Moody: A matter of when, rather than if

By DARRYL MAXIE
dmaxie@ajc.com

The Dexter Moody Watch continues at Tennessee.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound linebacker from Emanuel County Institute in south Georgia has sent out all the right signals – which basically means (a) saying, “I’m going to [sign] as soon as they offer,” (b) making sure to get that quote in the Knoxville News-Sentinel just in case the Tennessee staff happened to be reading the local paper, and (c) showing up in Knoxville, not only for the Orange and White game, but also to get a little face time with the administration just in case (a) and (b) didn’t make it obvious.

But Moody seems to be on the backburner while Vol fans buzz about B.J. Coleman’s decision to leave the school because he didn’t feel he was getting a “fair shake” in the quarterback competition.

Still, this seems to be a matter of when rather than if. We’ll stay tuned.

Perfect fit for that program. But right now the Vols have much bigger fish to fry like, where are they gonna come up with an SEC QB??? It’s gonna be a loooooooooong season for Tenn. And let’s just say they get the #1 QB recruit nexr year…it’s still gonna be a couple of years for THAT guy to hit stride. The question will then be…will Kiff still be there???

The Vols won 5 games with Crapton at QB last year. My guess is they will beat UCLA at home this year, and beat Auburn at home this year. Both of those games the Vols should have won easily last year. The you throw in a non loss to a team like Wyoming (aka the home opener this year)Suddenly you have a team that is 8-4. Very doable, then who knows they may even win one they shouldn’t

TO ALL YOU DELUSIONAL VOL FANS:

YOU DONT HAVE A QUARTERBACK. REPEAT: YOU DONT HAVE A QUARTERBACK.

Oh, and your new SAVIOR of a coach did not even bring one on in this recruiting class. Good Luck, tards. BTW, Moody will not qualify.

For all you lizard and doggie fans, UT fans are well aware that QB is an issue for the next couple of years and departures are well expected. We changed coaches … REMBEMBER! You don’t change regimes in upward spirals. You do so when recruiting is hurting and wins are hard to come by. Realiztic UT fans do not expect to be in Atlanta or in a BCS this year. We fully understand what is at stake. What we do know is that excitment has been put back into the UT program, recruiting in going in the right direction and our players are playing with heart again. Just remember little doggies and lizards that these things go in circles. Right now, UT is down, but it will soon change. You will get tired of Richt always coming up short and Urban will soon be a golden domer. Enjoy it while you can because Rocky Top will soon be in contention again. Go Vols!

Jabronie, we know we don’t have an SEC quality QB yet. This will not be a pass-based offense. It’ll be run-based about 65 percent of the time because of the SEC quality RBs we have and have signed.
Our coach chose NOT to sign a QB this season because he felt like whoever he recruits this season will be better than the two he allowed to go elsewhere last season.
It may be a long season, heck two long seasons, at UT based on the lack of talent the previous staff brought in lately. Kiffin won’t be held accountable for the previous adm’s mistakes. He won’t be gone in two years like some hope, because the AD knows the situation.
If, IF, Moody is signed, he’ll be on a very short lease…maybe even one strike and he’s out. Thanks as always for all the interest in Tennessee football.

Can you believe coach kiffy runs off such a high character guy like BJ Coleman and their best qb on campus, not to mention this kid has bled orange all his life,to make room for Moody. What’s next in recruiting for him,Raford,Brushy Mountain,or maybe a even a more hardcore correctional institute? The plot thickens for this coach.

Mega T and all you excited Vol fans…it’s easy to be pumped before you even hit the field and play a game. IF Tenn can win 7-8 games then I think that will buy Kiffin some time to build his program, but I think that it may be more like 5-6. Alot of teams will be extra motivated to play you (I’m trying to put it nicely) and I think this year will be especially touch. There will be some blowouts and a couple of years of that, and you won’t be so excited.

