a weird way is somehow addicting to read… I have to say even though I am the biggest UGA phan, Tech did whip up on us in the 3rd quarter. In fact I have to say, I beelieve that the beat down will continue well into the next decade…
I think I will see where we are ranked in the preseason rivals recruiting tracker… That will make me feel better..

The ACC is a lost cause, lawyer?! Are you talking to the voices in your head? 5000 fans and half of 76000 seats?! Your math is off a bit… why would you add seats when there are 71000 empty seats….did they put you guys in the restrooms? Those seats weren’t ‘added’, they were already there and ya’ll just fell for the ole, “THIS is where the dogs sit” routine! Too funny!

I was at the championship and few GT fans came. I bet and I am being kind to a small school, a third of seats were filled. Now take away the other team and the Jacksonville sports fans that had nothing todo………..GT does not support their team. That is a fact.
Now when the Bulldawgs come to town they have to add 11000 seats to the stadium. That is a fact too. I would bet that even a GT fan could find out these facts and if you did not know it then you are not a sports fan.
Get your facts straight before you waste my time. The ACC has no one coming to their championship game.

So you were at the Wake GT championship game? Do you freakin remember how miserable the weather was that day. And then add that Wake has a an alumni base that is about as big as some other colleges fraternities and you do have a small turnout to the game… How many Wake/Tech fans do you think jump on the bandwagon of those schools. Very little.. Either you went to both schools or had a family member go to those schools to be a traveling fan… They don’t have billy bumpkin fans… Go UGA… I beelieve in you!!!
