Eight Georgians make top 100 list

By DARRYL MAXIE / dmaxie@ajc.com

Eight Georgians are on The Sporting News’ top 100 recruits from the Class of 2010, and six have yet to make commitments.

The list is led by M.L. King running back Mack Brown, who’s No. 32. It includes Henry County receiver Markeith Ambles (No. 39), Douglass lineman Garrison Smith (No. 53), Heritage defensive back Garry Peters (No. 81), Gainesville receiver Tai-ler Jones (No. 82), Northview lineman Denzel McCoy (No. 89), Newnan defensive back Alec Ogletree (No. 91) and Jefferson County quarterback Barry Bostic (No. 98).

Of TSN’s top 100, only Jones (Stanford) and McCoy (Georgia Tech) have committed. But there are several non-Georgians on the list that Georgia Bulldogs fans would love to see in red and black and a couple that Tech fans would love to see in gold and white.

The entire list is available, starting at the link below:

WHAT’S going on with UGA 2010 recruiting? We are falling seriously behind SEC leaders. Fla had 3X as many top commitments as us. What’s going on?

12 National Titles 21 SEC Titles!!!

ATLDawg – I will tell you what is going on – Saban is kicking Richt’s butt in the state of Georgia.

UGA has decided to recruit more nationally – and as a result – they are taking more time to evaluate and offer. In the meantime – they are being outhustled for in state talent.

Brown in high on UGA – but Florida has an edge. UGA wants Lattimore.

Ambles has not been offered.

Smith – bama and gators are recruiting this kid heavy – could wind up at UGA.

Peters – UGA late to show this kid attention -= favors Bama.

Tailer Jones – same thing – wanted to be a dawg = waited for and offer- in the meantime – other schools offered and the emotional pull toward uga dissolved. By the time uga offered – the had mentally left and got excited about other schools. committed to Stanford.

McCoy – commited to GT.
GT is really focussing in state – uga thinks they are a national player – the gamble will fail as Bama, Auburn, gators and GT now feel that the state of georgia is wide open.

Ogletree will commit to Miami.

Bostic has not been offered.

Here is also some consideraton – think as an 17.18 year old:
– Bama and Gators totally kicked UGA’s butt on national prime time television in 2008.
– GT embarrassed UGA in a second half melt down.
– What teams are considered “HOT” going into 2009. UGA is not one of them – Bama, Gators and LSU are. NC, GT are for ACC.
– Perception of UGA is that it is a good program – but a program that has lost their momentum and not elite. probably peaked in 2005 –
- coaching staff under Martinez and Bobo is not a great selling point – does not inspire confidence.

Here are excerpts from an article ranking Caoch Richt:

Mark Richt – Georgia Bulldogs
Richt always has his teams at or near the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. But, that’s been the problem for Richt. His teams are consistently good, but not great. If Georgia catches some breaks, Richt can have them in the National Championship Game on any given year. But, so far, the Bulldogs have not gotten those breaks. Coming in to last season, the Dogs were pre-season number one with a first-round backfield. Five months later, the Bulldogs had been blown out by Alabama and Florida, lost to intra-state rival Georgia Tech for the first time since 2000, and lost 19 scholarship players to season-ending injuries. One of these years, Richt may put it all together. But, it will take more than intentional unsportsmanlike penalties and black jerseys to do it.

Sense the tone of how the national media feel about UGA?
The respect and honeymoon are over. The cat is out of the bag – UGA is not nationally elite – only a good regional team – the Michigan State of the SEC.

Kids sense this and Bama, Gators, LSU much more nationally respected – GT beats UGA with there first year head coach. UGA in trouble and will be lucky to win 8 games this year. The Donnan years have returned.

Bama Stan – enjoy your posts – and there is some truth to what you are saying – a team’s popularity is cyclical. The gators are no a roll – no doubt about it – but when Tebow leaves – look for them to come back to the pack.

As for 2009 win – loss – who knows? I would submit that the only team that is clearly a favorite will be Florida. As for LSU – they will be playing a lot of youth – and we will see what happens to this youth on the road.

