Georgia, Auburn negate Tech’s edge for Ayers

By DARRYL MAXIE / dmaxie@ajc.com

The past week has cleared a few things up for South Paulding cornerback Ryan Ayers, and for those who had perceived Georgia Tech is his favorite school.

Visits to Auburn and Georgia have leveled the playing field, which is completely natural for somebody who had only visited one school. Ayers, a 5-foot-10, 175-pound rising senior, told ugasports.com that his mind is “completely open.”

He’s looking for a place where he can fit in. Florida, for instance, might not be that place after Ayers studied their roster.

“I do not know if I want to visit Florida anymore,” he said. “I think they may be full at cornerback.”

Alabama and South Carolina are among the more recent schools to offer Ayers. Georgia and Georgia Tech both have, too. Ayers said he would trim his list once he sees some more schools.

Yeah, Florida may be full but Coach Meyer will tell you that you can step on the field and start today and then you’ll sit for a few years. I’ve seen him do it several times to kids.

Grinch: Tech certainly has the edge over Ugag and Auburn. Whipped both of them on the field recently (45-42, 23-14). Tech will give him better coaching, an incomparably better education, and with where Paul Johnson is going to lead us, a better chance at championships. Tech is on the way up, Ugag and Auburn are on the way down. But, good luck wherever he chooses.

I have a 5′2″ 75 lb. kid on my little league team that is fast. Can we start talking about this kid and his recrutment to one of these school? It never too early is it? Ayers just pick a school for your future education in the oft chance that 5′10″ aint gonna be big enough for the NFL. I sure you are fast enough to cover Calvin Johnson but Calvin is 6′5″ you have no chance but a bad thrown ball. Read your books, pass your classes, and get ready to have to get a real job.

Tech may draw a small crowd but in that crowd are pro scouts, press and easy access to people concern about his future including his parents and friends. The airport is 15 minutes for the parking place at the stadium. The Falcons on those Thursday games can practically walk over to the stadium and don’t have a game till Sunday even if it is out of town so they send five guys instead of just one. And if you just happen not to make the pros which I don’t think is a problem, you have gone to a school that has more employers than employees that will recognize your contribution. Think about it.

HS Coach yes, UGA put us to task in the first half. Our mistakes and your good play had us in a hole, but we came out of the locker room PISSED and took it to your DAWGS and ran up and down the field on Willie’s D. You have to agree when you check the stats. You guys were lucky to escape Kentucky with a win but Tech didn’t give you that chance to win in the end. PS Friday Night is GOD in the South for FOOTBALL. High school football on friday night draws more fans than all the colleges do on Saturday. Thursday Night is great for many Tech Fans because we have JOBS in the city and can leave work and go to the game. Pro Baseball, Basketball, and Hockey seem to play any day of the week so why not football? Downtown Atlanta on TV Thursday nights looks great too. Thursday’s game is the only game in town but Saturday TV is full of games on how many stations. Everybody that wants football will watch Thursday night game to start the weekend off right. NATIONAL EXPOSURE right? Isn’t that what you say you get a uga? Well, that also happens on THURSDAY too.

Robert,

I would have to agree with you on Athens. I went to one UGA game with a dog friend of mine. Pretty stadium, nice quintessential college campus, and I think downtown Athens is beautiful. I’ve gone there on non football weekends for business. Very cool college town and going out downtown is incredibly cheap and fun. It seems like drinking and eating in downtown Athens is half of what it costs to do the same in Atlanta.

I’ve got nothing against Tech either. It is certainly a fine institution and I like watching Tech play nowadays because I’ve always been a fan of option football going all the way back to the days of the wishbone at Bama. The only negative about Tech is its proximity to downtown Atlanta and urban blight, crime, etc. I haven’t yet been to a game at Tech but I would like to go to a Thursday night game there. Nothing wrong with playing on Thursday nights. You’ve got the entire national spotlight to yourself and that kind of exposure is huge. I went to a Thursday night game in Columbia 3-4 years ago with an Auburn buddy when Auburn was ranked no.1. Had a blast and I hope they keep broadcasting bcs conference teams on Thursday night.

