Saban takes aim at recruiting services

Alabama coach Nick Saban says reporters for recruiting services should be held accountable for passing incorrect — and possibly damaging — information to potential Crimson Tide recruits.
Saban’s complaint, given a voice in Ian Rapoport’s blog for the Birmingham News, comes in the wake of NCAA sanctions against Alabama. The Crimson Tide didn’t lose any future scholarships on June 11, when the NCAA placed the school on three years’ probation, forced the football team to vacate 21 victories and fined them. The school is trying to win an appeal against the NCAA.
The Alabama coach, however, says that reporters for recruiting services — ones that Saban hint have an allegiance for teams Alabama recruits against — are spreading misinformation about the NCAA sanctions and that it’s designed to hurt Crimson Tide recruiting. Moreover, Saban seems to imply, the damaging information is being laundered by coaches through the recruiting services.
But Saban didn’t specify any recruiting service, however, nor did he cite a specific example.

Saban has been able to reach across state lines and grab some players and some folks don’t like that. I guess if you can’t beat Saban then you do this kind of stuff. Yeah…yeah..I know Florida and Utah beat them last year but some others failed miserably in their attempts to beat this team that was unproven and unranked. ROLL TIDE.

Frankly I think Saban’s got a point. Recruiting should be about showcasing your school…not badmouthing and rumor-mongering about opposing schools. Of course some schools would never get a recruit without doing that.

Sounds like some fans from schools in the SEC that have been beaten this past year by Alabama are venting (Dawg Fans?). Point blank, Coach Saban is the best innovative recruiter there is and he does play by the rules, if you can’t beat him, whine about him. Of course, all these bloggers teams have the “only honest” recruiters in football. He’s right. The services are basically extensions of the football programs with the information they collect. While I think all programs get some benefits from theses services only a few use them to negatively recruit. You can likely guess the ones that have to do that.

I would not call a 3 point win a beat down, bama definitely put it to the dawgs. The dawgs may not win a game this year, that is if you listen to everyone, but a dawg fan. A dawg fan thinks SEC contenders. Reality is 7 to 8 wins, maybe 9 with good coaching. Outback bowl. Next year probably a 10 win season, the next maybe 11. Consistent team, but not a NC contender.

Coaches and players are the ones that should be held accountable for their actions and for the coaches their like of actions. ADs and the schools if there is a pattern or repeat violations.Seems like some coaches want to blame someone else rather than taking responsibility.

Negative recruiting, this must be a ‘new’ invention by the recruiting services. Puuuhhhleaseeee. If you don’t want negative recruiting, don’t give your adversaries anything to use. That is plain and simple.
Edgewater, please look up the ‘bump’ rule. It will have Saban’s face beside it. You are allowed to say hello as passing ‘if’ you see the prospective recruit and ‘hello’ only. Not telling them how good they will be/we want you to come/etc. A great recruiter? Yeah, I’ll buy that, his record speaks for itself.
Perspective, why make up stuff? Your jealousy is noted. I would consider TOP 5 finishes (in the running for a NC) in multiple years. Top 10 6 out of 7 years. Your jealousy drivels off your keyboard.

Like Saban said, The recruiting sites are not regelated by the NCAA, so they turn into 24 hour a day, 7 day a week recruiters for whatever institution they represent. So what do they do? They get on the phone and plug there school and bad mouth others by saying ” Bama is looking down the barrel of major sanctions or Coach Kiffen is skating on thin ice in Knoxville with his comments”. Some of these guys dont do anything but slam other schools to make theres look better. But in the end the cream will rise to the top and rich will keep getting richer.

Everybody talked about coach Saban. Everybody liked to talk about him. It means one thing: “Everybody’s scared of him. That’s what it means to me.” Trent Richardson, the nations no. 1 or no. 2 rated tailback (depending on recruiting svc) on national signing day last year as he speaks on Coach Saban and Alabama’s second consecutive consensus no. 1 rated recruiting class.
Saban picked up 3 more commitments over this weekend to bring Bama’s 2010 crop to 15 recruits already committed and 2 commits for the 2011 class. This nonsense certainly doesn’t seem to be slowing him down. Before this weekend’s haul Bama had the number 2 rated class in the country according to scout.com.

We’ll be okay although Ole Miss looks like we did coming into the 08 season.
We won’t miss a beat at qb with McElroy. I actually think he will be better than JPW. He is certainly more athletic and has a better touch on the deep ball. Glen Coffee? We had 2 other great tailbacks last year Upchurch and Ingram and we have the no. 1 or no. 2 rated tailback in the country in Trent Richardson coming in to back them up as a 3rd great tailback.. At tackle we have Juco all american James Carpenter stepping in for Andre so we will be fine at Left tackle. What’s funny is that we will have 2 former 5 star rated offensive tackle recruits in Tyler Love and DJ Fluker who will be backups at tackle. You know your depth is strong when you have former 5 star recruits as backups. The talent on the O-line is overwhelming, just need a little more experience is all.