As far as the rest of the schedule including OK State – UGA has as much or better talent than every team on the schedule. The key for UGA this year will be steady QB play, better defensive play – and staying away from injuries. We do those three things – we should finish top 10.

Recruiting wise- you are not looking at the Big Picture: UGA has only 13 to 15 scholarships to offer – and the staff is focussing on needs base.

Bama Stan – that’s why they play the game – who knows what will happen.

UGA is solid – we stay injury free – we will be just fine in 2009. As Fred said above – we are limited in scholarships for this year – our targets are incredibly talented – UGA should win at least 9 this year – could win 11. you may be correct – maybe we win only 8 – but I do know this – the 2009 team is hungry.

Enjoy your post.

Bama Stan – good post – but the Dawgs are focussed on only a few scholarships this year (13). A great year for other schools to offer deserving players an opportunity.

ATLDAWG – don’t panic – UGA will get some excellent players this year – it will be a very very quality class – but will lack quantity. I am very confident that by signing day – you will be impressed with what UGA has done. Put it this way – UGA’s class is almost 1/3 complete based on scholarhip numbers available. And the kids targeted are lights out!!!! UGA will be just fine.

As for 2009 – will be in great position to have yet another 10 win season – got to give Florida respect here – they could be just incredible – but do not count us out – upsets happen – and UGA will be ready to play!!!!!!

Atldawg – cool it dude – dawgs are in great shape – will have a top notch class – win a pile of games next year – setting up a great run when the Murray kid takes over. By the way – Logan Gray shows he is a gamer and SEC caliper QB. Dawgs in great shape dude!!!! Future looks great!!

When it is all said and done UGA will have another class near the top 10. The only reason it won’t for sure be a top ten class is because of the numbers. Also rankings aren’t everything. Aaron Curry from Wake was only offered by two schools, Wake and East Carolina. He turned out to be pretty good. Rankings are fun to look at and being near the top year after year certainly does not hurt but let’s not over react, espcially this early in the recruiting year.

Bama has got 2 and 3 star kids out of Georgia, I wouldn’t call that kicking Richt’s butt. Notice none of the top 100 have committed to Bama. BTW, do you know how many years of probation you got put on this time? Serious question, I’m hearing 2 yrs/2 schollys for the football team. You need to change your name to USCw when the NCAA come calling.

Bama Stan makes some good points. But dont forget that Bama was in the crapper just 3 years ago..things can change in a hurry. I dont buy that Saban is kicking Richt in GA. Bama always signs 1 or 2 from GA..lets see if this yr he does any better..I think not..

Even though I would certainly put Bama on any list of gold standard football programs based on history..I sure get sick of the old “12 natl title and 21 SEC titles” schtick The reality is that in the last 29 years they have won exactly 2 SEC titles and 1 natl title. Which is fewer SEC titles (by far) than any of the other SEC Big Six during that same period. Yes, Bama won one title since 1979, but so have GA and Tenn,, LSU and Fla have won two titles since then.. Auburn should have had one in 2004.

And lest anyone at Bama forget..3 of Bear’s six titles were less than unanimous to say the least.
Two of the natl titles caused the natl polls to change their system to include bowl games (AP in 65, UP in 73.) since Bama lost the bowl games and was obviously not the #1 team after the bowls had been played. Of those two questionable titles, one was a co- and neither would have happ under the new , fairer rules. The third tainted title..1978 co champ with USC despite the fact the teams had the same record AND USC beat them in Birmingham.. So thats 3 of Bear’s 6 titles that stink. Also for the most part, the whole time Bear was at Bana..he avoided playing Ga and Ga tech. They never played Fla either although back then Fla was awful most of the time..So Bama basically had 3 games decent games a year..Tenn, Auburn, LSU.. .their other annual games? Vandy, and both Miss schools. Since they played Auburn in Bhm every year, that means they played only one tough road game a year.. No wonder they won 10 straight or whatever it was. Maybe twice a decade they might play a tough non conf game, usually in Bhm, and they lost their share of those (Missouri, USC come immediately to mind).

