How did the Atlanta radio stations rank in ratings in 2012?

v103

Despite all the changes in the Atlanta radio market in 2012, the most-popular stations remained at the top of the heap.

The rest of the picture, though, isn’t as clear, as shown by recently released year-end audience metrics.

R&B/hip-hop station V-103 remained the top radio station in Atlanta last year, a dominance it has sustained for the past decade.

R&B station Kiss 104.1 came in a solid second with its best performance since Arbitron began people meter measurements in 2009. News/talk AM750 and 95.5 FM came in third, followed by R&B station Majic 107.5/97.5 and hip-hop station Hot 107.9.

Closely clustered after that are three pop stations: B98.5, Star 94 and Q100. They now have a fourth player in the hotly contested current hits battle: Power 96.1.

For folks wondering how some of the new stations are doing, four-month-old Power has opened strong, already in a tight race with Star 94 and Q100 from mid-September through early December. In the final pre-holiday four-week book, covering Nov. 8 to Dec. 5, Power had a 4.7 share among the 25-54 age group vs. 4.6 for Q100 and 4.5 for Star 94.

B98.5, despite not switching to all Christmas music right before Thanksgiving – as it has in past years — had its best 25-54 numbers of the year at 7.2 share, better than the comparable book in 2011.

Since it launched, All News 106.7 isn’t doing nearly as well as its predecessor format, pop oldies Atlanta’s Greatest Hits, bringing in about half to two-thirds of the music station’s ratings. It ranked 20th in the last ratings book.

And sports talk 92.9/The Game is drawing about one-third the listeners of Dave FM in its short run so far, ranking 24th in the most recent ratings. It has taken listeners away from AM stations 680/The Fan and 790/The Zone, which both saw their listener numbers slip in recent weeks.

Rock station 98.9/The Bone is doing better than when 99X was on that signal, which isn’t surprising since rock station Project 9-6-1 left the scene. But the signal is so much weaker than Project’s so consequently, so are its ratings. And the Q100-at-97.9-concept is doing worse than the 1980s/90s pop format Journey 97.9 that preceded it.

The departure of Dave and Project has also benefited the two other rock stations, 97.1/The River and Rock 100.5, both who have seen major ratings boosts.

New hip-hop station Streetz 94.5 is taking a small chunk out of direct rival Hot 107.9 so far. It’s averaging a respectable 2.3 share among 18 to 34 year olds from September through early December.

Stations that improved year over year (counting only those that did not change format): Kiss, Majic, B98.5, Star, Hot, Fish, River, Fan, Zone

Stations that slipped year over year: WSB, Kicks, Praise, Q100, WABE

Atlanta -based Cox Media Group, which includes The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, owns Kiss, WSB, B98.5 and The River.

Here’s the top 29 Atlanta radio stations, based on the average 6+ share over the first 48 weeks of 2012. Stations generally do not measure themselves by overall audience but specific demographics, typically 25-54 and 18-34. But the general numbers give you a basic feel for what direction a station is going and where it ranks compared to all other stations in the market.

I’m not sure who they’re “polling”. Pretty much everyone I’ve asked listened to Dave.FM when it was on the air. That makes it hard to believe those numbers are so low.

Nobody in my office or friends listened to Dave FM. Everyone likes 97.1 The River better. Numbers seem about right.

The comedy channel has yet to garner enough listeners to show up in the ratings. As for the morning shows, I don’t have data for the entire year for all listeners. I do have some 18-34 and 25-54 but really don’t have time to sift through it right now.

I’ve been listening to All News 106.7 since they came along. There is a big difference between a news station and a news/talk station. Each time a major story breaks, All News 106.7 is covering it. But, when I turn to WSB/750, one of their conservative talk show hosts is on the air.

Rodney – Do you know if they do ratings for certain times? I’m wondering if there were changes in ratings with all of the changes to the morning shows at V103 and Q100. I’m pretty sure The Bert Show’s ratings have gone down, I listen and it has been painful lately! Hoping the “dial” will let them know they need to step it up.

