TV bits: T-Boz’s TLC reality show debuts Jan. 1; OWN clears two Tyler Perry shows; ‘Walking Dead’ replayed in black and white

Here are some Georgia-connected TV news stories to take your mind off of crazy homicidal killers:

- Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, of TLC, is getting a modest test run of a reality show called “Totally T-Boz” that debuts January 1 at 8 p.m. TLC only commissioned four episodes. It will air before the debut of “The Sisterhood,” another Atlanta-based reality show featuring preacher wives. I will talk to her before the debut to get more details. (Her TLC mate Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas will star in “Rachael v. Guy: Celebrity Food Cookoff” on January 6 on the Food Network. And both are working on casting a VH1 biopic about TLC.)

OWN two months ago signed an exclusive agreement to air all of Tyler Perry’s future TV shows. He has already started shooting two at his studios here in Atlanta:

A drama “The Haves and the Have Nots” is about the dynamics of the affluent Cryer family and the impoverished family of their housekeeper Hanna, and the obstacles and secrets that exist within both families. A sitcom “Love Thy Neighbor” is set at Love’s Diner, where every day the menu serves up good food, great laughs, valuable life lessons, and a whole lot of love for its zany neighbors.

The final episode of TBS’s Tyler Perry show “For Better or Worse” aired last Friday, Dec. 7, ending a two-season run and 45 episodes.

AMC’ will air marathon episodes of seasons one and two of “The Walking Dead” in black and white in February. That could be cool in an old-school sense. The show is shot mostly in Senoia and has averaged more than 10 million viewers per episode this season with better than 18-49 ratings than almost all broadcast network shows. It returns in February for eight more episodes this season.

Speaking of “The Walking Dead,” the Parents Television Council is going after the show for its PG-14 rating considering the level of violence and gore. The executive director has written a letter to former Senator Gordon Smith, Chairman of the TV Parental Guidelines Monitoring Board.

“Throughout its run, the AMC program The Walking Dead has featured some of the most graphic and brutally intense violence and gore imaginable. In the current season alone the show has depicted hundreds of scenes of grisly murder both of living and “undead,” but human, characters. The intensely violent content has included depictions of the cleaving of human skulls with a machete, extreme gun violence including graphic depictions of blood and brains splattering after gunshot wounds, and the use of a sharpened human bone as a weapon to stab another character,” wrote Winter.

“Clearly, this is content appropriate to an adult-only audience, but AMC has rated every single episode of The Walking Dead as suitable for a 14 year old child.

“PTC members from around the country have sent thousands of letters to AMC asking them to reconsider the inaccurate age-based rating it has assigned to the program, but with no response.   Therefore, on behalf of our better than 1.3 million members, we call on you and the TV Parental Guidelines Monitoring Board to immediately take any necessary steps to insure that this program is rated accurately, appropriately and for the audience for which the show is designed.  For the TV Ratings system to work as it is designed, the board and you as its chairman can do no less,” concluded Winter.

Atlanta resident Julius Erving, known as “Dr. J.,” will make an appearance on an upcoming episode of “The Office” as an investor in Jim’s sports marketing business.

T-Boz is the worse female singer ever recorded. She has it in her head that because TLC sold millions of records that she is some kind of icon. The reason TLC cannot make any money today is cause they lacked vocal skills. Their fans “ears” have matured. We spend our hard earn money to see Maxwell or Jill Scott, not TLC. TLC sold more records than Envogue but Vouge will get my money any day over T-boz & Chilli.

T-Boz? Honey Boo Boo? TLC is supposed to stand for “The Learning Channel.” They should rename it “The Dumbing Down Channel.”

WOW…sad. I grew up to this woman. She IS an icon. I remember when Atlanta gave new life to R&B and TLC was at the forefront of that. Homegrown and Atlanta all the way.

But that was a generation ago. T-Boz is now much older, much heavier, less pretty and possibly less healthier. Not an easy set of circumstances to confront. Well into her 40s, what on Earth is her sound gonna be like? So many difficult questions.

She seems a little bit uneasy on camera but I could still see her as a TV personality but I’m not so sure about a comeback on the music scene.

She needs to get those bills paid so hopefully something lasting and sufficient will come her way. How about Frank Ski’s old job? She contributed a lot to this city’s musical soul and popular music as well.

@ATL North….T-boz is not an icon. Icons can sing & continue to tour. Ciara, Ashanti & Mya can sing better than this woman. There are many icons that are much older than T-boz, much more heavier and were never very pretty during their hay day but they have the pipes to draw crowds till their death. The last time T-boz tried to perform live at the Lady of Soul awards, she sound a hot mess.

It’s hypocritical to say “I don’t want no scrubs” and she is one herself. She is an embarassment to her kids and Atlanta.

Wow. Seriously?! Some of these comments here about T-Boz are pathetic, callous and heartless. Whether you losers like to admit it, she IS a grammy-award winning recording artist. Her career may be on decline, but she is a survivor. She has fought a life-time battle with Sickle Cell Anemia; she is a brain cancer survivor and has survived bankruptcy and divorce. Give a sistah a break!

45 episodes in 2 seasons?? Good lord. I bet that’s more than Brady Bunch and Gilligand’s Island put together.
