Basketball prospect Daniel Miller switches from UGA to rival Georgia Tech

By Darryl Maxie, dmaxie@ajc.com

Georgia’s loss became Georgia Tech’s gain Wednesday when 6-foot-11 center Daniel Miller of Loganville Christian Academy signed a financial-aid agreement with the Yellow Jackets, a day after gaining his release from the letter-of-intent he signed with Georgia last fall.
“He’s very happy with the decision,” said Preston Towns, Miller’s father. “And Tech seems very happy with the decision.”

Tech coach Paul Hewitt confirmed those sentiments in a statement Wednesday afternoon.
“We feel very fortunate to add a student-athlete of Daniel Miller’s caliber to our recruiting class,” Hewitt said. “My staff and I are looking forward to the opportunity to work with him. We feel that he will fit in great with our other players and take full advantage of our player-development program.”

He joins a class that already has been ranked No. 3 nationally by Rivals.com, headlined by 6-9 forward Derrick Favors of South Atlanta.

Miller signed with Georgia in November, when Dennis Felton was still the Bulldogs’ coach. When Felton was fired Jan. 29, and ultimately replaced by former Nevada coach Mark Fox, the 240-pound center reconsidered one of the schools that seemed to have pursued him in vain.

Asked if the coaching change was the reason for Miller’s change of heart, Towns said simply, “Yes.”

Miller led Loganville Christian to three straight championships in the Independent Christian Schools of Georgia-Alabama as his team won 71 of 73 games during his stay. He was named most valuable player for his final two seasons at the private school.

He averaged 20.8 points, eight rebounds, five blocks and connected on 73 percent of his shots, often playing only the first half.

Jaxdawg, The financial aid package is usually used to keep another scholarship open in the event of another player who may want to sign this year and who needs the money, particularly a player from out of state who would have to pay out of state tuition. Miller has the Hope Scholarship and the financial aid package will probably make up the difference, or it could be for the signing of Demario Mayfield who Tech considered offering before he signed with UGA.

The financial aid agreement is signed instead of the national letter of intent because players are only allowed to sign one of those. Once his LOI with UGA was rescinded, he could not sign one with GT, so, instead signed the financial aid agreement.

Hey, losing recruits is just part of the deal when you change coaches. As a Georgia guy, I have to say that I can’t blame a young player for deciding to go with someone who already recruited him, rather than staying for a rebuilding job with coaches he’s never met. I hope he has a great career at Tech, except, of course, for that one game a year.

Ya’ll are truly pathetic that you have so much hate for us.

Apparently Mr. Miller has an affinity for terrible coaches. He loved Felton and now is signing with the worst basketball coach in the state of Georgia, the talent-waster known as Paul Hewitt. Even his own fans know he cannot coach his way out of a paper bag.

UGA logic
1. start with talking about the past 7-10 years
2. if one 1 does not work talk about how many girls we have (even though you did not go to UGA you are hoping this is true)
3. if both don’t work just call them nerds because they are going to get paid more than you ever will in the first 2 years out of college.
Good job UGA fans maybe when you can talk about something that differs from those 3 things once in a while it might be fun to talk smack to you but since none of you can think outside of the box its like hitting a blind kid.

I am a UGA grad and I bleed Red & Black through and through, but seriously people…..I cannot believe how torn up people get on these things. In reality, most of these comments make both schools look like their fan bases are morons. C’MON!!!!!!

As allenlaw said, you cannot blame a kid for changing schools when the coach and staff who recruited him (and whom he and his family got comfortable with)leaves. He knows the Tech guy so good for him….I hope he does great as he is a product of our state! Hopefully UGA will shut him down when the Dawgs and Jackets play.

We have to be behind Fox as our coach. There have been so many successful coaches come into programs as unknowns who did great just like there have been big name hires who sucked up the place. He will recruit and UGA is not a sinking ship…it sank a few years ago when Harrick sank it. It is just very rusty and stuck in the seaweed of the past! Hopefully it will be pulled up soon so that our states talent has a choice as to where to go for an in-state Div. I basketball program.

