Top RB Lattimore rules out Georgia

By DARRYL MAXIE / dmaxie@ajc.com

Marcus Lattimore, rivals.com’s No. 2-rated running back prospect in the country, didn’t enjoy his visit to Athens and has excluded Georgia from his eight finalists.

“I have [whittled] it down to eight schools,” Lattimore told ugasports.com. “I do not have a leader and this is my official list — North Carolina, Alabama, South Carolina, Clemson, Penn State, Florida State, Maryland and Auburn.”

Lattimore, who had 30 touchdowns and 2,500 yards rushing for Byrnes High in Duncan, S.C., had considered Georgia one of his favorites until the visit changed his mind. He spent the past weekend at Auburn.

“When I went down there (Athens) I just didn’t feel comfortable and couldn’t see myself living there for four years,” he said.

The Dogs will redouble their efforts to land Mack Brown, the M.L. King running back who is thought by some to favor Florida ever so slightly. He is rivals.com’s No. 6-rated running back.

“They want me to come up and just hang out, and I think I am going to go either this week or next week, and chill with Caleb King and Reshad Jones,” Brown told ugasports.

We didn’t want him anyway. He isn’t good enough tocarry a clip board. He would never have played. He saw the writing on the wall. He was only using us to gain leverage to play at a smaller school. He would have rode the bench for 4 years. Better that he part ways now than when we sign Mack Brown. Who cares that we lost a 3rd rate RB when we have 3 stud QB’s. Who cares about a rb when we have the receiving corp that we have. etc, etc, etc,

With Ealeyoming in this year, plus all the runners we already have on hand, Lattimore made a good decision for himself in excluding UGA from his eight finalists. Maybe we can land Mack Brown, but if we don’t, it won’t exactly be the end of the world. In my opinion, we’re already loaded at tailback. We need a really good rush end.

And if you work hard enough and develop and grow your skills, you’ll have all the opportunity you want to go to the next level. This is Why Lattimore Isn't Going to UGA

June 1st, 2009
4:29 pm

This kid couldn’t see living in Athens for four years — but he can see living in Auburn or Clemson? Sorry folks but something doesn’t compute. A recruit choosing another program over UGA isn’t notable — kids have all sorts of things influencing their decisions — but it’s very rare for it to be Athens itself as the cause for a player to rule out the program.

If he were only listing schools in urban settings among his finalists, this might make sense. If he were only listing very tiny towns, perhaps that would make sense, too. But he’s got everything from Auburn, Alabama to Tuscaloosa to Chapel Hill to College Park, Maryland still in the running, so this is about something else. There are pros and cons to all of these places and tastes vary, but for life as a college student and athlete, Athens is pretty highly regarded. Certainly as much or more so than some of the other places he is considering.

So what’s really going on? There are a few possibilities about why the “rule out” and why it was so early in the process. One is that he may want the proverbial “start from day one” situation. This kid is highly rated and probably has that expectation in his mind. Well, no matter how good he is or thinks he is, he is not starting from day one at Georgia. Knowshon was just drafted in the 1st round and he redshirted. Georgia likes to redshirt runningbacks unless they can pick up blocking schemes and the overall offense very quickly. This kid can look at the depth chart and see that there is no UGA runningback beyond a sophomore. The starter this season is going to be Richard Samuels (sophomore), with Caleb King (sophomore) close behind. The guys behind them are Carlton Thomas (redshirt freshman) and Dontavious Jackson (redshirt freshman). And the highly touted Washaun Ealey (true freshman) has qualified and will be onboard. All of these players were highly touted coming out of high school and all are still very young. So if you are a highly rated high school tailback who will sign with a college in February, and you want to be “the man” as a college freshman, are you going to go to Georgia? I would think not — unless you are delusionally confidant that you would beat out all of the above guys who will already have 1-2 years in the program. My guess is that Lattimore will sign at one of the programs that has a junior or senior starting at tailback or an older group of runningbacks overall.

Another possibility is that he is looking at academic qualification issues, but if that’s the case, we’ll probably see UNC and Penn State fall off his list soon…they tend to be under the same internal requirements as UGA. Some of the other programs like Auburn, UT, or FSU that are…ahem…under less strict requirements…would be at an advantage. I don’t know anything about his academic situation, so this is just speculative.

Personally, my guess is that this has mostly to do with the depth chart situation.

Does anyone really think the academic requirements at UGA are above those required by the other schools listed? They all recruit the same players and accept them if they meet the NCAA minimum. UGA has some very easy majors unlike GT, Stanford, Notre Dame etc. Get over yourself..

This Is Why Lattimore Isn't Going to Tech

June 1st, 2009
4:51 pm

Georgia Tech would be a good choice for him except that no one is going to dislodge All American Jonathan Dwyer, who is only a junior. I have seen nothing to indicate that Dwyer plans to skip his senior year, and Tech’s top guys behind Dwyer would only be juniors by that point. So this kid Lattimore likely still winds up redshirted or with minimal playing time.

