‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’ (’This Donkey Kicks’) recap: season 5, episode 11

In the real world, as opposed to reality TV, “Real Housewives of Atlanta” cast member Phaedra Parks would never ever do business with Kenya Moore knowing that Kenya has the hots for her husband.
But since these characters have to interact and since Kenya does video production, the producers surely “suggested” Phaedra use Kenya to produce her “donkey booty” exercise video.
No shock: it doesn’t go smoothly.
We clearly do not see the entire negotiation process. Kenya offers a $100,000 budget but I don’t know if she includes a “fee’ for herself or simply pads the budget to ensure some profit. She also appears to spring a back-end (no pun intended) fee on the profits of the video sales well into the process. She asks for what appears to be a reasonable 10 percent cut, especially since she sealed a distribution deal for them.
Phaedra, who felt the $100,000 budget was too high, acts all offended and says Kenya deserves no back end whatsoever. Apollo, more reasonably, said they could negotiate a lower fee perhaps in exchange for back-end profits.
“I handle multi-million dollar films,” Kenya said. “This is a drop in the bucket.”
Later, Phaedra retorts to the cameras, “She produces multi-million dollar films? I’ve never see any of them!”
Kenya also gets annoyed when Phaedra says she checked with Kandi Burruss‘ boyfriend Todd about the video since he also does production.
So Kenya, thinking Phaedra was the problem, goes to Apollo during Todd’s 39th birthday party. Apollo says things are okay, tries to mollify her. Phaedra keeps giving Kenya shady looks but being the classy woman she is, doesn’t confront her publicly – or at all.
When Kenya tries to get more info about Todd’s discussion with Phaedra, he begs off. Kandi is especially peeved, saying this is not the time and place to discuss business.
Next scene, we see Cynthia Bailey at her Bailey Agency, where she had cancelled a casting call for Phaedra’s video because she hadn’t been given enough information. She is not happy with Phaedra about Tweeting about the casting call when she had planned to nix it.
Kenya shows up, too, to tell Phaedra she is not comfortable with the situation. “I don’t work for free,” she said. Phaedra tries to spin it, saying she didn’t intend not to pay Kenya but wasn’t keen on a back-end deal. Kenya decides to bow out and walks out. No twirling this time, though.
“How am I supposed to work with someone who doesn’t respect my 20-plus years in this business?” Kenya says.
Congratulations Kenya, by the way, for keeping yourself in the A story – again. You’re virtually single-handedly keeping the season alive.
In other storylines:
- Kandi: she gave Todd a sweet 39th birthday, one year after they met. “He’s the teammate that I have always wanted,” she said. Awww…
- Porsha Stewart? No story line except for a pointless 30 seconds where she and her hubby talk again about babymaking. My wife noted that Porsha supposedly “just woke up” but is in full makeup.
- Cynthia: Besides what happened between Kenya and Phaedra and more or less forgiving Kenya, nothing at all for Cynthia.
- NeNe Leakes. She’s out in Hollywood trying to adjust to life there as a regular on “The New Normal.” She tells her ex-hubby Gregg she needs his support so she can focus on work. He said she has to let go and not be so hands on and give him a chance to do some of the stuff and take the stress off of her.

TEASER FOR NEXT WEEK
Kenya, knowing that she needs to keep sowing drama, decides to do her own exercise/booty video, well aware this will get Phaedra’s goat. Phaedra’s response: “Her booty is as lumpy as a bad bath of gravy.”
RATINGS
Go figure: last week’s 10th episode, the dullest to date this season, pulled in the season high number of viewers: 3.67 million viewers with a 1.8 rating for 18-49 year olds, doing far better than “Honey Boo Boo” at 3.08 million and 1.3 18-49 rating. Last year’s 10th episode drew 2.77 million viewers. The show is now averaging 3 million viewers this season. It is virtually even in total viewers to season four’s first 10 episodes.

Phaedra acts like her booty is the best thing since beans and cornbread. Just because she thinks her butt is all that, doesn’t mean that it is. She is on the plump side and she has a plump booty. There’s nothing special about that and I don’t know if there is a big market for women wanting to get a big booty. There are a lot of Black women that already have naturally round butts and most White women are not trying to have donkey booties. There are some of them that want bigger butts, but not enough to have those videos flying off the shelves.
Walter has told his side of the story of he and Kenya’s relationship and how he ended up on the show and Kenya has told her side of the story. He said that they dated 3 years ago for 3 months and she said that they have been dating mostly long distance for the last 2 years. so that means that they did date. None of us know which one is telling the truth, however, I do believe that Kenya is dealing with insecurities of getting old (amongst other things) and she desperately did want Walter to marry her but her ways and her antics, not to mention her constant pressuring him to marry her, was a big turn off for him. Kenya has psychological issues that manifest into noone wanting to deal with her. And until she get some real help for herself, she will alienate friendships, business dealings, and a potential good husband. And that’s for real.

