By BILL RANKIN

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Wednesday, June 10, 2009

The guilty verdict on the terrorism conspiracy charge against his son was expected, Syed Riaz Ahmed said Wednesday.

But Ahmed said his son, Syed Haris Ahmed, never harmed anyone and only expressed thoughts that he never acted upon.

“You think something and you’re guilty,” Syed Riaz Ahmed said, standing outside a federal courtroom shortly after hearing his son pronounced guilty. “He’s not guilty of any crimes in the eyes of Allah. He’s guilty of U.S. laws.”

Syed Haris Ahmed was misled into his extremist thoughts by propagandist Web sites, his father said, adding that he believed his son never would have followed though on any plans to engage in terrorism.

Ahmed, a 24-year-old former Georgia Tech student, was convicted of conspiring to provide material support to terrorists. During his trial last week, prosecutors introduced into evidence e-mails and Internet chats during which Ahmed said he wanted to engage in violent jihad.

In the summer of 2005, Ahmed went to Pakistan to join a terrorist training camp, but changed his mind and returned to Atlanta, re-enrolling at Georgia Tech. Federal prosecutors said that after Ahmed returned, he regretted not joining the camp and considered returning to Pakistan to follow through with his plans.

Ahmed will be sentenced after the Aug. 3 trial of his alleged co-conspirator, Ehsanul Islam Sadequee of Roswell.

“I’ve always thought this was a close case,” Ahmed’s lawyer, Jack Martin, said. “Perhaps this case all along was about what is the appropriate sentence.”

Ahmed already has spent more than three years in solitary confinement at the U.S. penitentiary here awaiting trial. He now faces up to 15 years in federal prison.

U.S. District Judge Bill Duffey, who presided as judge and jury during Ahmed’s trial last week, handed down the guilty verdict during a short hearing Wednesday.

The slight, bearded defendant, wearing a white skull cap, showed little emotion standing before Duffey. Returning to the defense table, he smiled and waved to his father and two of his sisters in the courtroom.

After the hearing, Ahmed’s 27-year-old sister, Mariam Ahmed, said her younger brother cooperated with the FBI during interrogations leading up to his arrest. The agents, she said, promised not to arrest her brother if he cooperated.

“They broke broke every single promise,” said Mariam Ahmed, who lives in Karachi, Pakistan.

Ahmed’s sister said she hopes Duffey will show some leniency on her brother because of the harsh conditions he has already endured at the penitentiary. “To me, he’s already suffered enough,” she said.

During his time at the penitientiary, her brother has memorized the Quran and strengthened his faith, she said.

Ahmed was convicted of conspiring to provide material support to terrorism in the United States and overseas.

Federal prosecutors said Ahmed and Sadequee went to Washington in 2005 and took videos of area landmarks that wound up on the computers of two men later convicted of terorrism charges in Great Britain. Prosecutors said Ahmed and Sadequee took the videos to earn the respect of terrorists overseas by showing how close they could get to potential targets of attack.

Prosecutors also said Ahmed recruited other men to go with him to join a terrorist training facility in Pakistan in the summer of 2005.

Martin, Ahmed’s lawyer, countered that his client never committed an act of terror. Ahmed was an impressionable, immature college student who fell prey to propagandist, extremist Websites and, while he talked big, never acted on any of his plans, Martin said.

Ahmed waived his right to a jury trial so he could give his closing argument. During his allotted 45 minutes, he recited from the Quran in Arabic and told Duffey that using U.S. laws to defend himself would put him in rebellion against God.

You'll play faster at UGA or Bama. Someone that plays CB at either of those schools will be getting arrested any day now.