I just having a feeling that rankings have gone to this kid’s head and he’s going to go someplace where the coach will convince him that he just might get to be “the man” from day one….

The Academic Requirements Do Differ

June 1st, 2009
5:07 pm

Uh, yes…Georgia just like many other programs has it’s own admissions guidelines that are higher than the NCAA minimum, in academics (and in other areas….hence the reason a certain linebacker got his offer pulled and is now going to UT).

By the way, there are easier majors at all schools that the players are guided toward, including Georgia Tech (Here’s a little stat: as of last year, 83% of the junior/senior football players, 84% of the baseball players, and 65% of the basketball players at Tech were majoring in Management — compared to only 11% of the school as a whole….hmmm….I wonder why!! Just lots of aspiring businessmen? lol)

Bottom line is, UGA for a variety of reasons (one of which was the Jan Kemp suit and resulting regulations) has placed the bar higher than certain rival programs like UT and Auburn, which will still take anyone who can sign their name with an scribbled “x.” ;-)

Was enjoying the sniping until The Academic Requirement Do Differ made his slightly erroneous contribution. UGA has in fact made tremendous strides in its entrance requirements over the last couple of decades, for regular students, but not athletes, where hyprocisy abounds, there and elsewhere. Let’s face it, Ealey probably couldn’t qualify at a California junior college where you don’t even have to qualify, and for certain couldn’t qualify at UGA if he couldn’t tote a football, but by golly, there he is, accepted by UGA. So, get real about what academics standard truly exist at UGA and virtually every other school, too.

LOL.. If a kid meets the NCAA mins and is a highly rated recruit, UGA will take him and he can cruise with a joke of a major. UGA is no different than the other big programs.

Seems to me you didn’t explain the vast proportion of Tech athletes in that one major. So…Georgia, like every other comprehensive university, has liberal arts programs and everything else. How is that news? You seem to be impressed with the fact that Georgia Tech is an engineering/technical school — yet the vast majority of the athletes are majoring in general management, not a technical program! LoL… Have you checked the average SAT scores, etc. for Tech athletes compared to other programs, per chance? I don’t want to break this to you, but on average, an athlete at Tech is nowhere near the same as a typical student at Tech…hence the same hypocrisy you are accusing “the big programs” of engaging in must also be occuring at Georgia Tech!

Bottom line: If you truly have a top-tier educational institution AND all athletes must meet the same standards for admission and retention as the general student population — you will have a very nice program that wins perhaps 1 game a season….unless you play in a conference composed of like programs, such as the Ivy League. Tech isn’t impressing anyone with the academic prowess of its athletes…

Ryan

Not a Tech grad or fan. Just find it amusing some UGA fans think their football players are academically superior to those at Clemson, FSU, Auburn, UT and other schools. You recruit the same players. As for management at Tech, look at the curriculum. No comparison between it and the joke majors offered at UGA. Much more difficult for a kid to stay in school at Tech vs UGA. Just a fact. Forgot, you don’t like facts.

uga_b

At least Georgia’s majors involve the student actually going to class at UGA instead of those glass houses at Tech. UGA does have an academic board that has to give the okay to every student in addition to them meeting qualifying scores; hence the reason Jamar Chaney and Michael Grant had to go elsewhere. No athlete is held to the same admission standards but they do have to compete in class. Some just choose to do so on campus.

After having watched Lattimore play several times over the past 3 years, I’m surprised he’s rated as the #2 RB prospect in the country. He has gaudy stats attained playing on a very good team that gains a lot of yardage by spreading the field and throwing the ball all over the place, which creates huge running lanes. The kid is a good player, but he’s not even a top 20 RB, when considering the entire country.

I’m sure his disdain for UGA has less to do with Athens, the coaches, and the players, than with his prospects for starting immediately. If Tammy Bowden were still at Clempson, I’m sure Marcus could get the “first carry of the season” promise that resulted in such disaster for Clempson against Bama.

Ryan is pretty much on target. Unfortunately, however, over the years in order to remain reasonably athletically competitive Tech was virtually forced into adding majors that are less challenging than the majority of its majors. In the 1930’s, Tech had a School of Commerce that the Georgia alum dominated state legislative took away to curb Tech’s athletic competitiveness vis-a-vis its beloved UGA. And, it wasn’t until the 70’s that more general majors began to creep back into the school. In between the closest thing to a non-science major was Industrial Management, and compared to UGA’s Bachelor’s of Business Administration, it was a b*tch.
UGA’s overall standards are tighter than they once were, except for athletes, and the same is true for Tech. Most universities at the D-1 level have sold their academic integrity and souls in the name of sports.

To Ryan

Congratulations, Ryan, you win the “elitist” award of the day for your brilliant posts.

