Atlanta rapper Shawty Lo’s Oxygen special ‘All My Babies’ Mamas’

Atlanta rapper’s Oxygen special “All My Babies’ Mamas,’ which has yet to get a specific air date in the spring, is already receiving heavy backlash.

Why? He has had 11 children with 10 different women in what one person is calling “ghetto polygamy.” Here’s the original Oxygen press release from Dec. 26:

Oxygen Media announces production of a new one-hour special, “All My Babies’ Mamas” (working title), revealing the complicated lives of one man, his children’s mamas, and their army of children. Premiering in spring 2013, this real-life special from creative duo Liz Gateley and Tony DiSanto of DiGa Vision will capture the highs and lows of this extreme ‘blended family’ that is anything but ordinary, while also showing the drama and the passion behind life’s most unexpected situations.

“Oxygen will give fans an intimate look at unconventional families with larger than life personalities and real emotional stakes,” says Cori Abraham, Senior Vice President of Development, Oxygen Media. “’All My Babies’ Mamas’ will be filled with outrageous and authentic over-the-top moments that our young, diverse female audience can tweet and gossip about.”

This bold new series shows every second of the drama-filled lives surrounding a unique “modern” family unit, as they navigate their financially and emotionally connected lives. As the household grows, sometimes so does the dysfunction, leaving the man of the house to split his affection multiple ways while trying to create order. With humor and heart, this dynamically linked family must find a way to all get along… but sharing your man with several opinionated women is bound to create issues. Will there be a conflict over a family holiday, who needs school supplies and who holds the household finance purse strings, or can these feisty babies’ mamas band together and live peacefully as one family unit?

“All My Babies’ Mamas” was brought to Oxygen by Executive Producers Liz Gateley and Tony DiSanto, and will be produced by their company, DiGa Vision.

There are multiple petitions on asking Oxygen to kill the program  before it even airs.

The biggest one, posted by New York’s Sabrina Lamb, now exceeds 13,000 names. In part, it reads:

As dysfunctional and violent as so-called reality shows are, could you ever imagine a one hour spectacle where 11 children are forced to witness their 10 unwed mothers clamor for financial support, emotional attention and sexual reward from Shawty-Lo, the apathetic ‘father’?

Could you imagine that Oxygen Media, known for violent programming targeting young women with stereotypical images, would consider the embarrassment that these children will experience, being used as entertainment?

Could you imagine that Oxygen Media, would use a slur against mothers, fathers and children and entitle this debacle, “All My Babies’ Mamas”? Cori Abraham, Oxygen Media, Senior Vice President of Development wrote in a press release: “…..over-the-top moments that our young, diverse female audience can tweet and gossip about….leaving the man of the house to split his affection multiple ways while trying to create order… but sharing your man with several opinionated women is bound to create issues.”

Tragically, this day has come.

What is the difference between this train wreck and the other reality trash which clog the airwaves?

And it is these children…our children who will hold all of us accountable by allowing them to be exploited, internationally, in this manner. Our children will suffer from these negativity and for someone like you standing up for them and saying:

What You Can Do?

“Sign today to tell Oxygen that their viewers will not tolerate a show that exploits and stereotypes Black children and families, and we will boycott any advertiser who chooses to support the show.”

Another, led by Shericka Johnson, has compiled 808 names, as of this writing.

Why are we praising the demeaning behavior of “baby momma’s” living together as a modern form of polygamy with one man?

Oxygen released a statement:

“Oxygen’s one-hour special in development is not meant to be a stereotypical representation of everyday life for any one demographic or cross section of society.  It is a look at one unique family and  their complicated, intertwined life. Oxygen Media’s diverse team of creative executives will continue developing the show with this point of view.”

Shawty Lo whose real name is Carlos Walker, is hardly a big star. He’s has one 2008 album and a single top 10 rap hit to his name. He was also part of a group called D4L which had a novelty No. 1 hit in 2005 “Laffy Taffy.”

But he obviously know show to woo the women and appears to have never met a condom he’s ever liked.

One more: here’s a Syracuse University professor Dr. Boyce Watkins’ thoughts. It ends with this:

Let’s go ahead and kill the stupidity so Shawty Lo’s children can become better parents than him. Also, this story is a reminder that we must show appreciation to those powerful men who take their parental obligations seriously.  They don’t get the recognition they deserve, and they will never get a reality show.  So, if there is a strong black man in your life, please go and tell him “thank you.”

Knowing that is going to generate a fair share of nasty comments, please keep it civil or I will shut commenting down.

