Season 8 winner Kris Allen is set to perform at Eddie’s Attic Jan. 20 and a recent head-on car accident won’t stop that. He broke his wrist, which means no guitar playing any time soon. Check out a photo here.

In better news, he Tweeted that he and his wife are expecting a baby.

Kris Allen @KrisAllen

Yes I got in a really bad wreck tonight and yes I’m having a lil baby. #gonnabeadadd

Rolling Stone caught some blind auditions with Usher and Shakira subbing in for Cee Lo Green and Christina Aguilera on “The Voice.”  Atlanta’s Usher had this to say:

“You can’t really compare my style to anybody,” Usher said of his approach to coaching. “My style is more military than anything, because I’m all about the preparation and have always been. I rehearse a million times to be prepared. My style is to make them understand the seriousness of the craft and that they have the very best opportunity to be the greatest or the worst, depending on how you take it.”

Shakira says she’s hands on:

“While I’m coaching my team I tend to focus on the detail. I don’t know if it’s maybe because of the female condition, but men are more focused on the general aspects, and women tend to sort of focus on details a lot. And so when I’m giving directions to my contestants I’m particularly focused on details.”

Ryan Seacrest hosted the New Year’s Rockin’ Eve for the first time minus Dick Clark, who was given a very comprehensive tribute earlier in the evening. I caught him singing along to Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” Strange. With Justin Bieber there, too, Seacrest’s show pulled in the best ratings in 12 years during primetime. (They don’t have immediate numbers for the 11 p.m. hour)

He got a baby by breaking his wrist? Funny, I thought a stork was involved.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to all. Been away for a while. Major issues with a sister, so may be in and out even now. Anyway, hope everyone has had a good holiday season.

I am looking forward to our next season of Idol. All the pretenders have left the stage, so bring it on!!

Sorry to hear about Kris Allen’s accident but congrats on the future baby.

Happy New Year guys! Glad this popped up – I came back Friday from 6 days off and couldn’t find anyone then or Monday! Thanks Cris for breaking wrist so there’d be a post!

Uncharacteristically, I saw “This is 40″ over the holidays, and while there’s a lot of real gross out stuff, it was actually really funny. Paul Rudd was adorable. Saw the Matt Damon film yesterday, and I liked it a lot. Also saw the Barbra S film and was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it (usually hate Seth Rogan movies).

Not much time left now. “Downton Abbey” back this coming Sunday, “Walking Dead” soon (not sure of date”, and lots of other first runs – yeah. I’ve actually kinda enjoyed nothing new on Sunday nights, have caught up a little bit with “Good Wife” – I’ve sure missed it, but it was my sacrifice for watching too many shows on Sunday (”DA”, “WD”, “Rvenge”, “A. Race”.= whew!

Thanks, D. Not yet, but we are working on getting her some help.

Kris Allen article caused me go to my CD collection and dig out my David Cook album. It was really good. Too bad he did not have the staying power/material/whatever to maintain a presence.

Harriett, I hope the problem with your sister isn’t too serious! The past couple years have touched most of us in bad ways, with losses of relatives/parents, jobs, pets – but seems like we’re a pretty sturdy bunch in the long run!

Instead of a Happy New Year, I’d be satisfied with a calm, boring one. Someone emailed me a cartoon: Mom talking to young daughter, “Let’s pretend 2012 never happened.”

As Sam-A pointed out, many people here had a bad last year. Ran into a friend at Costco earlier today who had collapsed on the streets of New York with a stroke two days before Christmas. Fortunately she was with a friend who recognized the symptoms and got her to an ER at one.

Harriet, I remember what David Cook sounds like but have no memories of Kris Allen’s voice or songs.

Look forward to Downton Abbey on Sunday!

