Ealey’s arrival ‘just a matter of time,’ Richt says

By DARRYL MAXIE / dmaxie@ajc.com

High school record-setting running back Washaun Ealey of Emanuel County Institute isn’t on campus at the University of Georgia — not yet, anyway — but Bulldogs coach Mark Richt isn’t worried.

“Washaun, I think it’s just a matter of time,” Richt told the Athens Banner-Herald.

Sixteen of the 20 in Georgia’s Class of 2009 recruiting haul are already on campus. Ealey, defensive tackle Kwame Geathers, kicker Brandon Bogotay and linebacker Nick Williams still haven’t reported. Only as far as Geathers’ qualifying academically, Richt said, “There’s still some information coming in that will give us a better picture.” The rest are expected as well.

Ealey set a state record for touchdowns scored with 133 during his ECI career, including a single-season record 58 in 2007.

Give him time he’ll be there. He is the next great back at UGA, I don’t see anything in King or Samuels. Ealey should be our starter this year in the backfield.

What a great talent… Will be hard to keep of the field from the time he arrives. Should upgrade the position tremendously….

Let this kid start right away. King hasnt been anything since his injury which was his senior year in high school. Samuels is too fragile and cant get the hard yards.

Come on guys, this guy had great numbers, at an ‘A’ level school. Look what he did in the State Champ game! He has a LOT of growing and learning to do before he steps onto the field. He MIGHT play by mid-year.

Hey 02 Dawg,
I think GA had a couple of backs that had great numbers at the “A” level school. One back name was Garrison Hearst who played for 1-A powerhouse Lincoln County High School, and another back name was Herschel Walker who played for Johnson County High School another “A” level school.

Most of these posts are from dreamers. The kid has not played at this level before and has never had to pick up blocking schemes from blitzing linebackers. Don’t anoint him as a savior. He’ll do fine in a couple of years but for now we need to depend on our returning players to get r’ done.

So should we have waited to put A.J. Green out there? He had never played at that level. If he is as good as he was scouted then he is better than what we got.

Dude, split ends & running backs have slightly different responsibilities. I mean, a receiver doesn’t have to decide who to pick up on a blitz on a passing down. They’re running routes.

It’s a bit of a different situation, way easier for a freshman receiver to do well than a back.

I agree with OKC Bulldog and SEC, with what we have coming back at RB, Ealey may be our best bet. King is too hesitant and doesn’t run hard. Samuels was only 17 last year, so he could improve. Carlton Thomas could be a good (Tyson Browning) type scatback (but can’t carry the load as a feature back). I think our best shot for a first class running back is with Ealey. He will have a lot to learn though.

Also, 02Dawg, Ealey didn’t have a great state championship game but the kid showed a ton of guts just playing. His ankles were wrapped up so much (due to injury) I am surprised he could walk. I would rather have a guy that plays hurt than just sits it out.

Lets see Gator Hater, WTF, etc. You do the math and if that’s not possible get a GT grad to help you with analyzing the following data on arrest:
ARREST COMPARISON
Here’s how Florida football arrests (24 from 2005-2009) during the Urban Meyer compare with rival schools:
– Georgia, 30 arrests
– Tennessee, 19 arrests
– Florida State, 13 arrests
– Miami, 2 arrests
and I would love to see the arrest data for former atheletes. What was the headline today on former NFL and UGA player Arthur James Marshall Jr. charged with bank fraud.

It’s unfortunate, but both UGA, UF, UT, etc. have had their a share of player arrest.

SEC is very correct…Athens-Clarke Central Police target any and all football players…no hard evidence to back up my statement but I have been to Athens enough to see with my own two eyes what those guys are capable of…One student got a open contaniner ticket just when his foot stepped onto the sidewalk. The cops were watching him and ran over as soon as his fot hit the concrete…Sad but true…It’s all about traffic control for those guys on Game Day…

For the record, both my parents graduated from UGA which just proves “2 wrongs does make a right” and that “2 negatives equals a positive”!
LOL

If Tebow gets hurt we have John Brantley to step in who has a very accurate rocket arm like Stafford, but doesn’t throw off his back foot like Stafford did.

I also was shocked by the recent Miami arrest record, but the data was in a Florida paper Tuesday.

02dawg, What you saw of Ealey in the championship game was all heart and determination. You did not see the young man that I have watched for the last few years. Most players would have been on the bench. I am not saying he will be the starting, but I am sure CR will rotate backs like he has always done and I believe Ealey will be in the rotation. He will amaze you with his vision and change of direction.

It does not matter what high school class you are in. It matters how quickly one can mature and learn the scheme and plays of College. Ask Jasper Sanks. He was suppose to be the next Herschel. Let the kids play first.

Ealey didn’t play up to form in the state championship game (still got over 100 Yards) – he had a serious ankle injury and shoulder injury going in to the game and could not cut on the ankle. He was really beat up because he ran the ball more times than any player in Georgia history. When he is healed up he will be very good – however he may be redshirted this season due to injury.
