Nation’s top CB will announce Thursday

By DARRYL MAXIE / dmaxie@ajc.com

DeMarcus Milliner of Millbrook, Ala., the nation’s No. 1-rated cornerback prospect according to rivals.com, will announce Thursday afternoon where he’s going to school. Georgia is among the schools hoping for good news.

Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss and Tennessee are the others. His high school coach, Jeff Foshee, said Milliner is tired of the recruiting process and wants to get it all over with.

“He is just tired of the process already. He is tired of the calls and the hoopla surrounding his recruitment,” Foshee told BamaOnLine.com. “He has made his decision and he doesn’t want to waste anyone else’s time by dragging it out longer.”

Rivals.com also listed Georgia Tech among the schools Milliner would choose from, but scout.com’s Rod MacKenzie says Tech isn’t in the picture.

Milliner is 6 feet 1 and 180 pounds now, but Foshee sees a lot of room for growth.

“I think in five years, you may be talking about him as an NFL prospect at safety if he grows like I think he can,” Foshee said. “He could be 6-foot-3, 220 pounds.”

I’ve not seen any evidence that he’s seriously considering Tech or that Tech is persuing him heavily, so I’de be shocked if he picked GT.

I highly doubt he’ll come to Tech, unfortunately. Fortunately, we already have a talented secondary. I see this guy staying in state, probably for Bama. Out of state: Maybe LSU. Auburn is still trying to rebuild and won’t contend for a while, so it’s not the smart choice for a top prospect. Ole Miss is up and coming, so they might have an outside shot at him.

Rivals shows he has interest in UGA but does not have an offer, and no mention of GT. I don’t see why UGA or GT are mentioned in the article. He will most likely be playing in the SEC West. Good luck to the kid.

Get a membership to rivals guys. He’s already contacted the Tide staff and is firmly committed to Alabama. Thursday at noon is nothing more than a formality.
—————

There is some pretty big news breaking on the recruiting trails this afternoon. DeMarcus Milliner, the cornerback prospect out of Milbrook, Alabama, will be announcing his collegiate decision Thursday afternoon at 1:00 PM. Milliner is a five-star prospect with both Rivals and Scout.com, and both recruiting services have him as the number one cornerback prospect in the country. Milliner is widely considered the top prep prospect in the state of Alabama, and his head coach is Jeff Foshee, a member of Alabama’s 1992 national championship team. It is widely and almost unanimously expected that Milliner will finally make his commitment to Alabama official.

Haha, he should go to UGA if he wants to be #1? Last I recall, UGA was preseason #1 but didn’t win the National Championship. Sure, he could go to UGA then. The real winners are those that has won actual titles.

dny1979, it seems Saban is unloading the pantry in the state of GA. Most recently, Ju’Wuan James. Austin Shephard, Blake Sims, Ronald Carswell… Any of those names ring a bell? Richt needs to be careful before he ends up like Tuberville and Fulmer.

dny1979

June 2nd, 2009
2:33 pm

BamaCLT. Yes. I know of them all. Juwan James was a pleasant surprise. Although, considering he and Shephard play HS ball together, it wasn’t all that hard to understand his commitment. Saban seems to see something in Carswell. He was one of those guys I wasn’t really expecting to see end up at Bama, but glad to have him on board. Blake Sims will be a great DB underneath CNS. He will not play QB. The competition there is way too strong and he is better suited in the secondary. All in all, a great bunch of guys from the state of UGA this year thus far.

With that said, the state of Ga is loaded this year. It’ll take more than Saban alone to unload the talent pantry in Ga this year. There’s just that many solid players. Which is a great thing for us since the in state talent is down this year, in terms of quantity. After the top 7 or 8 deep in state this year, the quality takes a big hit. The state of Georgia is deep this year.

Recruiting coverage and accuracy have taken a beating with the AJC since Maxie became the beat reporter. His often misleading lines, such as the first line in this story, challenge credibility. Neither Georgia or GT are considered players for the young man yet Maxie tries to make it a Georgia-GT battle. Puhleeeeez. Sort of like he tried to make Mack Brown a serious prospect for GT when Brown has clearly NEVER mentioned GT among his schools of primary interest. There’s a reason AJC circulation is 1/2 of what it was 7 years ago, and it ain’t all because of the internet, quality counts and accuracy matters.

