Three Atlanta-based reality shows debut on Jan. 1: ‘Double Divas,’ ‘Totally T-Boz,’ ‘The Sisterhood’

Reality television blossomed after “Survivor” debuted in 2000 and has expanded into dozens of sub genres. Music shows. Paranormal activities. Auctions and pawn shops. Weddings.a

Three new shows debut Tuesday follow particular archetypes – all with metro Atlanta ties and all targeting women.

Let’s break them down:

sisterhood-cast“The Sisterhood”9 p.m. Tuesday TLC

Descriptive style: Bring ladies with strong personalities together and let the fur fly!

A gentler cousin to: “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.” “Mob Wives.” “Basketball Wives.”

What makes this one special: The focus is on five diverse metro Atlanta women who are preacher’s wives. As a result, the women say they are held to higher standards. This means no cursing and physical violence, as seen on other shows, but they do get into verbal fisticuffs. Early standout is Tara Y. Lewis, whom another cast member dubs “bananas.”

Quotes: “People expect me to have it all together. I should never struggle. I should never go through anything. It’s the complete opposite. We are ordinary women with ordinary problems.” – cast member Christina Murray

“The only thing we agree on is we all love God. Everything else is up for chance.” – another cast member Domonique Scott

T- boz 2012“Totally T-Boz” 8 p.m. Tuesday TLC

Descriptive style: Follow a celebrity to show that he or she is just like you and me – or not.

Daughter to: “Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels.” “Run’s House.” “Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is.”

What makes this one special: Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins was part of one of the biggest girl groups of the 1990s: Atlanta’s TLC. But after key member Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes died in 2002, T-Boz suffered a divorce and debilitating effects of sickle-cell anemia as her career foundered. In 2007, a life-threatening brain tumor in 2007 stripped her of her speech, her sight, her hearing and her balance. But she recovered and moved to Los Angeles, hoping to get back into the music business.

Quote: “This is my story as I work to rebuild my life, my career and being the best mommy I can be for my daughter Chase. I’m not alone. I brought some crazy family and friends along to get myself together because I really need that help.” – T-Boz

double-divas“Double Divas” 10:31 p.m. Tuesday sneak preview Lifetime (regular time will be 10 p.m. at January 10)

Descriptive style: Hone in on an interesting small business with memorable business owners.

Evokes: “Pawn Stars.” “Duck Dynasty.” “Say Yes to the Dress.” “Cake Boss.”

What makes this one special: Georgia natives Molly Hopkins and Cynthia Richards run Kennesaw’s LiviRae Lingerie, fanatically focused on ensuring women wear the right bra. Molly is prone to critiquing women, even strangers, if their bras don’t fit correctly. Cynthia is the mad inventor, coming up with ideas such as a marketable bra for men. They’re sassy and dripping with Southern honey.

Quote: “I honestly believe I have probably seen more boobs than Hugh Hefner.” – Hopkins.

Everybody wants to be on tv. None of the above shows sounds like they will be lasting for an ample amount of time. I won’t be tuning in. What has happened to the real tv shows where you had to rehearse and remember lines? I’m so tired of “REALITY TV”.

The mother in that horrible dress looks like she could use a better bra herself.

The production money for these shows would be better spent on Falcons tickets.

Although I am not an avid reality TV watcher, I hope T-Boz does well. I read she had gone through some difficulties in the past.

Not only is there nothing to watch on broadcast TV anymore, there’s not even anything to watch on satellite/cable.

I drive by that “LiviRae Lingerie” in Kennesaw all the time. I guess I’ll watch their reality show. The show’s premise seems corny, but, what the hey, aren’t all reality shows?

Is Atlanta becoming the home of trash television?

moving on, more Atlanta trash to follow, I’m sure… the empty house next door to me has been let to a mother/daughter team who will appear on “Rich and Big in Atlanta” (sorry, forgot the proper title, which is based on a Texas show)

Are there no more script writers any more, ones who could give us drama, action shows, GOOD comedies – real “sitcoms” that are actually funny “situations”, not just a bunch of one-liners about sex? Any time there’s a new show that’s good it gets cancelled. They take away the soaps, then the nighttime soaps like Desperate Housewives and Brothers and Sisters. The only good new comedies are Modern Family and The Middle. And then you just get into them and they start wih repeats. But everybody and their grandmother can have a reality show or a talk show, whether they’re famous or not. I think I’ll pitch a reality show about the life of a single woman trying to make ends meet on disability payments. That should be just about as interesting as some of the other shows. Oh wait… I don’t use the “F” word every couple of seconds or scream at my neighbors. Never mind.

Wow Sassy you sure have some hate toward Cynthia! I noticed you have made comments on another blog saying the same thing….why? It almost seems to me you must know her personally and are maybe trying very hard to hurt her and her show! I saw the sneak peak and from what I saw she does not deserve such viscious comments. I wouldnt call yourself “sassy” more like “bully”! I for sure will be watching! I think this show deserves a second watch.
