Garrison Smith set to pick between Dogs and Gators

Garrison Smith, a heralded football recruit from Douglass High School, will announce his college choice at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Shout restaurant inside Colony Square in Midtown.

Smith, a 6-4, 250-pound defensive tackle who holds more than 50 scholarship offers, said that all schools on his list are under consideration.

UGASports.com, a Web site affiliated with the Rivals network, is reporting that Smith told them he has narrowed his college choice to Georgia or Florida.

Smith, who dabbles in more than football, is ranked No. 2 in the nation at his position, 44th overall by Rivals.

tenn dawg, I also agree. He will be very appreciated in this state long after his playing days are over. Hometown heros are the bomb. Plus UGA is about to start a long sting of great football. If it were me, I would like to be part of that in my native state.

Garrison as a Douglass graduate my unsolicited advise is to go wherever benefits you the most. You and your older brother are quality young men and it would be a pleasure to watch you follow in your brother’s footsteps and play in state. God Bless you son.

Great article about the checkers with the neighbor. Garrison, your hard works as earned you the opportunity to choose between two great football schools and academic schools. Go where your heart leads you. As for the depth chart. Florida will lose the majority of its front line next year to the draft (first rounders i might add), but that is not garuntee of playing time. Just like your current scholarship offers, that has to be earned. I’m sure you will be able to do that.

First I believe he is going to Georgia, however I dont know if y’all agree with my thoughts, I think Georgia is changing their defensive philosophy they are looking for lighter, faster and athletic DTs over fluffy ones, so how do you explain Deangelo Tyson, Abry Jones and Garrison smith and none weigh more than 270lb.

Great pick up for UGA. However, I am not sure how much UF was ever in the race for Garrison. Of course, Carvell has a long history of inserting UF into stories where they really do not belong. Carvell is the worst.

Garrison, pick the DAWGS like another Garrison back in the early 90s and we will also see you in the NFL as an All Pro one day. Coach Mark Richt will be a wonderful father figure for you just like he is for all of his players. Good luck to you and may God bless you and your career.

Kid was going to bama until over signing kids became a big problem at bama . This week bama lost a senior lb because Saban it telling player to get loss . Saban still has to get rid of 7 more player to make room for the signing class. Their is talk that some parent want to take Saban to court because they were told this would not happen . Saban has a history of this and some parents are talking class action suit . Things are heating up in my old home state .

Gator Nation, nice post, but where do you get your depth chart information from about the Gators? Florida does not lose the majority of its defensive line next year and they specifically don’t lose the majority of the defensive tackles. As for defensive tackles Marsh is a Jr., Sanders is a Jr., Howard in a Soph., Hunter is a RSfr, and Okine is a RSfr. No seniors at the DT position that will make a significant contribution this year, Gator Nation. There are some lower DT backups like Epps and Anwine (often injured) that are seniors. And there are some others the are not seniors and are deeper on the chart. So I am not sure where you got your comment about the Gators losing the majority of their DT. Not true. But the Gators sure could use this kid in the future. But, only 250lbs. He would need to put on about 50 more pounds to play inside in the SEC. Is he more of a DE? Well, the Gators only lose one Senior, Cunningham, at DE. Of course, Dunlap (Jr.) will proably turn pro and be a #1 pick. But the Gators still have 4 really good, young DEs, too. Come on to Gainesville, kid, and compete with all the young talent the Gators have on the DL. Be a champion, and play for national and SEC titles in Gainesville. Don’t be a want to be champion and play in Athens.

No recruiting battle here. He will go to Athens. I am sure he was prompted to narrow is choice down to Georgia and Florida so Richt could look good again winning a recruiting battle against Meyer. The Gators already have several young DL including Hunter, Okine, Brown and the starters are returning next year, too. They also have a top commitment at DT already and several other top DL kids out of Florida and elsewhere who are going to end up in Gainesville. So I think this kid is already going to Georgia and Richt just wants to look good “beating out” the Gators again in recruiting because he knows he can’t beat them on the green grass and sand in Jacksonville. And, remember kid, the players who go to Gainesville and play on the DL under Meyer usually end up being drafted and playing in the NFL. And, p.s., the Gators win SEC and National Championships. When, exactly, did Georgia last win their national championship?

Maybe you sould consider majoring in Public Relations and learn even better how to stretch the truth in advertising. Best thing about your choice is you can now can get your butt kicked in Jacksonville almost every year by the Gators. Hope you enjoy the butt whoopin.