So the morale of this story..yes, Bama was very good when the Bear was alive, but not as good as they think they were. But the Bear is dead (yes, bama fans, it’s true)..and since 1979, Baama has been no better than any other of the Big 6..

Despite all of that, Bama history is what it is.
Here is my list of Platinum college football programs based on all factors, not just the present:

Alabama/ No Dame/ Ohio St/ Michigan/ Nebraska/ Oklahoma/ Texas/ USC

Not quite platinum but Gold for sure: The other 5 of the SEC Big 6, Penn State, Miami, Fla State,

Bama fans are delusional if they think that Bama or Saban is “kicking Richt’s butt” in the state of Georgia recruiting. Only two of the recruits you have from Georgia were offered by UGA, and only one of them is rated above 3 stars. This kid also happens to be a OL and if he has any intelligence at all, then he’s looked at the UGA depth chart and figured that Bama is his best chance of playing anytime soon. I wish him the best at Bama, but won’t lose any sleep over the fact that he didn’t choose UGA.

As pointed out several times above, UGA will sign a very small class this year because of the available scholarships. With this in mind, Richt is doing to correct thing by offering only the best.

As for the myth that UF is invading Georgia and stealing the best recruits, you have to go back to the 2008 class to find the last recruit that CUM took from us (Omar Hunter) and he slipped thru our grasp due to a full class that year. I’d say that losing one recruit to a team that has won 2 national titles and is one of your biggest rivals isn’t too bad. You then have to consider the number of high quality recruits we’ve stolen from Alabama, Tenn, Florida and South Carolina over the last several years. In 2008 Georgia stole 2 from Alabama (Ben Jones), AJ Green from South Carolina, Pugh from NC and 3 from Florida (Walsh, Thomas). In 2009 UGA stole the top 2 from Tenn (Long, Marlon Brown), 1 from SC (Geathers), and 3 from Florida (Wooten, Charles and Murray). This year we’ve already got 2 from Florida.

When you recruit quality players who stay in your program, then you can’t sign 25 recruits in every class and end up ranked in the top 5 of recruiting EVERY year. Richt has finally developed depth and youth at every position and the future looks very bright for UGA. The UGA team that Richt inherited from Donnan had many depth issues. If you look at the current roster, you can pretty much setup a 3 deep of 4 or 5 star kids at every position… not to mention the class separation the Richt has developed. Just take a look at this offense two years off and keep in mind that this does not include any additional recruiting classes for 2 years……

QB Gray, Murray, Mettenburger
RB King, Jackson, Samuel, Thomas, Ealey
WR Brown, Wooten, Troope, King (assume Green leaves early)
TE White, Charles, Lynch
OL Anderson, Glenn, Harmon, Jones, Lee, Owens, Strickland, Sturdivant, Burnette, Geathers, Long

DT Tyson, Jones, Lott
DE Ball, Houston, Longo, Washington, Robinson
LB Dowtin, Robinson, White, Williams, Gilliard, Vasser
CB Boykin, Commings, Love, Smith
S Knox, Pugh, Rambo, Williams
K Walsh
P Butler

These aren’t just players who will have eligibility left in 2 years, they are players who were highly recruited by just about every school in the south who have played, started or who have just arrived.

I’m not saying that UGA doesn’t need to restock the cupboard for 2 years. I’m only pointing out that quality depth has been developed and not every kid will stay in state and sign with UGA if he wants to have an easy road to playing time.

Kudos to Richt and Garner for doing a great job. I’m not concerned that they’re getting their butts kicked in recruiting by anyone. I’m more concerned that they need to coach up the kids that they have.

BamaStan I’d say Bama isn’t looking so hot going into next year but that team oh gosh it slips my mind what they are called.. Let me check the scores from the bowl games.. ohhhhh yeah UTAH should be considered HOT then since they totally man handled BAMA in the bowl game. If Bama is all that then UTAH is God’s gift.

