Tennessee fans feel ESPN’s “Outside The Lines” orchestrated a “gotcha moment” when the show reported that it might have caught coach Lane Kiffin committing an NCAA violation.
A segment shows Kiffin talking briefly to a recruit, addressed the five secondary violations Tennessee has self-reported, then turned the tables with host Bob Ley telling viewers, “It is entirely possible that you just saw another one.”
Ley goes on to explain that “in the infamously thick NCAA rulebook, Rule 13.0.1, [it states] media members cannot observe recruiting contact by coaches.”
If those filming the segment knew they were participating in a secondary violation, they certainly didn’t alert Kiffin at the time. It’s a sticky situation all the way around. It’s entirely predictable that fans responding to a Knoxville News Sentinel poll would overwhelmingly side with Kiffin, which they did.
But it also raises questions about journalistic ethics — at the very least, about news organizations making themselves a part of stories instead of simply reporting them. That’s one of the reasons some news organizations, including the AJC, got out of the business of voting in polls, for example. In one breath, we’d be reporting on the same Top 25 that we had a direct hand in shaping.
It’s understandable when, for instance, a reporter goes undercover to expose somebody scamming the public, or the public trust being violated with tax dollars being wasted. Watchdog reporting seerves the public good. This falls far short of that standard.
Anyway, Tennessee is supposed to be reviewing the matter. Neither it nor the NCAA has issued a statement about it.

The whole thing was a hit piece on Kiffin, especially giving Al Davis cart blanche in sliming him. I could care less about the secondary violations. UT has accumulated less than most programs. I’m just happy we haven’t had 24 arrests over a 4 year period like Florida. I wonder when ESPN is going to report on that?

So what you are saying, it was ESPN fault that Kiffin don’t know the NCAA rules………………or how do you know ESPN knew the rule at the time of the interview. Dmax don’t blame ESPN or imply they “set up” Kiffin. I think it was a honest mistake by Kiffin, but I see no blame on ESPN part for stating the obvious (if it’s a rule, then it’s a rule).
ESPN or the AJC for that fact has an obligation to the NCAA or coaches when reporting a story, onlt obligation is to get the story right. I bet Kiffin/Tenn. continue to grant interviews to ESPN. The same can be said for that lame of an excuse of a man named Brandon Marshall or any other clown that gets in front of a TV camera and have no idea what they are “spitting off” about.

Here’s another question about journalistic ethics Darryl, since you brought the subject up. Is it okay for a “reporter” to take an entire story from another website (i.e. rivals.com) and regurgitate it as his own work? Somehow I don’t think this one will be answered either… keep up the good work.

I find the comments from UGA fans to be pretty hypocritical. If this indeed is a secondary violation, that will be the second one for the 2010 class for Tennessee…the first being the result of a stupid staff assistant. UGA has already reported 4 secondary violations from recruiting the 2010 class. On another related note, Oklahoma averages over 30 secondary violations a year. I fail to see why these are such a big deal. Because there is no punishment, coaches often commit these by design if they can attain any edge in recruiting a prospect. Richt, Meyer, Saban, Miles, Nutt, Spurrier…they all do it.

I’m a Georgia alum so I have no love for Tennessee and especially none for Kiffin. But, I think Tennessee fans are correct in theri assessment that ESPN is trying to paint their program in a negative light. They are suppose to report the news not participate in espionage. I bleeive that any Dawg fan wiith a memory cna recall the whole way they portarayed Georgia during the Harrick affair. I also think that the politicking that the Gameday crew did at the conclusion of the 2007 season was disgusting. It was not their job to disuade voters from voting Georiga into a possible NC game appearance. The voters can make up their minds without the ad nauseum of appealse to not vote for Georgia. Basically, ESPN just falls over backwards in their love for USC. The gush on and on about the Trojans every week on Gameday and have never serioulsy reported the very concerning issues with Reggie Bush and that program. We just have to pray that FOX or the VS. channel can overtake ESPN someday.

The sad thing is that if Kiffin didn’t have USC as a former employer and stir the pot the way he’s doing@UT,ESPN wouldn’t give a rat’s rear end about him(any stories on Norm Chow/Sarkisian?). UT isn’t on ESPN’s fellatio list like USC, Notre Dame, the little 11, OU & Texas and wouldn’t be unless Kiffin or someone from USC were there. Now they’re fellating Tebow until UF loses a game. That’s how ESPN rolls. Lane, learn the rules, close your hole and quit embarrassing youself, UT’s fans & UT because you’re not totally blameless in this either.

First of all, yes it’s a violation of NCAA bylaws. Second, it’s a secondary violation that the head coach of any major school should know about. Third, common sense would say that this violation was probably noticed in the editing room, then commented on by Ley.
Tennessee fans need to get a grip and realize that they hired a really good recruiter who needs a tutor to help learn the rules.

