Over the past two years, the “Good Day Atlanta” on-air staff has gone through a few changes. The latest departure: Cheryl White, a long-time traffic and weather anchor.
White has been with Fox 5 for 15 years.
She posted a message on her public Facebook page earlier today, where more than 200 people have made comments:
It’s been a privilege working on Good Day Atlanta for so many years. December 28th will be my last day. I wish continued success to the entire Good Day team.
Fox 5 is seeking a replacement but the new job requires more multimedia duties.
Others who have left “Good Day Atlanta” over the past two years include anchor Suchita Vadlamani (still in Atlanta but not in media), anchor Mark Hayes (now anchoring in Dallas) and “Road Warrior” Stacy Elgin (raising her twins). Arrivals include anchors Ron Gant and Gurvir Dhindsa.
Here’s White’s current bio on the Fox 5 website:
Cheryl White is a traffic and weather anchor for Good Day Atlanta.
Cheryl has been guiding Atlanta drivers through rush-hour gridlock since 1997. And if Cheryl sounds familiar, you’re right! Before going in front of the camera, she worked behind the microphone at several radio stations in Atlanta.
When she’s not tracking your commute, Cheryl is often tracking your weather. In 2006, Cheryl earned her Certificate of Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University, and has since become an integral part of the FOX 5 Storm Team. She is currently a member of the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society.
Cheryl wakes up while most of Atlanta is still sleeping to get ready for reports starting at 5 a.m. How does she make it all look so easy? Cheryl draws upon her vast background in news, traffic, and weather; which includes over a decade of experience in Atlanta and five years as a television news and weather anchor in Indiana.
A graduate of ISUE, Indiana State University-Evansville, Cheryl enjoys flower gardening and needle arts in her free time. And if there’s a fire, Cheryl is a good person to have around since is also a graduate of the Roswell-Alpharetta Public Safety Fire.
Ratings are about the same for “Good Day Atlanta” in December 2012 vs. December 2011.
Cheryl now resides in Lilburn with her husband.
Other “Good Day Atlanta” items of (relatively) recent vintage:
12/27/10: Suchita Vadlamani leaves “Good Day Atlanta”
3/8/11: Gurvir Dhindsa returns to WAGA-TV
9/8/11: Stacey Elgin is out at Fox 5
10/10/11: Joanne Feldman takes over for Jeff Hill on ‘Good Day Atlanta.’
4/5/12: Mark Hayes departs “Good Day Atlanta.”
4/16/12: Mark Hayes joins NBC affiliate in Dallas.
9/24/12: Ron Gant becomes an anchor at “Good Day Atlanta.”

Fox 5 is obviously cleaning house with their new management. They are getting rid of all the veterans, so they can make room for others who can’t even read a teleprompter! Good Day Atlanta is nothing like it used to be…no Sucheetha, Mark, Jeff, and now Cheryl. This is the last straw.
I know I will NOT be watching anymore. They have gotten rid of all the good talent. I hope TPTB are resting well in that bed they made.

Good Day has gone downhill in the last 2 years.Gurvir is alright, but Buck and Karen need to go back to Sports. Ron Gant still needs a lot of work at reading the teleprompter and his delivery. JoAnne is a great weather person but Jeff Hill was the comic relief along with Mark Hayes and that is gone with the 4 they have now.Atlanta tv is going for “cheap” with the news anchor at all stations except for channel 2. Merry Christmas to All!!!!!!!!!!

Good Day Atlanta has been going down hill since Suchita Vadlamani and Mark Hayes left. Why mess with something when it is not broke. Channels 11 and 46 were never worth watching so my viewing time will go to WSB each morning before Good Morning America comes on. RIP Good Day Atlanta.

While I have always been a fan of Ron Gant I do agree with you. He doesn’t have the communication experience it takes to be a good anchor. I could see him doing sports segment, but I’m not impressed with his new position either.
FOX has given the ax to so many great morning anchors it not funny. I already switch back and forth between WSBTV and 11 Alive anyway.