Hey Bama Stain……half the players Saban gets out of Georgia ..UGA didn’t even offer…..The reason Saban comes into Georgia is because the quality of good high school footabll players comming out of Alabama is pitiful and Saban knows it. The players are illiterate. Georgia gets exactly what they want and need out of the stae of Georgia……
You Bama fans have very short memories….where have you been the past ten years? You have one successful season and you think your team is God’s gift to the SEC and college football. Richt happens to hold a winning record coaching aganist Saban….so don’t think that he’s afraid to go head to head with him…even in recruiting.
Did you forget that Saban was your coach when you lost to La.Monroe and got blown out aganist Utah. How about that fake punt in the SEC Championship game that everyone in the stadium, and watching on TV knew was coming….I believe that Saban was coaching your team then… I heard one broadcaster say “What was Alabama thinking? That was absolutely the worst call that could have been made. Everyone saw it coming”…..even the cheerleaders.”
Here’s an exert I recently read in a national publication about Bama. “Alabama is presently experiencing an upturn in their football program ….but their fans need to beware…Nick Saban coached teams have always had a tendency to start strong and finish weak.If you look back at past Saban coached teams they always have a way of disapointing thier fan base by losing to teams with far inferior talent. Saban gets easily frustrated and has a history of running off good assistant coaches making it difficult to sustain any degree of consistency in his program.” Its always nice to hear what the national media thinks bout Alabama and your coach isn’t it? Looks like Bama will be back to the Suhla years as quick as you can say BEAR BRYANT IS DEAD!

Jason … are you aware that Utah finished #2 in the final polls? I’ll be the first to admit that no elite SEC school should EVER loose to Utah. Bama’s starters were elite… the backups… not so much. Utah pretty much showed the country as much. Most real Bama fans realized how desperately thin and young our team was last year. Though with the 85 scholarship rule that’s the case with most teams. UGA felt that with a rash of injuries and you saw how fast that wrecked their season. But after reading some of these posts I have to say it really cracks me up to read any smack from a UGA fan after the beat down we handed out in your stadium last year. What was that score? 31 – 0 at the half. UGA fans want to talk about what other teams (Utah UF) did to Bama last year… what the hell did your team do? As for the future of Alabama football…. just look at the last 3 recruiting classes… #10, #1, and #1. Last year was the first time in 30+ years Bama didn’t have a single player drafted in the NFL. That level of talent is exactly why LSU has controlled the west and Auburn was able to run off 6 straight on us. Times are a changing… get ready to hate Bama again, cause this isn’t that soft, depleted program SEC fans have become accustomed to. ROLL TIDE!!!!

Bama is doing very well in recruiting in Georgia this year because in the state of Alabama is down this
year in the number of top players in the state this year. The past 2 years have been excellent in terms
of talent in the state of Alabama for the crimson tide. Georgia will get its pick of the litter in state every year and will be good for many years to come. I am a fan of both teams and I like and respect
Saban but, I would take Mark Richt in a New York minute over Saban for 2 reasons: Richt is younger and you can trust want Richt says!!

Rising Tide..thats right..Im not saying Bama hasnt got a lot to be proud of.They have a great history, but as I said, it’s just not as good a you people like to pretend., I believe that considering everything, they are a platinum.program. Considering the past 30 yrs,.. not so much. ..a lot big holes in that history that dont often get pointed out..like how many of the first 6 championships were shared with 6 other teams back then when multiple teams were named champion, or how many were given the title 40 yrs later by some historian…thats all. It could easily be argued that since 1936, or 73 seasons of the poll era, Alabvma has won 3 legitimate titles.. and I did no rsch …that is all from the memory banks.

