One “monster pickup” a week and Georgia could redefine the meaning of great recruiting class.
The Bulldogs, and especially assistant Stacy Searels, have reason to bask in the afterglow today after landing a commitment from Bolles School offensive tackle Brent Benedict of Jacksonville. They snatched him away from notable adversaries Florida, Alabama, USC, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Penn State and Clemson. Last week, Bulldogs fans rejoiced over beating the Gators to top receiver Da’Rick Rogers.
Here’s what the experts are saying about the Benedict coup:
“This is a monster pickup for Georgia,” said Jamie Newberg of Rivals. “To go down to the Sunshine State and pull one of the top linemen in the nation is huge. They beat Florida in their own backyard, USC and others. Benedict is an exceptional offensive line prospect that’s nasty, has great size, feet and athleticism. The Dawgs have really picked it up in Florida.”
According to Scout.com South Recruiting Analyst Chad Simmons, “Benedict is an aggressive offensive linemen that finishes his blocks, that understands blocking schemes, that can run block, that can pass protect, and that has a high level of intelligence. There are not many faults in his game, but his arm length is a minor concern at tackle. He is one of the best in the country.”
Rivals’ Barry Evrey, one of the sharper analysts in the game, raved about Benedict, who is rated the No. 5 offensive tackle by his organization and the ninth-best by scout.com.
“He’s one of the most athletic big men that I’ve ever seen. Period,” Evrey said. “He’s got a 30-inch vertical jump and off the line of scrimmage he is a legitimate 5.0 or faster. He can fly. Georgia does not have anyone [among the linemen] on the team who is this athletic.”
Benedict told the Sporting News what he learned by playing at Bolles in Jacksonville, what has made him one of the great pickups from the Class of 2010.
“I think I have worked hard and I’ve had the coaching in this program to develop myself,” Benedict said. “I’m pretty well-rounded as a player and as a person in general. A lot of coaches have told me that, that I’m the complete package, that I’m not going to be in trouble off the field. That’s one of my selling points. I’m a straight-forward guy who is looking forward to going to school somewhere, and then I’ll get out there and play a little football on the weekends.”

I have a friend that told me that this kid will be an All-American at UGA. Great kid with talent. Great student with technique. High character with power. This is exactly what UGA needed. A physical OL that dominates the line. I know the needy people will post stupid stuff in hopes of getting attention, but the truth is that this is huge for UGA. Now we need to find a DE that can rush the passer. GO DAWGS

blah, blah, blah….you puppies always seem to grab great prospects from florida, so what you think he’s the only 5 star lineman in fl. Seems that even though you get great prospects you still can’t beat the mighty gators–you know who I’m talking about the defending national champs who will once again beat your sorry butts on oct 31 by about 40 or 50. Next year I.E.. post Tebow we will still beat your ass because Brantley is better than anything you’ve got on your also ran team.

The Gators are getting the OL they want and the OL that fit their system. But, Benedict is a good get for the Dawgs.

Of course, it’s been going on for so long now, the AJC obviously doesn’t care. gatorman770- the cool thing about this whole recruiting process is it doesn’t end next month and you don’t get extra points if you have the most verbal’s by the time summer starts. We have until February 2010 to catch up and don’t worry about us we will be just fine come February. If anything you should be worried about how many of your verbal’s are going to flip flop to another team between now and February. Stacy Searels is a HUGE credit to this institution!
Watch what his O-line will do for Georgia this fall.
His running game will make the passing game more effective and the defense more rested and productive (at the same time).
Georgia will be twice as good as the skeptics are predicting. And Searels will produce more all SEC linemen in the next 3 years than Georgia has had in the last 12.
Better ask Damon Evans and Matthew Stafford to create an annual raise and promotion for him. He’s a throwback. Silent but deadly. He’s as good as it gets!

You can bet that Searles will bring out the best in him. It’s too bad certain co-ordinators, you know who they are, are not of his ability. Searles deserves to be the highest paid coach on Richt’s staff, and they should spend whatever it takes to keep him.

Where are the All SEC D players that Martinez has recruited? This is the prob at UGA. Martinez does not recruit any kids that play great D. There is no bond with him and the D players ………..look at the lack of production on D. See the Bama, Florida and tech games. The D simply laid down. On Offense for the U of F game, they too laid down with fumbles, ints and the like. Why that game? We choked is why.
If Martinez does not develop a great D THIS YEAR, with his very solid line ……..he needs to take a hike, period. Everybody knows that he needs to leave Athens. I expect it will be in December, as we accept the Outback bid to play Iowa with a very good UG O team but no UGA D. The usual.

bank walker – not that it really matters at this point since he’ll be a senior in HS his year and won’t get smaller, but Scout list Steven at 6′6″ and Rivals list him at 6′5″ with weight at 208 and 210 respectively. I’m just happy were picking up some taller WRs like UGA has recently signed.
Really? – Last year when UGA had so many early commitments it seemed to be huge story and in the end you lost some and gained some surprises at the end of the recruiting period just like the Gators probably will.
I hate to be a Grinch but since the 1960’s when I started reading the AJC, while growing up in Marietta, it’s been known as a SE regional newspaper in fact it use to state it “covered dixie like the dew” before reverse racism caused it to be removed (as well as half of Atlanta’s street names) so I interpret this column titled “Recruiting” as SE regional recruiting. Besides if you read online Florida papers you will note UGA supporters constantly posting comments on them.

