Malcome commits to Georgia

By DARRYL MAXIE / dmaxie@ajc.com

Both rivals.com and scout.com are reporting that Southwest DeKalb running back Kendrun Malcome committed to Georgia today, choosing the Bulldogs over his other finalist — Florida.

Early attempts to contact Malcome were unsuccessful. (Update: A later attempt has succeeded.) You can read what he had to tell rivals and scout (both are pay sites; subscriptions are required).

The last time Malcome spoke to the AJC, he said one of the reasons Georgia made his favorites was because it was a good school with a history of good running backs and that he “met Mark Richt and he’s real nice.”

GT fans are the most pathetic fan base in all of America. They consistently hate UGA more than they love their own team. I bet you feel quite proud of yourself insulting a kid for wanting to go to college and play football. Posting this kid’s SAT score, whether it’s acurate or not, is NONE of your damn business regardless of how jealous you are of UGA’s success. Also, for the life of me, I cant understand how you think you benefit from constantly insulting your own states’ flagship university. I dont expect you to be a UGA fan or anything but arent you, in a lot of ways, insulting your own fellow Georgians? Does that make you feel better about yourself to do that?

Portland, Tom received his information straight from Ken’s profile on Scout.com. Admitting a kid with an 810 SAT, seriously? I guess he will immediately be placed in to the tough Coaching of Basketball course.

Truth, I highly doubt that Reggie Ball’s GPA and SAT scores could be any lower than Malcome’s. It is tough to get much lower than an 810, and Tech rarely admits any athlete that does not meet the academic standard for all other incoming students.

UGA fans just refuse to accept the fact that they are a second rate university and will never match up with The Institute when it comes to academics. It also must be a tough pill to swallow that UGA lost to their in-state rival with such below level student athletes.

That’s funny I didnt think they were admitted until after high school. This kid is a junior (class fo 2010)…. and, as the article states he has already taken the SAT again and awaiting the scores. Most likely becasue he knows he has to get his scores up to qualify. Do you have a problem with someone trying to improve their scores? Is there something wrong with that? Buzz, the truth is that the student-athletes Tech brings in for football and basketball are generally far below the academic level of the general student body, but they all are also required to meet admission requirements that are higher than the NCAA minimums (which UGA uses).

If you want a good example in the difference, take a look back at all the excitement created a couple of months back when Coach Mark Richt was wanting to attend the HS graduation of a recent Dawg signee, becuase he had a shot at being named valedictorian. It was such an outlier in relation to the type of student-athletes he has used to bringing in, he wanted to really play it up.

As it turned out, the young man (an excellent student-athlete and role model, btw) did not get selected as valedictorian, and the NCAA nazis wouldn’t grant the waiver for Richt to attend. But, the young man’s accomplishments can be a terrific……Bulldog…..Point of Pride.

Meanwhile, two of the Tech players (d-linemen, no less) recently selcted in the NFL draft are former HS valedictorians. Ho-hum.

“Tech rarely admits any athlete that does not meet the academic standard for all other incoming students.” All students, both athletes and non-athletes have a minimum standard that must be met to be enrolled at any school. Tech’s standards are no different than UGA’s and all athletes meet these or they must go the JUCO route. Don’t try and make it sound like all GT athleteshave as high scores as regular students who are accepted. As long as an athletes reaches these minimums at ANY school, they are enrolled. Try getting into Tech with the same scores as most of the football players and see how much success you have. Not going to happen. Take your goggles off.

Key word being “former”. If they were valedictorians this year as recruits then I’m sure it would be mentioned. It’s not like every time any valedictorian is mentioned then we must also include Tech’s as well. Right? See that’s the difference…some folks would say “nice job” to the kid and commend UGA for seeking such a student. But not you…you automatically think “what about us?” and immdiately refer to two of your athlete’s accomplishments from 4-5 years ago. See the difference. One is a genuine care about the type of students our schools recruit, and the other is just jealousy that your team isnt being discussed. That’s pretty typical on these blogs though.

UGA had the highest APR rate than any other football team in the country this past year. APR – it measures the eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team. It also serves as a predictor of graduation success.

**The Bulldog football team’s 976 APR score tied with Penn State for the best score among all of the nation’s top 25 teams as ranked in the final polls.