You seem to be one of those self-absorbed, lonely individuals who truly believe the world would be a much better place if only engineers were to be in existence. Actually, a snob such as yourself would only want georgia tech engineers to be in existence.

You appear angry that some individuals would dare to major in those disciplines that are beneath someone of your standing and as a result, you mock them. Let me ask you a few question, elistist:

* Do you, or those of your snobby friends who think like you, disdain the turf management majors when you’re playing golf?

* Do you harass those recreation majors when you (or possibly your children) are participating in sports/activities in your local community?

* Are you livid when some individuals willingly accept low pay and actually perform services such as “social work” for those in need?

* Early Childhood Education. So you’ve expanded your network of elitism to criticize teachers? Do you have the ability to teach up to 30 young individuals every day of the week? Do you hate your children’s teachers?

* African American studies. Are you a racist as well, Ryan?

* Fashion merchandising. Do you curse those who work in clothing stores as you browse the aisles to see if what they have is good enough to adorn your precious little self?

Do you like playing God? How do you feel about the elderly, the sick, the uneducated? How do you treat those minimum wage earners who prepare and serve you your food? How do you feel about manual laborers? Bad questions, I think it’s obvious.

Glad everything is perfect in your life now that you’re an engineer. I must apologize, though, you’re not an elitist, you’re a prick.

Seems to me Moreno was “only” running a 4.6 or 4.7 at the combine. Hmm, how did that turn out? Oh yeah, first RB chosen and the 12th overall pick. Of course, I’m sure you were much faster than Ealey back in the day, right?
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Hey Techies! I have a GREAT idea for filling up your stadium! Don’t shoo the bums out before the game–it’ll be a full house that way!!!

My Intro to Spanish class is far tougher than anything taught at UGA. Yesterday we learned how to say “Cinco de Mayo”, and “Dos Equis”.

eBuzz, I wish more posts were like yours. I totally agree, EVERYONE is guilty. No need to try and finger your rival when you’re doing the same thing. Doesn’t matter if one team has a player who steals an Ipod and another team has a player who steals a candy bar. It’s still stealing!!

Best of luck to the young man. Atleast he told the coaches early on instead of draggin it out. But the bulldog nation will be just fine as usual. Go Dawgs!!!!

THE DOGS PROBABLY WON’T WIN 6 GAMES THIS YEAR. THEY’RE MISSING TOO MANY PIECES TO THEIR PUZZLE. FIRST OF ALL THE OFFENSE GOING TO BE AVERAGE , SECONDLY THE DEFENSE SECONDARY IS WEAK AND FINALLY YOU DON’T HAVE A TEAM LEADER TOO LEAD YOU TO THE GEORGIA DOME FOR THE SEC CHAMPIONSHIP.

“if athens is so great, why do most ugag grads move to atlanta when the graduate??”

Because Atlanta is in dire need of graduates that know how to spell “they”, apparently.

It’s funny how 1 win in 8 tries has not helped rid the Georgia Tech nerds of their intrinsic insecurity. These folks simply cannot keep themselves away from any article about UGA. It must be strange to live like that… Perhaps if Georgia Tech could string six or seven straight wins in a row over UGA, it might begin to improve their self-esteem. Sadly, that’s never going to happen. :-)

KJ – That and the ATL homeland security needs help with terrorist cells at North Ave.

Nachos – the next blackout apparently will be when your mother lets all her “man friends” come hangout at your house.

Ryan – sounds like you were spurned by someone at UGA. sorry

Meh…I don’t see why signing a big name RB in 2010 is anything UGA fans should worry much about. Caleb King, Richard Samuel, Carlton Thomas, D. Jackson and Washaun Ealey should all be on the Dawgs roster for at least another 2 years. The only RB that could potentially be gone after next season is King, who I personally don’t see leaving early.

Athens is a dump, your Coach is a bore and cannot motivate players, your academics are a joke. I don’t understand why anyone ever goes to UGA.

I’m always amazed how fans react to a decision like this. Dont any of you people have/had kids this age? I refuse to have a meltdown or get offended because some 17 yr old doesnt like Athens. All of his schools except Maryland are good football schools, If he is making his choice based on the town that the campus is located in, however, only Chapel Hill on that list can hold a candle to Athens. If you cant have a good time in Athens, you arent trying very hard.

The person I really worry about is the “ex-Bulldog fan” above who suggested that the TECH campus was better than UGA. With a statement like that, you have to wonder if the dude has ever been either place. If the absolute worst part of Athens surrounded the campus (which of course it doesnt), then it might compare with the ghetto surrounding the Tech campus. The only thing Tech leads UGA in is crack houses and assaults.

Most of these athletes at UgA are majoring in some major like Recreation and Leisure Studies, Speech, etc. What a total joke! At tech, they wouldn’t last one semester, since there are no mickey mouse majors to keep athletes eligible for 3-4 years, then they go work fast food!
