I don’t blame the coach for standing up for his players. Its his job to look out for their best interest and futures as football players and his obligation to them as the players move towards manhood. My problem is with the low graduation rate of the players from UGA. After football what are the guys prepared for. Most of them will be unemployed with no education, marketable job skills and only a book of pictures to show what they have done. Good job coach. Send your kids somewhere else.

Listen the coach is doing the right thing for the student, his kid/player… If he does not take care of his players then who will. I would have banned UGA as well and Im a big UGA fan. Its ok for UGA to take an offer away but you shouldnt allow a kid/player to travel to your school with his family and then turn him away. Im sure they knew they changed their mind about the kid before he even got there…

Dell McGee is still bitter that Georgia didn’t come calling on him! He had to settle for Auburn. I went to Carver High. I was one of the few white boys who actually had some colleges interested in me. But Coach Wallace Davis…….?? Did you know they won State as soon as he retired???? Not a coincidence!!! The coach is doing a great thing for his players. If you are good enough to be recruited by UGA then you are certainly good enough to play elsewhere. Who would want someone they care about to go to the cesspool in Athens?

It’s hard to see how Richt could be right on this.We havn’t taken a qb, so Burns ‘’slot” shouldn’t be full.Has our coaching staff decided to issue ”committable” and non-committable offers” like Meyer now ? If so, we’ve lost the moral high ground, we’re no better than Saban, Meyer and the other lost souls.

First of all, Auburn people go NUTS anytime UGA’s program edges ahead of theirs. It’s just a matter of time until Auburn finds a way to “cheat” their way back to respectability.

On the other hand, it sounds more and more that the coaches under Richt continue to drop the ball in different ways. I like Mike Bobo, but Mark Richt is never going to win a national title with Mike Bobo as his OC. Same thing with Willie M. as his DC. Those two will easily be out-schemed in a BCS title game by a superior staff. Sorry, the truth hurts.

Finally, Garner should be coordinating communication, not Bobo or any of the others coaches. Richt better get this under control quickly. Another back-to-back 9-3/8-4 seasons will get him on the hot seat under Damon Evans.

I feel bad for the kid and his family. I totally blame Bobo and whoever else was responsible for recruiting this kid, however there is a qb at Miami Northwestern, Teddy Bridgwater, who is a STUD! He built the same as Burns, but is a better qb with a stronger arm and a lot of mobility and this kid wants to come to Georgia. As far as the McGee at Carver. I know him personally and he loves his players and would do anything to protect them. That community really supports their football team and school, but not allowing Georgia to recruit there is rediculious! Georgia will continue to recruit at Carver and there is nothing McGee can do. By the way, that principal at Carver, lets just say he is an extended version of Mr. Clarke from Eastside High Lean on Me.

I think a few things need to be clarified:

1. Nobody has a problem with the fact that UGA rescinded the offer. That happens in recruiting. You obviously try to minimize it, but it’s still a numbers game. The problem was that UGA didn’t properly communicate with this kid, and they let him travel with family at his own expense to a big event expecting to commit. That’s just either poor judgment, poor management or both.

2. UGA can still recruit kids from Carver. They just can’t do it on campus (and the ban has the principal’s support). They can still talk to them on the phone and visit them at their house. And I don’t know what some of you idiots are thinking claiming that any taxpayer has the right to hang out at public high schools. Why don’t some of you 35 year olds cruise over to your local high school and start hanging out with these teenagers…you know flirt with the girls on their way to class…wonder the halls telling the athletes what college they should attend. Just try that and see how long it takes for you to get tossed off the property or carried off in a police cruiser.

3. This really doesn’t hurt the kids. How many kids from one high school are going to be recruited to play football at UGA? Maybe one a year…or one every three years. And if UGA wants him, then every other school probably does as well, so it’s not like some kid is going to miss out on a scholarship because of this. It would be different if it were Valdosta State, where you could say you are robbing some future kid of a chance to go to college.

4. Either way, I think we all know this “ban” will be lifted right after signing day. UGA will be careful to avoid mistakes like this in the future and the coach is doing the right thing – standing up for one of his kids and showing the other 50 on the team (who will never play college football) that he has their back.

Dell doesnt need to pull anything to get this kid in the limelight as every Carver game is attended by coaches from schools all over the south and beyond.