Wow! This kid seems to have a great personality and attitude. If he comes to Georgia… Great. If he goes to Florida, I will root for him to do well.. regardless of what team Florida is playing. I read the article about him playing checkers with his neighbor.. Hellva good story. It seems that this kid is grounded.

I well say this, I could be wrong, but my gut tells me that because of his closeness to his neighbor, he will be registering in Athens. By the way, I am one of the best checker players also. Any questions!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Gators are also having an outstanding recruiting year so far and they will end up with the best recruiting class in the nation by the time it is all over. A lot of big-time players are leaning to the Gators. And remember, the Gators have offensive and defensive coaches that coach up their recruits. We don’t have Richt and Wille. We have Urban and Strong. I will take my chances with Urban and Strong every time.

I am shocked by your comments. You always have great posts, but to try to bash a kid because he didn’t chose FL is “just not right”. You guys are great and will continue to be one of the best teams in the SEC and NCAA, but you can’t get all of the good recruits. I think you outlined is best in your post as to why Garrison should not sign with FL. Hey, we got this one and I am sure you all are getting all the recruits that you want and can handle. So man up and Go Dawgs and GO SEC!

I read he had already committed to UGA several days ago, so why the “dawg” and pony show??? The Gators have already moved on and have several other high profile targets. Would have liked to have seen him in G’Ville but he was Georgia from the get go. I think these players just like to be loved on by all these different schools. I wasn’t bashing or didn’t mean to bash the kid. He is a top notch person from everything I have read. But I seriously don’t think this kid was seriously considering going to Gainesville. Even reading the article makes you see that. He had too much local to go to Gainesville to play. It was more between Georgia and Bama than Georgia and Florida, that is what I am saying, and this show was good P.R. for Richt. You bet it was. And for all you Dawg fans going overboard about the end of the Gators, check this out. Commitments so far per Rivals. Florida, 15 commitments so far – one 5-star, ten 4-stars, and four 3-stars. Georgia, 16 commitments so far: one 5-star (this kid), five 4-stars, and ten 3-stars. Based on the numbers and stars so far, the Gators are still winning the recruiting battle for this year. That is, Georgia is still in 2nd place in the recruiting battle just like the battle on the football field. And, of course, we still have the better coaches to coach these kids up. Don’t forget that. Strong vs. Willie. Meyer vs. Richt on game day. No brainer which coaches I go with every time. One coaching group wins SEC and National titles. The other coaching group wins 2nd place in the SEC East. Sounds like you are still in second place in the recruiting battle this year too, even with this kids commitment. By the way, Rivals did not have stars for all players, so I gave 3 stars to every commitment for both Florida and Georgia that did not have stars by their names. Neither Georgia or Florida would be recruiting 2 star players. And you need to know that the Gators are recruiting nationally now, and they are in the running big time for some really big time national recruits which will come slowly but many will be Gators in the end. Count on the Gators being at the top or near the top in recruiting when this year ends. Also, the Gator era will not end with Tebow. You Dawg fans don’t want to believe it, but John Brandley is a special, special QB. You will see it some this year when he plays a series or two every game. You will see it big time in the following 2 years when he will compete or run away with the Heisman, too. He is that good. And, by the way, the Gators are still loaded with very good, and very young talent. They are not going away. They are going away only in your dreams and wishes.

I find it interesting that he has already committed to Ga and then all the sudden it’s this “big announcement” between UGA and UF that he’s gonna make Sunday eve…just in time for the Monday morning papers to headline “Top prospect Garrison Smith picks Georgia over Florida!” Sounds orchestrated to me by someone (Georgia coaching staff?)for maximum effect, but everyone who follows recruiting already knows he probably made this decision long ago. But I guess it will excite the casual Ga fan and they’ll be sizing their championship rings.

[...] Garrison Smith set to pick between UGA and UF Even though the AJC article says that all the schools that have offered Smith are still under consideration it has been down to UGA and UF for a while now. Bama is no longer being considered by him. He is no longer listed as a Bama prospect on the Tide Fans prospect list. It certainly appears from all the reports that Smith will choose UGA. UGA has a really good class of commits so far. In comparison to Bama’s class, believe it or not they will still not have a Rivals.com 5-star even if Smith commits to them. Bama would also have 1 more Rivals.com 4-star commit in their class. Bama has two Scout.com 5-stars commits, Phillip Sims and Demarcus Milliner. If Smith commits to UGA they will also have two 5-stars, Garrison Smith and Alec Ogletree. Garrison Smith set to pick between Dogs and Gators | AJC College Sports Recruiting [...]
