JUCO route seems likely for ECI’s Moody

By DARRYL MAXIE / dmaxie@ajc.com

It once looked like ECI linebacker Dexter Moody was right around the corner from receiving a financial aid offer from Tennessee. Now, junior college looks much more imminent for the 6-foot-2, 205-pound star recruit, who was released from a letter of intent by Georgia in March.

Georgia High School Football Daily, based on an interview with ECI coach Milan Turner, is reporting that Moody “still does not have a qualifying SAT score and also was taking a summer course and appears more likely to enroll at a junior college.” GHSF Daily also had good news for Georgia fans on record-setting running back Washaun Ealey, which can be found on the Junkyard Blawg. If you desire, you can contact the newsletter at ghsfdaily@bellsouth.net.

Initially, Moody hinted to the AJC that he might end up at “maybe Central Michigan or Florida.” As time passed, Tennesssee entered the picture and Moody told the Knoxville News Sentinel on April 19, “I’m going to [sign] as soon as they [the Vols] offer.” But, as more time passed, nothing happened and the likelihood that he would end up at Tennessee right away waned.

Never stops to amaze me that guys like Moody who, have been blessed with athletic ability let something like his attitude, and laziness to not prepare for the academics of college and blow an opportunity that thousands of kids across Ga. would give anything to have; a free ride at UGA to play football. hopefully he`ll grow up some and realize what a immature dumba_ _ he was for letting this happen.

HE started out in trouble. If Milan Turner had any marbles, he would have confronted him when caught with the missus. The missus has the fever and has had it for a while.

even if he wasn’t released from his NLI he would’ve never qualified…wonder if he’ll even be heard about again…

Mid-American Conf.eligability standards are on a par with other top programs. He was not getting into Central Mich, Bowling Green or Toledo for example. Iam with you on this one Gator Growl. He was just talking out of the top of his head. Believe we have seen the last of Mr. Moody. I say about 1/2 year at Juco and then back to S. Georgia to who knows what is in store for this young man. A very sad story.

Thank you Baby Jesus that he got his offer yanked from UGA. We dont need that. Hard enough keeping good kids out of trouble the first time they are on their own, much less the ones that cant even stay out of trouble in high school.

He could have been an all UGA on the ACC police blotter and the football team. He was already trained. Plus his academic credentials are impeccable for UGA.

Dexter, you need to pick G.M.C. as your junior college, then listen to your instructors, coaches and peers. If you can, talk personally with Corvey Irvin, he credits G.M.C. with turning his life around and helping him become the man he is.

This guy reminds me of Marcus Ball; an awesome talent limited by his immaturity and ignorance. He will prob take the same route to the pros..JC, 1 yr of college, then to the NFL. That is if he isnt in jail first.

As a Dawg fan, I forgot about him the say we dropped him.

Harpoon, the poor grammar is quite common in these postings. It really is somewhat embarrassing that fellow Dawg fans are not capable of proofing their posts prior to hitting the submit button.

But I digress. Mr. Moody truly is a disappointment at this time in his life because of the immense opportunity that he squandered. There are dozens of these kids every year that don’t appreciate the chances the good lord gives them.

My hope is that Mr. Moody can recognize the error of his ways and turn things around. Please remember that he is still a kid and will make mistakes. I hope that he can learn from those mistakes and become a better person as a whole!

ANOTHER SAD DAY IN HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL IN GEORGIA. WE AS PARENTS HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR BLACK KIDS THAT ARE SUPER OR AVERAGE ATHLETES THAT WANT TO PLAY AT THE NEXT LEVEL ARE TAKING THE RIGHT CLASSES. BECAUSE, I HAVE SEEN AND READ THAT THIS ATHLETE DOESN’T HAVE A ENOUGH CORE CLASSES TO GET INTO COLLEGE OR HIS CORE GPA IS LOW AND THAT HE HAVE TO SCORE HIGH ON THE SAT OR ACT TO QUALIFY. WE SEEN ALOT OF THIS WITH THIS YEAR AJC SUPER 11 FROM GREG REID , WASHAUN EALEY ,TO ERIC FIELDS AND ETC.EACH SCHOOL SHOULD HAVE A PROGRAM SETUP TO HELP PARENTS WHO DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT IT TAKES ACADEMICALLY FOR A KID TO QUALIFY TOO PLAY AT THE NEXT LEVEL.BECAUSE IT’S SAD TO READ ABOUT THIS IN THE NEWS.PARENTS QUIT LETTING YOUR KID BE EXPLOITED THEN AT THE END YOU WANT TO CRY FOUL. IF YOU CAN’T SEE THROUGH THE LIGHT SOMETHING WRONG BECAUSE THEY WILL KEEP YOUR KID ELGIBLE THROUGH OUT HIS HIGH SCHOOL CAREER AND THE SCHOOL WILL HAVE 1 OR 2 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY IN THEIR TROPHY CASE, BUT ON SIGNING DAY YOU CAN’T SIGN A NATIONAL OF INTENT OR YOUR SCHOLARSHIP IS PENDING BECAUSE YOU ARE WAITING FOR YOUR TEST SCORES TO COMEBACK FROM TAKING THE SAT AND ACT. LET ME EXPLAIN ABOUT KEEPING YOUR SON ELGIBLE TO PLAY LIKE INSTEAD OF TAKING MATH, HISTORY, FOREIGN LANGUAGE,ENGLISH,SCIENCE, AND HEALTH. YOUR SON SCHEDULE MIGHT LOOK LIKE THIS PE,ECONOMICS,SHOP,ENGLISH AND ETC. THIS JUST TO KEEP YOU ELGIBLE SO YOU CAN PLAY WHETHER IT’S FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL,OR TRACK AND FIELD. PARENTS WAKE UP IT’S 2009 NOT 1970S DURING THE DEXTER MANELY DAYS AT OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY WHERE HE GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE BUT COULDN’T READ AT THE 5 GRADER LEVEL. SO PARENTS PLEASE TAKE CONTROL OF KIDS ACADEMICS AND DON’T DEPEND ON NOBODY ELSE BECAUSE AT THE END OF HIS HIGH SCHOOL CAREER WE DON’T WANT TO READ SOMETHING LIKE THIS AGAIN.