It does amaze me how much Tech folks seem to rag UGA all the time, but then it amazes me how ignorant some comebacks can be. Tech beat us last year…no one handed it to them. Don’t let people get so under your skin… seriously…. GO DAWGS!!!!!

Georgia gets a brand new start this year and not many currently on board for Coach Fox. Based on what I have heard about his playing style, I won’t be surprised to hear of more defections.
Georgia, IMO, didn’t improve their standing in the state for basketball talent by this hire. Somehow I hope they find a way to be NCAA tourney competitive. Same for Tech. Hewitt should be on the hot seat this year if he gets last year’s results.

….saw this posted earlier today in another site’s blog….

——
My son played w/ Daniel his Sr yr at LCA (Daniel’s soph yr) and my wife works there. I’ve seen him play a bunch. We are UGA grads and go to 2-4 UGA B-ball games/yr. Here’s my take fwiw.

That GWA video is from Daniel’s Jr yr when he was 6′8″. He’s a legit 6′11″ now and has size 17 feet. He’ll top 7′. The league we played in is weak …really, really weak. The league is not about embarassing people or rolling up big #’s.

He got his D-1 attention from his AAU play this summer (his only yr playing AAU – Jon Richt didn’t play against any D-1 caliber comp until he got to Clemmuns). He got his offers from that (Tubby really wanted him ,but Minn too far). As soon as word got out last PM that he had been released he got phone calls from Virginia, Minn, and the like in 2 hours.

He’s got a really high B-ball IQ which helps make up for some of his lack of strength and quickness by his seeing plays developing and anticipating. A year of D-1 conditioning will improve those areas I’m sure.

He has great hands and a really soft 12-15 ft jumpshot (see free throw form in video).

He is a quality kid in every regard and comes from a wonderful family with major UGA ties – Spec Towns grandson).

I haven’t talked w/ him this week, but I’d guess he wanted to play for a coach he had previous relationship with (nothing against Fox, just nothing for him per se). He liked Felton adn likes Hewitt. Even after he signed w/ UGA (he attended just about every UGA home game) he also went to a couple of Tech games and likes the staff and team there

Even those I “boo-hiss” the NATS everytime I pass it on the downtown connector, I’ll be cheering loudly for Daniel.

Clarification on the “grant-in-aid” vs “letter of intent” question….(per ncaa)….

NLI policy states a prospective student-athlete is only permitted to sign one valid NLI in an academic year. Therefore, if you sign a NLI during the early period and get a complete release by the institution or one of the NLI committees before the spring signing period ends, you are not permitted to sign a second NLI in the spring. You must wait until the next academic year to sign another valid National Letter of Intent if you have not enrolled at a four-year institution.

As I say about Global Warming and the Enginerds can understand this, there are not enough data points to predict the future. Let me get this straight. The kid is 6′ 11″ and only averaged 9 rebounds a game while playing 2A Independent Christian Schools of GA/AL division. Wow, we are really going to miss that guy. Recruiting projects like this is what is what got Felton fired in the first place. The bottom line, Georgia Tech needs to graduate some basketball players for PR and to stay in compliance. Georgia Tech’s program is the worst in the country. I can’t think of another college program that has had more NBA talent on their roster in the last five years and done absolutely nothing with it.

DJ

Sanford,

I’ll take that as a serious question, although I assume there will be a punchline at some point. We have a significantly smaller school, therefore a significantly smaller fanbase. We have significantly fewer majors, and let’s face it we have a different overall make-up of the student body than most liberal arts/state U. schools. And that’s not meant as a slam on UGA nor is it a slam on some of our “nerdier” students. It’s simply fact. And I could care less. I must say that I personally only care about a select few (myself and family, coaches and players) attending any of our games. I do laugh at the fact that it (attendance and stadium size), along with Star Trek (not a fan) and tickle piles (no idea what that is, but I think it may resemble that picture of Stafford and his buddy at the kegger a few years back) always come up when the little North Avenue trade school gets a leg up on the Pugs from Athens. Come on, bigger school, prettier women, more resources (facilities, money/alums, curriculum), REM, Ryan Seacrest, Auburn and every Georgia high school’s fight song……you should never lose to us in anything. But lately, I can’t think of anything head to head of any importance that you have won. So, having a smaller crowd at the Tech spring game doesn’t really bother me, and doesn’t really help you.

