Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson has hinted that next year’s recruiting class may be entirely comprised of prospects from the state of Georgia. Thomasville safety Fred Holton is Georgia Tech’s second commitment, following in the footsteps of Collins Hill tailback Charles Perkins.
“Georgia Tech is my dream school, I just wanted to go ahead and get it out of the way,” said Holton, who picked the Jackets over offers from Central Florida, Kansas State and Ole Miss. He also had emerging interest from Georgia and Clemson.
VIDEO: Click here to see Holton (#15) in action on the field (Note: This is a .wav file)
“Coach Johnson was telling me I had a scholarship offer, and another safety had an offer. He has a minimum amount of scholarship offers, and he would rather me commit now than later. He said it wouldn’t be good for me to wait too long. Say I get injured at spring practice? That could be a reason for some colleges to drop me. If I went ahead and committed to Georgia Tech, then my scholarship would be there, even if I got injured .. [However], in the end, it was always going to be Georgia Tech, no matter what.”
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Holton said Tech was his top choice all along because of academics. He could’ve held out longer for more offers, but didn’t feel the need because he already had the scholarship letter he wanted.
Last month, Georgia Tech signed 14 in-state players, the largest haul since 1992. “The state is very important,” Johnson said. “We wanted to try to make an emphasis on that, and we have. There’s a chance we may take everybody in-state this year [with our 2010 scholarships]. We may take them all from Georgia.”
Georgia Tech expects to sign between 12-15 players next year, and already has two Georgia-based commitments. Said Johnson, ““We’re one of the two bigger in-state schools and we need to make sure that we are very thorough here. Now does that mean we won’t go outside? No. But if we are going outside of the state, those guys need to be remarkably better than the guys we can find in the state. As long as we can find guys with what we need academically in the state, there is no use to bypass them for somebody else.”

he is not the number two prospect…he is a espnu 150 watchlister, but what the story headline means is” the second Georgia Tech prospect to commit for the class of 2010″. I think Fred will be end up being a four or five star on rivals once they evaluate him. If you look right now he is a one star but he has not been evaluated yet. Go Jackets…Lets get a good class for 2010.

GeoffDawg, I agree. If he didn’t get an offer from Georgia, he can’t be an elite prospect. Georgia Tech only gets our leftovers in this state. They beat us once out of eight years, and they can’t even break into Tailer Jones’ top 15 … lolololololololol

One star means he hasn’t been evaluated yet, morons. Why are ya’ll so frantic to diss an 18 year old that wants to go to tech “because of academics”, and especially when he had “emerging interest from Georgia and Clemson”? Admit for once that you may have lost out on this one. I look forward to him following in the footsteps of great safeties like Morgan Burnett and running interceptions back for touchdowns against ya’ll yearly.

Fred is ranked as one-star by the genuises at Dawgpost. Chad Simmons really knows his stuff. Boy he loves prospects that Georgia is recruiting. That’s all he writes about as a so-called “Southeastern Recruiting Analyst.” What a joke. He never gives Georgia Tech any love. His best friend is Rodney Garner. They talk every day plotting pro-Georgia propaganda for the Scout rankings.

You really have no clue what you are talking about. Rivals has already done their initial evaluation of 2010 recruits and released the top 250. Guess who’s not in it. This guy, like almost every other Tech recruit, is 3 stars at best.

I am happy for this young man but don’t like coaches pressuring HS Jr’s to commit so soon. I understand GT has a limited number of scholarships for next year but this is the biggest decision these players have ever had to make. Don’t rush them and then pull their offer later if they decide to visit another school (as GT did this year). I wish Fred Holton the best at GT, except when they play UGA or FSU (my teams).

Fred is a fine young man, from a great family, and for those of you questioning his talents, well I would say to all of you is to stay tuned. Fred will be a star down in South Georgia, but will probably receive little press because he has already commited to GA Tech.