The do not really all live in one house. It is a setup for the show. But, worst of all, none of the babymamas are even remotely attractive. Also, the show will only feature the 11 babies fathered by Shawty Lo, and not any of the other babies that the babymamas have from other babydaddys.

Honestly, its not any worse than all those other ratchet reality shows. And believe it will get high ratings and people will watch it because drama sells.

What could be so interesting that I would want to watch a TV show about a “man” that has multiple children by multiple women and, correct me if Im worng, not married to any of them. This is just telling the young people its okay to go out and have lots of babies with different people. Just part of whats wrong with things today.

The U.S. media seems to have this rather SICK and insatiable appetite for portaying Blacks as irresponsible, undisciplined, uncouth “coons” and WE are none too happy to oblige, as we willfully submit to our OWN exploitation….for a STINKING few dollars and temporary “fame”. Then WE feed the monster by supporting and watching the BS. Until WE as Black people confront our own on their coonery and demand higher standards of each OTHER the larger “American” society will remain content as ever MARGINALIZING us through media. After all, the prison industrial complex must be fed! As long as WE fall in line with the stereotype it makes it THAT MUCH EASIER to gun you down in the streets, cut resources to your education, dish out unequal justice and all the other things. Notice I shift from “we/us” to “you/your”. They CANNOT and WILL NOT get mine! Like Dr. Boyce said. Many of us out here know what’s going on, and while it might be seen by the weak as us looking down our noses at them, the strong knows it’s simply refusing to be pulled down with the filth. WAKE the F up “Shawty Lo”! YOU are a disgrace like so many others who perpuate this BS!

Who says one man can’t have 11 children with 10 different women? Society? Wake up. This is 2013 and if you don’t like the show, DON’T WATCH IT! It won’t make this family situation and many others like it any less real.

I’d like to thank Oxygen for legitimizing every negative stereotype associated with being a black male. It is not racism if it’s true!! Truly unbelievable what some people will do do for 15 minute of fame. This is a sad day to be an African American male.

Wow, just when you thought the stereotype of Atlanta as being nothing more than a big ghetto, here comes more evidence that it’s just that. I can’t imagine what people across the country must think of our city. Truly an embarrassment.

This is pathetic. The fact that he has 11 kids by 10 women shows how pathetic he is. But its not like he’s making any money rapping so I guess he’s gotta get it someway

Here’s to some good weave-pulling, noodle-necking, bitch-slapping, grill-wearing, pants around the knees, “oh no you ditn’t” entertainment. Maybe Miss Monica Pearson will feature it on her awful show “Monica Pearson Close-ups”…which would be more aptly titled “Closeups of Monica”.

Love and Hip Hop Atlanta, Real housewives of where ever, Basketball wives, this crap draws viewers. For a show about a dude with 10 baby mommas, hell, they could have had an NBA or NFL player with more notoriety than this fool (Shawty Lo) play the lead role. Reality(Trash) TV sells right now. This show will get it’s share of viewers who are curious to see this newest train wreck.

Shawty needs a vasectomy and if he’ll have it I’ll chip in to pay! It’s sad that these children won’t have much of a life and also that one of the women was stupid enough to do it twice!

If the parents want to show their ignorance then they should be allowed to do so. My issue is when they involve the children in this public forum. The kids didnt ask to have knuckleheads for parents so the least the TV company could do is not allow them to be exploted. This isn’t a black thing because you have Honey Boo Boo, red neck wives and Jersey shore etc;. The whole reality show thing is crap.

We already have The Real Housewives Of Atlanta, Totally T-Boz, The Sisterhood and countless other shows. No wonder that people think Atlanta is the most ghetto city in America. Also people wonder why African Americans are stereotyped? Well it’s not to hard to figure out. This show is way over the top but I’m sure that those ten ho, ho, ho girls are very proud of their accomplishment of being on this show while we the taxpayers support their offspring.

Here we go again!!

As a white man who’s dated several beautiful black women im often told “i perfer white guys because they offer a better future and treat me better”. With all the violence against black women, and all the unwead mothers, can you really blame them!? To all the good standup black fathers and men out there, good job, keep it up, but u really cant blame other races for being predjuice against you when the stats prove our concerns are valid..

I signed Sabrina Lamb’s petition. Let’s stop this buffoonery and let Shawty Lo and his ignorant harem know that their behavior is NOT okay and we certainly don’t want to enrich them by watching that garbage on TV. I encourage everyone to do the same.

I think the appeal for all these trashy shows about ignorant people is that it makes us feel better about ourselves. And we can spend our time criticizing them, instead of pushing ourselves to be better people, parents, etc. And also the rubber neck syndrom, that makes us want to watch a car wreck. Too many channels, not enough decent content. Oh well, I gotta go watch Andy Griffith now.