Hey Rising Tide….sure hope your coach sticks around long enough so you can give him sainthood like you did Bear. Nice job of hand picking the recruiting rankings that had Bama #1 last year…the consensus of all the polls did not have them at the #1 spot….I believe that it was #2, #3 or #4…..but hey your only trying to make a point ..right? Kind of like saying Bama blew Georgia out last year by only meantioning the half time score but failing to say they really only won by eleven because the Dawgs kicked Bama’s a$$ in the second half (with eight starters out with injuries)to make the final score respectable…you also need to be sure to meantion that Bama failed to show up in their bowl game last year and embarrassed themselves and the SEC on National TV. How about that last second win you had against LSU?…. a team the Dawgs man handled on the road……Or what about that last second win against Tulane you guys had last year?….A game where you were totally outplayed most of the game by a team with inferior talent…..just trying to set the record straight for you….don’t want to shade the truth to bulid Bama up like most of the Tide following does……Bubba..quit patting yoursef on the back and telling everyone how great you are…act like you’ve been their before….if you’re reaaly as good as you say other people will do the patting on the back for you…until them you come across like a little boy that hasn’t yet grown up!

As I said in an earlier post… UGA fans want to talk about what other teams did to Bama. As you pointed out in your post” last second win at LSU”… and “last second win against Tulane”. I couldn’t care less what GT or UF did to Jawja. All I know is we laid a good ol beat down on you guys. But it’s all in fun… relax. Just a little football smack. Roll Tide!!!!!!!

Hey Plainsman…I don’t remember seeing Andre Smith make a touch down or tackle last year. If Bama is so good they should have been able to easily replace him and no miss a beat. One man does not amake a team. As far as Auburn is concerned…I hope you do make it back and become competitive again. It will be tough this year though….I see Ole Miss making a big statement in the West and Nationally as well as LSU…… Georgia’s defense sucked last year (admittedly- due to major injuries to starters through out the line up and reserves) and we still only lost to Tech by three points. We had eight starters out for the game against Bama and still righted the ship at half time and lost by eleven. The Florida loss was the result of getting our a$$ whipped by a better team…no excuses.I like Georgias chances this year….nobody is expecting them to do anything….so if they do come through and have a good year it will be that much sweeter! So you Auburn fans need to polish up that recruiting limo and roll through Georgia….as always, we’ll let you have any one we don’t really want.Take all the 2& 3 star athletes you want.

Think about it..what else is coming out of Auburn these days but doubt.? They needed some buzz and the limo gave it to em. I also am in the minority when I say Chizik is exactly what they needed,..a hard ass. When Auburn has nasty boys on the OL, they win. No matter who the RB is. That was true under Dye, under Bowden, Under TT. The line lost their mojo and their mean streak here in the past 5 yrs and thats why TT had to go.

Dawg fans, relax, Georgia will land a top ten class this year just as they have done every year under CMR. Georgia will likely win ten games this year, the only problem being that they will lose to Fl. & Tech. Georgia is rapidly becoming the kind of team that all fans dread, a solid successful program with a coach who is one of the best recruiters in the nation but cannot defeat the schools two biggest rivals and despite winning ten games a year may never win another SEC championship much less a NC. Best of luck this year and by the way I do miss listening to Munson with Ga. friends. Oh yeah, I might add that about 90% of the schools in the country would love to be in Georgia’s position.

Someone please explain something to me. It has been mentioned that UGA has only 13 scholarships to give out this year. Because of that they can’t have a top 10 class. What difference does it make? If you had only 10 scholarship and signed 10 really good players, would that not rank as a top class that year? So what difference does it make how many spots are open on any given year? The logic behind that does not compute for me. Fill me in guru’s. Thanks

I’m no guru but the recruiting services rank the classes by the sum of the players ranking to some extent.

I think Rivals adds up the ranking for your top 20 players and uses that as their comparison total.

It would be virtually impossible to be top ranked with only 10-15 player recruits under that system, although you could still have an excellent class by any standards.

Ej Bama…thanks for the info. Still can’t get it thru my pea brain on why you can’t be recognized for a top recruiting class just because you don’t have the numbers to offer that particular year. This seems to me more of a marketing ploy rather than a serious study of the schools ability to recruit. Regardless of the numbers available. Should rank the schools two years after they enter school anyway. That would be a more worthwhile indicator of the coaches ability to recognize talent and coach them properly.