Once Again a set of parents who are more interested in hearing someone scream there kids name on Friday nights, than making him study has failed him! Don’t blame this on the system, or “the white man”, this is gross negligence from his house hold, and I say this as A Black man. This is a message to my people, ‘The next time you look at AIR JORDANS, and all the “cool gear”, Think Barnes@Noble, and tutor. After all it is your kids future, no matter his ethnicity! I have to agree with the post about “HS having a class for parents or some instruction for parnets” of all kids not just the star athletes…I was blind on what to do my Jr. & Sr. year in HS, my parents did not know a thing about helping me choose what to do to take the next step…I played freshman ball at Troy University but didn’t have a clue on what to expect or do as a college freshman…will the GA. HS’s step up and help parents with preparing kids for the next biggest step in thier lives??

At some point the HS coaches that put these players on the field have to take some blame, it is downright derelict for a HS Coach to play a player and clearly know that the player is not on track to qualify through the NCAA’s Clearinghouse. It seems as if the HC on the HS Level only cares about “his wins” and cares nothing for that player’s future. The Parents do get most of the blame, but that HS HC is constantly bombarded with info about the NCAA’s Clearinghouse and what it takes to qualify, that HS Coach should make a better effort to see that his players are in a position to at least accept that Scholarship.

I agree with you Big Mike to a point but, by the time a kid is 17-18yrs old no matter his upbringing.. between his peers/teammates, and if he has a half decent Coach, the kid WILL have a basic knowledege of what he needs to do to succeed in life. It doesn`t take a rocket scientist to realize: 1. Study and get decent grades to get into college and continue to play foootball 2. Threatening teachers is not good people skills

True Blue… I must disagree. We do not need a program to help parents help their kids with CORE related issues. If you are a parent, just go to the guidence office at your kids school and ASK THEM. End of program.

PADDY, WHO DO YOU THINK DOES YOUR KID SCHEDULE. THE REASON I SAY THIS IS BECAUSE A LOT OF PARENTS DON’T KNOW ABOUT CLEARINGHOUSE AND CORE CLASSES. SO, IF YOU DON’T KNOW HOW CAN YOU ASK A QUESTION. SOME OF THESE KIDS MIGHT BE THE FIRST FROM THEIR FAMILY THAT TRYING TOO ATTEND COLLEGE. THEN PADDY YOU MIGHT HAVE COME FROM A FAMILY THAT SAID AFTER HIGH SCHOOL EITHER COLLEGE OR SERVICE. THEN YOU PROBABLY WENT TO A SCHOOL THAT CARED ABOUT THEIR ATHLETES, BECAUSE YOU STILL HAVE TEACHERS WHO DISLIKE ATHLETES.SO WHAT IT WOULD HURT IF THE INFORMATION WAS THERE FOR THE PARENTS.PLUS IT’S BEEN PLENTY OF TIME DURING MY SON SCHOOL YEAR FROM ELEMENTARY TO MIDDLE SCHOOL TO HIGH SCHOOL THAT MY WIFE HAD TO GO TO GUIDANCE OFFICE AND CHANGE HIS SCHEDULE , BECAUSE OF THE CLASSES THEY HAD HIM SCHEDULE TO TAKE OR WAS TAKING THAT SEMESTER. IF MY WIFE HAD NOT DID HER HOMEWORK MY SON WOULD HAVE FELL IN THAT HOLE WITH THE OTHERS. SO EVERYBODY DON’T KNOW AND IF YOU DON’T KNOW HOW CAN YOU ASK.

True Blue… you do make some valid points. Sorry you had a bad experience with your son’s guidence teacher. If the guidence office does not know what is going on or is suppose to be going on in their own school they should have been fired . You got short changed by your school system. My situation was much like you predicted except I did college and military. You must be “Carnac”? In my experience, guidence offices worked very close with coaches and any other organizations that could make them a better employee. Congrats to your wife for staying on top of this issue. My suggestion still stands; no program needed, just find the guidence office and ask. Any parent should be a regular visitor to that office. It is what we do to earn the “tag” parent.