Rated the No. 8 center prospect by ESPN.com, Miller averaged 28.8 points, 12.3 rebounds and 7 blocks in leading his school to the championship of the Independent Christian Schools of Georgia-Alabama.

“For a player of his size, he has tremendous hands, touch and instincts for the game,” Georgia coach Dennis Felton said. “He can score with his back to the basket and also facing up to 18 feet. He also has a real knack for rebounding and blocking shots, most of which he keeps in play.”

It’s funny how Tech just keeps pulling in top recruits but consistently finishes far down in their conference and RPI.

Hewitt may be winning the recruiting battle, but why ANY player would want to go there is beyond me. He does nothign with the talent, and his track record of taking top tier talent and prepping them to even amount to average NBA players is probably the worst in all of college basketball.

Basically, as a recruit you gain NOTHING from attending Tech unless you are there for the academics. We all know the big stud recruits are rarely concerned with their academics, no matter what school they go to, so why go to Tech? Shows very poor decision making ability. It would be one thing if they actually improve while at Tech, but one could make a strong argument that most of Tech’s recruits under Hewitt are valued less after they play for him than they were straight out of high school.

As a man, he’ll be about 7′ or more, 260 lbs and most likely see 5 seasons at Tech. If he’s the 28th best center this year, I’d say by the time he’s a junior he’ll be a solid contributor.

Oh, and for the guy who said he’s white, how did that white center in Chapel Hill work out for the past 4 years?

DJ, That’s how you know when the doggies like Sanford have really bottomed out. They start talking about their round-heeled women & spring game attendance. And their stadium is huge. I mean it’s sooo BIG!!

Good point GADAWG, I know that “spelt” is used in Georgia, but us Carolina Dawg fans like to used the word “spelled”.

Yeah, GADAWG, you sure didn’t help your cause with that one. The fact is that the grammar and spelling of probably 75% of the posters here from both sides is atrocious. Some of it may be the result of honest typos, but not much. I can’t believe how many apparently do not know the difference between “there” and “their” and “they’re”, or “hear” and “here”, or “your” and “you’re”. Come on, guys, didn’t you learn anything basic in school, however far you managed to go?

Sidewalk alums & Wal-Mart fans falling off the bandwagon left & right. Why in the world would anyone that wants to be the best top to bottom go to Ga if they can go to Tech? Wait. I forgot. Big stadium, round-heeled women & the chance to hang around Athens & go to spring games for the rest of your life.

UGA basketball is a joke. GT tapped that ass in basketball, football and baseball this year. Sucks to be a UGAY fan. Look for GT to be top 15 next year in basketball, football, and baseball next year. Feels great to be a GT fan!

Bleu_Bayou42, he averaged 30 a game and 9 boards playing only half the game. Read the paper, son.

HHH, you are such an AH. Just cannot get over loosing several things to GT. probably including your virginity, to an ex-UGA cheerleader that transfered to GT. PS, you are also an idiot. Why don’t you just leave the kid alone and let him live his own life without so much interference?

This kid will be a benc player at best. The kind of competition he faced was pretty weak. At 6′11″, he’ll have fun and get a good education. But superstar he isn’t. Keep in mind techies that he signed with Dennis Felton who was a miserable failure at recruiting…which is why he isn’t coaching UGA hoops anymore. Oh yeah, and you two-faced fools were calling for Hewitt’s head on a platter just a couple of weeks ago! Enjoy Derrick Favors for the single year he will be at Tech. Looking forward to Mark Fox becoming a hell of a success very shortly. That’s a guarantee.