Fred is a 17 year old from a small South Georgia town. I always felt that he wasn’t getting the looks he deserved. It’s funny that after every game the opposing coach always asked, “Who’s #15.” He’s a phenomenal player who works hard and has a great attitude. I would like to know how someone can judge a person without ever meeting him. The best thing all you naysayers can do is—Watch and see. And no he has not been evaluated by espn or anyone else. Thanks for your interest. Go Jackets!!!!!!

Robert in speaking with Fred, I don’t think he was “pressured”; however, he asked the Coach for the pros and cons of committing early. One of the examples the coach gave was, “In the event you get hurt during spring practice, you would still have the scholarship.” This wasn’t a tool used solely to recruit him. Just a little clarification. Also, Fred really likes Georgia and has the utmost respect for Coach Mike Bobo; nonetheless he can’t help how the Georgia fans “speak for the school.” He has never said anything negative about his recruiting experience with Georgia. Like Fred, these Coaches can choose who they like. A good Coach is not going to select a player, even if he is good and highly ranked, if he doesn’t need him.

I’m not trying to be a jerk. I just get annoyed when people make these claims that have no facts to support them. The fact is that Rivals released thier top 250 for 2010 and Holton was not in it. This means he most definitely won’t be a 5 star on Rivals and will most likely be at best a 3 star. The ESPN 150 watch list has over 600 players on it, including 60 safeties. I don’t think he would be on a watch list based on word of mouth. I promise you the recruiting services have evaluated his high school film. I’m sure this kid is a great high school player and I wish him luck, but be realistic on his status as a college recruit.

I know that talent matters, but I also know that there are a lot of superb athletes that never see the lofty recruit ratings. The Thomas Davis comparison above was right on target. If there has been a college safety that made more of an impact on his team and opposing offenses than Thomas Davis, I haven’t seen him. Also when I was playing High School ball in upstate NY I wasn’t even a blip on any college’s radar screen. After moving south for my last 2 years I managed a scholarship to an SEC school and had 6 years in the league. Personally I think this Holton kid is one of those that will play way above whatever ranking these recruiting services may lay on him. The kid’s a tremendous athlete.

Thanks for finally doing a post on GT recruiting, considering the fact that of the 10 most recent posts, 7 have been about UGA, including video of a placekicker that Saint Richt has recruited.
Is it possible for AJC to get someone who is at least remotely interested in the GT football program to start posting articles here?
Hey Lars – those 3 star recruits at Tech beat your 4 and 5 star recruits last year. It isn’t the amount of stars you have, it’s what you do with those players that counts. I guess you found that out last November.

Not trying to stir the pot here, but I do wonder what would happen if this kid did sustain a serious injury as he mentioned. Tech only has 12 to 15 schollys slated for next year, so it would be tempting for CPJ to look for a healthy alternative. I hope it doesn’t come to that because I never want to see an athlete’s career cut short by an injury.

Lars Taint, Don’t tak so much stock in these recruiting services. They are much more for the fan then college coaches recruiting players. Most recruiters are’n't even looking at these sites. Sure they get the obvious one’s, combine participants Etc., but for the most part the differece in the talent level of most of these D-1 recruits is marginal. I will take D-1 student-athlletes that are Hard working, characther players, with high grades. How many stars for those kids?

FWIW, I don’t put a lot of validity into the entire top 150. I mean think about it – what if this kid is ranked #162. Is there really a lot of difference between #162 and, say, #144? I never said that he won’t be good. I never said that recruiting rankings or stars mean anything. I was just responding to Wiley’s claim that he will be a 4 or 5 star recruit on Rivals. He will not. Rivals has realeased the top 250 and his is not on the list. The ESPN 150 to watch has over 600 players on the list and he is one of 60 safties on that list. He will most likely not be in the actual ESPN 150 when it is realeased. He may very well be the next Thomas Davis, I was just pointing out how wrong Wiley is for saying he was going to be such a highly sought after recruit.

truegold92 – I agree that recruits don’t tell the entire story of a particular team, but it certainly has some correlation. UGA has a top 10 recruiting class virtually every year and they consistently end the season ranked in the top 10. That may not mean much to you, but I do see how it influences your standing within the final rankings. I don’t view our program as a failure and I don’t see how others could as well.

