Alabama gets top cornerback Milliner

By DARRYL MAXIE / dmaxie@ajc.com

DeMarcus Milliner, the nation’s top cornerback prospect according to at least two recruiting services, committed to Alabama today.

Georgia had hoped to beat the Crimson Tide in its own state, as did Clemson, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma and Tennessee. Auburn also had hopes of knocking off its archrival for the 6-foot-1, 180-pound speedster. But at his news conference at Stanhope Elmore High in Millbrook, Ala. — just north of Montgomery — Milliner cited a strong relationship with Tide assistant Kirby Smart and said the other schools didn’t have a chance.

“I know where I have wanted to go for a long time,” he said.

Another day… another top recruit committs to ‘Bama. Is this really a headline? Maybe if he committed to a lousy school like UGAy or Allbarn it might have been.

The Gators already had 2 each top ten safeties and cornerbacks committed for 2010, and they’re loaded 3 and 4 deep already at those positions for 2009, so the competition at those positions would be tough in 2010 for any playing time as a true freshman.
Good luck to him.

hey sweethome, maibe u shoud correcks this stuph on a english blog, this is FOOTBALL. We not hea to learnet no english.

BTW, did we even ever offer the kid and did he even visit us? So how do we lose out on somebody that we never even attempted to get? I mean we probably won’t offer 70 of the top 100 players in the country so does that mean we’re losing out on all these players?

Shocker (sarcasm)

June 4th, 2009
5:29 pm

Anyone who has been reading the recruiting sites knows that this kid was going to Alabama for a long time. UGA truly wasn’t even in the picture, and Dawg fans didn’t even have their hopes up. The kid’s an Alabama homer and there’s nothing wrong with that. Lots of kids stay home across the country and play for the home school. Offering a kid doesn’t mean that you necessarily expect to get him. You offer, try to spark a new love in the kid, and if it doesn’t work, move on. That’s recruiting. What’s missing in this article is a sense of perspective in the writing. Darryl Maxie, sir, the title to this article is truly sensationalist. For someone trying to earn a spot on this website in the highly competitive news industry, I would seriously think about who’s your bread and butter in ATL. Yes, there are fans from all over, but Dawg fans outnumber them greatly. This type of creating a story is not reporting. It makes you come across as ignorant in the recruiting arena you’re supposed to be specializing in, and doesn’t garner any long term respect from the readers. Kindly suggestion: you may want to think about nurturing a relationship with your readers to keep them coming back for more, rather than provoking them to cynicism when they see an article written by you.

On another note: Nachos. Another fine example of Alabama grace and class.

Really?

June 4th, 2009
5:31 pm

Hey Darryl, I know you may not write headlines but you should probably become a little more educated on this recruiting thing. Milliner has been a lock to go to Alabama for a long time now and Georgia has never had a realistic thought of landing him. He and his family have had a long time relationship with Bama DC Kirby Smart for quite a while and his ultimate college destination has never been in doubt.

This info, like a lot of other info in stories similar to it such as your Gary Peters story from the other day, is really not that hard to find. Reporting that Gary Peters favors Bama over Georgia is ridiculous because Peters doesn’t even have a commitable offer from UGA (although he’s practically begged for one for quite some time now). But I’m guessing that using headlines like you have is part of your strategy to get idiots like myself to view the story and then subsequently comment on it. So I guess shame on both of us.

I love the Utes comment…think about georgia fans, you lost to GT who is alot worse than Utah. We were up 31-0 at half against yall…we havent won a SEC championship since 1999, but we have won more than anyone except Florida i believe. Sabans been here 2 years and we are a top 5 team in the nation, Richt has been at UGA for several years and has had one year in which they contended for a NC. Alabama is on the rise, Georgia is stagnant. Florida vs Bama in the SEC championship will be a common theme in the next 5 years…get use to it

Robert,

I’m not that worried about it. Richt always takes his time to offer. Rodney knows what he’s doing. Recruiting class rankings are not an exact science and dont really mean anything. Lack of talent in GA or at UGA has never been an issue. Saban is just doing what he’s always done….bringing in great recruits. That doesnt mean that Richt and Rodney wont put together a great class as well.

Vandy, the fact that CMR takes his time to offer makes me a little nervous. Times are changing. Kids like to get it over with and it seems like more and more of the top recruits like it when schools offer them early. Schools are filling in their recruiting needs earlier and earlier. Think about how many recruits who felt not wanted by schools because they didnt get that early interest. I agree though, Rodney does know what he is doing and we will get a great class Im sure, it just seems that we have been stagnant lately and getting left behind could happen rather swiftly in this league. It may take just one below-par class of recruits…

Sources tell me that his grades are borderline at best to get in college….Bama fans can thank UGA graduate Kirby Smart for all the recruits they get…but you better thank him fast cause he’ll be gone to Texas next year to work with his best friend Will Muschamp….you can count on that happening.Let’s see what Saban does with all these recruits he’s getting…his past record shows major underachieving by all the teams he coaches..he’s never been good at coaching them up very well..i.e. SEC Championship game and Utah game.

