Gainesville QB tells Nick Saban he’s signing with Alabama

QB Blake Sims commits to Alabama (Photo by Sims family)

Gainesville’s Blake Sims, one of UGA’s targets at quarterback, committed to Alabama on Saturday. Sims met in person with Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban.

“Blake and his dad are fired up,” Gainesville offensive coordinator Todd Wofford said. “Blake said he had no choice but to commit.”

“It was everything he was looking for. Coach Saban and his staff were really straight forward with Blake. They said he has a legitimate chance to fight for the QB spot. If his heart is at QB, then he would stay at QB.”

Sims had around 3,400 all-purpose yards and 42 total touchdowns last year for Gainesville. He had around a dozen offers, including UGA, Michigan, West Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Ole Miss, North Carolina State, and Florida State.

Sims said all the schools except for Georgia offered him strictly at quarterback. Before the Alabama trip, Sims named his his top three choices as Michigan, West Virginia and UGA. He has yet to meet college entrance requirements, and will soon take the SAT and ACT for the first time.

BLAKE. CONGRATS ON ALABAMA AND NICK SABAN. I’M GLAD HE WAS HONEST WITH YOU, AND WILL PLAY YOU AT QUARTERBACK. I’M GLAD YOU’RE GOING ANYWHERE BUT GEORGIA. MEN OF OUR BACKGROUND HAVE NOT BEEN GIVEN A CHANCE AT GEORGIA. THEY TREATED QUINCY CARTER, JOE DUPREE, WAYNE JOHNSON AND HINES WARD AND OTHERS VERY POORLY. THERE IS A TREND!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GEORGIA Q.B. COACH MIKE BOBO HAS NEVER SIGNED ONE OF US. GOOD CHOICE SON.

Blake is the real deal. I guess CMR didn’t need another quarterback. He’s a winner and I dread seeing him at Ala. I’m concerned about the number of recruits Georgia has committed … I think its one. What’s going on at Georgia? Everyone else is racking up on recruits and we seem to be playing the waiting game? Could someone at AJC give us a story of what’s going on?

Tiger Man (T. Moore) – Please……UGA doesn’t need QB’s at this point…Has nothing to do with Blake….Just simple recruiting numbers….I for one like the way UGA is recruiting…Entrance requirements may have something to do with it..

Hey Tiger Man….does one of us mean that Bobo does not sign dumba$$e$$? Your sure sound like one. WOW you cannot even list all the black qb’s UGA has had (that is your point correct?). Keep talking an inserting your foot in your mouth. By the way have you ever heard of someone named DJ Shockley?

Let’s see Tiger Man (aka Dip$h!t) UGA has had the following starters at QB in the last 25 years: James Jackson, Wayne Johnson, Hines Ward, Quincy Carter, DJ Shockley. What is the trend that we are supposed to observe? That UGA is colorblind as it pertains who starts at QB? If so we get it, we follow UGA as well. If you are suggesting some type of Terence Moore conspiracy then you need to pull your head out of your —. Unless I am overlooking one or two, in that same period (1985-Present) UA has had Andrew Zow. So, if we are keeping score and using your moronic logic, I guess we know which school has given chances and which has not. You are an idiot, but I suspect you know that already as I am sure your family tells you that daily.

TIGER MAN……YOU ARE A JACK ASS. I GUESS DJ Shockley was white…..please go back to cleaning the bathrooms at MCdonalds and leave the grown up talk to us. If you are good enough you will play at UGA, if not you want. Hell, Hines played every damn position on the field, they didn’t care if he was white or black, Hell Hines was mixed with everything and he still played QB

UGA doesn’t need QB’s right now – couldn’t guarantee the young man would be left at QB so he went to ‘BAMA – good pick up by ‘BAMA. We can’t get every recruit in Ga., just a numbers game. I just don’t want any more Eric Berry’s getting away. That guy is amazing.

    Yo Steve …..

I’m an SEC “homer” (Kentucky) as we’re referred to now.

Have you seen the two 2010 recruits that recently committed to GT?? Looks like your dogs may have just lost TWO “Eric Berry calibre” guys to the opposition down there in the Peach state. The Holton kid (DB) looks really good, and the RB that just committed looks unbelievable; big, tough, and VERY fast.

Look, it’s not a white and black thing….Mark Richt is a man of his word and he promised DJ he would play, even if it cost him a national championship in 2002. Now he’s promised since then Stafford he would play and now he’s got the Murray kid out of Florida and he’s promised him he’ll play…that’s how he operates…kinda stupid for a Div. 1 coach to do but hey, the Dawg fans love him….for now.