I’ll watch if it’s entertaining enough. I’m not threatened by this show and it does not play a part in how I live my life what so ever.

Also, there are so many reality shows showing the tragic lives of anyone and everyone i.e. Mob Wives (Italian), Jersey Shore (Italian+), Honey Boo Boo (White folks), Amish Mafia (religious White folks), American Gypsy (??), Shahs of Sunset (Persian), Basketball Wives (multicultural groupies) Real Housewives of Miami (Latino), RHO Atlanta (AA), RHO New Jersey (Italian) and lets not forget the one that started it all: RHO Orange County that introduced us to white women behaving badly before branching off into NY.

American television will put ANYONE on as long as they can make people laugh and talk. Well keep it coming!!!!

At some point the “Government” has to step in and stop the madness with the careless behavior of men and women, who needs a “Hugh Family” with the state of the economy???? Shawty Lo has no morals…he has the “Hit It And Quit It Mentality” that most men with Low Self Esteem does…..Ignorant Behavior which is probably a “Generation Curse” in his family….how sad.

I really feel bad for the kids. They are being exploited. In school they will get bullied & teased for being apart of the most ratchet reality family. You can already see Shawty fam will make Keshia Cole family look like the Huxtables. I doubt if Shawty was really in any of these kids lives before this show. If I was 1 of the baby mamas I would be embarrassed & ashamed of allowing myself to be #5, 6, 7 or 10th.

Who knows?

I don’t know why black people are making a big deal out of this because it is about a black man with multiple girlfriends & kids…I didn’t hear white people making a big fuss over the Sister Wives show because it was about a white man with multiple “wives” & kids! It doesn’t matter what color the man is, as long as the women are ok with being treated like that, it’s no one else’s business.

Boycott oh h3ll no! Folks cannot listen, dance, emulate the hip hip lifstyle, then gets pissed when somebody exploits a segment of that lifestyle. This is the black community plain and simple, maybe not all, but a good segment nonetheless. I applaud the producers and Shawty Lo for finding a niche in the market. rappers exploit women all day long everyday and they shake their azzes in enjoyment. “bandz that male her dance”. Come on sing it with me!

This is just another reality show that exploits blacks…like someone said a lot the the rappers of today are the new coons…that replaced steppin fetchin. White folks laugh at the hanging pants and other hip hop culture and we know they profit off of it. Who was the italian guy producing this Tony Disanto and is the woman white, Liz Gateley. Come on do you see Asians making fools of themselves on reality TV? Do blacks need money so bad that they allow themselves to be exploited on Jerry Springerm, Maury, Bill Cunningham, Jeremy Kyle and other shows like that. During the 70s we had pride and Black Power; we would not be caught dead doing this stuff

I don’t know if you realize this, but this the U.S.A., where social and moral standards are viewed through a White lens. Hence, the whole of White America RARELY IF EVER suffers because of the actions of one or a few. Hell, it’s hard to get White America to harbor any REAL outrage at Timothy McVeigh for doing what he did, yet say “911″ and people STILL fume. So much so some chick pushed a guy of the subway platform to his death last week because he “looked like a Muslim”. Whites cannot bring themselves to remain enraged at Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold after their carnage. But say “O.J.” ( who was aqcuitted by the way) and they get a whole different look in their eyes. So let’s not pretend.

I would address the other guy up top who I guess thinks he gets some “cred” for dating a couple or few Black women in his life. Ii will just say this to him. It is NEVER justified to prejudge an entire people for any reason. I don’t care how many “thugs” you see with their pants sagging. Let me tell YOU and speaking as a Black man. Black women have become just as susceptible to propaganda are far as who is “better” for them as Black men are who as soon as they achieve a little status go out and get themselves a White woman. THAT attitude is nothing more than SELF-HATRED implanted from the moment we set foot on these shores up through today using tools of the MEDIA as I stated earlier under another screen name – “KnuckleUp”. I’m just saying love who you love, regardless of race, religion or whatever. I have no problem with that whatsoever. I also however have no problem laying it on the table, because truth be told you speak from a privileged position as far as “American” society is concerned whether you want to acknowledge it or not. There is an entire slew of us out here making six figure salaries putting our kids through college, going to baseball games and church outings, managing investment portfolios and other things, not trying to be “seen” in the media or anyone’s courtroom. Add to that, becoming master navigators of the oftentimes murky waters of life where we see obstacles CONSTANTLY thrown in front of us to trip us up. You don’t know the half.
