‘American Idol,” for the first time, decided to do a pre screening of the show a week before its debut and brought out the judges for a satellite Q&A session with Ryan Seacrest out of Los Angeles.

They held screenings in several major ciites, including Chicago, Boston, Dallas and Atlanta, where we landed at Sugarloaf Mills AMC with a few hundred “Idol’ acolytes, plus two former ‘Idol” contestants who live locally: season 2’s Vanessa Olivarez and season 4’s Bo Bice. Oliveraz is currently in two bands: Granville Automatic and country quartet Mama’s Blue Dress. Bice is leaving in two weeks from Conyers to spend a possible year-long stint in the starring role on Broadway for “Pump Boys & Dinettes.”

We saw a 45-minute cut-down version of what will be the debut next week in New York (two hours on Wednesday) and Chicago Thursday.  I sat in the third row. It was a little daunting to see Nicki Minaj’s mug hovering over me like an alien creature.

Here are a few impressions from the screening:

- Nicki is as colorful and polarizing as you can imagine. She is – not surprisingly – opinionated as all get out. She sucks the oxygen out of the room, which doesn’t seem to perturb Randy Jackson but exasperates both Keith Urban and Mariah Carey. She dresses wild. She makes funny sounds. She interrupts others. She’ll put on a faux British accent. This could be fun for awhile but could ultimately be exhausting.

- Nicki will flirt with guy contestants, even getting one to take off his shirt. But she can be empathetic and sweet as well. And boy, she does make faces. When a Mariah fan shows Mariah photos of the two of them, Mariah asks to get copies. Watch Nicki’s eyes bug out.

- The producers seem to purposely keep a man between Mariah and Nicki, at least in the Chicago and New York auditions we viewed. When Keith had to leave for a prior event, they stuck Randy between them. There is a segment where Mariah and Nicki frequently argue to the point that Keith says, “I feel like a scratching post!” Meow!

- Watch for the contestant who has a stuttering problem but a great voice that elicited applause from our audience. Also, there’s a woman who can not only sing country but rap “Super Bass.” Plus, there’s a dude who evokes a bit of William Hung, which is not a good thing at all. We see eight singers. In general, it’s the usual blend of bad and good.

- Keith is calm, collected and nice, with brief but incisive comments. Mariah has a bit of Paula in her and doesn’t appear to be too harsh on the contestants. Nigel Lythgoe earlier had said he feels Randy is the toughest judge up there. I guess it’s all relative.

- During that earlier press conference, Nigel noted that he was upset when he saw “The X Factor” provide how well each act did in the voting in relation to each other. He claimed that he wanted to do that but was told no by Fox executives, afraid it might suppress voting. He doesn’t believe that. He also plans to bring voting order to ‘Idol” this season but is bummed that he is playing catch-up to “X Factor.” He also would like to show regional voting stats if possible. Nigel in the press conference praised Phillip Phillips but warned that one single does not make  a career. He said there will be no hip-hop/rap on “Idol” and Jimmy Iovine will return as the main mentor.

- Bo Bice found Nicki a bit much, compared Mariah to Paula and really liked Keith.

- There was a Q&A after the screening. I don’t think we got too much out of it but Ryan did ask if there’d be a group performance number with all the judges, something “The Voice” does every season. Then he decided they shouldn’t answer that. It could be fun! Mariah had a cold, as she noted multiple times, and wore these ridiculously huge diamond earings that were so heavy, her ear lobes were hanging low. Randy had strange studs on his collar while Nicki wore what appeared to be the outside of the Partridge Family bus.

Watching the "Idol" Q&A from the big screen.

- There were a lot of Nicki Minaj fans at the screening and screamed when her name came up. She got a ton of laughs, too.

Morning!

Wednesday!

And reviewing the weekend….good for the Golden Globes honoring Ben Affleck for best picture and beat director when the Oscars embarrassed themselves by not giving him a director nom.

The Falcons tried to kill me this weekend. Seriously, I thought I would have a heart attack!

Me, too, Deirdre. I left during the third quarter to visit my sister, only to return to the drama at the end. Whew!

Agree about Ben Affleck, too. He was genuinely bowled over. And, I loved Adele’s reaction to winning her category. Such a seemingly real and down to earth individual.

Good morning!

Morning – Guess they couldn’t pick TWO best movies/directors and I’m so happy for Ben Affleck’s GG win. The Oscar Academy embarrassed itself shamefully by snubbing Affleck and Kathryn Bigelow. And the director of “Les Miz”, Tom Hooper, too – his movie won the comedy/musical category, and Globes “went to” (why can’t the just say WIN) Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman.

