I love how the bama fans come out of the woodwork and label auburn the biggest rednecks, barners, farmers, tractor pullers etc….Alabama is the definition of a classless redneck(as you can see by reading these posts), and until last year hasn’t been mentioned in a football sentence for about a decade. I know it has been a while since you had ANYTHING to brag about, but really grow up…Saban will leave you in the dust before you know it, I think he is even sick and tired of the Bamer fans.

Ted –

I’m not sure how you can twist the comments of these kids so that they agree with how you feel. As a 29 year old, I would think it is cheesy as can be if someone tried to get me interested in them with a limo, but when I was in high school, if I had 7 coaches from Auburn, Fla, wherever, all come to my school at the same time, especially in a stretch Hummer, I’d probably think it was the coolest things ever. These coaches go their point across and the kids schools they visited were impressed. If you want to keep telling yourself it’s tacky and lame, you might start believing these kids feel that way too, but from their direct quotes, that’s not the case.

Only time will tell how Chizik does. He’s done nothing but impress me so far with the way he’s handled himself, the staff he’s brought on and salvaging a decent recruiting class in a months time. We’ll see what happens on the field in the next 2-3 years though.

That maybe the tackiest thing I have ever seen. I expect most kids to say that was cool but they’ve really gotta be thinking what kind of program would do something so lame. Personally I wouldnt expect anything more from the most redneck, backwardass place in the SEC.

If you keep telling yourself that the coach you just hired that went 0-10 in his last 10 games is going to make you a powerhouse…I think you actually start to believe it. And if you believe that then you will surely convince yourself that this was a good move.

By the way, Tre Blackmon is the LAST AU player arrested…that was almost 3 years ago!

warhorse – please tell me why using a limo to a. get 7 coaches around at one time, b. garner some positive attention for the program and c. impress the kids they are recruiting(i.e. NOT YOU) is classless. I’d love to hear your answer on that.

First of all, let’s straighten some facts out. Richt couldn’t go to the event because he is the head coach. Only Asst. coaches were allowed to go in the limo, not the HEAD coach. That’s the rule! Secondly, the lame brain comment about the 880 SAT again doesn’t have the facts. In a recent report about average SAT scores, Auburn football players averages were above the blessed UF players. UF players actually were in the bottom 10 in the country.(Percy Harvin contributed to that, I’m sure with his Wonderlick score and intelligence of testin positive for marijuana at the NFL combine!!)
The AU coaches only talked to coaches, not players.
I think their enthusiasm is great. By the way, Tre Blackmon is the LAST AU player arrested…that was almost 3 years ago! GA, FL, AL, TN certainly can’t touch that! They’ve had 8-10 a year arrested.

Limos in recruiting as classless as the shirtless UT coaches. That is why Urban is separating his program from the league; he is recruiting athletes with an academic pitch that (every senior will graduate off the national championship team) attracts guys who are not classless thugs.

AS the news paper man in Alabama stated ”better the coaches ride in at limo then your recruits(BAMAS) get caught in or with a car! Little has been said in ajc. but it is well known the Alabama that bama gave cars to recruits the last two years and a letter is on the way from NCAA. In alabama a writer stated this would soon be coming out in AJC. I yes Tony has to sit on the story for how !

I take it that most people on this blog are middle aged folk, like myself. Limo and hummers don’t impress me, but to 17/18 yr old athletes, yes. It’s all about getting the staff’s face into the states high schools, something Tubbs neglected last couple of yrs. Great idea, need to come into ga as well.

I’ll add just one other point. Not one person(excluding the actual recruit) on this blog can say exactly what it is that sways a recruit to sign with one school vs another. If come next February, this little Limo Trip is STILL being talked about, it is very possible that a couple of recruits that are on the fence post, could make their final decision based on seeing one, or all of those 7 coaches talking to their Algebra or English teacher. For those of you that think that is hogwash, God bless ya, because that is real life. War Damn Eagle!

Charlotte Dawg – if you really think the limo is what is the final selling point, your looking at this all wrong. It’s not as if this is the coaches last attempt with these kids. This is partly to get their attention. It’s all part of the ….**ahem**…process. Recruiting is a marathon, not a sprint. This is just a way for the coaches to make an impression/build a relationship on the coaches/school, and to get the attention of the kids and say – here we are, and we’re gonna be back. And as silly as you think it is, just about every 18 year old out there would love to have this happen to them. If you don’t believe me, then you need to find some and ask them.

Um, no. It is pathetic. This is something I’d expect from Chan Gailey at GT or something when he was there. And if recruits come to your school b/c they schmoozed, wined and dined, and paraded around in a limo, then the Tigers can have them. What kind of an idiot teenager would fall for this?

Quite a few actually. Very sad. But I hope Georgia never is in such a state of flux that they have to go around the state with SUV limo’s. This is just silly!

Everyone is focusing too much on the limo. Imagine if you were a kid being recruited and a school sent 7 coaches to come to your school and watch you practice and sign autographs and take pictures with teachers, students, and administration. The recruits will have everyone telling them how awesome it was that they were the reason the school got this attention. Every kid wants to feel wanted, having a school send 7 coaches instead of one random coach that no one has ever heard of is a pretty big deal. I just wish Richt would have thought of this. This story has already been shown on Around the Horn and multiple other times on ESPN. Not too mention on the news all over Alabama, and now even Georgia.

Another little bit from Craig Sanders of Ariton High School:

“It was really exciting,” the 6-foot-4, 235-pound Sanders said. “I didn’t get to talk to them or anything because I was in the classroom. But we were looking out the window when their Hummer limo was coming down our street.

“It was pretty cool.”

An Alabama coach also visited Ariton High School Tuesday.

“They said Coach (Kirby) Smart came by but I didn’t ever see him,” Sanders said.

If any of you people think the coaches going out in a limo will make or break a recruit, you’re idiots. They can’t even talk to the players now. They are doing this to make a connection with the coaches at these schools and to be noticed. No one will argue that our coaches are facing an uphill battle recruiting in that state right now. Laugh all you want, but I have yet to hear any player or coach who’s school they’ve been to say anything negative about it. All the feedback has been pretty overwhelmingly positive. Remember, they’re going after 18 year old kids, not middle aged men who post on the ajc blog, so it’s pretty irrelevant what most of you think as long as the kids and the coaches like it. I think this sums up what they’re doing right here:

RON NELSON, Central High coach, Phenix City

On seeing the limo pull up:
“Everybody saw them coming. You knew where they were coming from.”

On meeting seven assistant coaches:
“I think the biggest thing is, and I really think what Coach (Gene) Chizik and them are trying to do, is a lot of times you come in to recruit and you meet one guy that recruits your area and you don’t know the other guys. Right now, we sat down for about an hour today, we had a chance to meet all seven of these guys and build a relationship with them. When I call, they’ll know who I am and vice versa.”

Was there a buzz around their arrival?
“They just happened to be here during a class change and I think a lot of kids saw them in the halls, so the buzz from that standpoint is there.”

On Auburn’s commitment to recruiting the state:
“I think they know that they’ve got to get some players from the state of Alabama. And I think that’s one of the big things they’re doing to make their presence known and to let people know that Auburn will recruit you.”