You guys spout the company line as if you are the ignorant masses following Jim Jones…..what flavor is that GT Kool-Aid? I doubt any of you ever set foot in a classroom on the GT campus, unless you are on the janitorial staff.

Deal in facts boys, facts. According to Stanford Univ, Georgia’s incoming football players GPA’s and SAT, or ACT in some cases, scores have been higher than GT’s incoming class in 4 of the last 7 years. Not by much, minimal difference in the GPA’s about 10 pts on the SAT’s. Evidently you missed the APR reports released recently where Georgia was a national leader and GT lost scholarships. You boys miss that report? Furthermore, when you boys spout your academic superiority BS, let’s keep in mind that GT linebacker Anthony Barnes was admitted to GT and enrolled in classes BEFORE GT rec’d clearance from the NCAA;Barnes was later declared ineligible for admission by the NCAA, returned to Cartersville to take classes and some 18 mos later was able to enroll. Then we have the curious case of Lewis Clinch, basketball player. Clinch was academically ineligible for one entire season at GT and part of another before mysteriously making the Dean’s List. Hmmm, wonder how that happened? Was it that he needed a 3.0 to satisfy satisfactory progress requirments and GPA standards? Have you boys forgotten your “probation” handed out by the NCAA for using ineligible players? That academic titan over on North Ave couldn’t find anyone who knew how to read and understand the eligibility standards put forth by the NCAA. Exactly how is it you boys claim academic superiority yet nobody over at GT how enough sense to know who was and who wasn’t academically eligible? As I recall, the most recent 3 years of graduation rates Georgia’s were better slightly for football and significantly better in basketball. Didn’t GT finish only ahead of Va Tech in football grad rates and behind FSU? The smugness and claims of academic excellence simply won’t hold up.

By the way boys, what is Sammy Drummer doing nowadays? What about Tyrone Sorrells who flunked out of Developmental Studies at Georgia, transferred to GT where he graduated? Did Tyrone design the parking deck that collapsed, or the walkway at the Botanical Gardens? Maybe he worked on the exit ramp from I-75 to Howell Mill Rd. Did REggie Ball ever figure out how to count to 4?

Athletes in football and basketball are admitted at both GT and Georgia who come nowhere near meeting the entrance requirements used for admitting freshmen who are non-athletes. Both schools admit according to NCAA eligibility standards. GT has admitted athletes in the past who scored in the 860+ range on the SAT, as has UGa, so long as their GPA’s core met the NCAA sliding scale. You are GT not Stanford, Duke or Vanderbilt, you are a public Univ that makes exceptions for exceptional athletes, always have and always will, just as is done at The Univ of Georgia.

Deal in facts, your insults only tend to identify your ignorance.

I don’t know why ignorant fans like to make assumptions so much, but the fact is the UGA consistently produces more Rhodes Scholars, doctors, and lawyers than GT does. UGA has tons prominent and distinguished faculty members as well as world class research facilities for both undergrads and graduate students alike. The average SAT score for admitted undergrads is slightly lower than Techs but hey, the state of Georgia has needs (see: Agriculture majors) that a specialty school like Tech could not fill and has to admit students interested in these fields. And besides, most of the states top students tend to end up in UGA’s honors program where the average SAT is about 100 points greater than Techs. Quit hating on your flagship institution.

Malcome is excited to be a Bulldog and also glad the process is over. But while he is planning on focusing on school and football, Malcome also let UGASports know he is not done with recruiting entirely.

“I’m trying to get my cousin (T.J. Stripling ) to come with me. He is still trying to decide between Georgia and Florida. Georgia is one of the best schools so it is real hard for him to decide which one to go to. Both are good schools. I am still trying to get him,” added Malcome.

Another player Malcome wants to joins him is actually a long time football rival. What makes it even more interesting is the fact that they both play the same position.

“Mack Brown and me have both played running back since we were four years old. We have been competing ever since, and I am going to try to get him to come too,” said the Decatur native.

JMar, I may be wrong, but I think we have a few more scholarships with Knowshon, Stafford and Allen turning pro. Also, one or two from last year were not admitted. I think we have 22 for this year. Can someone else confirm how many scholarships we have left?

I used to hold some respect for GT, but you GT bloggers have shattered that. You should be ashamed for ripping on a 17 year old kid and his SAT scores. Rip on the adults but leave the kids alone. Shame on you.

