Georgia surprises Newnan safety Ogletree

By DARRYL MAXIE / dmaxie@ajc.com

Newnan safety Alec Ogletree always has been big on the University of Miami. But when he actually had a chance to visit the school, they weren’t head and shoulders above a more nearby school.

“Georgia and Miami were about the same, to be honest. I was surprised, because when I went down to Miami I thought it was going to be one of the best things ever,” Ogletree told ugasports.com. “It was nice, but Georgia is just as nice too.”

Ogletree will also work at receiver during his senior season.

High school kid thinks a school should be the best thing ever? What are you going to study? Did you talk to a prof. or did you just talk to coaches and see the weightroom?

UGA has one of the nicest looking campuses in the country. An in-state kid might think that by going out-of-state he’s going to find something better, but it rarely happens.

Nice first post. Geez….. And this is probably an adult.

It’s a recruiting blog, genius. He’s a football player so you’re going to hear about football and facilities.

What a nerd.

He may not have a preference on distance from home but it sure would be much easier and far less expensive for his family and friends if he went to UGA. For those who couldn’t make it to Athens, all UGA games seem to get televised. UGA is a great school academically and the coaching staff is great support for a recruits’ personal growth. Hope he becomes a Dawg

Wonder if the new facilities UGA will have in 2 years puts UGA ahead of UM? Should be a great recruiting tool with all prospects.

I’ve been to both campuses. UM is a beautiful campus. If you like palm trees and all that then you would really like UM. But Athens I thought is a really nice campus also. The downtown Athens area has a really quintessential college town feel and personally I like it better than UM. A little change of seasons to me gives Athens the edge.

Miami is full of a bunch of transplanted yankees and Florida white trash. Its not for everybody. I wouldn’t be caught dead there.

CAMPUSES AT UGA AND UM ARE RICHER THAN SOME OTHERS SAY GT. I AM GOING TO LEVY A TAX ON UGA AND UM TO PROVIDE FUNDING FOR THE LESS FORTUNATE SCHOOLS SUCH AS GT. WATCH OUT

Go to Miami and major is spanish, because that’s what language you will need to speak to do anything there. I live in Naples FL and travel to Miami on occasions for buisness and it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Some areas are really nice, but others are just plain scary!!!!

It’s funny that someone that is so obsessed with a football rivalry that he would call himself Pi$$onaDawg would complain that a kid should be more concerned with academics than athletics. A comment like that really makes you look pathetic.

Of course, he’s going to like UGA, it’s the best school in the south. That’s why it’s called the University of Georgia. Our record speaks for itself….

Huh?, they are not transplanted yankees; there just yankees. The ones from Ohio are the worse because that is the ugliest state in the union with $hit a$$ football teams and ugly pale women who don’t get enough sun.

I don’t care how beautiful the campus is, how hard can this Kid hit a wide receiver? Can you stand up and drive a RB backwards? Does UGA need him? If so, lets us know what the chances are of him signing at UGA. You missed a great story on a kid that could be Georgia bound. Instead you told us what a beautiful campus UGA has, we alumni already know that! I really don’t care if UM has palm tree or not, unless I need a heart of palm salad or want some swamp cabbage and mullet for dinner! Give us the readers the story they want, tell about the kid and what he can do, if you want to throw in that he was impressed with the campus fine, just don’t miss the story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The reason I don’t write the stories is because of all the typos in the previous post. The AJC would have to hire an additional editor.

I am excited about this young man. He seems like a great kid. He has the build of Thomas Davis with more quickness. He will make a great SS. He will play at about 6′4 220. I really believe he is a future DAWG. He is part of a package deal. He has a twin brother that is a tackling machine at LB. He is a little undersized but so is Rennie Curran. I hope we sign both of them. Again, if you feel the need to make fun of a teenager then you really need to get a clue. The truth is that all the schools have a great deal to offer. All the schools have to be like Cloud 9 to a young man that is seeing them for the 1st time. I wish this kid the best.

Ok, I am a long time Bulldog fan and was slightly recruited by some schools coming out of high school. I had my mind made up to be a Marine though, so you know how dumb I am. I was promised to see the world and got to see the desert in the Gulf War for 3 tours. Anyway, I think that ANY kid who doesn’t come to Athens should go to Hawaii. Come on, the weather, the girls, the beaches, the girls, the views, the girls, and the girls.

have any of you ever walked down ocean blvd? spent a sunny afternoon on south beach? let’s say that the extracurricular activities and scenery in Miami is superior to Athens. Not that Athens is bad… but south beach is south beach. what 18yo male athlete wouldnt’ consider it at the least? and the campuses and schools are not that similar. Miami is much smaller and intimate than UGA – only 15,000 students at the U, including grad schools. Less than half the size of UGA.

What if he can do calculus? 1st you should know the UGA athletes have the best gpa in the SEC, period. And so what if he can do calculus? Just because you wear broken glasses and a pocket protector, and never got laid while you were in college doesn’t garauntee you’ll be a success in life.