He said he did all those things for the publicity (yea right) but I didn’t see Urban Meyer come in and accuse coaches and have recruits lie and bad mouth grandmothers and other schools etc and make an general arse out of himself and he’s done pretty well I think. If thats what you think you have to do to build your program then you must not have much of a program!

When you lose to an intramural team like Wyoming in your house, which by the way can fit the whole state of Wyoming, it is defenetely very wise to shut your mouth.
and I predict kiffin best season in his short time at Tennessee will be 8 wins, I actually think Tennessee overachieved during Fulmer’s era

VolsRule

April 24th, 2009

As this is primarily a UGA blog – I will be respectful and discuss TENNESSEE and also UGA.

I agree that we have some rebuilding to do – but our talent and depth has not dropped as low as some people are claiming. IN fact – end of last season – the Vols played well. Coach Fulmer and Coach Clausen just laid and egg on the new offense and we paid the price. Our defense was very good last year.

Defense will be good.

Offense – will have issues – but if they step up – Vols could win 7 games – 8 would be very good.

2009 Season:
Wins: W. KY, Ohio, Memphis, Vandy, Kentucky.
50/50: UCLA, Auburn, So. Carolina, Ole Miss
Have a chance: UGA
Need an upset: Florida, UGA, Alabama

A few thoughts:
Ole Miss will be good by Ole Miss standards – but not great – will not be as good in 2009. I think they will be a step behind UGA – which will also be good – but not a great in 2009 or beyond.

UGA – While UGA should be favored – coming off the LSU game (LSU will romp) and knowing that the talent is similar – a win against UGA is possible. UGA seems to have lost their MOJO that peaked in 2005. Still – should be a great game – and will need some breaks to win – maybe UGA will be a no show like they were in 2006.

As for Florida:
WOW – Enjoy it! Gators are on a roll!!! Class of the SEC – playing not to get embarrassed in this one.

As for Bama:
Congrats – Program has a chance to be undefeated in 2009 – get by VT – biggest remaining games are Ole Miss (will not be as good in 2009), LSU HUGE HUGE GAME, Tennessee (will give you a good game – we hope) and Auburn (will be similar to TN).

As for Georgia
I think UGA will be very similar to LSU 2008 – but I think UGA will be like this for a while. Program peaked in 2005 – just does not strike fear into a top programs like Florida, Bama or LSU – just being honest Dog fans. UGA will be fortunate to win 8 games this year – very doable – but will not be surprised if UGA loses 2 games and possibly 3 if SC or an improved Arkansas beats you BEFORE you play Tennessee.

Defense – UGA has been respectable to mediocre over the last 3 years. Should see some improvement – but not a great defense by any stretch.
Offense – OL will be good – but lacking great skill players at QB and RB – WR position is really good. Think Offense will not be as good in 2008.

FOR UGA:
Wins: AZ State, Vandy, Tn Tech, KY
Losses: Florida, LSU
50/50:
OK STATE (UGA walking into a hornets nest – they are returning the entire team and playing at OK State – will be a HUGE game for them)

S. CAROLINA – always plays UGA hard – beat UGA last time in Athens – sense a similar game – Either team could win.

ARKANSAS – will be the 08 Ole Miss in 2009 – will be improved and a handful – at Arkansas.

Tennessee – a winable game for UT – depending if UGA has any momentum and how they repsond to getting beat by LSU the week before.

Auburn – UGA was lucky to win the game last year. To me, not much difference in overall talent between Auburn, TN and UGA. Game is late in the season. Auburn’s defense will be very good – If offense has gelled – this is an Auburn win waiting to happen. AT UGA where Auburn seems to play better than home.

GT – I think GT will be improved – and this will be another great clash between bitter in state rivals. They will want this game very bad. Coin toss – rooting for the SEC in this one!!! Actually – wish Tennessee would play GT home and home frequently. Historically, GT and TN have had some great games going at each other.

Well – that’s my take. Neither Tennessee or UGA will be a threat to Florida – but both will have some exciting wins and some heartbreaking losses.