Lil Yodi you are exactly right. People who get on these blogs to insult a kid who wants to go to college and play football are pathetic. They dont know any of these kids or anything about them or their lives. Their insults are a direct reflection of how they feel about themselves and nothing more.

True Dog, don’t put to much faith in Elams comments about coaching changes. I am sure there are coaches that are inflaming the idea that Coach Meyer and others may be leaving. I’ll just say, why would he leave? He will not get paid more by anyone else (except NFL) and he has a great program in UF. I hate the fact that opposing coaches inflame such rumors as it only makes kids question a huge decision in their life only for their benefit. If Elam thinks UF is the best place for him, then he needs to go there. If it is UGA then welcome aboard. I wish him the best of luck and hope he becomes a dawg, but in the end he needs to make a decision based on the facts he has and one that is in his best interest.
On the topic at hand welcome to dawg nation Kendrum!

Rouser…Urban hasn’t been at Florida long enough to have many RBs go even have a chance to go to the NFL even though Deshawn Wynn from the ‘06 NC team is playing for Green Bay. (Billy Lasko from that same team is with the Panthers). And since Wynn was the only “highly touted” back that has actually graduated under Meyer (although Meyer did not recruit him), I’d say, let’s give it a couple more years before we pass any judgement. And that gimmick offense??? Well there are plenty of players in the NFL that played under some kind of “spread” offense playing in the league right now. I have also read that many NFL teams are starting to use elements of the spread/hybrid offense and there will be more to come. Like I’ve always said, if you’re a good enough player at ANY school, at ANY level, under ANY system, the league will find you!

RFP, you’re right about the scholarships…I’m not exactly sure about the number, but Knox is gone and so is Walter Hill and Tony Wilson, so that’s a couple more right there. I think we’ll have in the low 20’s after its all said and done.

BTW I’m not too worried about Matt Elam. Would I rather not see him taking trips? Of course, but you can’t blame a kid for taking advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity and it’s all free! Hopefully he recruits a few players to Florida while he’s visiting! We’ve certainly have had some players visit UF and do that, right Julio Jones???

Macoe is excellent pick-up I know alot of dawg fans feel that Mack Brown and Vogler would be ideal for offensive recruitment and I do agree but, personally, I would like to see a couple of more defensive players for example; that Linebacker Luc from Treasure Coast and also Garrison Smith those would be 2 big additions to the defense. I`ve also read in various places that JUCO saftey Jakar Hamilton will decide soon between UGA and Bama. C’mon dawgs, keep`em rollin in. 67 days til kick off and only 7 months left to hear about Tebow in college GO DAWGS!!!

every last one of you need to get a life. blogs have turned out to be a terrible thing. this kid is probably excited to have his name turn up in a news outlet, and you people talk about this kid like this? shame on every last one of you.

who cares if you go to a prestigous university? go where you want to go. that’s all that matters. I’m a structural engineer…a PE and SE, licensed in TN, GA & AL. I didn’t go to Tech. You know what? It doesn’t make a damn bit of difference. Get over yourselves. Never in my life have I seen such an elitest attitude…no, actually I have…from the DNC…congrats on that similarity

Jacket Attack – Have you ever heard of Emory University? It’s rated well above GTU. You also might want to check the average incoming GPAs of Tech and UGA freshmen. The general student population is fairly close there.

If you’ve got any sense you know that if you want to attend a public in-state school and major in engineering or international affairs, you go to Tech. If you want to major in management, Tech is one of several good choices (including UGA). Otherwise, you’re going somewhere else if you want the best public education you can get in GA. (UGA’s international affairs program is pretty good too though.)
To say that academics are better at Tech than UGA is like saying blondes are than brunettes. Nevermind, true Tech alums won’t even understand that analogy.

Reggie Ball’s SAT score was 815, his biggest problem was he couldn’t count to 4.

PS – Tech’s academic standards have taken a serious blow over the last several years with all the scandals and criminals you have in your program. Tech is a pathetic place to go to school. Is there anyone at that school that can speak English or isn’t a member of AQ?

Hey guys,

I still can’t find SAINT SIMONS, we were to meet at a bar and beat up a girl. Oh my, he must be at the study hall with Sammy Drummond, Tico Brown and Joe Hamilton. Wait, Sammy Drummond and Tico Brown flunked out of school, I guess it was calculus that got them. I wonder where Joe is?