My favorite moment – when former president Bill Clinton showed up to introduce “Lincoln”.
Second favorite moment – Amy Pohler gushing, after the “Lincoln” intro, “That was Hillary Clinton’s husband!”

Favorite dress: Lucy Liu’s flower garden extravaganza.
Second favorite: Nicole Kidman’s apiary dream.

Dress fail 1: Halle Berry’s beach cover-up.
Dress fail II: Lena Dunham’s cumbersome tent.

Mercedes, I agree with your favorite moments. And what a hoot: “Hillary Clinton’s husband!”

I loved the black gown worn by Salma Heyak.

I particularly liked Anne Hathaway’s semi-tribute to Sally Field for defying typecasting by going from the Flying Nun to a 2 time Oscar winner.

And while Jodie Foster’s speech was moving and sincere, it seemed to jump back and forth between heartfelt and bitter.

I know it was just me, but I found Jodie Foster’s speech quite confusing. On Today this morning they said her publicist had to correct the impression she was retiring from acting.

Whatever Jodie Foster was trying to say, I think the teary-eyed actors in the room got it.

And I like her for standing by Mel Gibson, who is otherwise shunned by all Hollywood.

And, yes, I also liked the tribute to Sally Field.

Btw, has anyone here seen “Girls”?

I was a bit confusedl by Jodie F’s speech. I really like her, and she’s proven over and over to be a fine actress, and I do understand her feelings about the press trying to “out” her, since that’s her own private life and decision to make, but it was a bit rambling, even though it did bring a tear to my eyes a couple times.

I liked Salma’s dress too. Very flattering for her way-too-oversized top. Can’t remember the others I really liked. Thought Sally Field looked very nice, and would have loved Kerry Washington’s dress if the lining had just gone to the bottom of the dress. I liked the tea length very much. For me, the “flower dresses” didn’t get it.

I saw “Zero….” yesterday. Wish it had been 20 minutes shorter. The first half was long and a bit hard to keep up with, but man, once they boarded those copters -I was so tense felt like I was gonna pop open.

Mercedes: did you recognize Jennifer Ealy as the Diplomat who was blown up in the compound? I kept thinking she sure looked familiar, then towards her “end” I noticed the little mole on her lip, and the way the 2 front teeth kinda curve in at the middle – at one closeup I realized I was looking at Lizzy from “Pride and Prejudice”. I like her – a very versatile actress.

I’ve seen Girls a couple of times. Not really my cup of tea…or even vodka, for that matter. Lena Dunham is a talent actor(remember when they were called actresses and nobody took offense?)

As for Jodie Foster, she has tried so hard to keep her private life private that I understand her being a bit bitter. Since when does a public persona automatically mean your private life is fair game? Why does the public have the right to know? Curiosity is not an excuse.

Just reviewed some of the pix from last night. Kelly Cuoco’s beige beaded and tulle was beautiful; The dress was a little funky, but I thought Kate Hudson looked fabulous. But hands down, my fave dress was the beautiful coral with the gorgeous diamond necklace that Jessica Alba wore. Julianne Hough looked beautiful as well.

What was with the “breast shelves” that Jennifer (from “Hunger Games”) wore?

That should have been Jennifer Ehle – sp wrong!

I liked Kelly Cuoco’s dress but hated her makeup. Didn’t like Jennifer Lawrence’s dress but laughed out loud during her acceptance speech. “And thank you to Harvey[I'm assuming Weinstein]for killing whoever you had to kill to get me up here”

I thought Jessica Chastain’s dress was horrible and Kat McPhee looked sexy and gorgeous.

Yes, Sam-A, I have followed Jennifer Ehle’s career ever since she was Lizzy to Colin Firth’s Mr. Darcy in 1995. She was also in “Contagion”, “The King’s Speech”, and one of my favorite romantic movies, “Possession”. She is so the ultimate English rose, yet she was born in North Carolina.

Crazy, huh! She’s got such an English look, and a very English Mother – I couldn’t believe it when I saw she grew up in US.

Let me know when you see the new Tom Cruise film – it looks really interesting. Supposed to start in April, so I guess you won’t see it for awhile.

Saw in a review in the weekend papers that the new Mark Wahlberg/The Rock buddy film is “hilarious” – saw the preview, and it looks anything but funny! Didn’t look good to me.