Let’s put the donkey booty video in perspective. RHOA will make at least three shows worth of drama out of the video and its $100,000 budget. Each of the “housewives” makes well over six figures for the season. The video, its budget, and any potential profits (definitely not “millions”) are merely a drop in the bucket in comparison. Granted, I’m not a Kenya fan and direct to DVD movies can’t be supporting her lavish home and $1000 shoes. At least Phaedra is a practicing attorney even if she gets her fees from hood rats in cash in the courthouse parking lot.

@Regency, that’s it, Kenya does look like Natalie Cole..both very pretty.and stop talking about her being worried about getting “OLD” when you young heffers figure it out, being 40+ is the greatest time ever, most of us have lived through the dumb ish, you all are trying to figure out with your girlfriends, careers, men, children, all the above…been there done that…like Marlo (where is she..) said last season…Google Kenya Moore…and then compare her accomplishments to yours…thank you Kenya for “Carrying the show these days….Apollo, could do much better with Kenya, because Miss Donkey Booty has completely played out! Maybe with the birth of her second child,(Phaedra,) will become a respectful wife, Mom and Attorney, she has tried so hard to be relevant, that she looks, talks, and acts like Trash…what in the world does her (Pastor) Mom think, or is she an opportunist also..and since Kandi….”.time to move on Burris” keeps her head up Phaedra’s donkey booty….so much, get in that gym, and do the funky donkey a time or too….Kandi is too short to be carrying that much weight..and has the nerve to show up in white spandex…not a good look…and just because stilettos are in…they really only look nice on Nene, Cynthia, Kenya, and Porsha…the “Smalls” look like they are playing in their Mother’s heels….Team Nene!!!!!

When the truth hurts, people accuse me of being Kenya, LOL! Phaedra had the nerve to say that cynthia’s but looked like a pretzel dipped in chocoloate but CLEARLY that was not the case. She tries to hard to make the audience think she is SOMEBODY but had to get a jailbird to marry her. Her and Kandi are hard to watch when they make those ugly faces all the time. I will LOL if Kenya makes a work-out video, she already has a distributor, LOLOL! She is clearly making Phaedra look stupid. Also, Phaedra knew not to mess with cynthia and brought those ugly flowers to her so she wouldn’t get her but kicked at the restaurant, LOL! I am so glad WIG is gone and shebysheree, LOL

oh and Kandi looks a real hot altanta mess in a bikini. she has all of those dark splotches on her top of her feet, knees and belly. She should not have let todd show her with that flip cam. My eyes hurt after seeing that. Kandi is NOT attractive at all. she needs to put all her money to use and see a good dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

These are by far the best comments I have ever read on this show! I just wanted to commend the commenters. This is the first show where I actually agree with Kenya. I can’t stand Phaedra. She is always instigating. First she’s over listening and laughing with Cynthia over her disagreement with Kenya earlier in the season. Then she’s over with Kenya laughing with her over Cynthia. And she has the nerve to talk about her godliness one minute and then she walks around in a net and thong on the beach in Anguilla or has male “dancers” showing everything at Kandi’s party. Oh no… And they had the nerve to interview her on one of those BET Sunday morning gospel shows a few months ago. I was like, please! Kandi consistently continues to pick the wrong side in every fight on the show. First she teamed up with Kim against Nene and look where that got her. Now she appears to be team Phaedra in all things. She is too wealthy and well-known — in her industry — to be caught up with such.
It's worse than being called "Ms. America"...

Kandi likes to go against the stronger women, that is why she fought Ne Ne and Cynthia for nothing and now she is all smiles with them. Wig had to finally show her true self to Kandi before she got a clue and Kandi seems really hurt that Wig kicked her to the curb. Phaedra is a typical hypocrit. she brought a man giving himself head on tv yet tries to act like a southern bell . she didn’t learn nothing from the trip to Africa, crying those croc tears and then coming back to splurg on a two year old. How shallow.

Just to add…The bottom line is that if Phaedra and Apollo had shopped around and compared others production cost with Kenya’s production cost before they made any kind of agreement with anyone to produce their video, all of this mess would have been avoided. Phaedra and Apollo shouldn’t have made that verbal agreement with Kenya that they chose her to produce their video unless everything was agreed upon by all parties and a written contract was signed. No pre-production work should have taken place without a contract. Both parties handled this wrong.