The middle of the highlight shows film from the White County game. White County(a non-playoff team) had a DB that’s 5ft.7in. tall and picked Sims off 3 times.

And Gwinnett Guy, if you weren’t such a racist pig then you would know that D.J Shockley was no where near ready to play in 2002. David Greene is the all-time winningest QB in history. Facts are facts. Sorry.

“Die hard Georgia Tech fan here!” This kid is good and should go to Bama, because he has a chance to start. Now on to the bullpulps. CMR is a good man and Coach. I don’t think the comment that tiger man made is justified. As much as I enjoy the thought of beating the bulldogs, I have to admit that Coach Richt is more than a fair man.

There is always the next kid who is the big hype. There will be on each year. What makes a mobile quarterback great in college and not in the NFL? The answer is only 5% of the kids in D1-A make the league. Therefor a running quarterback has a field day running around sub-par competition. When the elite quarterback lines-up in the league, like Michael Vick they learn the entire field is elite.

Running quarterbacks are phenoms in high school, elite to above average in college and busts in the league.

Some of these kids who just choose to go to the same schools to go play QB and sit on the bench are foolish. You have to look at the depth chart and base the decision on where you think might play. This kid probably made the right decision. Reality is that GA doesn’t really need a QB until it becomes evident that these high profile QBs they just signed don’t have the talent most think they have.

The Dawgs need to sign a QB in 2010. I don’t think the race will matter as he has the talent to lead the MR offense. Blake Sims is going to Alabama to play for an EXCELLENT program. Good luck with your future Sims! UGA needs to put a solid team together on offense and defense. There is always something missing every year whether its DEs or OL. Why doesn’t Florida or Alabama ever have lack of intensity and discipline?

I will never understand some of the logic people use in the recruiting battles…You can’t get every kid and I think there is way too much focus on next years recruiting class….UGA and GT will get their share and there will be a large number going else where……I for one like the way CMR and Johnson are recruiting and cutting kids loose if they do foolish things….GT finally winning has put some spice back into this rivalary….Who really thinks Saban will stay at Bama for more than a few years….He will chase the money again….

And Im glad that coach Richt didnt lie to the young man, as so many other coaches would have done, and lure him with promises of playing qb any time soon. So young man go enjoy yourself at Bama, learn all you can. Later all you Dawg fans! THWT! GO YOU HAIRY DAWGS!

    UGA_20001,

You freaking ignoramus. Alabama has 3 black head coaches now. Grant the new basketball coach and the track and field coach and the women’s basketball coach are black. How many black head coaches does UGA have you freaking idiot? If you don’t know what the hell you are talking about then just STFU!

Andrew Zow was treated extremely well. He was inserted in the 2nd half of a game his freshman year over an ineffective 5th year senior white qb. Zow threw an int that ended the game late but after that he was pretty much the starter the rest of his career. Once again, you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.

You also forget about Walter Lewis who had a very successful career as a black bama qb and Danny Woodson who was not successful but at least was given a chance. Idiot!

Lastly, Zow was honored either last year or the year before at halftime of a big game I can’t remember which game but he led Bama onto the field also. I wonder why that was if he was treated so bad?

    Huh?

I didn’t realize Billy Jack could see into the future and see that Aaron Murray will be the kind of kid that “only comes around every 20 years or so”. Billy Jack really is on crack to make such an incredulous statement. He probably moonlights as a professional qb sout.

And are we even talking about the same Aaron Murray out of plant high school in Tamps, Fl. Is this the same kid that passed for something like 60 yards on 8 of 25 passing and a couple of picks in the state playoff quarterfinals. Is that the same kid that comes along once every 20 years like a Joe Montana or Dan Marino?

Really a silly choice, WV, UF, Mich would have been a much better choice for him if he wants to play qb. He isn’t a pro style qb and if he stays at QB and not effective by end of his 2nd year Bama will need his ship for the next great prospect. If the Bama fans don’t like that statement then they need to address their fans on internet recruiting sites that say that is how Bama’s program is operated.

bama12titles- our AD is black for crying out loud. Why does it even matter. Everyone wants to find racism in something. How about we get the best people, for the best posititions, regardless of race. If you consider that only 12 % of the population is black, and you look at the roster for any of these teams, you will see that if anything, there is a black bias, not white. And there are not going to 50% black head coaches either, that is just the law of statistics.

I believe that Anthony Flanagan (rest in peace) was one of the first black QB’s to start in the SEC back in the 70’s.
Signed to play BB at UGA, but still was a QB also.
Nonsense to say that UGA has something against black QB’s.
I believe we’re recruiting one from Virginia now.