Personally I think the Carver coach is taking one for the team. I think he did this, not to embarrass anyone but to help put this kid in the limelight so that he could find another school to attend. Certainly coaches can have big egos and maybe this one does. However, I have seen the positive influence of coaches on the lives of students and commend them for their commitment to the youth of our state. I am a math teacher who adores our high school coach for the work he does with our students and his commitment to helping them learn the ropes in life as well as sports.

I love this stuff! Anything to make those DAWGS look bad makes me smile. They got a commit from a better kid and that Burns kid waited too long to pull the trigger. The ship had sailed, but UGA forgot to blow the horn and tell Mr. Burns. Me personally I wish every HS in the country would ban the UGA morons. It does not matter, they have a top 5 recruiting class every year and find a way to be slightly better than mediocre. I love the DAWGS, no matter the talent they can overcome it and lose to less talented club. I hope they can keep the streak alive this year. If they can find a way to go on probation next, it would make me smile.

I’ve known Coach McGhee and coached against him for several years now. He is a class guy. I don’t see this as a power trip on his part at all. He is simply trying to deflect some of the hurt from his player. On the other hand though, we don’t know all of the details yet. It is possible that he didn’t qualify academically, didn’t pass the ACT, got into some kind of trouble, or (what I think is true) UGA has accepted all of the QBs they need in this class. Georgia needs D-linemen more than QBs at this point, and I’m sure they will do what they need to do to win even if Burns gets his feelings hurt. CMR keeps his job by winning, not by making every 3 star recruit happy.

I have read plenty of stories where a young man that has committed to a school told them right before signing day he was not attending. Its all a mess and we the fan and parents do not do anything to help the system

If my team’s coach renigs on an offer there must be somethings wrong with the kid (or at a minimum it’s his fault for waiting). However, if my rival school’s coach does it then the kid has been grossly violated and the coach is scum.

well for the most part i am a carver tiger and burns is my friend i think georgia was wrong for doing that and i agree with coach mcgee and his decision… he’s protecting his other players from letting that happen to them… georgia will realize that devin is a very outgoing young man that is still going to make it… that door closed but trust and believe that god will open up another one… that’s not his loss its theis because when they turnt him down they lost crwford, crowell and wright… neither one of them want to go there anymore….. so aha may god bless gorgia coaches and i love my school(go tigers)… we will shine…

This is all great, AL, AU and FL “fans” talking about Georgia cheating…makes me laugh.

As far as this kid goes, if you go to RIVALS or ESPNU who lists all of the “OFFERS” for prospects–Devin Burns is not even listed as being one of them as of the time I last checked 2 weeks ago. Colby Crawford has an offer he probably will not take–he was looking to go to Auburn anyway–but the fact is Burns has not had an offer for while it appears.

As far as the ALL CAPS person (STS) that is telling us “exactly” what the situation is and how it went down, is ONLY hearing the one side of the story. And even so and this happened exactly the way you say–which it didn’t–wouldn’t you want the Head Coach telling you there was a mistake and no offer or an Assistant Coach?

Bottom line is that there were 100 players there for DAWG Nite and a handful of places left. Sure a few were 2011 hopefuls, but the majority were 2010. Most of those there have offers on the table, with only a few spots open! DO YOU HONESTLY THINK THEY COULD ALL COMMIT TO UGA? Get a life! It is sad for the kid, as I am sure he is a great guy and will help any team he gets with! But all teams put on these camps for prospective players and NONE of them could sign all that attend! If he really had the offer, he should have accepted it! He didn’t and wanted to wait. WHOSE FAULT IS THAT? How can you put that on ANYONE other than the athlete themself?

Regardless, with Martinez running his Mickey Mouse Defense, unfortunately UGA will never get a Championship!

I love how everyone can judge a man that most have never met. I went to high school with Dell and I can tell you first hand that this is a man of integrity. Dell played for a Howard “Buzz” Busby and it seems he learned alot from one of the best coaches in Ala/Ga history. Busby always went out of his way to get his players to the next level. We had years when 11 or 12 would sign. Dell has followed this path with having alot of players move on every year.Im sure Dell has his reasons for taking such a drastic measure. Keep up the good work Dell. Im sure all of this will work out for Burns as he is a great talent. For the record I am a die hard dawg fan.

On the surface it looks like Georgia fumbled the ball with the QB. But for a high school coach to decide where his players can and cannot attend college is wrong! With the coach being an Auburn grad– this one smells– very bad! I am sure a man of Coach Richt’s character will move swiftly to rectify the situation with Carver. Georgia has had some greats from there and there is no reason for it to stop.