Vols Rule, thanks for the evaluation. Seems a bit obsessive to spend so much time on UGA and your thoughts on our upcoming season. Keep wishing that UGA sinks down to UT’s level; keep wishing.

UGA wins….. Az. St, Kent, Vandy, GT, Aub, OK state (remember last time we played them Hawaii, Boise St.), UT (lol, not a chance, keep dreaming, maybe in a few years), Arkansas (as always)

50 / 50 South Caronlina (always play tough early before they realize they suck), LSU (remember we beat their ass last year at LSU)

NO Chance – Florida (even though we out gained them last year in total yardage).

As for TN —– WHO CARES, not worth the time……..

shawn – nice reply!
As I mentioned in my original comment – with this being a uga blog – I would comment on uga and be respectful.

Hope you are enjoying the glory years at uga – next to 1981 – 83 – these are the best years in uga history – yet still unsatifying if your are trying to garner national respect.

Finally get to the REAL limelight – and you get beat by West Virginia and play Hawaii!!!

Losing records against what sec foes: Alabama, Auburn, LSU and Tennessee – and in 8 short years – Florida will get the series tied.

uga has always been a good respectible sec program – but it seems that many of your fans believe you are more nationally repsected than you are.

I believe UT has won 2 of last 3 – and both were blowouts. and UT has been to sec title game more recent than uga.

Face it shauw – uga is back to the good ole Donnan days – a good program – but just missing out on greatness – which sums up the total history of uga football. Look forward to passing you guys soon – and do not be surprised if uga chokes again in knoxville this year.

UT has the same qb that was an embarssament to D1 football at UCLA last fall, he is #1 on the depth chart. He couldn’t produce points against anyone, but in UT’s spring game they score 41. Now that says either UT asked for volunteers from the crowd or that defense has regressed by a tremendous amount. UT is looking 6 losses hard in the face and a possibility of 2-3 more. UK should have beaten you last year, but didn’t happen. Out of an entire staff, you have one quality coach, the rest are recruiters and their track record shows their coaching is below par. UT could be replaced by Vandy as the dominant program in the state if this hire turns out to be as questionable as it looks.

And for that excitement back int he Vol program, how many have left the program since Kiffin took over, 10? Of course they were not Vol material right?

Brick- I wouldn’t count on UT losing 8. That has NEVER happened in the history of college football. There are only two BCS teams who can claim that. Ohio State and The University of Tennessee. I’m not saying UT will make a complete turnaround overnight, but it will happen. You just keep on looking past them and thinking they are irrelevant and before you know it UT will be a major power again. I’m not here to bad-mouth other schools, but I am saying don’t get comfortable with being able to beat up on UT or anybody for that matter. These things go in cycles. There will be a day when UGA and yes even Florida will be down and looking up at the likes of UT or Kentucky or heaven forbid South Carolina. It happens and if you don’t think it can you are just fooling yourself.

VolsRule, that was actually some thoughtful analysis. My thinking is that the Vols will be a 6 to 7 game winner. That will be OK for the first year because anybody recognizes that some rebuilding will be going on. But you better not carry that into year 2 and for sure year 3 or you will start hearing what we like to refer down here as “noise in the system”. The “hot seat” rumors start and that effects the stability of your assistant coaching staff, recruiting, fan base support, etc and becomes the proverbial snowball rolling downhill. I do agree with you on UGA being a little down this year…you don’t just lose Stafford and Moreno without replacing with comparable talent, and expect status quo. As far as Florida being “on a roll”…this is where I have some bad news for you and many other teams in the conference. Being “on a roll” implies that you are “lucky” or “hot” and could fall off at any time. What Urban Meyer has built is a dominant program with lasting power. Sure, Florida won’t win the NC or the SEC every year, but they will be there or right at the door knocking for many years to come. I notice that many rival teams fans big rally cry is “wait till he goes off to Notre Dame”! It’s because they know in their hearts as long as Meyer is there, so will be Florida.
