While I was on vacation, “Idol” sent me this note six days ago. There is an advanced screening on January 9 at Discover Mills (apparently now Sugarloaf Mills) in Atlanta, a week before the actual debut.  I wouldn’t be surprised if this is already full but you can certainly try to RSVP. A live Q&A with the judges will be available on www.livestream.com or www.americanidol.com.  I will attend the local event for sure.

This is clearly an attempt to generate some advance buzz for a show that in years past hardly needed any.

In other “Idol” news, Phillip Phillips‘ “Home” has sold three million downloads. And he won’t be performing on the Fox New Year’s Eve special. Instead, “X Factor” Tate Stevens will sub in. Why the last-second scheduling change? Dunno.

***

I can’t imagine Britney Spears will return for season three of “The X Factor”. Why? She was ineffectual and barely said anything on the show. At least Demi Lovato showed some personality. US magazine claims she won’t be because really, did she earn her $15 million?

Britney didn’t offer much in the way of judging but with what normally passes for judging on these shows, i don’t know if that’s a bad thing!

She was definitely a better mentor than Demi.

Morning!

I think I’ll just skip the screening party and watch the show on tv like the rest of the country. I guess they’re feeling a little desperate. I would be to if I had been “stunt casting” the judges.

Good Morning!
Britney may not have said much, but her mentee reached the final two, right? She seemed warm and motherly and gavce good advice.
Demi came off as screechy and immature. Berating Simon for his 50+age (”I’m 21 and therefore I know best” was her motto on the show)can’t have endeared her to him. Also, her makeovers and wrong song choices sank her mentees early/

Discover Mills sounds like a beyond-exurb and therefore something I don’t care to go to.

Apart from the must-see “Les Misérables”, also opening today and worth seeing is “Promised Land”.Directed by Gus van Sant, and starring Matt Damon and Frances MacDormand as two slick Big Energy employees who talk hard-up farmers into allowing their land to be used for fracking. When Hal Holbrook, as crafty school teacher, asks people to reconsider the potential damage caused by pumping poisonous chemicals in the ground, and a private “environmentalist” (John Krasinski) arrives with pictures of dead cows, people take notice.

“Parental Guidance” is a must only for 6-year with highly developed sense of potty-humour.

So I should just stick to seeing The Hobbit again. Thanks Mercedes.

Britney… LOL

Screening parties = it will be more about the judges this season.

JT, did you see “The Hobbit” (better named “The Dwarves”) in 3D-48 frames? if so, reaction?

Yes. I saw it twice, once 3D-48 frames once just plain old 3D. I enjoyed it at 48 frames, but I’m not as into that type of thing as many people are. I did notice a difference, but was more impressed with the theaters comfy love-seats, better sound, and in theater waiters than with the 48 frames bit. For someone that is “into” modern technology sometimes I’m just not as impressed with it as I probably should be.

In other news, Fontella Bass died, at only 72. One of my erliest idols.
Loved “Rescue me”.

Mercedes: Saw the Barbra S movie – and I actually enjoyed it. Just bored, and it seemed the lesser of evils, but I had a good time. I abhor musicals, and the end of holidays are depressing enough, so not interested in “Les Mis”, and I’m not a Tolkein fan, though I sat thru the 3 LOTR movies with my sister, who’s a huge fan, but even she thought “Hobbit” was just okay.

Will probably see “Promised Land”, and dying for Bin Laden bye-bye film (I have a hard time remembering movie titles, as you might be able to tell). Still my fave this year is “Moonrise….”.

Rickster, when are you starting the countdown to Idol? I’m looking forward to it.

Morning!

My CA son, d-i-l and grandson are heading here from the airport. I will be chasing a toddler for the next few days. I’ll check in at naptime….unless I’m napping, too! ;-)

Hi guys! A couple of replies from last thread… thanks, Mercedes, for the wrapping stand scoop. I got very behind on reading, and must have missed that post from Rodney. Interesting concept – wonder who else they had wrapping besides Bo?

Sam, hi back! Yes, I have been MIA for a while… work stress. :-( And we are still twins on most things. Remember, I didn’t watch Kelly’s season or she might be my all-time fave. But to me, Carrie’s season was just magical (and the only one I’ve ever watched that turned out “right”… IMO, anyway. ;-) )

And G, yes, I started to take a little tiny jab but then thought what the heck, it’s Christmas, I’ll shut up for a change. LOL. ;-) (Though I do think pp was VERY lucky to be handed such a good song. “Home” would’ve been just as huge no matter who sang it. One of those catchy, stick-in-your-head hits that transcends the artist…. :-) )

And Deirdre @7:19 – oh, I could not agree more!!! The stunt-casting seems SO desperate to me. And I don’t like audition episodes enough to fight the crowds… I’m perfectly content to wait a week and watch on my own tv, where I can fast-forward. :-)

Adam Lambert, on a high horse, criticizing “Les Misérables” a) for not using “good enough” singers and b) recording the performances live, which means they are not as pleasing to the ear as studio doctoring would be. Adam doesn’t get it. Or maybe he thought he should have been asked to co-star?