UGA will get who they really want and this kid sounds like he wanted to go to Tech all along, so good for him and good for Tech. Let’s wish him the best and move on. You Georgia Bulldog fans are unbelievable. First off, despite all the top 5 recruiting classes that UGA brings in year after year, UGA is never in the national title hunt and is only rarely in the SEC title chase. Second, how come so few Bulldogs go to the NFL under Richt? Jim Donnan was actually better at developing NFL talent … Hines Ward, Champ and Boss Bailey, 3 #1 picks on the DL (Seymour, Stroud, Grant). You UGA fans do a lot of yapping to win 2 more games and send maybe 2 more players to the NFL each year than Tech does. And now that Tech has a coach who doesn’t even need top talent to win games (the fellow went 45-29 at NAVY), it means that he doesn’t even need to waste his time going head to head for the next 5 star recruit that will go to UGA, play uninspiring football for 3-4 years (if that long) and is never heard from again. He can go after 2-3 star recruits that A) will actually become good college players in their system, which isn’t a “pro – style” system anyway and B) can meet Georgia Tech’s academic requirements.
The best part: Georgia Tech doesn’t delude themselves into thinking that they are going to win a national title. They are shooting for an ACC title about once ever 3-4 years, and with Johnson they can accomplish that. It is UGA fans that delude themselves into thinking that they are ever going to out recruit the LSUs, Alabamas, and Floridas and outcoach the Meyers and Sabans (and this speaks nothing of the Carrolls, Tressels, Stoops, Browns etc. in other conferences) and have to face the cold hard fact that you guys are just a second tier program with a second tier coach after all. So now UGA fans are reduced to bragging about their CONFERENCE. Wow. Well UGA fans, if you were in the Big 12 you’d be #3 behind Texas and Oklahoma, and if you were in the Pac-10 you’d be #2 behind USC, and if you were in the Big 10 you’d be #2 behind Ohio State, and even if you were in the ACC or Big East, you’d be behind FSU, Miami, Virginia Tech and West Virginia the years that they are good. Why do I say this? Because when was the last time UGA beat a team like that? When was Georgia’s last victory over a top 10 nonconference team? (If you are going to trot out Hawai’i, that just shows how pathetic you are, as Hawai’i isn’t even one of the stronger mid – majors like Utah, Boise, or TCU … and by the way FSU was only 9-5 plus without their starting QB in that 2002 Sugar Bowl.)
So UGA fans, have fun waiting on Urban Meyer, Les Miles and Nick Saban to leave the conference so you guys can finally have a shot at winning something more meaningful than an afterthought SEC title in a down year. You UGAers may shoot for the stars, but the truth is that you don’t even hit the moon any more than Georgia Tech does. And since Tech has all of these barriers to success (academics, small campus/alumni, a general unwillingness to recruit players that we know will flunk out and/or break the law, and a disdain for going on probation) what is your excuse for being a blip on the college football radar when your starting tailbacks aren’t named Herschel?

I admit it- UGA has a better football team year in and year out than GT does, but so what?? We recruit athletes who meet our academic standards and so does UGA- which means we get fewer recruits eligible than they do because their standards are lower. They do not have to be higher for family studies, phys ed, or the other majors where they hide their athletes. College football is not about college education, it is about big time money. Georgia has a lot more alums due to size and ease of entry and certain academic studies, more athletic money because of the emphasis on fund raising and selling status to rich alums within the AD. I accept all of this and enjoy it. Tech will never get the great athletes who are stupid, and I can live with that. Insults from UGA types don’t bother me at all, considering the source. My brother went to UGA and I know he could have gone to Tech because he is very smart, but he does not insult me like these UGA posters because he has class as well, something a lot of his brethren are sorely missing. After all, folks, believe it or not, it is only a game.
Who and what you are is not reflected by your team’s results. Get a grip.