The Honey Boo Boo stain may be lifted from Georgia when an even tackier show, “Buckwild”, starts on Thursday. The NYT has a big story on the show in today’s paper, “Feeling Dragged Through the Mud, as MTV comes to West Virginia: A Fighting-and-Swearing Portrait in a New Series Provokes Anger.” Aming the “reality” show characters is a former prom king turned garbage collector. The creators/defenders of the show see it as “a good-natured romp by exuberant young people,”

My sister had to stop working toward the last part of September, due to severe back problems. She’s lived with me for the past 17 years, as we are both divorced and happily old enough not to have social calendar issues. :) Anyway, the lack of her job and constant staying at home with nowhere to go began to wear on her and she became increasingly depressed. She is under a doctor’s care with her back, and that doctor tried two different anti-depressants, which were disastrous. The side effects kept her from sleeping, adding anxiety to depression, and eventual pretty bad emotional meltdowns. She’s never been social, with her only social life really being the restaurant where she was a server. Now that that contact is gone, she’s been spiraling downward and now is going to require hospitalization. I just hope they can find the right kinds of meds to help her and get her stablized. She’s always been dependent and that has really grown into my having to be an intermediary with her doctor, etc, and my whole holidays were spent at home with this situation. I find coming back to work almost liberating today. It sounds like a bad case of holiday blues, but it began before the holidays. We are awaiting a bed in our hospital right now.

Mercedes: How lucky your friend was to be with someone so aware of the consequences and realizing how important the first 30 mins after a stroke are to regaining health, mentally and physically!

Harriett, I’m so very sorry. Without going into lenghty details, I am very understanding of your situation and know exactly where you are coming from!

Can you tell me if one of the bad drugs was Cymbalta. I understand it was originally used for depression, but now being advertised for muscle and joint pains. Since my blood problems/hospitalization of Feb 2011, I have not been allowed to (ever again) use NSaids for my arthritis, and my Dr recently suggested Cymbalta. I am wary of taking any thing related to “anti depressant” so want to know more about it before even considering it.

Have a good evening everyone.

Harriett

No, Sam, it was not Cymbalta. Zoloft was one of them and it did not stop the depression and only kept her awake at night.

Talk to y’all tomorrow.

Harriett, so sorry to hear about your sister’s problems. New year’s eve I spent 8 hrs (EIGHT hours) at our Piedmont Hospital ER for what turned out to be a minor ailment (but it hurt like hell and I never got to see a doctor!) and during one moment I was left close to a monitor listing all the patients and their reasons for seeking help, and A LOT of people were listed with “depression” and “Suicidal thoughts” (so much for HIPAA)

Thanks, D. I will. She wants to go and that is good. It’s just the waiting now that is wearing on her and me, too. Being at work today was good, even though I was swamped.

Thanks, everyone, for your concern.

Happy New Year! Hope everyone is well.

Harriett, sorry to hear the emotional scarring your sister is experiencing. I too hope they find the proper medication that will assist her in being productive for her on mental well being. You are a true sister, doing what a sister should do. Be strong, and inspirational for your sister.

Thanks, Pitchy! I am hanging in there. She is so sweet and has been willing to do anything she can to help herself, but some things are just out of your control. The fact that she’s so willing makes this not as difficult as it could be.

EXACTLY, Harriett! She’s willing to assist herself to the best of her ability and not solely relying on you to make things better. Her participation speaks volumes. Hope all the difficulty subsides quickly.

Morning!

Just took my grandson to the airport. He and his parents will be spending 3 days in Disney World then back here for 3 days, then home to San Jose. Our next visit will be for his birthday in Feb. I am currently dismantling the Christmas tree.

I am also looking forward to the beginning of Idol. Not sure I’m going to like it this year but, as Harriett always says, I’ll stick with it to the(hopefully not) bitter end.

I already know w/o watching that Minaj is going to grate my nerves. I so hope she gives constructive criticism, doesn’t make too many googly eye expressions, and speaks in her normal voice. If not, I may have to mute her each time she speaks.

Rodney, will you review “Elimination Night” by Anonymous for us?
According to USA Today, the book “features a sociopathic host, a macho ex-judge who’s launching a competing show, and producers manipulating not only contestants but judges and crew.”

I have a copy of it but haven’t read it yet. It’s supposedly written by a former “Idol” person who was around season 10.