What is so funny about Saban’s comments is that he not only uses the recruiting services…he relies on them to help him sell his program. Every time they say he has a “number 1 recruiting class” he has a feather in his cap. Frankly, it is hard to see how they have “damaged” his recruiting considering the services say he is number 1. I have to respectfully disagree with you on Ole Miss. I think they are the real deal. Of their 4 losses last year they were all early in the season and all were by 7 pts or less and 2 of them Ole Miss just screwed up and gave the game away. They return 18 starters. Their last 5 games they weren’t just beating people. They were destroying people worse than Georgia was when they were hot at the end of 07. They put a brutal, physical beatdown on LSU in tiger stadium. They gave Alabama its only close game of the 08 regular season. Kentucky scored a td late with 30 seconds left to give their game against Bama the appearance of being close but Ole Miss was really the only team in the regular season that played us close. Last, they not only beat Florida fair and square but they did it in the swamp and they did it by stuffing Tim Tebow on 4th down. How impressive is that?
I can’t understand how it is that people think an LSU team that won only 3 conference games last year is all of a sudden going to contend just because of one good game against Tech. Ole Miss also plays Bama and LSU at home and they avoid Florida and UGA in the east. LSU plays both Bama and Ole Miss on the road and also plays FLA. and UGA. Things are stacked for Ole Miss in terms of scheduling.

Sorry dude but you and Dennis both still have it wrong. The actual probations were once in the mid 90s due to Antonio Langham, 2nd probation in 2002-2005, and the probation just handed down is the 3rd. We did not go on probation twice in the 90s. The investigation in the late 90s (Albert Means) led to the probation handed down in 2002. Dennis just has it wrong buddy. Sports writers sometimes get it wrong or do you believe everything you read?

Just to help you out once again. There were 4 appearances before the committee for 3 separate probations, one in 1995, then again in 2002-2005, and again in 2009. Are we straight now?

Actually, the number is now up to (19) nineteen!!! The (3) three you mentioned, plus the basketball probation the school was on at the time of the 2002 football probation, and the (15) fifteen more in softball, baseball, gymnastics, women’s basketball, soccer, volleyball and both the men’s and women’s teams in basketball, golf, swimming, tennis and track and field.

I am not a cheater. I play by all of the rules.
These recruiting sites are run by a bunch of nothing know it alls.
We did not lose scholarships. We did not lose bowl appearances.
The text book charges were all fabricated by some players we released from their scholarships because they were not doing it the “Nick Way.”
It is either the “Nick Way or the High Way.”
As for cars and cash stories being thrown around these days, that is from disgruntled Auburn Alumni.
Go pick on Florida regarding their felonies or USC regarding play for pay and leave me alone. I run a clean program.

What is He going to say when NCAA comes out with their letter to check out giving cars to recruits. The state of Alabama all know this one will be the big one that they can’t hind. Little wonder He is being forced to come to GA for players. SAD that these ga. kids do not get the truth since they live over here way from the ncaa looking around.

The Gator Nation spanked the elephants last year on OUR way to the SEC and BCS Championships! We will win the SEC and BCS Championships again this year! Let Saban cry, we will still own the football championships for years to come no matter how Saban tries to cheat. Go Gators!

Hey Coach Nick…While I will agree with you that Saban is a good college coach and recruiter, I’ll take exception to your little snide remark about Urban Meyers Florida Gators. First of all, Meyer has NEVER been on probation or for that matter even investigated for any real violations by the NCAA at ANY school he has been. Second, he has never told a team he has coached or the media or the players that he “wasn’t going to go anywhere”…then turn around and do just the opposite (integrity). And third, if you look into the recent articles on the arrests over 4 years, you will find that out of the 19 actual players involved, 14 came from either the previous staff or from the first year when he first got there and had very limited time and basically was just trying to hold on to the recruiting class they had. In fact, out the last 3 classes there have been a total 3 arrests. Now, I’m talking about arrests, not convictions or a “your guilty” by a judge. By the way, the worst offenders who WERE guilty are no longer with the team. ALL Meyer has done is to turn a down program into a winner everywhere he has been! From Bowling Green to Utah (you remember them, don’t you?) to Florida…Let me put in perspective for you…let’s just say that Saban wins the next 2 out of three National Championsips! Man, the Alabama people would erect a 50ft statue of the man and re-name the stadium!!! You couldn’t make a left hand turn without going down Nick Saban Blvd or Nick Saban Highway. Shoot, they’d probably re-name the damn school!!! And just think…with a little good fortune, Urban just might be going for 3 out of 5 this year! NOW you know the definition of a WINNER!!!