Finishing in the top 5 only gets you...hmmm....a 5th place regular season nod. Winning a national title is what its all about. Take your winning percentages and your top 5 finishes to the bank and see what its worth. About the minimum wage you make raking leaves for Sweet Water Landscape out of Athens. This blog is garbage and I haven't seen one good post ABOUT football. This is simply a playground for name calling and stone throwing. Its all good for the rivalry but let's smart it up a bit. Does anyone know for sure if Ayers is leaning towards Tech and is he as good as advertised? I think UGA or Bama has a more pressing need for an immediate impact defensive player in Ayers and Burnett and company already fill the slots for at least two more years. I hope he comes to GT but it won't be the end of the world and make UGA, GT, or Bama any less competitive if he doesn't. Good luck in your decision son.

PS: I'm sending Will Ferrell over to your house this weekend to film a pilot in your honor. Compliments of a real powerhouse that you should consider. :)

i honestly would like to know how UGA would do against an ACC schedule? Since they lost to GT, they would definetly lose to UVA, UNC, FSU, VT

Tech in the SEC, thats the funniest thing ive ever heard, winning 7 or 8 games! Theres not fricking way, maybe 3 or 4 games. Vandy, ol miss, ken., if these teams have down years. But mose years they, GT, would fight Vandy for the bottom of the league. What a bunch of losers!!!

Grinch: Dimwit, we all know that if Ayers and all of the top 50 players in the US go to UGA, there will still be no nat champ. Never has more talent gone wasted than at UGA. How is it possible ?
Since you're tight with Jennifer Anniston, why aren't you with her or do you just keep magazines with her photos under your bed ?

I sat at the varsity looking over at tech's so called stadium friday night, that place is totally shameful, the city of atlanta should feel very embarassed, someone please tear this place down, I can now see why they can't get fans there, looks like a hard cruel place, reminds me of prison yard.

Georgia has had two good years in the last 28, no national championship, and lost to Florida in 16 of the last 19 years. Even Tennessee has been more relevent during that time. Texas, Oklahoma, LSU, Florida, Alabama, Clemson, Michigan, Ohio state, Miami, Florida State, Penn State, Georgia Tech, USC, BYU, Colorado and Nebraska all won championships in those 28 years. Georgia's proud football tradition isn't as storied as you may think.

Bama has had one good year in the last 15, no championship, so how exactly does saying going to Bama is going to assure someone of playing for championships. Bama is just as likely to be on probation as they are to win a championship in the next 3 years.

Huh - the biggest bust of 2008 was the Preseason 2008 BCS National Champion Uga Bulldogs!

As far as calling timeouts go....only the weakminded forget whinin'richt calling a timeout seconds before the half when he should have let the clock run out and gone in to regroup.

"H.S Coach"- I coached many years at the middle school level and assisted at high school on Friday nights and during the week when our season was over. The high school coaches dive headfirst into their programs and after the season and school year, they are more into family time than arguing on blogs. What school do you coach for? I teach school as well.

and lostdog, why will uga play defense this year as opposed to last? because you sent Rome to GMU? or because Willie will be better? Johnson plays chess while Richt and Willie play pick up stix. why else would tech win with 2 star players when ugag had two first round dicks?

Tech won. Both teams played terrible defense. UGA got beat. Tech had a great second half and UGA could not tackle anyone, period. Tech fans should be happy for one year. UGA will not underestimate Tech again. LSU showed how to play defense against Tech's offense. I believe everyone will be watching that film and Tech will have a much harder time moving the ball, especially if they can't throw the ball. This year should be fun for both teams. UGA will play defense thhis year!

Willy,

You'd rather keep Tech's underrated record the past 10 years instead of UGA's overrated record over the same time frame? Rrrrriiiggghhhttt.

Willy,

So you would rather have Tech's underrated record the last 10 years instead of UGA's overrated one?

Tide,

Thats very true. It became just another game which was boring. Thats why i'm actually happy that Tech has got better. Auburn vs UGA is the oldest rivalry in the south, which is why that is still around although even that has lost its touch, florida obviously is a huge game. I get tired of hearing that its not fair playing down there because when i go down the the UGA fans out number the UF fans. So we have no excuse.
