Former Grant Park denizen and “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” host Ty Pennington has signed on for a new monthly show on Atlanta-based HLN.

Dubbed “American Journey,” the series will debut January 12 at 8 p.m. and repeat again the next day. It will air monthly.

According to the HLN press release:

American Journey covers stories of individuals and communities who have found inventive and surprising ways to address today’s challenges by applying the lessons of American pioneers. Hosted by Pennington, the series will follow these fascinating people (part of a growing subculture of entrepreneurs and creative thinkers) as they attempt to re-invent America.

HLN General Manager Scot Safon said the show will fit into the HLN oeuvre of spotlighting what’s good and inspirational in America. “Ty’s television work demonstrates a great understanding of the American generosity, compassion and creativity that helps lift people to new levels, making him the perfect fit for this series,” Safon said in the press release.

Pennington broke it big in 2000 on TV with TLC’s ‘Trading Spaces,” then moved to Los Angeles in 2003, landing a gig hosting ABC’s hit show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” Over eight years, megaphone in hand, he presided over more than 200 builds.

The final episode hosted by Pennington aired December 2011. Early last year, he was on the cast of the now canceled “Revolution” ABC talk show, which lasted only six months.

HLN has been tweaking its lineup the past year. Here’s a recap of some of the changes:

November, 2011: Joy Behar leaves HLN.

May 22, 2012: Clark Howard joins “Evening Express” with Ryan Smith, Isha Sesay

September 24, 2012: Vinnie Politan’s “Making It In America” debuts

October 11, 2012: HLN acquires ABC’s “What Would You Do?” and adds “Nancy Grace Mysteries”

Mann, Headline News has gone down hill just like The Weather Channel. Good luck I will not be watching.

HLN.. I had to stop and think if that was the shopping channel HSN. They’ve lost their branding ever since dropping “Headline News” but honestly, I always thought the original “CNN2″ brand was a good one. It was a very solid channel back then with solid anchors. Now, not so much.

JJ. Them were the days. Lynn Russell and crowd. Now it’s mostly junk. With the exception of Robin in the morning, which I’d only watch for a minute or two, there’s no point. Wonder when Clark will leave that place.

I couldn’t stand that Ty idiot back when he was on Trading Spaces. Another reason not to watch HLN. And what’s up with that picture? Ty looks like he’s been buying too much product from Walter White.
