Union County is tucked away in the northeast corner of Georgia. It’s extremely out of the way for college coaches, but some are making the journey to gather information on Blake Gowder.

Gowder plays wide receiver for Union County. He’s 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.53 seconds.

Gowder is waiting on his first offer. He says he has interest from Central Florida, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Georgia, Duke, Kentucky, Clemson and Arkansas. He recently attended UGA’s Junior Day and talked with assistant Tony Ball.

“Coach Ball said to keep in touch and to send them some film,” Gowder said. “He wants me to come to camp this summer to see what I can do.”

Gowder attended a Georgia Tech game this past season. “I liked it a lot. I’m hoping that they will talk to me some more.”

Gowder says he keeps in contact with Central Florida the most. “Recruiting is going good so far. I just have to go to these college camps and show them when I can do in person. That’s what they are telling me.”

Gowder is also a major-college prospect in baseball, playing both shortstop and pitcher.

I’m amazed that a 4.53 is considered slow. The reality is that very few people can run a sub 4.4. That is just recruiting propaganda. Check out the NFL combine. How many actually ran a sub 4.4. Yelp, less than 10. I hear of people claiming that they know of kids that run in the 4.2’s. I always ask when the kid will be running in the Olympics. That is world class speed. Anything below a 4.6 is actually very good speed.

Spot on, Dawgtime. Rocky is out of his mind if he thinks 4.53 is slow. Plus, i don’t really think .1 seconds every 40 yards is that big of a difference. Angles, are everything in football.

    exactly….most of these reported 40 times are pure BS……anything under a 4.6 is a very good time…..

I don’t believe he runs a 4.53 to be honest with you. I’ve seen him play. He is a great route runner, great hands, goes up for the ball, all the things that a good receiver does. He is a good player. I’d put him at a 4.8 or slower in pads. I agree with everything that each of you has said, that most of the times that people post as their 40s is BS. Including here.

I went to High School with Blake, I was a senior when he was a Sophomore, and watching him play the last thing you will think is that he is slow. This kid can play.

Blake would have an immediate opportunity to prove himself at UCF. I hope we offer him, he seems like a good football player.

I was a cornerback and I played against him and I will tell you he is definately the best reciever I have ever played even though I shut him down =P haha He has very good straight-away speed but he isn’t as shifty as some little quick recievers, but he is a HUGE and very strong reciever so you can’t expect him to be as shifty. There is such thing as game speed and he definately has it. I only ran a 4.6 forty in high school, but I could beat the 4.4 kids in foot races. For some people when you’re running next to someone you get this adrenaline and motivation to beat them, while some people run better on their own. But I would say his game speed is underrated as he ran very well downfield.