If we’re talking about lucky, you can look at GT’s schedule and see 5 wins that were all 4 points or less and some would call that luck. And by looking at the stats UGA whipped GT pretty good in that game as well with over 400 yards passing.

I actually think that Paul Johnson is a heck of a coach. He’s brought a swagger to GT that I have not seen in years. I do wonder if you guys will be able to pull in another back the caliber of Dwyer. He’s a special talent that has the possibility to go in the first round.

Wareagle 77,

Keep hoping my friend. If all you can do is hope that Bama gets in trouble then that is a sad indictment of where your program is at. BTW, did you hear the news about the no. 1 cornerback in the nation committing to Bama yesterday?

The textbook “scandal” if people want to call it that is indeed a lot of ado about pretty much nothing. What’s funny is that about half the textbook violations were unintentional. Students were getting course materials for a course that the professors recommended in their syllabuses but were not required. According to NCAA rules you can only get course materials that are “required”. But you cannot get additional materials that the professor recommends such as a copy of Moby Dick that an English prof may recommend for his English Lit class but he doesn’t require it.
The other half of the violations is where several athletes across several sports figured out that there was a loophole in the textbook distribution program and were getting some textbooks for classes they weren’t taking in order to give books to a friend or girlfriends that were having trouble paying for their books. Clearly this is gaming the system but no competitive advantage was gained. In all cases the athletes weren’t making money, they weren’t taking the books back and getting things like sweatshirts or clothing etc. at the bookstore. They were just getting books to help out classmates. Still wrong of course.

Anyway, the school caught it, immediately self reported, suspended the 5 football players involved for 4 or 5 games until the NCAA said they could play again, took action against the other athletes, and took action against the bookstore managers for not catching this loophole and for not knowing that athletes could only get required course materials only and not recommended course materials.
Obviously there wasn’t any intentional cheating and no competitive advantage was gained, no money exchanged hands, etc. But the school should have been more on top of little things like this. I think we’ve just spent a lot more time focusing on rogue boosters and the like and didn’t “mind the store” so to speak on seemingly smaller matters like this.

The general consensus is that the penalty will be secondary violations and a slap on the wrist since the school handled it so well. The worst case scenario seems to be a year of probation and 2-4 scholarships lost over a 2 year time frame which wouldn’t be a big deal at all.

As a matter of fact were they not on ESPN a few times last year. If you ever attended one of those Thursday night games they are crazy. Keep in mind those Tech people only have about 14,000 students compared to what 35,000 of you mutts. UGA is a mediocre program plane and simple that plays in an awesome conference so you guys get additional coverage because of programs you are playing like UF and LSU and Bama. Tide Rising, nice synopsis. I like the concise nature of the issue. I have to say that I believe you are 95% correct in everything you said. The only error, however, is a pretty good size mistake, which changes the penalty phase sizably. I am fairly sure that the NCAA have found that the accused students WERE making money on the exchanges. I, like you, had thought the same as you until recently. This is why the investigation is taking so long to complete. It also increases the chances of a much more severe penalty if it is proven to be accurate. This violation, along with your last one, tags along the line that nobody likes to hear, “lack of institutional control”.

I have a tremendous amount of friends over at Bama and do not wish them any major problems, but I can’t help feeling, like the NCAA, that Saban was aware of these issues.

War Eagle 77,

It was thoroughly investigated and it was clearly and plainly found that not one of the players benefited monetarily. Receipts and a very thorough investigation showed that none of them traded the textbooks back in for clothing, etc at the bookstore. This was pretty clear in the evidence. The NCAA takes a long time just because its what they do. Heck, they’ve been investigating the Reggie Bush thing at USC for over 3 years now and are nowhere near a conclusion on that. When we got slammed in 2002 it was for stuff that happened in the late 90s.

In the most egregious texbook case which was Bowling Green there were 60 something athletes involved and many of them were making money off the textbooks. The school didn’t uncover this themselves and when it was brought to light the school dragged its feet on it and if I remember correctly they may have even tried to initially cover it up. Despite all this they were only penalized something small such as 4 schollies lost over 2 years.

