South Carolina DE commits to Dogs

By DARRYL MAXIE / dmaxie@ajc.com

We will see if Johnavon Fulton was just speaking out of youthful exuberance, or if he meant what he said.

Only days ago, Fulton — one of the top defensive backs in the country — told Eric Guimaraes of Palmetto Sports that he wanted to go to the same school as defensive end teammate Dexter Morant. If Morant maintains the commitment he just made to Georgia this week, becoming the 15th member of the Class of 2010 to pledge allegiance, things could get interesting in the Bulldogs’ secondary.

“Me and Dexter are really focused on going to the same school,” he told Guimaraes. “We’re trying to make that happen.”

He qualified the comment, however.

“If it doesn’t,” he said, “we understand that we have to do what is best.”

It is good to see UGA addressing the areas of least depth in this recruiting class. We have had to convert LBs and DTs to end to accomodate injuries. This guy is going to pack on 30 to 40 pounds easily and will be a damned monster. Welcome, Dexter!

UGA has always gotten 4 and 5 star athletes. However, in having one of the best quarterbacks, one of the best running backs, and one of the best receivers this past year, did the team play up to its potential? The question remains: do the players continue to develop after arriving on campus or do they just rely on their natural abilities? Who’s in charge – the coaching staff or the athletes? Does the coaching staff hold the players accountable for their development on and off the field?

dkg – are you saying UGA hasn’t been successful with the athletes? I strongly hope you reposition yourself if so…

UGA has 74 wins since 02 and two SEC rings….whats the prob?

some other team only has 53

dkg, the team team did not play to potential but over 20 injuries and a 10 win season in the SEC isn’t bad.

I just reviewed the list of Tech commitments. Georgia only offered two of them. The rest Tech wrestled away from powerhouse programs like Western Michigan,Ohio,USF,East Carolina and South Alabama.I’m sure they are all good guys…just not big time football material.I hope they enjoy their college careers playing in front of 35,000 people at home games. Also, they will need to obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon so they won’t have any trouble walking on campus while changing classes.

Since UGA either has the #1 or #2 most players in the NFL(not sure of with the recent draft), you are saying the NFL scouts are just idiots. I guess your right there not being developed at UGA. What a stupid comment.

DKG–and all you you other sideline coaches,
I don’t mean to be rude, but I do wonder why some of you have not been hired by SEC schools to help coach. I mean, you are so quick to criticize Mark Richt and the other coaches because their 4 and 5 star players didn’t reach their “potential”. How do you know all this? Where have you had your coaching experience? Again, I don’t want to be confrontational–but it reminds me of the “coaches” who complain that Bobby Cox left a pitcher in too long. I think he and Mark Richt have proven that they are pretty good coaches. Let them coach…until they prove they can’t. Then leave those decisions to their bosses.

I like how this is spun as a negative for UGA.

Why not just report the commit of Morant as its own entity. Then you could do another entry about Fulton. Yes, it appears that UGA is full in the secondary, but there is no need for the writer of this blog to try and spin Morant’s commit as anything but great for UGA.

Rogeriter… Amen brada! Thanks for putting those doubters in their place. Coaching is a tough b’n'e’…. these doubters wouldn’t last a season if they were in Mark Richt’s shoes. Richt is the best coach since Dooley. We wouldn’t be in a situation we are right now if weren’t for Richt. He has done a tremendous job since he has been here. I would not want another coach in Athens. We know he’s glass guy and a great person.

Good choice Maxie!

dkg,
Yeah, why couldn’t UGA win a national title with 3 of the best skill players in the country?!? After all, the rest of the team doesn’t matter! If you’ve got a 5-star QB, you don’t need healthy defensive ends! If you’ve got Moreno carrying the ball, you don’t need defensive backs who can cover. Hell, if the coaches were any good, our true-freshmen offensive line shouldn’t even have to get on the field because Stafford and 5-star AJ Green should be able to score points on every drive without the help of any teammates.
