Clemson gets commitment from Etowah lineman

By DARRYL MAXIE / dmaxie@ajc.com

Etowah offensive tackle Reid Webster has committed to Clemson.

“I went up there and it just felt like the place I needed to be,” Webster, a 6-foot-5, 270-pound rising senior, told the AJC. He chose the Tigers over Florida State, Miami and Mississippi, all of whom he considered too far from home.

“I felt like it was a place I could play,” he continued. “It’s got a good business school and it’s close so my dad can come and see most of the home games. I always wanted to play in the ACC since the ninth grade.”

Wow.. where’s the standard knee-jerk comment from Dawggie fans that “obviously this guy wasn’t good enough or he’d be going to Georgia”?

Because they do not have to. They know he is good enough to go to GA. BTW, read the last paragraph….it says all they need to know.

He probably knew a long time ago he wasn’t a true SEC player. Smart kid.

There you are, fellas. Thanks for not disappointing me. Nice to know some things are predictable.. Like Georgia losing to Florida, etc..

Congratulatiosn to Reid. A smart kid and a well thought out decision. He must feel pretty good to commit to the school he has wanted to play for. He will do well both on the field and in the clasroom.

I wasn’t thinking this kid was not good enough for UGA – I was wondering why Tech didn’t go after him since he wanted to stay close to home an Tech needs o-line help. UGA is loaded on the o-line and probably will not take another one this year.

Tech OL cheat, they chop block and he didn’t want the retaliation that comes with the territory sometimes.

A kid commits to Clemson and the bloggers are talking about UGA recruiting. Okay class to write your 3rd grade paper correctly, you must stay on topic. No little Bubba, it does not matter what your hick views are. You must stay on topic. Yes Missy, I know a lot of your friends are now talking about the Gators because they have been winning. I know that you were all wearing different jerseys last year. Class that is called the bandwagon effect. That is for people that lacky integrity. Integrity is your word for today.

The blog has nothing to do with Georgia. No, UGA cannot sign every kid in the state. Why didn’t GT go after him? They are a state school too. You always have pathetic people trying to incite gossip and drama on these blogs. Get a clue. If Florida feels like they are superior, why are they constantly making remarks about UGA? We don’t go around bashing Vandy. The bloggers are overshadowing this young man and his big decision. Congrats to the young man and Clemson. Go DAWGS…

Good for a kid from Etowah signing with a D1 school. Growing up in Cherokee County my whole life I remember when it was a miracle just for a kid to sign with a college. Cherokee county has come a long with with high school football.

Congrats on your decision Reid, I have no idea how UGA was brought into this discussion, but it is nice that you wished to compete in the ACC and did not pick gtu.

It is funny to me how the gtu fans have replaced scu fans as the most delusional in college football. I must admit that scu has had more success against UGA during the last 18 years (with out cheating as per the NCAA) than has gtu. I really don’t hate tech, it goes much deeper than that.

Something to be said for staying fairly local, but still going away to school. I know that GA Tech and Georgia both recruited Reid , but had not offered. He was invited to both of there elite one day camps, but opted out when he got the offer he wanted from Clemson. Tech may have been a good fit as Etowah runs the veer option, but had limited scholarships available. Mute point anyway. Go Tigers!

good for reid. georgia doesn’t know what to do with blue chip football players anyway. year after year the dawgs are near the top in recruiting and barely finish in the top 4 in their division of the sec. so congrats reid, for being smarter than a fifth grader, or in laymen terms, a georgia football player. rtr