Don’t any of you people listen to Paul Johnson. Those ratings are bull crap. He said there only a handful of ACTUAL 5 star recruits that may live up to it. He said you can’t rate them from HS to college play. Wayshaun Ealy is highly rated, yet he played all of this games in the weakest HIGH SCHOOL division in the state of GA.

Erk Russell once said, ” the good thing about recruiting is that they all come highly recommended”. Cooper Taylor the safety for GT, who will be playing the Wolf position this year, is the fastest player on the GT squad and he has the best vertical. Paul Johnson said he is the most athletic and Scout and Rivals only gave him 2 Star, and he is the guy who caused the fumble vs. FSU last year to win the game.

These ratings are BS…

This kid is going to Tennessee. Kiffin is going to make sure very early in the process that he shows he can march into Alabama turf and pick the best kid in the state and bring him north. UT told the kid to commit early to set the bar. Otherwise, he would just ignore the phone calls and wait until next year to announce.

Are you kidding GOTech610? You must be a student.

lower rated players can be very good, but there is a reason the teams that win usually have the highest rated recruiting classes. Teams that recruite a lot of top rated players have more depth. If a star goes out, a star comes in. Other teams replace with weaker depth. This matters late in games which is why in general UGA beats GT late in the game. Teams that send the most players to the NFL do not do so because they are good coaches, they do so because they bring in NFL caliber recruites. If a team with sub 10 recruiting ranks sends a lot to the NFL, then they clearly are doing a great job coaching.

I hate to break the news to the non-Bama fans here, but rest assure Milliner is Bama bound. Has been for a few months now. AU was never considered (as apparent that Milliner did not go to the Big Cat weekend.)

Milliner’s decision will unoffically open the new gym that Stanhope Elmore just built. It is brand spanking new, and it is gorgeous. I went by Stanhope and the anticipation is high. I talked to a couple of his teammates, and they definately know where Milliner is going, and I didn’t press the issue but one of the players made a interesting statement as he left to enter the new gym and he said without hesitation, “alot of fans will be ‘rolling’ with his committment.” You should be able to read between the lines.

In other words, Milliner will make official, what most Bama fans have known for months. Milliner will commit to the Tide this afternoon.

Top-rated cornerback commits to Alabama

Scout.com | Tuscaloosa News Archive Photo Demarcus Milliner (left), a top-ranked cornerback from Stanhope Elmore High School in Millbrook, Ala., has committed to Alabama. Alabama’s defensive coordinator Kirby Smart (pictured right with head coach Nick Saban during last season’s victory over LSU) helped recruit the defensive back to Tuscaloosa.
By Andrew Bone, Special to The Tuscaloosa News Published: Thursday, June 4, 2009 at 12:00 p.m.

MILLBROOK | Demarcus Milliner, rated a five-star cornerback and Scout.com’s No. 1 cornerback in the country, has pledged his services to the University of Alabama.

“I am going to be wearing that Crimson jersey,” Milliner reported before the scheduled press conference at his high school Thursday at 1 p.m.

“I love the tradition of the program. I will get a great education at Alabama. I will have a great opportunity for playing time. Those were some of the main reasons I decided to commit to Alabama.”

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound prospect chose Alabama over scholarship offers from several schools, including Auburn, Georgia, LSU and South Carolina. Alabama’s defensive coordinator, Kirby Smart, helped recruit the defensive back to Tuscaloosa.

Milliner finished the 2008 season with seven interceptions and returned two for touchdowns. He made a total of 57 tackles with 33 unassisted. He returned two punts for touchdowns and one kickoff returned for a touchdown as well.

Stanhope Elmore head coach Jeff Foshee, a former Alabama player, said, “He has so much range that he can cover a large amount of ground, and be dangerous from any part of the field. He’s basically the air traffic controller coming out of the defensive backfield.

“Demarcus can cover receivers and also be a sure tackler as well.”