This is so sad. I guarantee you in a month’s time, a young, skinny chick will take her place. Probably someone with no experience, just like they did with that Elle chick on 11, who clearly has no idea what she’s talking about. Fox 5 management thinks that we, the viewers, are a bunch of dummies. Well, I got news for you, you just got rid of the only legitimate traffic reporter in Atlanta. While 2 does a good job, there are too many people talking too fast. I guess that is what I’ll have to watch now, and not even understand. Bad move, Fox 5, bad move.

The biggest mistake Fox 5 made is when they let that Marc Bailey slip out to California. That show was terrific when Marc, Guivere Densa and Nancy Loveland did the show. I looked forward to starting the day with them. Bring back Marc Bailey!

IMO, 11’s morning news used to be good with Jill Becker as co-anchor. Ted Hall is good… Karyn and Elle are okay… Don’t really like Chesley McNeil all that much. I miss Jim Basile’s traffic reports The only likeable talent on 11’s evening newscasts is Brenda Wood… also like Chris Holcomb too. Don’t really care for the current news director either… and don’t care for the Gannett graphics and music either.
2 manages to remain the highest-rated local news station… even though Monica, John, and Chuck are no longer on the evening newscasts… and Pam Martin has since departed. Glenn Burns will most likely stick around for another 4 or 5 more years.
There are several likeable talents on 5. If Amanda Davis is allowed to return to 5… I could see her work-load possibly being scaled back… and her being moved to Noon newscasts… Russ and Lisa on 5, 6 & 10PM newscasts. Ken Cook is an excellent weather forecaster… and he’s nearing retirement age. Good Day used to be good with Amanda and Paul as co-host… and I feel that the 20-year-old morning show has become a shell of its former self. Disappointed that Cheryl is leaving.
46 used to be good as Georgia’s News at 10PM… CBS moved to 46, after 5 took FOX away from 36. The station can’t seem to hold on to decent male anchors long-term… and has managed to keep Stephany since 2003. Gene Norman was an excellent weather forecaster with an impressive resume, including working for NASA, and didn’t sugar-coat the weather… he moved to KHOU-TV, and I understand he’s no longer at the Houston CBS affiliate. Lori Wilson and Laura Huckabee were good too… miss Joy Barge’s traffic reports. 46 jettisoned its sports department in favor of partnership with 790 The Zone… and dumped Noon newscast.

Is anyone at the helm @ FOX5? I liked Cheryl’s professionalism and attitude. With Amanda out and Cheryl leaving, the only people I still enjoy reporting my news is Russ Spencer and Ken Cook at weather. But I’ve transferred over to Channel 2 WSBTV. I like their entire cast. They seem to keep real talent instead of tossing them. Bye FOX5

Gurvir sounds false and appears to be trying too hard to be likeable. Ron is stilted in his delivery and in the lighter moments between him and Gurvir, their intereactions seem forced.
Fox 5 wants to be the #1 TV station but I don’t see that happening anytime soon with the changes they have made.

I will miss Cheryl. The time she had dark hair and dark eye make up, was not a great time to watch; however, she has been appreciated every morning that she has been correct with the weather and traffic.
No one can take her place at saying “Don’t go there!”
Best wishes for a wonderful new career move.

Fox5, you have made some major changes and your viewers are not happy. For sometime now, I’ve watched WSB on the weekends. I guess I’ll start watching WSB in the mornings too. Good Day Atlanta is pitiful. And, I’m sorry Ron Gant is not the one you want to hear from early in the morning struggling to read a teleprompter. I truly believe I could do a better job.

