Clearly Garrison Smith had planned for this moment for a long time and he was going to stick to that plan no matter what.
One of the nation’s best defensive linemen according to all the recruiting sites, Smith sat at the front of a crowded back room at Shout restaurant at Colony Square Sunday night. He methodically went through a rehearsed routine of removing t-shirts from Georgia Tech and Florida before revealing his ultimate choice with a red shirt underneath it all, the University of Georgia.
Trouble is, everybody in the room — and apparently everybody in cyberspace — already knew what the Douglass High football star was going to say. And that was well before Douglass coach Kenny Barrow let it slip during his introductory remarks (”The University of Georgia is getting a good one . . .”).

Garrison Smith and me after the not-so-surprising announcement Sunday night at Shout restaurant in Midtown. (From my I-phone)
That’s because Rivals.com on Friday “accidentally” released a video it made of Smith putting on a Georgia cap and telling the world he was committing to the Bulldogs. Apparently it’s common practice for those guys to make videos of prospects committing to multiple schools ahead of time with the agreement they won’t be seen until said prospect makes the actual decision. They make multiple videos just in case a fickle recruit changes his mind, which happens from time to time. In Smith’s case he also made a video committing to the University of Florida. Could you imagine the firestorm if that one had gotten out?
I spoke to an employee of ugasports.com, the Rivals group that covers the Bulldogs, and he told me it was a server error that resulted in the video being posted early. Apparently it reset or something, which changed the date and time the video was supposed to go up and posted it immediately. Talk about a glitch!
In any case, Smith insisted he wasn’t upset. He went about his routine Sunday night just like he had planned for weeks.
“Nah, no reason to get mad,” Smith told me after the ceremony. “It didn’t change anything. They didn’t mean to do it, at least that’s what they said.”
As for the video that leaked, “I made it a long time ago,” Smith said. “I don’t remember exactly when. We made them for both Georgia and Florida. A mistake happened and they released it. But it didn’t hurt my spirits. I was still going to have fun with the whole thing.”
I’d show you a copy of the video that leaked but, as you can imagine, it has been removed from YouTube and is not otherwise available as far as I can tell. As always you can probably go to ugasports.com and see for yourself. It is, of course, a paysite.
I hung out with Smith and his family and friends for a good long while at the swank Midtown eatery Sunday night. I procured a little news and all kinds of cool information and will share it with you in new blog posts throughout the day and the week. So be sure to check back.
In the meantime let me know if you saw the “accidentally released” video and tell me what you think about the practice of making videos committing to multiple schools. I’ll respond to your questions and comments throughout the day.

Somehow I bet we still will hear “45-42″ for years to come, even when we whip their asses seven more times in a row….those idiot nerds just can’t handle winning any better than they can losing.
It is my hope we don’t act like that when we take care of UF this year.

The top of the scale SAT score is no longer 1600. It is now 2400.
According to the SAT board stats, young Mr. Smith’s SAT score of 1280 ranks him in the bottom 15%-17% range of all scores.
I wonder who is more proud: his high-school footbal coach or his high-school principal?

Speak for yourself SomewhereinGA… I plan on rubbing everyone Tech fans nose I can find into every win from this point forward. No more “do unto others” treatment out of me. I have tried to be mindful of how it would feel to be on the receiving end of an obnoxious celebration after the Dawgs had just suffered defeat. However, in my experiences this year, Tech fans are far worse than Florida fans have ever been.
Like I said, the gloves are off now. I plan on making it my mission in life to make Tech fans misserable whenever possible from this point forward. I can’t wait we whip their asses again… I hope they do continue to hang on to the whole “45-42″ thing. It’s actually quite pityful…

W.E…almost every one of the 15 big time recruits that have committed to Florida this year had Georgia offers. Does that mean that Florida has beaten Georgia out for each one of those recruits. Don’t be silly, dude. Almost every big time recruit has a qualifying offer from Meyer and the University of Florida. It is not a win over another school type of thing with most of these kids. Like Garrison, he had been a bulldog for a long time. Now, as I said on another blog, if Richt beats Meyer for the RB, Brown, then that would be a “win” over the Gators beacause Meyer is personally involved in his recruitment. You win over another school on the final day of recruiting in February…like the Vol coach when he stole the WR from Florida on the last day. That is also a win. Otherwise, most of these kids who have already committed were going to Florida or Georgia from the beginning. Not a win over another school.

Why do these recruiting sites post these kids SAT scores? That should not be done. That information should only be availiable to the recruit, the school he intends to attend, and his family. It should not be a public record for us to talk about on public blogs. And what do formal assessments tell you about a kid’s willingness to work hard and improve anyway, both academically and socially? He might not be good at math, but he might be a great writer or painter. Or chief. I am certain he is smart enough and has enough character to get through the University of Georgia. Now, if he was trying to get into Harvard Law School…..