There was one other textbook case I don’t remember who but the university in that case was penalized 2 schollies I think.

We won’t be hit with “lack of institutional control” either. That was already said in the letter from the NCAA. However, we could potentially be hit with “failure to monitor” which is a major violation. I just doubt that this will happen though since Bama was so proactive in discovering the problem, immediately self reporting it, punishing the people and athletes involved, and correcting the problem. We did everything we were supposed to do so my guess is either a slap on the wrist or worst case scenario a year of probation and 2-4 schollies lost based on recent cases.

Go Gators,

I got nothing against the dawgs or the gators. I try to stay neutral in that dispute. But it is kinda funny seeing you calling timeout on them.

Hey H.S. Coach – you are the moron….Tech was on TV 10 times last year in regular season. Learn to read and then you can check YOUR facts!

GT,

you’re an idiot. The thursday night games the falcons can walk to Georgia Tech? Do u think they live at the dome? Most falcons players and coaches dont even live inside the perimeter. Did you forget that the practice facility is Flowery Branch. These GT fans that dont really know anything about football are getting annoying.

Go Gators,

Considering UGA is in the top 10 in wins and winning percentage over the last 10 years most sane people would say they are more than a mediocre program. Also, they’ve finished in the top 5 several times. Something most programs can only dream of.

And yeah GT can provide a great education but when u pick a school you also want to live the college life. GT is 85% male. What male in their right mind would want to live there. No thanks, put me in athens or for that matter anywhere else.

Alright genius. We were talking about “national” exposure. Ray/Com, ESPN 360, and ESPNU are not national games. Thanks for playing.

HS Coach, so you are saying UGA is like the Braves then? Always overhyped and never can deliver…maybe thats the reason they don’t get a lot of love from the national media. Maybe mediocre is the wrong word…irrelevant would be better…

I used to think that Bama fans were unrealistic but I think Tech takes the cake. Never heard from you guys nor did anybody else in the country till you beat UGA once in eight years. Now you think your gonna win a NC. Nobody considers Tech a big time football school. If don’t believe me look at their recruiting ranks the last five to ten years. Ha ha hahahahahahahah! Horrible!!!!!!

SEC, i believe that GT’s point was NOT about the Falcon players walking to the dome…the Tech players can, practically, walk to Falcon games on Sundays… not REALLY calling you out as much as I’m standin up for a fellow Tech fan. In this instance, the idiocy, is yours, however.

Diamond dawgs,

If you want to compare recuiting rankings then go ahead, those rankings are garbage, take UGA, top 5 top 10 every year but where are all your titles? oh yeah 1980…

How is finishing in the top 5 overhyped? So by your definition UF was overhyped every year they haven’t won a title since 1992? UGA just haven’t caught the breaks nor created their own.

Diamond Dawg, and, yet we beat your pups with lesser players in your own stadium! In reference to your assertion that we haven’t been here AND are insignificant, we’ve been here the whole time and we have the most recent hardware to suggest otherwise in the other matter.

Overhyped=preseason ranked #1

As for catching breaks, yeah they caught a few we Bama broke them in the first half and cruised to victory playing there JV kids in the 2nd half, another break was the breaking by Florida of there little dance in the endzone backs…oh yeah TIMEOUT and when the Tech running backs broke it off on them in the third quarter, I digress…Preseason #1=Overhyped just like the Braves, but irrelevant is by far the best way to describe them nationally as well as in the SEC.

Falcons on those Thursday games can practically walk over to the stadium and don’t have a game till Sunday even if it is out of town so they send five guys instead of just one.

Where in there does it look like the Tech players go there. “even if its out of town”

now it goes to you as well

I am really confused about Falcon walking to Tech games on Thursday, most of the guys live in Duluth which is about 20 mins from Tech and the practice in Flowery Branch so who is walking where?? I will say I have gone with friends to some Tech thursday night games and it does have a great atmosphere for a school with 14,000 kids in the middle of a major city.

Go Gators,

So you’re saying that UF was overhyped in 2007 when they were preseason #3 and finished outside the top 10?