This story is much to do about nothing. If you follow recruiting at all, you know that this kid was not a big priority for UGA. Congrats to Bama on the pick-up. For some of you folks, you really need to seek some help. You are either really sick or really stupid. Anyway, let the kids enjoy the process and let the fans enjoy their teams—college football is a game by the way. GO DAWGS!!

I can’t understand why fans are so upset about our slow start in recruiting this year. CMR has brought in several very good classes in a row and I expect that the next class will be very good also. Alabama fans are deluded. They finally had a good year for the first time in a decade and all of a sudden they think they’re on top again. They couldn’t even beat a WAC team after they lost one O-lineman. Perhaps that will give them a clue as to what injuries can do to a team. I wouldn’t bet the house on it, though.

All of you elephant fans are a joke. You all want to poke your chest out like you have done something when the fact is you have not. The Gator Nation spanked your A$$ in the SEC Championship last year on OUR way to the National Championship victory. We WILL be 3 out of 4 in the National Championship game in 2010, leaving the elephants dazed and confused once again. Your savior Satan could not win the 2010 National Title if he had to…… well he may very well have to since the elephant fans think they are entitled to the beloved National Title and will fire Satan. What a joke, a dynasty from the rock ages that can’t compete anymore! The Gator Nation is now the Dynasty program that you all long for. You all want to crack on the Dawgs like you have a hold on them when you have lost 3 of the last 4. As I said, elephant fans are a joke! Turkey: I agree with you. We had Kirby Smart on staff here at UGA but not on the defensive side. They should have fired WM and hired Kirby as our DC. But until the defense continues to get worse and pressure mounts on MR, he will not do anything. I think what will eventually happen is Damon Evans will have to step in an tell Richt to WM.

This is typical Alabama chest pounding. They have 1 decent year and all of a sudden they are king of college football. Try winning 10 games EVERY YEAR like UGA or FLA, and maybe you can say something. These people are worse than UT fans. Come to think of it, that is really all they have in that state. My guess is LSU and Ole Miss will keep you out of the state of Georgia come December any way. I see about 8-4. And please, this top recruit garbage is getting old. They are high schoolers who have never played in front 80 or 90 thousand people. Let them prove it on the field.

Hard to reel in a recruit in Bama with Nick Saban there, although we do get one or two from time to time. We’re really excited to have William Green and Dee Finley who are going to contribute this year and I think will be future stars. Bama, like Georgia and of course Florida, always seem to have alot of really good talented players. So does La but it’s just as tough to get one out of there, probably tougher.

Not to worry—Saban will choke again with all this talent. He had a fluke title at lsu but will not win another. Georgia will win a national title before bama—mark it down. Georgia upsets Florida in Jax this year, wins the SEC east, and beats bama by 10 in the SEC title game. Richt wants big time payback after that loss to bama in 08.

Wow! Lotta smack talk going on here. Well, I guess we did have a couple of our fans start it with Nachos and Sweet Home Alabama. Seems these guys are pretty good at baiting the dawg fans and ya’ll just keep biting every time. Just ignore them.

Maxie and the AJC have done a really good job of sensationalizing stories that really aren’t stories to begin with. This is one of those stories.

The kid was born and bred an Alabama fan and the odds of somebody taking him out of state are about the same as the odds of me taking Angelina Jolie from Brad Pitt. The AJC beatwriter is just trying to make it out like Saban beat out Richt and everybody else for an undecided top level recruit.

I’m disappointed at the immediate smack talk from some of my Bama brethren but am also somewhat taken aback at the vitriolic hatred and inaccurate statements made back at the Bama nation by some of the responders. Everybody needs to just chill a little bit.

Anyway, it is an exciting pickup for my Tide. Its the 2nd year in a row we’ve picked up the nations top rated cornerback (the other Dre Kirkpatrick reports in the fall) so now we have a pair of 5 star cornerbacks. We also have another 5 star former recruit BJ Scott who is moving from offense to cornerback, we have a former 5 star Mark Barron competing to start at a safety spot and all the other guys on the 2 deep are all 4 star recruits. Back to back consensus number one recruiting classes and another stellar start to the 2010 class which will surely end up being a top 3 to top 5 class means the talent cupboard is getting real full.

I’m not going to flame at the dawg fans or anybody else. Well, maybe I’ll just razz the Auburn fans a bit. Auburn it looks like for the 3rd year in a row we are just absolutely dominating our cross state rivals in reeling in the talent. And we are absolutely loving it! Rols Tides!

Gator Growl,

William Green was a good pickup for UF. I’m still P.O. ed about it. I would have really liked to have had him as a good 3rd down rush defensive end. As for Dee Finley we never really had a shot at him. As a matter of fact most of us Bama fans were delighted that he went to the Gators instead of Auburn. For Pete’s sake the guy went to Auburn high school and Auburn still couldn’t get him to attend the hometown school, literally.

Darryl Maxie.Promotion from high school football to Terrence Moore replacement. AJC keeps its token and we get more of the same. A better title for this article would have been ‘State of Alabama top recruit decides to stay in state’. Then list the other competing schools that lost out. He’s from Alabama and he “knew where he wanted to go for a long time” and “the other schools did not have a chance”. I see the AJC has not changed one bit when it comes to UGA. PS- looks like it was a UGA guy who played integral part in the the recrutiing. Nice job Maxie Pad.