Apparently 97.1 The River has gone out and purchased some Led Zepplin cds to add to their playlist. Matter of fact they are quickly running Led Zepplin into the ground- much like they did whey they first started up and played The Eagles every other song.

I’m sure The Elvis Duran morning show will help bring ratings up for 96.1. Just started listening to them and they seem pretty solid. I think they’ve been around a while, but are new to the Atlanta scene and are a stronger than the other shows that have had everyone bale out.

Bring a AAA radio station to Atlanta. I can’t stand the “Hotel California” on the 8’s of the River. Rock 100.5 is just talk in the morning.

Since Dave FM left the air I’ll listen to NPR until they switch to classical. Then I just keep pushing buttons hoping I’ll find something I want to listen to for 3 or 4 minutes and then resume pushing. The comedy station is awful. The all news station covers everything in about 6 minutes. The River is annoying as hell. How a major metro market like Atlanta can have such bad radio is beyond amazing. Not exactly sure what the Dave demographic was but everyone I know was in it. At least bring back Mara Davis and her music. That will give me a few hours a day to enjoy the radio.

Yes, what about the morning shows? I don’t know what happened to Q100. It’s been terrible since Melissa and Jenn left. Sorry Kristen sounds and acts like a 14 year old. Listening to her makes me lose brain cells. She’s not the right fit for a main personality in a major city. I feel like I’m listening to a nervous 3rd grader over the PA, when she attempts to read the news. I somehow feel she was the reason behind Jenn’s departure. Bert doesn’t have anymore ideas left. Jeff has no one to play with, all of his wit goes right over Kristen’s head. Cassie… that voice is not radio material. Please revamp the show.

Welcome to the ATL, home of the worst radio plays in the US! Really spend some time in Philly, or LA or Memphis! This is the city that has never heard of B-sides, Jazz, Bluegrass, folk, VARIETY, etc etc.
True story-a sales person from a top 5 radio station that we ran ads on was in the store and I asked her why don’t you all stop playing the SAME 100 songs 24/7? She says ‘oh that’s what Atlanta wants’
And so goodbye 96 rock…
Thank the Lord for Ga State and Clark College on Atlanta FM!

Atlanta radio sucks. With the exception of the college stations and a few non-commercial stations (WRFG, WABE, etc), radio is either dead or dying. At least with talk and sports radio you know your gonna get TALK sprinkled in with a shlt-ton of the most annoying commercials you’ll ever be exposed to. And with the commercial music stations you get “all of today’s shlt music” sprinkled in amongst of bunch commercials and the chatter of wannabe comedians. The only thing of value they offer is the traffic reports.

I honestly don’t know why, in this day and age, with so much great music out there, anyone would listen to the crap commercial radio stations spew. But that’s just me. Enjoy sheeple! Enjoy!!

Thank god for the ipod, and internet radio.

I kept hoping the Regular Guys would go back to their old formula back in 2001. They should let Tim Andrews entertain us most of the time…and make the other three stop interrupting each other all the time..especially Eric and Larry…extremely ANNOYING..no wonder they are 21st..too bad..they used to be funny..

I wish we had a real oldies station besides 97.1 The River. It always seems to me that they have a playlist of about 20 different tunes that are just played over and over. Have always been a big Eagles fan but get tired of hearing Hotel California 20 times per day.

I have lived in ATL since 79, and this is the WORST radio market ever! I miss: Moby in the Morning, Z-93, 96 Rock, 94-Q, which is not as good as Star 94 was. WHY does Atlanta NOT have a “classic Oldies” or “Classic Rock” anymore? Go to Macon, or any other market and they have oldies/hard rock,etc..You would think the people would speak out! Thank goodness for Tune In radio! Go to 104.9 the surf in Ridgland, Sc or Big 98.3 Midway,Ga if you want to hear good music!!!!!