Tampa gator – It looks like Meyer is going to lose on Brown. This is not just wishful thinking. The kid lives half an hour from athens. He already said that he wants to play with one of his best friends Ken Malcome (Georgia Commit). Also claims that they will be the best 1-2 punch in college football but we will have to see. When Malcome committed to UGA Brown admitted he almost made his recruiting decision but decided to wait a little longer. Lastly, Malcome has hinted in an interview that “another RB” will be signing this year with him, implying Brown will sign with UGA. Oh, one more thing. Brown has said time and time again that he wants to play in a pro style offense too. Anyways, he is supposed to make his decision at the beginning of August. We will just have to see what happens.

I agree with Tampa Gator (the day is getting worse) on one point and almost two. 1) They should not make public the kids SAT scores or grades. Pretty classless on the legislature etc. not to pass a law saying this in not allowed and it is pretty classless on any reporter writing about someones grades or SAT scores specifically. Especially when they are still minors and have not completed High School. 2) UF has beaten UGA out for everyone of its commits, just as UGA has beaten UF out of all of its commits. There are times when you have really big steals, and last minute changes. It would have been a coup if Tebow had gone to Bama. I digress. All in all, when the visits are done, a player has a choice, and he makes it, either UGA or UF or any other school of their choice.

sswimfordawg, you might be right about Brown. I think he is leaning towards Georgia myself because the Gators have seemed to step up their recruiting for some other nationally known RBs recently, including a kid out of California. But Brown loved the Gators offense, his visit to Gainesville, and how he would fit into the role in the Gators offense. He might also do well at Georgia, but his skill sets are frankly more suited for the Gators style of offense than a pro style of offense that Georgia runs. Georgia is also a lot deeper on the depth chart at RB than Florida. Florida currently only has 2 solid type RBs in Moody and Rainey now that Demps has moved to Harvin’s position. But that said, I think his loyalty will be to his friend and to staying in Georgia. But Florida will still land one or two big time RBs in this class even if Brown isn’t one of them.

This guy was never seriously considering UF and he wasn’t on their radar either. Probably the same with GT. The T-shirt thing was a big dog and pony show. That’s really cheesy, what a douche.
UF already has several commits from guys who were offered by UGA. UF just doesn’t feel the need to do PR stunts.
And UF might lose out on Mack Brown because Richt is telling this kid, among others, that Meyer is going to Notre Dame. Negative recruiting is one thing, but lying and spreading false rumors is another.
Keep it classy Georgia.

Warhorse, don’t think you’re totally accurate. Stroud’s team did beat UF in 1997 by 20. Marcus was a first round pick in the NFL draft leading to a pretty good career.
I think things worked out pretty well for him after his selection to go go UGA.
Real mature post there…you may want to be more like TampaGator who actually makes pretty good posts.
Tampa, I agree with you. UF, just like UGA, is going to get good players. Both schools are in talent rich states with all the resources to be successful. Both also have the capability to go outside the state and pull in big time players. I don’t see UF shaking when they miss out on someone because they can go find another player easily.

**Copyright violation:** Nobody is “slamming” on anybody here. As the new recruiting blogger for the AJC, I decided to go check out the commitment announcement of Garrison Smith Sunday night. Come to find out there was a premature release of a video of him making that announcement two days before. Certainly you can see how that would be interesting and newsworthy to a broad audience. I found it enlightening on two fronts: (1) That it’s common practice for these recruiting publications to tape multiple “commitments” ahead of time and publish them at an agreed time; (2) that occasionally these things don’t go as planned. I thought it was pretty funny and particularly refreshing that the kid wasn’t upset about it. . . . And if you’ll go back and read, I didn’t write that the ceremony had been planned a long time. I was referring to the fact that the kid had planned to pull off multiple t-shirts and make fake commitments as part of his presentation ahead of time. He didn’t waver even after rivals — and his coach — scooped him on his own announcement. . . .
**Left to right:** No, that was not at all any kind of “payback.” Today is the first time I’ve ever posted a recruiting blog, so I have no history with any of these recruiting news sites. And just so you know, it is not against copyright law when you attribute something to another publication. So if Rivals or Scout or some other such outlet reports that somebody has committed to Acme University, we will report that — giving them due attribution and a link of course — and then find out what we can about it thereafter. No different than anything they do on radio or TV everyday. . . .
**TampaGator and others, RE: SATs:** Interesting points made about the SAT scores. I agree with those of you that believe prospects’ academic situations ought to be kept out of public purview. In fact, when I was college sports editor here several years ago, my policy was for my reporters stay out of a prospect’s academic eligibility until time for freshmen to report in August. Then, I figured, if a guy didn’t show up his academic status was fair game. These guys have enough pressure on them to qualify without every recruitnik in the South asking every day if he obtained a qualifying score on his third attempt. The truth is, recruits are protected by a federal law known as “FERPA” from having to disclose their academic status. They simply don’t have to answer when somebody asks whether or not they’re qualified. But rarely is that case. And with all the attention on recruiting these days, there’s probably no putting the genie back in the bottle now. . . .
**Finally,** eventually I am going to be providing you guys with at least three new posts a day here on the AJC College Recruiting Blog. For now I’m having to go to a lot of meetings and talk to a lot of coaches, etc., to get myself acclimated and wired-in in this new position. So it may take a few days or a week before I’m up to three a day. In the meantime, you can always be sure that I’ll respond to your questions and comments throughout the day. On that note, I want this to be an interactive space so let me know some of the things you’d like to see covered and prospects you’d like to see profiled. I’ll respond to the best suggestions. C-ya!

