Buford’s Curry sticks closer to home this time

By DARRYL MAXIE / dmaxie@ajc.com

Buford linebacker Jessel Curry, who weeks ago committed to West Virginia and then recanted, announced his commitment to Auburn today.

“I love the people,” Curry told AuburnSports.com. “Love the football that they play — big-time SEC. It’s just an amazing campus and amazing school.”

Curry, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound rising senior, changed his mind about West Virginia because “if I would have gone to West Virginia, my family would have had to drive a long way or flown to every game. I didn’t want to put that on them.”

He is the son of Buddy Curry, who played linebacker for the Falcons during an eight-year NFL career that stretched from 1980-87. But he sees another father figure in defensive coordinator Ted Roof, who was key to securing Curry once the Mountaineers were out of consideration.

“Coach Roof is going to be like my dad,” Curry said.

Wish more prospects thought of the travel time for their parents. Good decision.

Ok, Curry its tickle pile time. Here at Tech its a tradition for the new recruits to do it nude from the waist down! Go Nambalin Wreck!

Could someone please tell me the meaning of committment? It’s obvious that it doesn’t mean what I think it means.

Congrats on your decision. I can respect a kids decision to keep his family in mind. Good luck on the Plains, except when UGA is there.

You guys are seriously a classy bunch when it comes to college football blogging. I really appreciate the kind words and I agree it is very cool he considered his family in his decision. He seems like a great young man and we will be happy to have him on the plains.

And for the UGA alums and fans I only hope we can stay in the game with you guys next year and personally I do a lot of business in Athens and love it and I hope that if we can’t play each other in the SEC championship then I pull for you guys.

War Damn Eagle! and go dawgs (sort of)

You will learn a lot playing for Ted Roof. The man is a class act in every way, except the fact he went to Tech & not UGA. Still love Georgia, but Auburn is a great place — enjoy it.

These kids have a right to change their minds. This is a very difficult decision for the kids. It’s their life.

Jessel welcome to the Auburn family — glad to have you on board. You will be in line for early PT if you work half as hard as your dad did. If I were not a Tiger, I would be a dawg. Kudo’s to you ugys for where your program is and the class you show us every other year. Other schools could learn from the same.

Dawg here: Auburn is getting a good one here. I wish we could have recruited this kid, but we’re so stacked at his positions. I hope he does well for you guys! Good Luck! GO DAWGS!!

Derrick what a joke you are. You obviously dont know a thing about recruiting and dont know what this kid brings to Auburn’s table. Kid can FLY and is a head hunter. Go look at his stats and mostly at Full back and you may be able to see youre an idiot.

Happy to see a local kid stay close to home, well closer than WV. But I’m sure that his high school coach being an Auburn alum on the ‘89 SEC Championship team had nothing to do with the decision. Can only wonder why the Jess Simpson doesn’t get more kids over there, rather than some of the other big time schools his players go to (ND, Oregon, etc.).