What people have forgotten, or never got in the first place is that Jacksonville is at least as much UGA’s backyard as it is Florida’s. Dooley never looked at Jacksonville as enemy territory. He was welcomed there. In some minds it’s Georgia’s second largest city. If Richt would take the same view, he wouldn’t be afraid to go play there anymore, he’d make it his own, like Dooley did.

You guys are forever complaining about Gator fans being on “your” blog. The last time I checked, this was an AJC blog, not a University of Georgia newspaper blog. And Gator grads read more than just one newspaper website. We like to “expand” our thinking and knowledge…not just limit both to one sided thinking that leads to brainwash and ignorance. Also, if you guys are so offended about Gators being on “youg blog,” then why are you guys always on the “Tech” blogs ripping their recruits? You can’t have it both ways. Anyway, news about a Florida kid going to Georgia IS of interest to Florida fans. When the AJC limits their newspaper to ONLY Georiga fans, then Florida fans will not be on this site. Until then, I believe the constitution allows us to read and blog on any public blog site. So, please, SHUT THE BLANK UP about these sites being Georgia only sites. You sound so STUPID when you bark like that. And, since my sister went to Georgia, I know most Georgia grads are not that stupid. P.S. Gatorsports.com is the site for the Gainesville, Florida paper. Georgia fans (and other SEC team fans) are always on the site expressing their hatred for the Gators. So, stop speaking with a forked tongue. It only shows your lack of an imaginative thinking process…called ignorance.

You are all a bunch of idiots if this is all you have to talk about. Season starts in 2 and 1/2 months. I think this stuff is great, but let’s talk about stopping Ok State, USC, and ASU. Then we can worry about some recruiting. It really doesn’t matter if someone is 6′6″ or 6″4″ or if every college in the country recruited someone or not. Long live the memories of Terry Hoage, Steve Greer, Rodney Hampton, and the many other great no names that came through the college doors.

Really?…Kiffin stole “one” player from Florida, and he was the only “committed” recruit we lost last year…period…and the kid was more worried about playing time at Florida. He would have been 4th string his first year and he told Meyer he wanted him to commit to him starting (just like Reid). Right…the kid is going to beat out Andre Debose. Sure. He has and had a better chance to play at Tennessee, and you can’t blame the kid for jumping ship. P.S. His jumping ship just opens doors for WRs to be signed this year, when we need to sign a few. Last year, the Gators only needed to sign the best high school receiver recruit in the country, Dubose, and they did. The kid jumping ship allowed Meyer to sign one of the top DBs in the nation. So, the jump worked in Florida’s favor, as they really didn’t need another WR last year (see the WR 3 deep chart on the Florida roster).

I understand the notion that all white WR’s must be “possession” receivers and have “great hands”, but this guy may, just maybe, bring more to the table. I don’t believe UGA is in the business of offering scholarships to “possession” receivers…there are plenty of walk-ons that provide “possession” capabilities. Just my honest assessment, but what do I know…maybe he turns out to be a possession WR.

J Smurf, I italicized the word “possession” because of exactly what you said. He’s white, and the “possession” moniker is something that will always be applied. He’s also incredibly talented. I read where he tore up the UF camp, catching 9 of 10 passes thrown to him. I would consider him somewhat of a sleeper because he began moving up everyone’s charts just recently. I wasn’t trying to disparage him. I’m thrilled to have him at UGA.

Did you really use the constitution as an excuse as to why you read and post about UGA football rather then post on your own teams site? Do you really need that as excuse?

My prior comment was intended for Tampa Gator.

In the SEC you win with defense. Last year, Florida lost tons of defensive players to knees and jail and the like and ended up with one Frosh All American corner that had to play in the spot where one kid either flunked out or quit. See? This kid just got into some street fight in Gainesville, recently. No news there. Big deal and that is not my point. They all get in T.
Ayway, why can UGA not lock up every year two or three great HS down linemen and an All World linebacker or two and two to three d backs? One such all world LB will not be coming to UGA from Emanuel Institute, I believe. Why did we get him to committ in the first place? The really good one from Columbus or Lagrange? went to Southern Cal. Where was CWM???
We sign a full compliment of offensive players every year lately due to Bobo and Tracy S. and Garner goes after the D players and he gets one or two like John Knox that just left school. Yes, Garner can recruit. My question is where is CWM in recruiting great players. Who has he signed that has made All SEC???
PS I love Rennie Curran as he hustles on every down. Hits like a brick wall. Safeties and corners??? See the damned Tech game.
This is a totally fair question.

Memo to Coach Richt:
We love these athletic offensive lineman. Pay Coach Stacey Searels (sp) whatever you have to to keep him!

I guess playing every year in Jacksonville has its advantages after all.

Its hilarious all the haters coming here. This guy was at the top of ufs list, just like Murray and Charles were and just like Richardson was. They can not stand it that UGA is coming into florida and getting their top talent.Even ut pulled away one of their more important pieces in the 09 class. The fact is uf will not go to the NC this year and after this year they are on a serious decline.

Hey MikkUGA…..are you freakin drunk or just plain stupid–perhaps both. You idiots think that top notch recruiting transfers to championships. Last time I looked your NC year was 1980! That’s about 30 years ago ladies. One thing is for certain if UF fails to get to Pasadena it won’t be because of you weak puppies who we’ll drub again this year and next year as well. Brantley is head a shoulders above the 2 frosh you have…

Wouldn’t you think this headline could read…
“TOP OL PROSPECT SHUNS FLORIDA “…….
Or no, our home paper likes to bash the home team only with such negative headlines.