Chip it will be a pleasure to have a true journalist covering recruiting. Unlike the slimy people at rivals and websites such as their ilk. They just love the drama of the multiple hats and shirts and such. It is my view that the more kids you have on a team that want to play that “game”, the more likely you’ve got recruiting violations going on. And believe me they still go on. The Dawg fans think they are at a disadvantage because “they” recruit by the rules to the letter of the law and everyone else in the SEC cheats and Tech lies. It looks like the dawg recruiting class for the coming year is shaping up no different than the last 10 years, yes even Pre-Richt classes were rated highly. The question was and still is, when is Richt gonna coach up all this talent and win a crystal football? I’m not a Dawg fan, but with the short fuse most of them have I predict that the good christian man cover he’s had so far is gonna start wearing a little thin if he doesn’t cash in on all these highly paid recruits.

You will notice that UF is one spot higher then UGA and has the least number of committments in the top 10. That means we will be even higher when we are finished. As long as you are in the top 20 it means you are getting good recruits. Distinguishing between the top classes is like deciding if the blonde or brunette is hotter! It really doesn’t matter and is only an opinion. Time to worry is when you are outside of these lists. Besides, how could a team with the number 1 and 12 picks in the NFL Draft get hammered by 39 points? Enjoy your off season but back away from the hard stuff if you think UGA is ahead of UF in recruiting. You are only showing your delusional side.

It’s true that both UGA and UF attract good recruits. Add Bama and LSU to that list. Nobody really “wins”, unless you’re dumb enough to think that the Rivals/Scout rankings in the top 10-15 are distinguishable. I guess fans have to get worked up about something this time of year.
Regardless, we gotta coach ‘em up.
Now GO DAWGS!

Voice of Reason, National Championship trophies. It’s been a long time, but I’m certain your remember them. 1980? As great as you pups talk up your team….you’d think ya’ll would have added at LEAST one by now. Bill Lewis, congrats on your half of our National Championship! How’s Promise Keepers going?

CHIP…thanks for the response about SATs. If the kid gives the data, then shame on him, I guess. Also, I hope you realize (unlike a lot of these “this is a Georgia blog site” nuts out there) that fans of a lot of SEC teams read the stories about recruiting on the AJC site. It would be interesting, and informative, if you covered the entire SEC with your recruiting stories. Yes, the majority of stories should be on Georgia and Tech, but a more balanced “SEC” recruiting story or evaluation would be nice once in a while, too. Too many of these Georgia fans think that the Georgia coaches are the only ones out there recruiting highly rated players. Please don’t always play into their false illusions. Thanks. Tampa Gator.

I watched Tech play in the Gator Bowl in 1990. They demolished the team they played (I believe it was a decent Nebraska team that was somehow favored over Tech in the game). That team would have creamed Colorado or any other team in the country at that time. They were loaded with talent and were on a role. Their QB, Jones was his name I believe, was unbelieveable. And they were extremely well-coached. I was stunned when the AP gave Colorado half the title, as were most informed people at the time. I believe that injustice was one of the factors leading to what system we have now. Although not perfect, the BCS system is a lot better than what existed back then. Tech, with all its talent, played in the Gator Bowl, when they should have been playing Colorado in the Orange Bowl. If Tech had played the Buffs, they would have killed Colorado. Georgia fans, give Tech its deserve in this case. They were the best team in America that year, no doubt.