Don’t go there!
Honestly I stopped watching this horrendous show since the Mark Hayes, Suchita, Jeff Hill combination was broken up-
My mornings are devoted to Better Mornings Atlanta with Brandon, Tracye, and Jennifer since they have the chemistry that Good Day used to have with Mark, Suchita and Jeff Hill-
Occasionally I may flip back and forth between Better Mornings Atlanta and WSBTV since they have the repeated news loop format for breaking stories-
Good Day Atlanta needs to disappear for a while until the right format can be acheived

Non-renewal of highly or higher paid talent. End of story. Does the big boss want to miss their bonus and keep someone who could easily be replaced for less than half of what they’re paying them? No way. Most of these moves are entirely about money, specifically dumping salaries and other costs so big bonuses can be made.

Saw Stacey Elgin on Channel 11 last week, so she’s no longer in retirement “taking care of her two twins,” at least not exclusely.
I remember when CW started at CH 5. She was a lot more slim and did the weather. Not sure whether keeping her figure slim would have protected her, but if I made my living on TV, absent some insurmountable physical condition, (thyroid), I’d keep the weight off…
Best of luck, Cheryl. You’re the unfortunate victim of some worthless rich person who only knows how to destroy and abuse their authority. You’ll find another place to flourish, because you’re professional in every aspect of your duties. Sorry it had to happen at Christmas, but whoever did the dirty deed will have it happen to him in time.
You reap what you sow, little rich man, so enjoy yourself before someone saws off the limb you’re perched on…

I’ll miss Cheryl! Unfortunately, Good Day has gone through a lot of personnel changes throughout the 10 years I’ve watched it. (I still miss Mark Hayes) I’m happy Gurvir is back and really enjoy Karen, especially in her expanded format, but it feels as though by the time I feel an anchor is “family” they leave. I’m afraid I have to agree about Ron Gant. He should have gotten more training before being put in front of a camera. I’m sure he’s a great guy and seems to have a lot of potential (you can see it when he forgets about the camera and the teleprompter), but he has to work on his delivery … And Billy, your comments about Cheryl’s weight are just plain thoughtless and rude.

I am so sad to hear Cheryl Curry leaving, she is so professional. Sad to say however Ron Gant just cant seem to get it right as far as the reading of the teleprompters, I so tried to give him the benefit of doubt and bestow some patience but it just ain’t getting better with him. Gurvir is so stiff that she seems tensed. I like Amanda Davis reporting of the news however how much negative press can you receive from alcohol related instances (get it right Amanda) Amanda is so very talented – please don’t allow alcohol to ruin your calling. I saw Cheryl Curry in the craft store and I nudged my sister and said that is the traffic lady from Fox-5 and Cheryl said yep this is me and smiled. How many people do you find that are that normal. Most people act as if they don’t even have an audience and ignore you. Joann is perfect and I enjoy how she delivers the weather .

I’ve tried to hang in there through all the changes – I’ve been a loyal fan of FOX 5 for forever. I watch Mark now when I get to Texas – he’s still fun and charming and a great morning person. I MISS him and Suchita and Jeff and Cheryl. They had history and chemistry – cooking, sports, family, we remembered the various competitions year to year. We cared when Mark was injured and Jeff had surgery. We knew about their families, strengths, and how goofy they could be. I wouldn’t leave for work till I heard Cheryl tell me what to look for (and avoid). That is all gone now. I’ve started watching the other channels to see who can replace them, but the truth is – they were an awesome team, and no one else comes close. So I’m looking for an almost as good. Fox 5 is not in the running. (And I wasn’t going to even justify the cruel weight remarks, but really people, I am not interested in another anorexic size 2 “presenter” with 1/10 the talent of Cheryl.)

To all of you morons who are trashing Cheryl because of her weight … take a good, long, hard and honest look in a mirror. When you are perfect in every way, then and ONLY then can you criticize someone else. Cheryl White is a very beautiful woman, and we’ve all been very fortunate to have had her on television in the area for these years. And to those here trashing her about not being some kind of a role model (WTF?) … I say she IS a role model. She tells women (and men) that you do NOT have to be an anorexic bag of skin and bones to be successful on television. So there.
