War limo!!!

By DARRYL MAXIE/ dmaxie@ajc.com

You’ve gotta love this: Auburn coaches are pulling out all the stops in their efforts to land the best young talent in the state of Alabama. The newest tool: a white, stretch limo with the Auburn logo on the doors, and orange and blue flags flapping in the breeze. The first theater for battle is the city of Mobile.

The war cry — not War [expletive] Eagle, in this case, although somebody likely stood up and shouted that out of the sun roof — is “that Mobile’s a battleground, and we’re all here to stake our claim,” according to what Davidson High football coach Fred Riley told ESPN. The limo has already been by his school.

You can see it for yourself at the link below:

I don’t think we would want anybody who signed because of a limo. That is pretty lame but not a whole lot worse than the shirts off routine of UT. At least neither Tech or UGA have to pull these pathetic stunts.

I could well understand the consternation of UGA fans here…their coach can’t attend a players graduation yet AU coaches can show up at high schools all around their state in a flashy limo. Something doesn’t seem right…

Gator, I agree totally, the world has stopped turning. Kinda crazy in the big scheme of things. How is it possible that CMR cant go to a graduation ceremony, but AU coaches can act like pimps?

Hey bamafan, if you are not intelligent enough to know that “anything” is one word, please don’t embarass yourself with your lack of education in the world of recruiting. Come February of 2010 we will know what worked and what didn’t. Marketing 101, bad publicity is better than no publicity.

hey your right about georgia not pulling those stunts, they just worry about hiring people that are still on the loose after a triple-homicide. Good Call. Furthermore, the team itself seems to be concerned with recruiting convicts. again Good Call.

As for tech, there is just too many things I could say. So I’m not going to say anything.

Some people dont have to do much to show their lack of class, poor upbringing, and stupidity. Zach above is a good example. Anyone who would take a murder and insert it in a stupid argument about the new limo should be banned from this board. What does that have to do with anything? The closest Zach will ever get to owning a limo is if the Georgia grad who owns it hires him for a driver. Zach, too bad you couldnt make that 880 on your SAT that the average Auburn freshman did. Kennesaw State has higher academics. Troy has a better overall athletic program. No,, there hasnt been any crime committed in Auburn this week; except against those poor sheep in farming 101. SEC Fan….No offense but when BAMA hired Saban, they hired an experienced, championship winning coach who is one of the best recruiters in the country. Forgive our excitement about our program but he did lead us to an undefeated regular season, the SEC title game and a BCS Bowl game in year 2. Auburn hired a head coach with a 5-19 record who is resorting to gimmicks to get attention thinking this will actually attract recruits. What will attract these kids is what the team does on the field. AU was a hot mess last year and this year, well, they can only get better but 6-6 is probably realistic. If it is worse than that, you can guarantee that no good player will want to jump on a sinking ship, regardless of what kind of limo the coaches tour the state in.

Bless you

If any of you people think the coaches going out in a limo will make or break a recruit, you’re idiots. They can’t even talk to the players now. They are doing this to make a connection with the coaches at these schools and to be noticed. No one will argue that our coaches are facing an uphill battle recruiting in that state right now. Laugh all you want, but I have yet to hear any player or coach who’s school they’ve been to say anything negative about it. All the feedback has been pretty overwhelmingly positive. Remember, they’re going after 18 year old kids, not middle aged men who post on the ajc blog, so it’s pretty irrelevant what most of you think as long as the kids and the coaches like it. I think this sums up what they’re doing right here:

RON NELSON, Central High coach, Phenix City

On seeing the limo pull up:
“Everybody saw them coming. You knew where they were coming from.”

On meeting seven assistant coaches:
“I think the biggest thing is, and I really think what Coach (Gene) Chizik and them are trying to do, is a lot of times you come in to recruit and you meet one guy that recruits your area and you don’t know the other guys. Right now, we sat down for about an hour today, we had a chance to meet all seven of these guys and build a relationship with them. When I call, they’ll know who I am and vice versa.”

Was there a buzz around their arrival?
“They just happened to be here during a class change and I think a lot of kids saw them in the halls, so the buzz from that standpoint is there.”

On Auburn’s commitment to recruiting the state:
“I think they know that they’ve got to get some players from the state of Alabama. And I think that’s one of the big things they’re doing to make their presence known and to let people know that Auburn will recruit you.”

Another little bit from Craig Sanders of Ariton High School:

“It was really exciting,” the 6-foot-4, 235-pound Sanders said. “I didn’t get to talk to them or anything because I was in the classroom. But we were looking out the window when their Hummer limo was coming down our street.

“It was pretty cool.”

An Alabama coach also visited Ariton High School Tuesday.

“They said Coach (Kirby) Smart came by but I didn’t ever see him,” Sanders said.

Everyone is focusing too much on the limo. Imagine if you were a kid being recruited and a school sent 7 coaches to come to your school and watch you practice and sign autographs and take pictures with teachers, students, and administration. The recruits will have everyone telling them how awesome it was that they were the reason the school got this attention. Every kid wants to feel wanted, having a school send 7 coaches instead of one random coach that no one has ever heard of is a pretty big deal. I just wish Richt would have thought of this. This story has already been shown on Around the Horn and multiple other times on ESPN. Not too mention on the news all over Alabama, and now even Georgia.

Um, no. It is pathetic. This is something I’d expect from Chan Gailey at GT or something when he was there. And if recruits come to your school b/c they schmoozed, wined and dined, and paraded around in a limo, then the Tigers can have them. What kind of an idiot teenager would fall for this?

Quite a few actually. Very sad. But I hope Georgia never is in such a state of flux that they have to go around the state with SUV limo’s. This is just silly!

SEC

Charlotte Dawg – if you really think the limo is what is the final selling point, your looking at this all wrong. It’s not as if this is the coaches last attempt with these kids. This is partly to get their attention. It’s all part of the ….**ahem**…process. Recruiting is a marathon, not a sprint. This is just a way for the coaches to make an impression/build a relationship on the coaches/school, and to get the attention of the kids and say – here we are, and we’re gonna be back. And as silly as you think it is, just about every 18 year old out there would love to have this happen to them. If you don’t believe me, then you need to find some and ask them.

I’ll add just one other point. Not one person(excluding the actual recruit) on this blog can say exactly what it is that sways a recruit to sign with one school vs another. If come next February, this little Limo Trip is STILL being talked about, it is very possible that a couple of recruits that are on the fence post, could make their final decision based on seeing one, or all of those 7 coaches talking to their Algebra or English teacher. For those of you that think that is hogwash, God bless ya, because that is real life. War Damn Eagle!

I take it that most people on this blog are middle aged folk, like myself. Limo and hummers don’t impress me, but to 17/18 yr old athletes, yes. It’s all about getting the staff’s face into the states high schools, something Tubbs neglected last couple of yrs. Great idea, need to come into ga as well.

AS the news paper man in Alabama stated ”better the coaches ride in at limo then your recruits(BAMAS) get caught in or with a car! Little has been said in ajc. but it is well known the Alabama that bama gave cars to recruits the last two years and a letter is on the way from NCAA. In alabama a writer stated this would soon be coming out in AJC. I yes Tony has to sit on the story for how !

Limos in recruiting as classless as the shirtless UT coaches. That is why Urban is separating his program from the league; he is recruiting athletes with an academic pitch that (every senior will graduate off the national championship team) attracts guys who are not classless thugs.
