Clermont Lounge featured on Jan. 14’s ‘The Layover’ with Anthony Bourdain on Travel Channel

I previewed a portion of tonight’s Travel Channel edition of “The Layover” with Anthony Bourdain focused on Atlanta. Unfortunately, most of the first 11 minutes are shrouded in silence: the sound didn’t work. But the point is he spends 48 hours in a city and samples some of its wares.

Bourdain first visits Fat Matt’s Rib Shack. I hope he liked it. He also does some skeet shooting.

Later, he meets up with Sean Brock at popular high-end Southern eatery Holeman & Finch Public House in Buckhead, where only 24 burgers are available a night at 10 p.m. He name drops (but doesn’t have time to stop by) HD1, Richard Blais‘ church of the hot dog, and Empire State South, Hugh Acheson’s Midtown pad.

There are bits of advice about Atlanta from residents, who name drop neighborhoods such as Reynoldstown and Cabbagetown.  They talk about sweet tea, the art of tailgating and southern hospitality.

After Holman & Finch, Bourdain visits the Octopus Bar in East Atlanta, where he samples Sweetwater and Terrapin brews. He mentions Inman Park’s Victoryy Sandwich Bar, a popular place for the service industry.

The next morning, he has breakfast at Octane in Grant Park and reads the New York Times. (What? No AJC?)

Later, he tours Buford Highway Farmer’s Market with Blais. “I’m proud of this because it shows Atlanta is an international city,” Blais tells Bourdain as they marveled over the variety of food available there such as live peri winkle and durian fruit. Other food markets name-dropped; Sweet Auburn Market and Star Provisions.

He does drive-through at  El Taco Veloz in Doraville, then gives love to two other Buford Highway eateries; Northern China Eatery and Crawfish Shack Seafood. Others name-dropped: Iberian Pig, the Varsity, Thompson Brothers BBQ, Bacchanalia and the Brick Store. Later, the Colonnade is mentioned, too.

His final meal is at Miller Union on the Westside with Alton Brown. “I’ve never had a bad dish here – ever,” Brown says.

“Atlanta doesn’t know what it is yet,” Brown notes. “Here’s the problem with southern food. They just don’t want to talk about race. For so long, the iconic Southern dishes were cooked by blacks for rich whites. Knowledge was passed along only by black families. And poor whites.”

He finishes the night with Brown at the Clermont Lounge, which was recently featured on “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.” “This place should be a national landmark,” Bourdain says. interviews Blondie, the long-time stripper at the club who is known to crush beer cans with her boobs. “I built this city,” she says facetiously. She adds that the strippers are ages 29 to 66. “We all have great personalities,” she says.

“Reminds me of my grandmother,” Brown cracks, watching Blondie.

You need to correct your article – he was at the Octane in Grant Park that is tied with Little Tart Bakeshop on Memorial Drive. Not the Octane on Marietta Street on the Westside.

So glad that he went to BFM and not Dekalb. He should’ve tried the barbacoa at Taco Veloz, one of the better places for it in ITP. Although if he wanted a taco experience, try Fiesta Plaza. You can get carnita, asada, lingua five ways from Sunday.

@Kim….the article states he met Sean AT Holeman/Finch….not OF Holeman/Finch….reading is fundamental. Also, Alton was speaking the truth….much southern cuisine came from the hands of the black cooks and poor whites on the farm. My mother was raised on a farm in south Georgia and, based on my experience, Alton’s words ring true.

Alton Brown was on point. People actually think that Paula Deen created “Southern Food.” In reality, it’s called “Soul Food.” And yes, Blacks are the originators of it. But don’t get mad at his comments, get mad at the fact that Blacks didn’t have any choice but to create masterpieces out of the garbage that was given to us by slave masters. So that fried okra you crave, the peach cobbler and velvety smooth gravy you lay on like a blanket, prepare to pay homage to its true origin…Like it or not!

Love Anthony Bourdain and Love Atlanta. Lived there for 18 years and miss it terribly. Had to watch the episode. What Alton Brown said was true. It is what is it is. Kudos for going to Buford Highway Farmers Market. Best place for any kind of fresh fish you desire. Never visited Clermont Lounge but after seeing it on RHOA and the Layover, have to make it next trip to the ATL! Caught the shot at Paula Deen LOL

Personally I find the idea that all White Southerners could afford servants ludicrous. Also, never understood why people consider some of that stuff like souse or whoopie pies and all Southern. Like there weren’t farmers up north eating that stuff. Why I don’t know.

went to the clermont back in the 70’s with a couple of work buddies and one of them hooked up with a stripper that worked there,we went back a month or so later and he asked where his new found love was and goldie said they fired that slut, said she gave everybody in atlanta the clap. I still chuckle everytime i remember my buddies face and thats the truth….

Bourdain’s my personal anti-hero! For all you post Olympic Atlantan’s, Alton Brown is right, If you live in Cabbagetown, Edgewood, Kirkwood, East Atlanta; most people who lived there worked for rich whites on Peachtree and above and they were black or poor white. The food became part of the fabric of Atlanta and therefore defined soul food in the city.

Typical TVcrap. Why ask a bunch of YANKEE transplants about food in Atlanta. Fat Mats? Really? The Clermont Lounge?That crap hole is on par with the Varsity and the Aquarium. Nobody that really live here, goes there. There are so many great places on Bufurd highway and he gos to the Crawfish Shack/ Really? I am surprised he didn’t go to ESPN Sports Zone for their great burger and the Picadilly in South Dekalb Mall. What a joke! And honsetly, I had the cheeseburger at Holeamn Finch and alas, IT IS A F’N CHEESEBURGER, BIG WOOP. And Blais’s hotdog place, WOW, HOTDOGS!!! WOW!!!! Also, are there any WHITE POEPLE in Atlanta going to Falcons games??????

A little disappointed in the episode- Tony just mailied this one in to complete his contract with Travel Channel. I would have liked to seen a little more on Black Atlanta and not so much Hipster Atlanta. Glad to see he paid homage to the Strip Club Capital of the world!

Alton brought up one point that was glased over- Atlanta is truly like Singapore, both culturally and food wise. They should have spent more time on that angle. He was also right on southern/soul food cuisine- it was passed down by blacks and poor whites from the country who came to Atlanta during the Depression & WWII. Not too many rich white folks grew up eating grits!
