Over the past two years, the “Good Day Atlanta” on-air staff has gone through a few changes. The latest departure: Cheryl White, a long-time traffic and weather anchor.
White has been with Fox 5 for 15 years.
She posted a message on her public Facebook page earlier today, where more than 200 people have made comments:
It’s been a privilege working on Good Day Atlanta for so many years. December 28th will be my last day. I wish continued success to the entire Good Day team.
Fox 5 is seeking a replacement but the new job requires more multimedia duties.
Others who have left “Good Day Atlanta” over the past two years include anchor Suchita Vadlamani (still in Atlanta but not in media), anchor Mark Hayes (now anchoring in Dallas) and “Road Warrior” Stacy Elgin (raising her twins). Arrivals include anchors Ron Gant and Gurvir Dhindsa.
Here’s White’s current bio on the Fox 5 website:
Cheryl White is a traffic and weather anchor for Good Day Atlanta.
Cheryl has been guiding Atlanta drivers through rush-hour gridlock since 1997. And if Cheryl sounds familiar, you’re right! Before going in front of the camera, she worked behind the microphone at several radio stations in Atlanta.
When she’s not tracking your commute, Cheryl is often tracking your weather. In 2006, Cheryl earned her Certificate of Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University, and has since become an integral part of the FOX 5 Storm Team. She is currently a member of the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society.
Cheryl wakes up while most of Atlanta is still sleeping to get ready for reports starting at 5 a.m. How does she make it all look so easy? Cheryl draws upon her vast background in news, traffic, and weather; which includes over a decade of experience in Atlanta and five years as a television news and weather anchor in Indiana.
A graduate of ISUE, Indiana State University-Evansville, Cheryl enjoys flower gardening and needle arts in her free time. And if there’s a fire, Cheryl is a good person to have around since is also a graduate of the Roswell-Alpharetta Public Safety Fire.
Ratings are about the same for “Good Day Atlanta” in December 2012 vs. December 2011.
Cheryl now resides in Lilburn with her husband.
Other “Good Day Atlanta” items of (relatively) recent vintage:
12/27/10: Suchita Vadlamani leaves “Good Day Atlanta”
3/8/11: Gurvir Dhindsa returns to WAGA-TV
9/8/11: Stacey Elgin is out at Fox 5
10/10/11: Joanne Feldman takes over for Jeff Hill on ‘Good Day Atlanta.’
4/5/12: Mark Hayes departs “Good Day Atlanta.”
4/16/12: Mark Hayes joins NBC affiliate in Dallas.
9/24/12: Ron Gant becomes an anchor at “Good Day Atlanta.”

I am a father of three young boys. I teach my children to be fit by diet and exercise. Cheryl is not a good role model for my children. She needs to work on her health habits.

She may not be able to control her weight problem, but she has no business being on TV.

For all you trashing FOX, lets see what other stations are standing in line to hire her. It would be an upgrade for WSB to have her as their night anchor.

Sad to see Cheryl go. She will likely be replaced by a skinny, blond bimbo. I would much rather watch someone like Cheryl who is competent versus a talking head with a room temperature I.Q. Best of luck to Cheryl- she’s a true professional! Fox 5 sucks wind now.

People are just plain mean. You’ve got to wonder if these folks making the comments were also bullies in school. My guess is yes. Good luck to her – and I hope Amanda Davis gets it together – she is missed.

I’ve tried to hang in there through all the changes – I’ve been a loyal fan of FOX 5 for forever. I watch Mark now when I get to Texas – he’s still fun and charming and a great morning person. I MISS him and Suchita and Jeff and Cheryl. They had history and chemistry – cooking, sports, family, we remembered the various competitions year to year. We cared when Mark was injured and Jeff had surgery. We knew about their families, strengths, and how goofy they could be. I wouldn’t leave for work till I heard Cheryl tell me what to look for (and avoid). That is all gone now. I’ve started watching the other channels to see who can replace them, but the truth is – they were an awesome team, and no one else comes close. So I’m looking for an almost as good. Fox 5 is not in the running. (And I wasn’t going to even justify the cruel weight remarks, but really people, I am not interested in another anorexic size 2 “presenter” with 1/10 the talent of Cheryl.)

agree with Tom, Cheryl is Luscious. Would tune in just for her in hopes that she would come out from behind that desk that they were using to try and hide her. Shameful. She is seriously hot and beautiful and do have to say that for a moment before the traffic screen came on one could catch her backside in the reflection of the screen and would start my morning off with a big smile. Sorry to see her go wish her all the best.