Sec Fan – Secondary violations rarely involve the head coach or his assistants, that’s why they are secondary. Most of the time, they are over zealous alumni or fans. I’m not sure about most coaches, but as far as Mark Richt, I don’t believe he is intentially breaking rules. If that was the case, he certainly would have attended one recruits graduation.

Lane knew the rules, the thing about secondary violations is they don’t matter. He could have fourty and it would mean as much if he had zero. The twitter violation had already been commited 97 other times according to the NCAA before Kiffin did it. Therefore he probably knew that would be a violation too. The bottom line is zero arrests since he has been there and zero suspensions. Bad apples like Morley have been dismissed and it has left players that have no history of trouble. He exercised Christian beliefs in his treatment of Daniel Hood and I commend Knox Catholic in reccomending a young man that has turned his life around and given it over to Christ.
Also to be noted, every single recruit in the 2009 class is going to qualify. He is recruiting young men that excel in the classroom as well as on the field. Well done Mr. Kiffin.

Harrick earned exactly what he got. I am all for ESPN (and other media outlets) reporting the crap that goes on. Vendettas are a different story. I suspect that if ESPN reports something negative about “your” school, you are going to think they are out to get you. Guess what, there are fans from other schools that will think they give your school a pass.
If ESPN loves USC so much, then how come Kiffin is being treated this way? He was a USC guy after all.
Conspiracy theories are fun, but rarely accurate.
As for ESPN recording the potential violation, it is not the job of a network to know the NCAA rules. If Kiffin knew he was being filmed (maybe he did not), then he should have had the camera crew stop filming or asked the producers not to air the film.

Third, Tennessee fans are in no position to cast stones at ANY program based on their recent history both on and off the field. AJC promises to have articles on this happening for the next 5 days. Recruits present said they were impressed with the volume and stench. One top un-named recruit said he now has real “love” for Kiffy and said that he ‘would gladly buy a beer for any man that could cut one like that’. Vol fans interviewed said they were really proud of Kiffy’s creativity. The NCAA released a statement that expelling gas is not a violation of NCAA rules. Should Kiffin come up with any acts with more class, the media will be on it immediately. Don’t worry folks, the Kiffy bafoon couldn’t possibly come up with anything demonstrating intelligence or class.

All I can to Kiffin is…actually two things…First, gosh you have a really, really beautiful wife who seems to adore all the money you make! Second, man you do a lot of stupid things. Just proves, you don’t have to be smart to make a lot of money…just have to do things outside the lines.

Amazing how the UGA fans are blasting Kiffin about the violations when their Saint Richt is right there in the same boat. Amazing how a guy with all that experience and piety can have the same level of infractions as lil’ ol’ Kiffin. How’s that National Title coming over there in Athens? What’s the excuse on winning the ring – or NOT in Richt’s case? Urban’s got himself 2. Mediocrity is the name of the game in pup land. Perhaps when UGA overcomes their downward spiral, UGA fans can justifiably mock someone else. Even if they themselves aren’t guilty of equal amounts of violations…odd that so much experience leads to that…

I didn’t read all comments so forgive me if I am repeating someone. But will someone please acknowledge the fact that while they do have a news channel, ESPN (Entertainment and Sports Prgramming Network) is primarily set up for entertainment. They are not a news organization and you would think a newspaper would recognize that instead of hiding behind the fact it so respectably quit voting in the AP poll, though it still forms its on polls, like for high school football…and reports on these schools. Essentially there is no difference in the polls since the AP no longer determines who plays in the MNC. Hmmm?

Kiffin was fired in September 2008 for cause after what owner Al Davis described as acts of insubordination and lying.”Lane Kiffin is a flat-out liar. He lied to the team, he lied to the fans, and he lied to the media,” the Raiders’ statement said. “He will try to destroy that university like he tried to destroy the Raiders, and will eventually clash with (women’s basketball coach Pat) Summitt and (men’s basketball coach Bruce) Pearl.”

ESPN is a joke….Tennessee is their flavor of the day and are getting sickening in there coverage of them. Did it to UGA years ago…Harrick and next year it will be someone else. These are minor infractions that every program has….just really picking on UT for now. Funny thing is it seems to be backfiring on ESPN if they are really after UT. Where is there reports on the Ohio States, etc with all the minor infractions. For that matter….UGA has quite a few, and everyone else. I am just a fan of the SEC…..from SC and find it sickening of their coverage.

The best thing Tennessee can do is cut their loses now. Kiffin is an accident waiting to happen.

Craig (AKA Mr. Brilliant)
Can you list the violations “St. Richt” is guilty of? Please, tell us what you know. “Mediocrity” and “downward spiral”? We’ve had more 10 win seasons over the last 5 years than anyone in the SEC and finished #2 in the country in ‘07. Spare the dribble for Cryer and Heblow and learn to think before you spout off baseless info!

if secondary violations mattered at all, I would care somewhat. The UGA program is the king of secondary violations…. it simply doesn’t matter.