MACRO, what big game trophy does tech have? Last I checked its been 19 years since Tech won a NC. Seriously? 19? Might as well be 29. Both Tech’s latest NC and UGA’s latest NC are insignificant now. So now lets look at the recent conference championship trophies tech has vs. UGA.
Past 5 years: GT – 0, UGA – 1
Past 10 years: GT – 1, UGA – 2
Past 15 years: GT – 1, UGA – 2
So, no you haven’t brought in more big game trophies, now have you?
Are there any other trophies I’m forgetting?
Tech is insignificant, even in their own POS conference. 10 years since they have won their own conference. Come talk to me when when you win your side of the conference then we’ll talk about national championships.

You GA Fans get on my nerves with this crap about getting whipped every year. Yes, you won 7 straight, a couple thanks to the refs. What about before that… We had 3 straight…and it went back and forth between the 2 schools. Don’t forget…GT also have a 7 game winning streak over GA… So, stop all this crap and come to play in November.

Thats right. Blame it on the reffs. See thats the thing GT man. UGA comes to play every year. Its only till last year that tech decided to come play in November. Will yall show up this year? I hope so because UGA isn’t going to play their worst defensive game of the year against the bugs next year.

GTMan, Tech has an 8 game winning streak against uga. sswinfordawg, I agree with you about uga showing up to play every year…ALWAYS frustrated me to see Tech play a heartless effort! This past season, it was refreshing to see the Yellow Jackets play with passion! Win or lose (preferrably, win), I can handle losing some games, but to do so with no passion KILLS me! Tech had better play phenominal football this coming season….uga will not be taking the Turkey Bowl lightly and have some things to prove! SHOULD be a great game!

you guys are all just pathetic. the real fact is that UGA is a factory for NFl top notch players. Uf is a factory for guys that can’t produce on Sundays. Jean shorts aside, while Florida has clearly has success under the Tebow/Meyer marriage, oops, I mean regime… they will never have long term success under UMs tyrannical and slightly homosexual ways…. The fact is kid want to earn a living on Sunday – Stafford – $80MM vs. Tebow $30K… GATORS WEAR JEAN SHORTS!!!

umm, who cares about sundays and how much money the players make after college football? what matters is that we own you on Saturdays in Jax. Tebow may never play a down in the NFL,but he will be in your nightmares for years. Stafford, not so much. Noshow, didn’t impress me. Heck, the ACC puts more players in the NFL than the SEC, but what happens on Saturdays???

troy dont ever blog on here again, are u special ed? Any real fan that follows recruiting would know that was last year’s final standings in recruiting. Look at the names of the recruits and how many number of recruits the teams have. Sheppard are who ever was LSU last year, do u really think North Carolina really has twenty sumthing recruits already? Lol wat a dumbass

actually pounder, butch davis of UNC is one of the best recruiters out there, so it would not surprise me if had a full class of 25 already. Like many sec teams (uga included) they *sign* more than 25 and rely on non-qualifiers, forced transfers, and *medical* reasons for them to be able to fit the class in. Why is it that uga drops signifcantly when scout and rivals updates the rankings in the fall?

also, the recruiting services know who their audience is. When a player commits to a team with a lot of customers, his star ranking goes up. if the same player commits to a duke or vandy, it goes down.

Sundays divide the boys from men. If Tebow needs to stay back in JV, I mean college… to feel good that is great. I mean, we all know the HS stud – still going to prom – when he was 24. UGA Alums – like to see their guys go on to the big leagues… where jaded SEC refs can’t call back AJ Greene receptions to give Tebow and his lisp a chance to win…. GO DAWGS – and Garrison Smith’s real team!

Hey Ga on my mind…It’s obvious you’re a Tech fan based on your knowledge. Tech did not beat Nebraska in the Gator Bowl for their SHARED 1990 Natl. Championship. They played in the Citrus Bowl in Orlando and I know because I was at the game. “They were loaded with talent and were on a ROLE”…LMFAO All this talent you speak of led to 2 players being drafted into the NFL. They had one 7th rounder and a 10th rounder. HUUUUGE talent. If you’re gonna come on a blog about a UGA recruit and spout off about how we should give GT its “deserve” at least get your facts straight. All you’re doing is making a fool of yourself. And YES, there is/was plenty of doubt as to the strength of GT’s team that year. They tied UNC who ended the season with a 6-4-1 record. And as far as your final comment that “they were the best team in America, No doubt”…Colorado took the AP poll while GT took the UPI poll by one vote, 847 to 846. One freakin vote!!! So apparently there was plenty of doubt. Enjoy 45-42 while you can cause it will be short lived. Congratulations Garrison. You’ll love Athens and Go Dawgs.