I will miss Cheryl! The best team was Mark, Suchita, Brett, Cheryl, and Jeff. They gave GMA a run for their money in the morning. It’s hard to find good chemistry like that. Good luck finding it again.
Not again!

Shaking my head….so Fox is letting another good person get away? Seriously? I stopped watching after Mark left and just happened to tune in one morning. Ron….bless your heart….tried to stick with you but kept wondering who chose to hire you. I’m sure you’re a great guy with mad talent in sports but the morning show doesn’t seem to be a fit for you. I applaud your courage in trying to succeed in the role, though. Like the others said, it’s just not the same without Mark, Suchita, Cheryl, and Jeff. They cracked me up every morning! I hate to see Cheryl go but wish her nothing but the best. For those discussing her weight, I’m in awe. It must be cool to be so perfect.

@Tavy some people can eat right and exercise and still be heavy. Oprah for one. You’re an idiot.
Cheryl is beautiful. Size does not matter unless she is morbidly obese then you could say she is not a good role model.

Man, Cheryl gone!!!! I agree with everything everybody said about Ron Gant. Love him as a baseball player and maybe, maybe he could do sports but it is hard watching him struggle through his script each morning. I switched to channel 2 after Mark left. He just does not have it. I’m embarassed for him. lol I wonder how long they are going to let him continue like that. And Ghurvir, OMG, can someone give her something to eat. They have lost and will lose a lot of viewers. It doesn’t help that it is a Fox channel.
Wut ... Wut.... are you a Nut .... Nut...(smile)

Cheryl needs to get her weight under control. she has the face for radio. amanda for one needs to get her drinking under control, i recommend some time at Betty Ford. shes a terrible example to all of our children and i think it is best for everyone that she is gone. and hopefully gets her license revoked. safer for all that way

I haven’t watched local news in 20 years. Bring back John Pruitt, dig up Guy Sharp and find Terri Merryman! She was a looker, along with that Dagmar weather girl I’d see on the billboards.

While I’m at it would somebody please find Bobbie Batista! She had the clearest blue eyes that when shown at a certain angle, actually made her look cross-eyed. Don’t care. She was gorgeous.

Have not watched fox 5 since Suchitha, Mark and all the great morning gang left. Will not watch again. Terrible bunch on there right now. Cheryl was the only one I even would watch on that channel at all. Channel 11 is my channel of choice.

To all of you morons who are trashing Cheryl because of her weight … take a good, long, hard and honest look in a mirror. When you are perfect in every way, then and ONLY then can you criticize someone else. Cheryl White is a very beautiful woman, and we’ve all been very fortunate to have had her on television in the area for these years. And to those here trashing her about not being some kind of a role model (WTF?) … I say she IS a role model. She tells women (and men) that you do NOT have to be an anorexic bag of skin and bones to be successful on television. So there.

@ Producer … remember Gail Janus? From the “11 Alive Newsroom” days of the late 70s? Now THERE was a looker! And you’re right about Dagmar Midcap, too. But to me, Cheryl White is simply the most beautiful woman in Atlanta television, and it is a crying shame that she’s leaving.

Sorry to see Cheryl leaving, as she is one of Fox 5 Jewels. She will truly be missed. I think Fox 5 should offer her more money to stick around. For Ron Gant, I have to say I am willing to give you all the time you need to get comfortable and you are doing a very good job. There are many people who wish they could be in your shoes. Good Job Gant keep up the Good Work and make your hater your motivator. (:)

@Colonel Jack – thanks. The weight criticism were petty and cruel. Nothing like the anonymity of a blog to bring out the nastiness of small minded people (who probably wish they were the healthy specimens they were championing.) Cheryl is a jewel. I’ll miss her, and I’m sad to say, won’t be watching FOX5 anymore.