Good job PJ. Tech will pick up a good recruit every now and then (ex: Calvin Johnson). This kid looks to have good character and that is really what techies should be interested in. This kid will pan out to be a 3 or 4 star recruit and will probably be the star of GT’s 2010 class. On the other hand he is the perfect size for a safety and from Thomasville (a skip and a jump away from FSU) and didn’t get an offer from FSU. He has 1 offer from a big time school, Ole Miss, and lets be honest. Who hasn’t got a offer from Ole Miss? I mean they had like 50 to 100 in their 2009 class. This kid could pan out to be a really good player but as of right now I feel like PJ took a gamble on him. Only time will tell.
Oh yeah and one star means he hasn’t really been evaluated but no evaluation also means he hasn’t been doing much in games to draw attention to himself. Just some food for thought.

texaswreck – I accept the good natured ribbing that goes back and forth, but the “academic” argument for your athletes is about as meaningful and lasting as a fart in the wind. As you put it, “get a grip”.
Just a few months ago the AJC did an article about the academics at both UGA and GT and how both schools accept athletes who do not score as well as the average student. Not only are a ridiculously small amount of Tech’s athletes majoring in Engineering, the SAT scores of athletes at Tech averaged 79 points higher than UGA’s. That hardly supports the “academic superiority” of GT’s athletes. This is significant for two reasons:
First, if you had two children and one scored 79 points higher than the other, would you consider your child with the lower score to be “dumb”?
Second, do you measure a person’s intelligence just by their SAT score? I cannot believe any rational person would do so.
Let’s face it, ALL D-1 schools who offer scholarships bend the rules for athletes.

Wow! It’s said to see that some people are working really hard to make this blog about them. What does the actions of others have to do with Georgia Tech recruiting Holton? Holton has made good choices and I believe he will continue to do so. Judge a man solely on his character not on the dumb choices others have made. Morals and values should already be embedded, if not innately fixated, in a player before they even come under the tutelage of a Coach. Don’t blame the Coaches for a player’s actions off the field. Let’s get back to the subject. bwell you are just unstable. How do you wish a man good luck and in the same breath call him leftover. Keep your well wishes–they are meaningless.

They were big time recruits (at least 4 stars) and we need to bring in more guys like them. All of those guys were Gailey’s recruits.

How can you say that about Dawgpost? UGASports confirmed with CMR himself and said that Kwame Geathers did not have a Georgia offer. Where did Kwame sign? Remind me? Every time the Georgia athletic department plane takes off, they make up stories about meeting with basketball coaches. They delete it every time they are wrong, which is all the time.. That’s why I’ve started a file printing out everything they get wrong and try to hide. I’m taking all the evidence to important people. Dawgpost and TotalUGA are so much more reliable, if you’re going to pay for any of that crap.

Yeah and uga was apart of the conversation alright, i remember seeing the highlights on espn as they were talkin about how that preseaon #1 ranking was getting abused in the second half and torched for 409 yards rushing! You were surely in the conversation and the only team on tv that day, that got it handed to them after a 28-12 lead was spotted to you! Only a fool would sit on this thread and not admit that uga is criminal u, and find a way to accuse a man who was cleared of all charges. Only at uga would you find such stupidity and ignorance. I agree with GT. PJ beat UGA once and did okay in the acc but he did that with gailey’s recruits. I seriously doubt he will be able to compete once those guys are gone. He has shown no evidence of bringing in any outstanding athletes either. Mediocre, yes but not great. Once nesbitt, thomas, and dwire are gone it will be back to the same old tech. I’ll give it to PJ. He is a good coach but it is way to difficult to recruit the necessary talent to run this offense. So basically GT traded a coach that was great at recruiting and bad at coaching for a coach that can’t recruit but can coach. Both will show similar results (once Gailey’s recruits leave). I wouldn’t set hopes too high techies because there is no sign of PJ being able to recruit high level talent and if that is so then last year and this year will be the peak of PJ’s coaching career. After that there will be a significant drop off in talent and production. So guys, enjoy next year because you probably won’t see one as productive until you fire PJ because of a 5,6,7,8 year losing streak to UGA.
